Hi, Claire! Hope you are having a nice visit!
Hi Claire, glad you are here.
Yes, I am in there. Thanks!
I am definitely excited this is the topic for tonight, I will get some great ideas and insights for when it's my time!
A1: I have teams, but all Ss have a home spot & are able to choose their spot throughout day, lots of nooks, stools throughout room
I went to a unique style this year and am loving it! Fewer chairs and lots of table choices! https://t.co/LxzZMthO5P
A1 Typically I have my desks in clusters of 6. It works nicely for cooperation & other organization. https://t.co/uBjFqA9E55
I rearrange our desks every month to keep the excitement up!
A1 I just went in this morning to rearrange :) Lowered one table so ss can sit on the floor. Raised many desks for standing.
I love it Jane, I want tables, but had to turn desks into tables
A1 I have a few different grouping:Table groups of 4, small round tables for games, and stability balls at my guided reading table.
have a super time....we went to the museum of Play today. So much fun. My daughter is in med tech school.
A1: I have a small room. I can't get very creative. I leave space on carpet for them, that's where I do most whole group.
A student teaches a valuable lesson to the teacher. Read -> DEAR KEVIN - The Learning Lessons Series https://t.co/pm5M6O8uqp
My library/quiet area is in the back, with a rug for whole group instruction by my Apple TV.
how many students do you have?
Love your table groupings.
I got rid of some chairs today:)
A1:Got some great wobble like stools at my guided reading table this year, standing tables have been a hit
A1 it depends on Ss right now 3 rows of 5, fav is squared u
You will love this! My kiddos adapted very quickly!
I love grouping desks into partners of 4. (shoulder and face partners)
A1:Still have my T desk, but all Ss can sit there, haven't been brave enough to get rid of file cabinet and T desk
A1 The heart of any class room, in my opinion, is a large rug for your whole group/meeting area
Do the benefits of group seating outweigh row seating?
This looks fantastic! Did you just move in?
A1 favorite space is the polka dots - each has their own .. next year I want to try flexible seating https://t.co/Wnlv7QpxCV
maybe just for the possibility of different groupings within the groups of desks?
A1-furniture arranged to provide flexible seating and quiet spots for students to go to if they wish https://t.co/7ZknTgHWgN
Glad to hear that! Lowered a table, standing table, found old hs lab stools in storage at school
We also spend lots of time on the floor! I'd say it's about 50/50.
A1. I have desks in groups and chairs; but, I also have scoop rockers, rugs and pillows if someone wants one.
I'm trying to find tables but that is proving difficult so I'm still working with desks. https://t.co/KGl35ZvpH8
I love it Jane, I want tables, but had to turn desks into tables
I think it helps to encourage collaboration!
Ok, take that back, lol. here's mine.
No. Needed to change it up, take the risk...
I wish I had one like I don't have one right now... It's super expensive! https://t.co/ENMaEz0586
A1 The heart of any class room, in my opinion, is a large rug for your whole group/meeting area
That sounds effective, thank you!
especially when you have students who want to "shout" to their friends during that time!
Lucky that our PTG purchased a few yrs ago for all classrooms
Me too! It's on my wish list. They are pricey.
I can see that based on some practicums I have joined in
I added a yoga mat and bath mats for tummy sitting along with scoop rockers, small chairs, crates, etc.
It builds sense of community, encourage discussions and communication. My answer is YES. https://t.co/0Oop8m7T4c
Do the benefits of group seating outweigh row seating?
Faige retired kinder teacher Lurking/observing for ideas for friend who starts her 1st kinder position tomorrow
I am going to get some of those scoop rockers next!
I'm going on a search. I will let you know if I find a good one:)
thank you! Works for Tribes and Kagan strategies from what I see too
A1. Thanks for sharing your pictures ! I moved this year, so I went with table-style seating, but am making notes for next year!
Q1 I have 2 groupings and some separate desks with several tables ,,,I have desk in the far corner of room. https://t.co/GlY46gDqJv
Q1 How is your classroom organized. Share pics if you have them.
A2: This has been a HUGE change up for me this year, all math tools are out and accessible! Working on my MakerSpace items the same
Large rug for group time, small tables for group work, and pillows for reading/working .love everyone's ideas!
follow and for ?s on . :)
I like the idea of at least one stand up table. It makes sense for some of my kiddos -
I will be changing again at Spring break!
Would love to hear ideas as to how these elements are tailored to middle school classrooms. Glad to join everyone!
I have one like . I got mine through https://t.co/xzwaFTvSkV
I wish I had one like I don't have one right now... It's super expensive! https://t.co/ENMaEz0586
A1 The heart of any class room, in my opinion, is a large rug for your whole group/meeting area
I have seen great benefit of standing table (I use desks) this year. Ss can focus so much better!
I saw this idea and need to get some. Totally child driven, my Ss keep trying to nest in the sink! :).
I have 1 of these and 1 nonmoving book shelf. Math manip. are available most of the time for Ss. https://t.co/FqZoHt35LN
levelled readers on the brown bookcase (each bin = one level) Interest books sorted by topic on white case https://t.co/uqADrXquHh
A2: I have a cart with containers for math. My classroom is full of books. All is easy access.
A2 A lot of my manipulatives are on shelves with my recess toys where Ss can access them anytime.
A2 I have a shelf for all math tools. Students are free to get up and get what they need whenever they need.
A2: I keep a math bucket in the middle of student tables at all times as well as binders with math tools.
A2: Ss have access to needed supplies and manipulatives during (newly implemented) guided math. Ss love it!
A2 manipulatives are stored in labeled bins .. super easy for Ss to access their own or put away lost ones https://t.co/ph4RdIpKWK
A1 LOTS of alternative seating 'n tables on wheels that fit link together. Bean bag chairs, wobble stools, cube seats. All moves.
What are in the binders? https://t.co/qizqi0EeRO

A2: I also keep close reading annotation mark reminders and dictionaries in middle buckets.
A2: Shelves with math manipulative tubs labeled & books too!
Best invention ever for ADHD kiddos and ASD Ss!
A2 they are stored on shelves in bins that Ss have access to. They are able to get/return them independently.
discusses mapping out what can't move first, then planning for whole group, small group, and independent areas
A2 - literacy/reading centres organized in bins to match activity chart. Math centres organized the same. https://t.co/dvIt10VN4H
A2:I have the colorful plastic shelving carts and bookshelves
If accessed independently, are there certain times students are "allowed" to access them and do they know the times available?
spend time in a group on floor.. kids are free to lay down and get comfortable during the learning process https://t.co/4BQAxsmxSI
A2 Math manipulatives are organized in their space in the room accessible by students as needed. I need my iPad to upload pictures
I use camping chairs for portable seating. They don't take much space to store
my Ss get them when they are needed to complete an activity they are doing
other math manipulatives (not shown in pics) are in labelled bins in our writing centre for free/easy access.
A2 I have a dozen trays that are built into the counter along one of the walls. They hold all math materials and easy to access.
An exercise ball for guided reading! Who needs the gym?
We need to talk about that Guided math sometime!
ok, that makes sense, thanks!
we have Runtz!! :) LOVE them!
A2:A new thing this yr team reading buckets that are right by their team tables so whenever they have a minute, grab a book
I know right?! Rock hard abs and expert readers. Two birds/one stone.

Kids use them as tools to give access to maematical ideas.
I have yet to find these at Walmart
I have kids falling out of chairs. Great way to start up a gravity conversation.
A2 math tools behind the table . Easy for students to access. Word tools last bins on the left https://t.co/Qf3YAXXRPR
Q2 I have 3 sets of plastic deep drawers for math manips that kids can easily handle,,,,,books are in binds and display shelves
A2 I put 2 hooks on the side of a bookshelf and they hold all our number lines. Got this gem from a colleague.
They JUST showed up at mind. Kept hearing about them. My Ss might be too big though. https://t.co/a39SQ8bOkm
I have yet to find these at Walmart
I mean right! Word work tools are by the yellow box with paper on the right not left.
Everything is labeled with pictures - on the container and on the shelf. Except math - I haven't gotten to that yet.
It's in my weekly job chart for the week. They know who is in charge of keeping the room picked up.
A3:
after reading Learn Like a Pirate, I have put my Ss in charge, it's their room, of course I have to teach them expectations
My one practicum teacher at the end of the day would "assign" duties that enabled cleaning/organizing in her grade 3 class
oh I love this team reading baskets....will try that.
I have not seen those at my Wal-Mart...guess I need to shop w/ a keen eye next time!
A3 At the start of our Information reading unit students organized ALL the informational books in classroom into bins w/labels.
A3- make everything accessible, give them some ownership, allow flexibility, trust their judgement of their needs/what suits them
Sharing this w/colleagues. Preschool & kinders
A3: I have to get better at this. It seems like there is always something going on.
A3 When Ss have a say in clsrm management & can easily access materials, it becomes their classroom & it makes our lives easier!
Back in the toys, near bikes and toy couches, chairs
How's the size for your kids?
A3. My kids clean up their work stations before we go to the next one; each group get to have a fresh start in the station.
Classroom jobs done daily! The Ss love having that responsibility, take pride in it
I call paper "Schnibbies". They pick up scraps of paper if I call them Schnibbies, but not if I call them scraps of paper.
A3 Get their input. Ask them what they think. Problem solve together.
Hi All! Just home from our cabin. Sorry to be joining so late .
We do have end of day routines, but really need throughout the day routines in the midst of the chaos. https://t.co/8Wx28yHPqd
My one practicum teacher at the end of the day would "assign" duties that enabled cleaning/organizing in her grade 3 class
A3 I have table helpers - in charge of tidying up the tables & emptying tidy tub - switches each month .. teaches responsibility
It says up to 50lb, but all of my kids fit in them:)
A3: Build the environment with the Ss! It's not about being "store bought" and pretty. Authentic is better and more meaningful!
I can see this creating accountability and ownership for students. Also preparing them for the next level
A3. an expectation from day 1 that they clean up after themselves. I have tiny brooms and pans they love to use to clean up
We have a job chart, too. Our classroom jobs change weekly.
I've started this also. Thanks So nice to see Ss take responsibility & take care of classroom https://t.co/jFXqAoHS3I
A3 My students had a lot of say where things went. We just did a big move flip. They insisted the"mega" table stayed.
mine change every 2 weeks, it takes us that long to get good at them
A3: kids are paired for class jobs, including class librarians...boosts prob solving & collaboration https://t.co/ovf5kGNtKt
My Star of the Week helps with daily jobs. Ss have access to table supplies that they tidy and organize
A3. Would like to have them organize the room/desks etc sometime to see what happens
I was thinking I have a small tent in my room too. My kids love it when they want a private space or to read with a friend.
Great for all of those books that they may not have room in book boxes & we change them weekly so they are new
Love, love, love all these ideas tonight!!!
A3 If we say it's "our" classroom valuing everyone's input shows it, no? help students decide what works for them
A3: Room inspector as job each wk. Sts in charge of tubs/cleaning up, ready to have sts sharpen pencils in morning too
These are definitely ideas I am going to hang onto!
My students choose a job for the entire week. They choose, so they take pride in it!
A3: My fav is the phone answerer! Sometimes the secretaries call just to listen to them use such manners!
We did a big chunk of my books, but not all. We had a little NF library in the front of our room
My kids have flashlights in theri book boxes and I have small lamp for those who don't. It's magical.
I love the size of this space and the volume of books
Last year, as an EOY countdown activity, I let my Ss put their desks wherever they wanted. It was interesting!
Q3 our school gives out the "golden plunger" award each week which motivates Ss to keep our room neat and tidy.
Hi Sara! Great weekend to be in the outdoors!
How long do the desks stay that way for?
I have a book problem. Many aren't even out. :-(
Sometimes I let them pick from different educational activities when direct instruction/included assessment is done!
A4: It's all in the use of empowering language. "Us" and "we" and "our" whenever referring to the classroom.
Q2- I have an organizer with multi colored bins that houses some of my math manipulatives. Ss have access to those any time
I was confused for a minute, thought you knew my hubby. We own a furniture store. lol!
A3: One Aha for me was giving them enough time between indep. stations to clean up properly, sometimes we are so rushed:(
So going to start doing this! Thanks for the idea! Love twitter!
I also believe if it's my job to help children become life long readers I need to have books they love to read!
Flashright reading after a crazy morning is so calming.
A3 We love our "Safe Place". It a cozy chair in a designated spot where students go when they need some space/time alone for a bit.
A4: They choose their tools and their ways to show their learning. I am improving with this choice. Choice of where they work/read
A4: I have made an expert wall with Ss who feel really helpful with something ( tying shoes, computer assist) Game changer!
Our school does golden plunger for bathroom (in classroom) and golden dust pan for floors, etc.
A4 Include Ss in decision making about clsrm set-up. I just started having a S post to our Seesaw blog to share any learning.
A4: introducing digital journals have put my kids in charge of their learning
A4: My ss are in charge of their tablets, mail boxes, and I try to reinforce they are in charge of themselves and their learning,
A4. So much choice within the workshop setting. If Ss ask to work on reasonable project/idea, I say yes. 1/2
I bought finger flashlights. They come in 4 colors and strap on your pointer finger. Makes tracking fun. https://t.co/VvIQDGaZNN
My kids have flashlights in theri book boxes and I have small lamp for those who don't. It's magical.
A4. We start off year making A Recipe For A Great Year -- they come up with what need to do to make our classroom great !
This is a cool idea!! https://t.co/smqvLjhOde

A3 Chimes or some signal helps them with our transitions.
A4:I have 1 S as student teacher of the week and they do all the jobs. They love it and its a special time.
I have experts, but that's genius to put on an expert wall https://t.co/3ybq4Ma8bK
A4: I have made an expert wall with Ss who feel really helpful with something ( tying shoes, computer assist) Game changer!
A4- We have classroom jobs that are changed weekly. This year's class does a great job taking responsibility w/ these
Me too, I need to bring more in and take some out as they are growing readers. https://t.co/FHiWmmGRF1
I have a book problem. Many aren't even out. :-(
A4 making it our classroom - letting Ss have input and choice with learning spaces
We have experts as well. And Thank goodness for the shoe tying experts!
I also have noise reduction headsets which my students can grab as they need. And read to self tubes. Each learner has unique needs
A4. We have a star of the week, sharing circles, table team posters, class dinosaur, lots of community building activities
Ss have choice during guided reading and guided math when they're not working with me. Spent a lot of time w/expectations Pays off!
Was not bad up north- some rain, but changed to snow. Had an interesting encounter w/ a mad muskrat.
With my multi aged and reading ability class I need to make sure I have something for all.
If you have a dark space, use a black light in a treble lamp & write sight words in "invisible ink" (yellow highlighter on blue)
A4. 2/2.Ss wanted to see clocks/time in math during workshop time, and even though that wasn't listed as choice, I still got it out.
provocations, listen to interests, guide them to find the answers don't tell, let them share their learning https://t.co/yJHz4HoLrY
I'm envisioning a spray painted plunger!
Q4 I have tools available for them to take charge of the classroom. We are smarties and our job is to get smarter every day
A4 They pick where to work, what tool s they need to do their work, if they want to work alone or with a friend etc..
want to hear more about that!!! Hi, Marco, btw!
A4: we have flexible seating in our room- no assigned seats and Ss have been doing nice job making good choices 4 their learning.
YIKES! Those freak me out as I have super fear of rodents:)
A4 My students have jobs. They also lead the classroom routines, morning message, calendar etc.
a4. They've also had direct connection to everything on our walls. They've helped me write and develop most of it.
A4: I encourage my Ss to interrupt and share their ah ha moments with the class
I believe that when we control too many variables in our students lives they don't learn how to control them themselves.
yup! The dust pan has golden glitter all over it!
Q4 we activate our brain by making mistakes.....Ss like to make mistakes on purpose just to get smarter....
A4 My ss are in charge of picking where to work, what to do during Daily 5, morning meeting, their jobs, refocusing themselves, etc
LOL-Muskrat out of den-we were snowbiling on lake. Dog found 1st-dh called her back. Muskrat kept charging us
I am trying to not rush my students. It's better for all of us. Students come before content, not the other way around.
I have to ask.. what's a firstie?
I LOVE it- we started in Dec. Thinking how I will start yr w/ it next year.
A4 Ss learn they have a toolbox of strategies when solving problems and pick one that works for them.
A4. I call them teachers assistants when they share work on the Elmo.
Q5: time!!! make sure I give them enough time to get it done right.
Fun! I saw those once, I need to go back and get some. They are wonderful.
A5: I use Jungle binders for home to school communication. There is a section for all we need, behavior, read log, notes, homework
a first grader - teacher abbreviation. :)
Ahh makes sense! I should've put that one together!
A5: Something easy and stick with it
Q5: model expectations, stay consist, and give time to stay organized.
A5 clean Desk Mon-Star certificates, color coded subject folders, Friday desk clean out, authentic praise to organized Ss
A5: DOT binders - houses everything they need for 1st grade .. no more lost papers!
A5 - high expect., general structure (lots of flexibility within the structure). Key is the relationship you build with each child.
I'm looking for ways to keep erasers from being eaten off of pencils;( Got some biters this year
A5. They can keep their headphones in their desk--That's it. Everything else is communal in labels bins or buckets
A5 proactively practice routines!
A5: in beg. modeling, giving time & not rushing
A5 teach & practice how to organize their stuff!!
A5 Having an organized classroom so students know where things go. It helps TONS!
A5 find those Ss who are very organized & neat. Ask them to "Pick up a little" magic!
A5 The more my Ss know about where things go, the more we can work together to keep our room organized.
Love those little chewed metal ends on pencils! Eeek! I tried the little stick on erasers but they don't last!
A5 We put out table buckets whenever we have a cutting project. When done someone empties bucket. Helps to keeps our floor clean.
I have 1 high & 1 low, 2 regular. Also Ikea stools around table, crate stools, lapdesks, clipboards 4 floor use.
A5 Procedures and structure. Ramping up slowly. Opportunities to reorganize materials regularly.
Some of mine bite off the metal part also! I've seen a plastic tube on a pencil so they can still chew. https://t.co/Rsce0tUBQL
I'm looking for ways to keep erasers from being eaten off of pencils;( Got some biters this year
It just makes me flinch when I see them, poor teeth! And yuck.
A5:I have a shelf for Daily 5 book boxes. Their journals, headphones and books for D5 are kept in there. that helps the desk mess
We have a lost tools tub for items such pattern blocks, etc left behind. End of wk. sts work to put away
I just saw some flavored plastic pieces that go on ends of pencils at a school store, not sure how I feel about that...
A5 Separate locations for learning tools - math, science, word work , building/construction, writing, tech, robots in own spaces
The desk fairy visits our room. Never know when and what she will leave as a reward
A5: I do have a dog clicker hanging on my neck for an attention getter too! Everyone freezes! Never have to raise my voice!
Laura from Mn...joining late! A5:When we have a little bit of spare time, the class organizes our desks together.Desks are the same!
She might need to come back to my room, its been a while
A5 Alway acknowledge "kind" behavior. "Thank you for pushing in your friend's chair or picking that up…that was so helpful."
Flashlight Friday's as a rotation a big hit
I know this sounds crazy but I give them gum. Works.
I hear this! Do I want to invest in better flashlights than the dollar store?
A5 I discovered that open boxes make great pencil boxes and act like drawers...boxes are from target. https://t.co/eACK9H6zh8
A5. Everyone helps cleanup and sweep up every time and Floor Inspectors make sure floors are clean
Ask your students to bring them in!
These are the lapdesks I have. Got mine from Micheal's.Romanoff Lap Tray, Blue Romanoff Products Inc https://t.co/EoXjAJCyal
I have a desk/room inspector. That is a very serious job.
I have a whistler! Think it would work for him?
A6. I really struggle with this. I want to keep things fresh but I need some good go to lessons.
A6; I've started keeping plans on google drive and share with partner T, can adjust as I go then to reflect and refer to next year
A6 - organized by topic in binders. Everything changes year to year depending on students in the class, easy to pull what I need :)
Wow! Brave...had gum on carpet this yr..wasn't fun!
A6: I've been playing around w Google Sheets for lesson plans...anyone else?
A6: I am utilzing Participate Learning and https://t.co/Zb1Evza5tZ . I have some binders, but trying to put it all on google docs.
A5 I have NO assigned jobs. We are in it together as a community. Helps curb "it's not mine" or "it's not my turn".
A6 I store all my plans on Google Drive. Make sure to title them with what reading/math/etc lesson you're on.
I used cans from the cafeteria and covered w/contact paper and duct tape.
From flexible seating to rotation choice. Tweets 2look in designing classroom culture What is we want 4sts https://t.co/ZANKmLpTCF
A6 my colleague and I created a google spreadsheet that has all the lessons laid out for the year
A6: I don't like to use much of the same things yr to yr,base each yrs new Ss, I do my plans on Google Docs and that helps organize
A6: I know you might think I'm crazy, but all lesson plans are thrown away at the end of each year! I start fresh! after 28 years
I've been lucky this year. Had that last year and had to stop the gum. :(
This sounds essential!! https://t.co/YbX0xwpxU0
A6 I store all my plans on Google Drive. Make sure to title them with what reading/math/etc lesson you're on.
A6 ours are digital and it's great! Easy access. Keep paper copy of current plans in room for reference and file in binder on Fri
my summer project. New job=new binders needed.
A6 I have a copy of my day plans if I don't know what to do, but I rarely repeat lessons 'cause students are so different.
A6 I create a digital template once I get my specials schedule. Make copies and keep them in binder with most recent in front.
My mind is so bad, I like to keep notes on what worked and what didn't on my plans, or I don't remember:)
I don't do same thing every year, but core math & reading I add to and tweak, not invent new each year.
A6: Plans on Google Drive..don't really look back over yrs before.
I love Google Drive! Our best ideas are no longer "secrets."
A5: The tops of copy boxes in students' desks keep it organized too!
My weekly plans are in Google Doc too. I can access anywhere as needed.
A6 I use Evernote for lesson planning.
Never even considered this!!! Thank you!
Completely lost track of time tonight. Wedding planning is very time consuming. See you next week!
A6: my plans are on Google Drive.
A6 - this is how I organize my materials/lessons/units. Easy to find what I need within each bin/binder :) https://t.co/iGrpwnu8z1
A6: I use and love it. Especially for documenting standards
A7:we are in the midst of our history unit and my Ss are all sucked in and curious each day who we are learning about
Wow! So organized! I wish.....
A7: trying Genius Hour! My Ss love it! I may be crazy, but it's fun!
A7 I LOVE the community of learners I have. Multi aged but when asked each like that it's multi aged Gr1,2 and 3 together.
A7: excited about my Ss Wonder Project, join next week to talk about genius hour/wonder projects. I'll be guest moderating!
This has been another inspiring chat! Thanks & for moderating a lively discussion. Have a great week!
