A2: We do number talks as well and talk about using our brains to make the best plan to solve the problem. Sometimes it turns out the plan is wrong so we have to try again. #5thchat
  • tikaee May 8 @ 8:20 PM EDT
Number Talks are a great routine to start your math lesson. It is based on mental math strategies and student centered and facilitated learning. @numbertalks #5thchat

A2: As a reading specialist, I don’t teach math HOWEVER, metacognition can be used in ANY lesson in ANY class. I do know that our Ts use numbertalks in math and have Ss explain thinking with exemplars as well. #5thChat #LoveLiteracyLearning

  • mounder_rudolph May 8 @ 8:24 PM EDT
A2: I have ss either write out the steps they used to figure out the problem, or have ss discuss with their elbow partner how they got their answer. They then work together discussing their metacognition along the way. Reciprocal teaching is awesome! #5thchat
  • tikaee May 8 @ 8:24 PM EDT
Why is it important for our students to understand metacognition within any subject and in life in general? #5thchat
  • batool_attiya May 8 @ 8:25 PM EDT
A2: Math is my favorite subject to teach to my Ss. We do a lot of collaborative Learning where students work together on math lessons to explain their reasoning for solving a math problem in a certain way to each other. #5thchat
  • tikaee May 8 @ 8:25 PM EDT

Question #4 will be up in 1 minute! I love this chat! #5thchat
  • dot2teach May 8 @ 8:29 PM EDT
A3 I want my kids to learn that they can be independent thinkers and be able to change course without my input. #5thchat
  • batool_attiya May 8 @ 8:29 PM EDT
A3: Since metacognition is a set of processes that students use to plan and monitor their understanding, knowing about it will make them aware of their own thinking skills and learning preferences. #5thchat

  • mounder_rudolph May 8 @ 8:31 PM EDT
A3: It's important that ss understand matacognition to be successful in life. When they get stuck in a real world problem, it helps them figure out where they went wrong, and it helps them learn from mistakes. #5thchat

A4 Coding!! We are using google's cs-first. I honestly cannot help the kids when they have a problem. They have to be able to retrace their steps, realize what didn't work, and then try again. #5thchat

  • theresaklambert May 8 @ 8:37 PM EDT
A salad The lettuce represents the initial thinking/work.The veggies are the things needed to think about as I reflect upon my work .Will a manipulative help me? Did I use the success criteria? Make the salad and model how the veggies are needed alongside the lettuce.#5thchat

  • mounder_rudolph May 8 @ 8:37 PM EDT
I use Google docs when ss have a writing assignment. I write them questions and comments about different sections of their writing. This allows them to think about their thinking with conventions, ideas, and word choice when writing. They can then respond to me. #5thchat
  • tikaee May 8 @ 8:38 PM EDT
I like how this is outside of the box thinking. May I steal it? #5thchat

Question #5 How do your students share the thinking about their thinking with their families? #5thchat
  • batool_attiya May 8 @ 8:41 PM EDT
A4: Tech has made it easier for Ss to show their thinking through different interactive and engaging platforms such as flipgrid. They take more responsibility for their work + make sure they are thorough with their research before posting anything for review. #5thchat
  • mounder_rudolph May 8 @ 8:41 PM EDT
A5: I think this could be incorporated in ss led conferences. They could show off their projects and share with parents the process they went through to get the final product. #5thchat
  • tikaee May 8 @ 8:41 PM EDT
A5 I encourage my students to write letters to their families and other teachers to explain their thinking. #5thchat

  • batool_attiya May 8 @ 8:48 PM EDT
A5: What a great question Tika! I usually incorporate assignments that require students to have a genuine and knowledgeable conversation about an issue or topic that we are covering in school with their parents. #5thchat
  • tikaee May 8 @ 8:50 PM EDT
Yes, Tom. Our school uses #checkincheckout. Ss check in and check out with a trusted teacher, staff member, or student mentor. They discuss their behavior 2 to 3 times a day. Ss love it! #5thchat
