  • fourmonkeypress Jan 22 @ 9:37 PM EST
A1: When I was a classroom teacher our math block was 60 minutes and began with a 5 minute whole group activity and then broken down into small group rotations. Honestly though...we integrated math throughout our day by using the project approach. Lots of fun! #ecechat
  • DanWuori Jan 22 @ 9:38 PM EST

A2. Posing real life problems to solve. Don’t rescue but prompt for deeper thinking. Even the littles can explain their thinking.. the teacher has to be willing to step back #ECEchat

A2: I think solving social problems can help with math skills. We use a six step problem solving system in my room. You could say that could help in the future with multi-step math problems--not everything can be solved right away. #ecechat

  • jazzmeister2013 Jan 22 @ 9:51 PM EST
Definitely one of the great things about centers, and learning through play, so many concepts and skills are addressed with regularity. Having fun while learning. The joys of teaching! #ecechat

  • katyphinney Jan 22 @ 9:58 PM EST
    Q5 Coming up in 1 minute #ECEchat
  • jazzmeister2013 Jan 22 @ 9:58 PM EST
A4- Manipulatives. Getting hands-on to engage in math learning. Allows for individual engagement, peer-to-peer collaboration, and opportunities for formative assessment to help drive further instruction. That, and they are fun for the students to work with! #ecechat
  • jazzmeister2013 Jan 22 @ 9:59 PM EST
Yes! Love using play-doh with the students for literacy and math concepts. Shaving cream as well. Hands-on, tactile learning. #ecechat

Q5: How do you involve parents in math practice and support at home? #ECEchat
  • katyphinney Jan 22 @ 10:00 PM EST
A5 I like to give parents a task to complete at home in a weekly newsletter, such as: count how many shoes you have at home, find the #8 around the house, make a pattern with clothes, what shape is your food… #ecechat
  • fourmonkeypress Jan 22 @ 10:02 PM EST
A5: I have seen some really cool family math nights! @OPS_StandBear has one coming up! #ecechat

    Q6 Coming up in 1 minute #ECEchat
  • BlossJulie Jan 22 @ 10:05 PM EST
A5 Family activities that are simplistic, easy and optional- bonus points if everything needed is provided ✂️ . #ECEchat
  • lindsay8503 Jan 22 @ 10:05 PM EST
A5: I send handouts home on easy, hands on math activities. I'll also identify math goals for each child at conferences and give parents tips on how to help their son/daughter at home. #ecechat
  • katyphinney Jan 22 @ 10:09 PM EST
I completely agree, we need to make it easy on the families, they have a LOT to do when everyone gets home, they are more likely to participate in the activity if everything is included or they can use items found in their home! #ECEchat
