Hi, Amy! I know you guys go longer in Canada!
No, if I get my way I will continue the 2/3 loop, it is my favorite.

Hello! Glad you are here, Cassie!
Please follow so that you can see the questions as they are tweeted.
Yes, this time I am looping. It was the hope and plan all year. But now I have official word.
Hi Kathy. Feel like I haven't talked to you in a while. How's your year been?
Hi I'm Holly, K-5 STEM Coordinator, in Tampa, FL! Excited to learn with you!
I'm doing a happy dance for you.
Hi everyone, Traci from Ks here, happy sunday!
Hi, Terry! How was your weekend?
Hi, Shannon! Glad you are here!
Hi Lori! Challenging yr & we only have 32 days left and I just can't believe it...
Quite busy, but good! And you?
...A1: At this point in the year, it's always fun to "look" back and realize how independent they have become as learners.
A1 All have grown as readers and see themselves as readers! Reading is no longer this big mystery.
This year has gone by so fast. I think I blinked and here we are.
I so enjoy their independence!
A1: we celebrate small successes along the way, but I always love the growth around March
A1: my ss love learning and sharing what they know, we love to read and are reading to learn, very tech savey as well
My 2nd graders have changed a lot as well. They are now in book clubs, thinking and most quite fluent. A lot of growth.
A1 my readers have really grown so much this year! I'm so happy with their growth. They are so much better using their strategies
A1 Happy to start to see my first graders able to pick up more books to read. They are starting to have favorites!
love their independence and self-motivation
I'm good! Having Sunday Blues... But otherwise, I'm fantastic ;) How are you?
Hey Lori! I will be lurking tonight, hard to participate when I don't teach 1st yet!
Hi Lori! Can't believe this year is ending!
A1: The growth they have made in reading as well as their growth in explaining their thinking
A1: I love seeing them move from learning to read to reading to learn.
A1 Hard to pick just one! That's one of the great things about 1st grade, all the progress in so many areas you see!
A1: I love watching them grow all year but to see where they came in reading and to see where they are now... BIG CELEBRATIONS!
A1 Most shifted from learning to read to reading to learn! Great to see independent researchers & story tellers!
The next hour my tweets will be focused toward reading and assessment. Feel free to join in! :)
A1: Sts have grown leaps & bounds w/ rdg, they are now recommending books & seeking out series/titles
Finishing up a bike ride then will be checking in. Michelle from WI
Yes, this is something I did for 10 yrs, looping 2nd to 3rd and love it. I am very happy to return to it. https://t.co/dmFgFhfNzH
I did that last year!! Do you get to loop with your same group?
A1 - A lot more independence. In Ontario Kinder, we have a T *and* an ECE + EAs and other paraprofs.
Things are good. I really enjoyed teaching 1st grade this year.
A1 Our first graders are starting to share their thinking about reading more on blogs, in Educreations & on Voicethread
Elephant and Piggie and Fly Guy wins in my room :)
Sorry I’m late, I’m Jenni from Ontario. What’s the first Q?
A1: My high achieving kids still growing a years growth!
I love seeing their independence! They are mini-humans now, very capable
I love when I "bless books" by doing quick book talk, leave them out, and they race to get their hands on one.
Claire here from sunny and mild Vermont. Howdy my friends.
Same for my room. Also the Junie B books.
Great idea! https://t.co/5YounzgC1s
I love when I "bless books" by doing quick book talk, leave them out, and they race to get their hands on one.
I have to agree! It's fun to be able to hear the greater depth in book conversations as we approach end of year.
I love how much they get into read alouds and have discussions.
I'm reading a book about reading to learn right now .. A close look at Close Reading
A1 I like seeing how independent they become, but also how well they learn to collaborate with others!
Hi Leka! I love Sunday nights.
Biggest change I see is their willingness to write their thoughts, try to spell and not hung up on how to spell
A1: Humbling to see the growth/confidence in my Ss...maybe not to benchmark but oh, how they have grown.
https://t.co/BnSN24FwdS
Q1: When you think about where your first graders started, and where they are now, what changes do you celebrate?
A1: As I have kinders and first, it's amazing to me to see the differences in their development at this time of the year!
I also love when they read a book and recommend it to a friend.
Q2: When kid watching, what do you pay attention to as you work with young readers?
I am a teacher because I felt loved & I want my students to know that they are loved.😀
Hello, Meredith! Welcome to
A2: I pay a lot attention to the strategies they use. I listen to their thoughts. I watch what they choose, and their stamina.
A2: I look for self-corrections and using different strategies for unknown words!
A2: If they're using strategies they learned and if they are able to self-correct
We love . Students can take picture, record voices, have conversations around ideas, and much more.
A2: Decoding and comprehension skill strategies... How do they function as an independent reader?
Thanks! Is it kind of like ?
A2: I look to see what strategies they are using and to see if I can find any patterns in miscues
A2 I'm watching for strategic activity, self-monitoring and self-correcting errors. Also, looking for increased stamina.
Q2 I look for strategies students use, but also listen to their think alouds as they read.
A2: Strategy use for decoding, self-monitoring when meaning starts to break down, what kind of errors are they making
A2: I pay attention to the word attack strategies Ss are using. I also to the types of books each S seems to enjoy most.
A2: As I watch ss, I look to see that they are using metacognition and also strategies to "fix" their reading miscues.
A2: an attempt to write their thoughts. They all have ideas & I want them to be willing to write them down, correct spelling or not
A2: fluency, how they decode words - what strategies they try and use, if they try and self correct, if they’re making meaning
A2: I like to watch to see what excites those that don't like reading and capitalize on their excitement!
Ormond Beach. Just north of Daytona
A2: I look for decoding, use of strategies and the ability to understand what they're reading
increased stamina so important
A2 The strategies they use to navigate text, especially when struggling & how enthusiastic/motivated they r when reading.
A2 I also like to notice choices they make as readers. What books do they choose? Where do they read? How do they share thinking?
stamina is SO important! And sometimes overlooked ;) Ss can be good "fake" readers
A2: I teach 4th this year but will teach 1st next year. It is important to look to see if Ss are using strategies they are taught.
A2 What are they doing in the moment that I can compliment, in hopes that they will repeat it later with or without me.
Great!! I learned a lot and now I have mind overload.Need time to process it all.The break will be good for that
Agree! Reluctant readers get discouraged easily at this time of the year. I try to find high interest books https://t.co/NHAx7cUw11
A2: I like to watch to see what excites those that don't like reading and capitalize on their excitement!
Do you have any examples you could share of what they’re talking about?
A2. What strategies they are using and gaps in knowledge I need to address (phonics etc)
I have always dreaded writing, but I am loving my kiddos' writing this year! :) So important to get past the spelling
And it is one of the hardest to build. https://t.co/xsmLF4hEs0
stamina is SO important! And sometimes overlooked ;) Ss can be good "fake" readers
Teaching writing is one of my favorite things to teach! The kids grow so much.
A2 Looking to see if they select reading during "fringe times" like recess or free choice time.
I love their independence with Read to Self now, though. They want to read and enjoy it!
we've started book clubs and I love to sit back and watch them share about the book, giggles and questions https://t.co/H9gBQ0RizQ
I love their independence with Read to Self now, though. They want to read and enjoy it!
I teach the Daily 5 too. Where do you teach?
I'm loving it more this year than in years past! Sometimes we don't have enough time
A2 I smile when I see my ss enthusiasm and excitement when they book shop!
Sorry I'm joining late tonight! Here from MN
True, it is more difficult when they are not selecting the reading. https://t.co/2O7tcyznVs
I love their independence with Read to Self now, though. They want to read and enjoy it!
Book clubs can be so fun if they’re ready for it. They talk about books for real. :)
Which books have your students been reading and talking about?
Q3: What assessment information do you find the most powerful in future planning?
I'm taking a writing class in grad school and learning so much! Actually, this chat is an assignment.
Love that sts are wanting to read all the Franklin books, Arthur books, etc
We time it, and graph it. We set goals as a class. I also introduce my beanie baby: Stick with it Stork. https://t.co/RRifCzsJWc
How do you all build stamina at the beginning of the year?
I also love teaching writing to first graders. The growth is incredible.
OOh! I like the Stork! Got others?
A2: I try & see if they are decoding or are more familiar with the words...I ultimately hope to see joy.
https://t.co/Ec1AHewueB
Q2: When kid watching, what do you pay attention to as you work with young readers?
so many levels, magic tree house, toys that talk, owl books, habiat books, etc.
A3 Running records, both formal and informal then analyzing them and using them to inform teaching. https://t.co/yvJEDYLv1t
Q3: What assessment information do you find the most powerful in future planning?
Thank you!! Looking for ideas for next year!
My Ss really like to graph their stamina time. They really want to see the growth.
Reading and writing go hand in hand. It is important to work on both
A3: a find formal and informal running record the most beneficial to inform teaching
A3 running records and listening individual read.
I finally introduced some of my kiddos to 's Epic challenge .. they were so motivated!
A3: Running records give me the best info, even if it’s informal. Allows me to see how they’re reading & what they’re struggling w/
I use the Daily 5! We start with just 2 minutes on Day 1 ;) Sometimes we don't make it lol
We don't use running records anymore. We use Mclass as our formal assessments.
What is a running record?
Search Beanie Baby strategies you will find many. I did add Stick with it Stork and Fluency Flamingo. https://t.co/KhRYbaebUT
OOh! I like the Stork! Got others?
A3:Running records, give valuable, fast results, also writing conferences
We're in MN - kids love Daily 5 and I do too! Allows me to meet the needs of all my Ss!
A3: Running records, kid watching, recording kiddos rdg so I can go back and listen again
A3 Also, just noticing reading behaviors and taking notes on what I see. A bit of research.
A3 I use anecdotal notes and discussion notes as they talk about their learning.
...A3: Taking daily running records on each student (within the groups I meet w/) to record positive steps & errors to learn from.
I have all the others for comp. & word work. I'll look for the new ones! Thanks!
Our DRA2 provides the most in-depth info... But running records and reading conferences provide great info too!
Agreed! Our F&P reading assessments give us information about accuracy, fluency, strategies used & comprehension.
A3: DRAs and teacher observation during small group or individual S conferences!
Thank you!! My big kids have pretty good stamina, but I know the little Ss will have a more difficult time with it.
A3. My anecdotal notes during guided reading. And my quick word wall/phonemic awareness assessments
we introduce Daily 5 rdg & math at the same time. Builds stamina twice as fast!
A3: Conferencing and taking notes during reading is the best. I also use the app for running records.
We use Raz Kids so I listen to my Ss read quite a bit. They love to record their reading. More relaxed.
So true! Where would be without anecdotal records from book conversations, small group work, conferring, etc.??
You use an ipad to assess students. One assessment is the TRC which covers fluency, oral comp, and written comp.
A3 It's all about the comprehension for me. Can Ss tell you what they read about?
Quick check in after GR lesson to reinforce strategies used independently. Great way to build confidence. https://t.co/whugkj0Dix
...A3: Taking daily running records on each student (within the groups I meet w/) to record positive steps & errors to learn from.
A3: DRAs and reading words with long and short vowels (local assessment)
A3: we rely a lot of Reading A to Z running records to group students based on needs
It can be time consuming, but it gives us the BEST information about a reader.
What do you like about ? I use Running Record Calculator for running records.
Some of my struggling readers practice phonics or tricky words or short passages during stamina time.
How do you give/what do you do for word wall/phonemic awareness assessments?
A3 Running records, word recs, some aims web data, but also informal observations during guided reading & whole class.
Q4: How do you provide opportunities for students to reflect on their learning and set their own goals?
Ooh! I just finished grad school last Sunday! Good luck! :)
A3 Read alouds with accountable talk. Asking Qs: "Tell me more & What makes you say that?"
Do you have a paid account?
....and LOVE LOVE LOVE for anecdotal records, recording reading/conversation, & taking pics of artifacts.
It is easier than gathering materials. I have found it reliable and accurate. https://t.co/suipte6uul
What do you like about ? I use Running Record Calculator for running records.
A3: Ss also record their read alouds on Seesaw, then at snack ss get to hear each other read, ss LOVE it!..Holds them accountable.
A4: Ss reflect through and I'm always guiding them with their goals. Would like to incorporate more student goal setting
A4 I had students set a goal at the beginning of the year to work on. Admittedly, I need to get better with tracking goals!
. pens can also be very valuable for recording running records and listening back to reading.
I have to use Evernote more. Got away from it this year. https://t.co/oGuP3yVtQD
....and LOVE LOVE LOVE for anecdotal records, recording reading/conversation, & taking pics of artifacts.
A3: running records, conferencing notes, teacher made phonics screeners, questioning during small groups, and sight words.
A4: In the past I have used data notebooks so students could track their progress.
This is an area that I need to improve on.
A4: Using to record rdg & reflect about goals met & set new one
During the months I wanted to do all of them. otherwise the free ones are enough. https://t.co/88P1jm4t9s
Do you have a paid account?
A4: I use digital data notebooks for my Ss to reflect and see their growth.
I never thought about doing that digitally. That's probably so much easier!
I never thought of using Seesaw to track goals and reading! Great ideas!
I want to be better about this next year. Powerful
is the best! So neat to go back and listen, share, reflect, etc.
We set quarterly goals and all Ss have their own data folder to track their progress
I need to look into SeeSaw. I think I missed the post explaining what it is.
A4 This is something I have to work on.
Interesting. What information to do your students keep in their digital notebooks? Where do the notebooks live?
A4 We talk about/review our strategies before we read in small groups, need to focus on their goals more often.
Cathy we also use F&P assess. and like all the information we get.
A4: Once ss GRL is established,I follow a one year's growth chart.Using a bookmark, ss get to color in a level as they move on.
A4 This is an area I am curious about. I would like to use next year for this! I keep hearing great things.
A4: They use Seesaw and they have a folder where they graph their fluency, sight word recog., math facts, some have a behavior form
wow! Love this organization!
A4 In my small groups for reading intervention, students set their own goal. We then monitor their attempts & next steps together.
I put fluency scores and STAR scores in notebook, looking to add more next year. The notebooks are in their Google drive.
A4: I need improvement in this area!
That's so great. I need to use Google Drive to keep my students' work in.
It's FANTASTIC! Allows Ss to capture lrng through recordings, drawings, photos, etc. Can be shared with Ps, Ss & Ts!
Google Drive is a great way for students to collect artifacts over time. Need to use it more often for student work.
Thank you! I will definitely need to check it out!
Q5: How will you use assessment information in helping students shape summer reading goals?
I work with guided reading groups in the same ways. https://t.co/XsDeaOePp6
A4 In my small groups for reading intervention, students set their own goal. We then monitor their attempts & next steps together.
can be used like everyone is talking here. It would be good to keep monthly reading?
A4 I love using journals to have Ss reflect on their learning. I have also used blogs as a way for Ss to reflect and share.
I always think this is the perfect time to give self-assessment a try. Students are used to you & class systems.
So much easier, I made one in Sheets and made each Ss a copy. Each page has a chart with a graph, All Ss do is enter info.
Yes. You can set up a reading folder where all the reading can be stored.
I was just thinking this as I was reading. I would love to use with that purpose as well. https://t.co/6robdhjGI1
can be used like everyone is talking here. It would be good to keep monthly reading?
Q5: I've taught year round for 6 years. Next year we are switching to traditional. I'm worried my kids will lose a lot.
A5: I have never given individual summer reading goals. I can't wait to hear some responses though!!
Record reading of a book each month or so. Can use to show growth throughout the year with fluency!
I use Drive for most of the stuff in my classroom. Great way to keep things organized.
A3. When we confer we do this a bit. Something I need to work on so they are setting the goals not me !
HI all! Sorry so late- just home from our cabin :-)
I think I will create a reading portfolio folder and keep monthly read aloud.
Yes indeed! Check it out sooner than later .. there won't be any regrets! :)
Do your 1st graders use google drive too or is it just a resource for you?
A5 We'll be sending home Summer reading bags with many of our young readers. Don't want them to lose their momentum.
I think parents will love that as well. Great archive. https://t.co/7UU57RbSb6
I think I will create a reading portfolio folder and keep monthly read aloud.
I miss that. When I lived in Michigan I loved to go to the cabin. So peaceful.
Yep! Only $10 and they can keep all their posts forever:)
I actually teach 4th this year, teaching 1st next year. Planning to teach the 1st graders us it as well.
what do you put in the reading bags?
A5. Hadn't thought of this. Now I will!
my district uses e-portfolios .. houses student work from K-12th grade .. great reflection over time
A5: Never set personal goals for summer B4. Must do this! Have each S set a summer goal, what will work on & how will work on it.
Peaceful for sure! Just what the dr ordered after a long week! Where in MI did you live Lori? Upper or lower??
Yes, one of the perks I love from https://t.co/HjRB7AwJta
Yep! Only $10 and they can keep all their posts forever:)
A5: I will send home a summer reading binder and a form where they can write the books they read down over the summer.
A5. Maybe sneek a couple trips to the municipal library before school ends!
Do your first graders have email? How did your fourth graders do with it?
I'm VERY interested in learning about using Google Drive with 1st graders!
A5: I have always looked at the next grade level standards to set goals.
That’s a great idea! Do you use real books that they get to keep?
A5 One of our Interventionist takes pics of kids caught reading. Would love to extend this over the summer. Kids enjoying books.
I think using Drive for data notebooks would be great building wide. I am going to suggest this next year!
I’ve been exploring it this year with my Ones. It’s been GREAT!!
Will do! Thanks for sharing :)
my 1sties use them! LONG address, but they do it! We use drive some this year, hoping more next yr
Time flies when I'm chatting with . Q6 on the way....
Yes, real books and a special bag. Books are returned at start of new year.
we had kids take pics of them reading over Christmas break. Never thought about doing it over summer too!!
This year I'm teaching primary reading intervention: 1st & 2nd gr groups. Spend much time in 1st grade classrooms.
Sounds like I must check out
I ❤️ this idea! Get 'caught' reading.
A5 I want to motivate Ss to continue to read for fun over the summer enthusiastically!
All district Ss have email. My 4th graders were able to do it independently after I showed them the first time.
Q6: Considering what you’ve learned about your readers across the year, what will you do differently next year?
A5 I will use assessment info to recommend books for summer reading to students & parents. Also reflect on reading & make plans.
A6: Use more technology. There are so many apps and programs to help children read and write
Same here! Introduce some authors and series that ss can find at public library! https://t.co/WnKCBV4Jxx
A5 I want to motivate Ss to continue to read for fun over the summer enthusiastically!
Yes, I agree! I need to use my ipads more.
A6: Summer goal: comprehension intervention - revamping for next year .. can't wait!
Independently, but also with their family. Harder texts can be navigated together or used as read alouds.
A6: Trying to go paperless!!!
Are you 1:1 with 4th grade? Do they have assignments online as homework- is a problem I've run into
A6: Next year I want to do more partner book chats and whole class book discussions to really improve deeper thinking!
A6: More read alouds just for fun! To keep showing them how fun reading is!
A6: for kids past 1st grade levels, challenge them with harder text and provide support so they can grow! https://t.co/MAawuZx4Wx
Q6: Considering what you’ve learned about your readers across the year, what will you do differently next year?
A6: Next year, helping them keep track of data and growth.
at our school, older students partner read with the younger ones once a month or so. it's pretty cool for both
A6. It's a much lower group next year so maybe not using daily 5. Try out literacy workstations instead maybe!
I am not 1:1 this year, I will be next year with 1st. No online HW as some students don't have tech access.
A6: I will also use RazKids from beginning of the year.
My Ss are really good at partner reading. I really like to hear their conversations.
A6 Support/train parents on ways to help their little readers earlier. Continue to establish reading community on day 1.
I do partner reading this year but the discussion part is lacking. I need to do a better job next year!
A6: I will do more engaging fluency activities with my Ss. Along with more reading for entertainment!
Hopefully transitioning to 1:1
A6: I will teach my Ss to keep a journal of their data and learning.
The final question is on the way...
Thanks, this is just what I have been looking for!
Thinking of ways to track growth other than text level or correct words per minute... any thoughts? https://t.co/LsNWZ2Ts3s
A6: Next year, helping them keep track of data and growth.
A6 I want to do more to make informational text and poetry a part of our year from the start.
Q7: Last question...What resources do you recommend for growing in our understanding of assessment?
A6 Yes Yes Yes I will also use more technology next year as well.
A6 PBL has been very successful this yr & trying to make as many cross curricular/real world connections as possible.
A6 I decide particulars after I meet my little friends. Each group has different needs and require a different approach.
There are partner reading task cards on TPT that I used to start out.
We have to do monthly comprehension tests. We also use SuccessMaker. I used those. Maybe using rubrics? https://t.co/Zdrso57rwB
Thinking of ways to track growth other than text level or correct words per minute... any thoughts? https://t.co/LsNWZ2Ts3s
A6: Next year, helping them keep track of data and growth.
What about fluency? Record reading and compare - they should be able to hear the difference as they mature as readers
I asked students four questions across the year & recorded responses in Evernote. Interesting to hear responses grow.
Reading Inventory, see how their thoughts on reading change. https://t.co/KYMnExebvC
I asked students four questions across the year & recorded responses in Evernote. Interesting to hear responses grow.
How about by genres read? Trying to think outside the box for
I use a weekly poem in my classroom to work on rhyming, phonics, sight words, etc. My Ss love the poems!
A7: I enjoy The Literacy Teacher's Playbook and Teaching Reading in Small Groups by Jennifer Serravallo for assessment resources!
definitely. I am planning on that. Maybe use a rubric to set a goal?
Wow, these are great resources. Thanks everybody!
Q7 Our PLN is a great resource. So much help and support to be found here.
What about recording reading on throughout the year to show growth? I ❤️using for fluency growth
I haven't seen the book by Mort. Looks interesting!
Thanks for the great resources, everyone!
Missed the entire but must say hello to . Someone introduced me to Munzee which is kinda like urban geocaching.
A7: I'm reading a Closer look at Close Reading to learn more about supporting my Ss with their reading
Yes! I will use to do the same, but I'm trying to have them set a goal & track growth. Rubric?
We use Seesaw here in NZ wiht our Y1 students great for home school ptnshp/feedback
maybe you could track the different genres Ss read. See if they can branch out from regular fiction... Etc
Let me know what you think of it when you finish. I'm always looking for something to add to the stack.
Well, Karen, that just makes me smile. It's always good to hear from you, my friend.
We use this one in our building - LOVE it!
Yeah... Did my reading make sense? Did I fix mistakes? Did I sound like I was talking? etc.?
Did my reading sound smooth (not like a robot)? Did I use expression? Did I pause at periods?
Maybe while recording reading, also have them record their thinking. https://t.co/OhUbeRMB9T
Yeah... Did my reading make sense? Did I fix mistakes? Did I sound like I was talking? etc.?
Wow! Where has the time gone! Thank you for leading this informative discussing. Thanks everyone for sharing!
