Q3: How do you assess the effectiveness of learning?

More technology in the classrooms!
-
The learning gap from those that have access to internet would have to be a big consideration
-
-
A1 I think there need to be more computer labs and more technology sources available to students
-
NOW What are the physical changes needed to make our aging school buildings more relevant for 21st Century Learners? Thoughts?

What are the physical changes needed to make in our aging school buildings to make them more relevant for 21st Century Learners?
-
WiFi routers in each classroom!
-
Be still our techie hearts! See how is inspiring a new generation of computer gurus
-
-
Simultaneously need to add more collaborative spaces and more private spaces (for online learning).
-
I agree. Most classrooms do not have enough technology for students to use
-
However, as we move into this new age, physical learning spaces will need to change also.
-
is the physical change as important as a cultural change in a school ...
-
Hi ! Kimberly in Seattle here. A1: Aging buildings could make for great PBL opps.
-
Thanks Shawn... Curious, why more labs rather than giving each student and teacher a computer?
-
Move some of the classroom online, where virtual environments can look like anything and do not fall into disrepair! :)
-
-
you can have tech out the wazoo and all 21st century but if your school culture sux ... Your school sux.
-
A1, part two: Unbolted tables and chairs, for starters.
-
I agree. I feel that people (especially myself) do better in a quiet area for online learning
-
A1 tables instead of desks, wifi, smart boards, makerspace, collaborative rooms, media rooms, to name a few
-
-
I think it is important to have both. Labs so students can work together, individual technology for private work
-
More flexible instructional & collaborative spaces & additional electrical outlets to support digital devices.
-
I think we need to get rid of old-school desks and chairs. Create more collaborative spaces.
-
-
Sadly, nearly 20 yrs into tech revolution education still has a 'have and have not' situation w/r to technology.
-
More technology in classrooms!
-
culture is a huge part of the problem. if people don't get along or have enough "relationships", things won't work
-
Join IN PROGRESS Topic: What physical changes are needed to make aging school buildings more relevant for 21st Century Learners?

-
We need to be more intentional about using all spaces for a greater percentage of the day.
-
-
How is the gym used during a prep?
-
Learning can happen anywhere it's the process that needs to change, "stop focusing on process, teach for questions"
-
How long until we move away from the industrial style of grades and into individual learning? That will dictate physical space also
-
Furniture and spaces that encourage collaboration. White board tables and walls...ability to plug and present to peers
-
-
Topic:What are the physical changes we need to make in our aging school buildings to make them more relevant for 21st Cent Learners?
-
I think the culture change needs to come FIRST. Physical change comes second. Both important. https://t.co/yGxr9FQi7V
-
NOT just 21st Century Learners who need school buildings to be relevant…also true for all students, teachers, principals, parents
-
If you are lucky enough to have a stage, how often is it used?
-
-
-
-
As cultural change begins 2shift, Ts realize they need more flexibility w tech & Ss spaces Envir parallels lrng
-
-
Thanks Cheyenne... curious from your experience how much tech is the norm on classrooms?
-
learning has more to do with attitude than the physical building ...
-
How is the cafeteria used before and after lunch?
-
-
Great point. Learning to use spaces intentionally is really difficult
-
How about classrooms modeled on Apple Stores?
-
-
Do Wow-Worthy Spaces actually produce wow-wee learning and teaching?
-
Yes agree! When I add old-school furniture it suggests schools aren't investing in active learning https://t.co/r1UvPnPr7b
-
I would love to see a complete reinvention of the school library...makerspace is a start but more progress needs to be made
-
Keith here from Nj HS Educator
-
the school I work at, the stage is almost never used
-
So true! We're beginning to add seating and outlets in hallways. Ss work outside rooms when making videos https://t.co/jP1QOxt9fa
-
Thanks Shawn... what's your expeeince been with using labs vs laptops? When is one better than other?
-
physical changes need to follow the learning needs of the students. Not too much we can do with physical space short of rebuilding
-
Schools need more spaces dedicated to collaborative learning. Desks in rows do not fit the bill.
-
-
Physical changes to schools for 21st century learners... We can start with air conditioning and more bandwidth
-
IF EVERY SPACE is a learning space then what makes a space more/less relevant than another space?
-
if there are no relationships and no love for learning, work will not be done or will not be done well
-
Good evening Debbie... sounds great! Is your room set up that way?
-
How do we use outdoor spaces other than for recess?
-
Schools need more spaces dedicated to collaborative learning. Desks in rows will not fit the bill.
-
No "class sets" of anything. Variety provides choice. Also, more soft seating! Plastic chairs are the worst.
-
-
I’m not sure we have enough wow-worthy spaces yet to determine the impact on learning.
-
Update Why many high-stakes testing foes see ‘modest’ progress in No Child Left Behind rewrite https://t.co/4w6v11ynxC
-
-
Personally, I am a college student. I find that using the labs is much better for group projects and class work.
-
MUST learning spaces be physical? Might they be virtual?
-
-
makerspace would be great to have in a library!
-
How does the move away from the industrial model change our use of space?
-
I think it depends on the community. A rural community's needs are different than urban
-
Excellent visual! Move away from "Ford Model" of school design (desks in straight rows f4passing papers down the line)
-
-
oh, Kris... I knew someone would ask that question. Why you?
-
a few of our spaces that promote 21st century learning -collaborative, colorful - wish we had wheels. https://t.co/7z4gAfT8ot
-
laptops are better for personal work and working on your own personal time
-
anyone have a fav resource for resumes for undergrads? I've switched to mostly CV style so I'm out of touch...
-
A1 Ask T's what they'd like and need in an ideal space. Take clues from S's. What are they responding best to tech-wise now? .
-
Why isn't every wall a whiteboard wall? Where can we add physical display spaces for Ss work?
-
Culture And Climate trumps all, All of the time
-
I think there needs to be comfortable seating, different seating types, and larger space for spreading out
-
Move away Factory model classrooms by refusing to buy & use student desks.
-
A1 allowing collaborative situation can occur in any structure, culture of instruction needs to embrace 21st century
-
Wow-Worthy is VISIBLY DIFFERENT
-
-
There are a lot more flipped classrooms now, so there really are more virtual learning spaces
-
Can a physical change precede a cultural change?
-
More collaborative spaces? S choice of instruction times? More a college feel with more individualized learning?
-
would you let students have a say in designing the layout?
-
No more desks... I would like to have different sized tables, seat crates, etc. I'm thinking more like coffee shop.
-
-
-
. Power for one thing. Even with longer battery life if kids are using 24/7 (and they are) they have to recharge.
-
Change libraries to more collaborative learning spaces. Be willing to break down walls between disciplines to co-teach more.
-
We replaced heavy rect tables in library w square tables on wheels. IDEAL 4 multi-purpose activiti Ts and Ss move them 4 grp needs
-
-
-
Schools need to supply power charging stations.
-
RT : Schools need more spaces dedicated to collaborative learning. Desks in rows will not fit the bill.
-
Perhaps the myth of "seat-time" is not actually going to go away until we rid ourselves of conventional "seats" in classroom.
-
Wheels are HUGE! Our lab can transform in minutes to accommodate a change in activities
-
we do have wifi, 1:1 devices, smart boards, and some rooms w/tables...u can always move old desks into groups
-
-
Listen to Chase.... Named it!
-
We're looking at putting charging stations in the student locker rooms for student devices
-
-
FIFTEEN YEARS into the 21st century…aren’t all students 21st century learners? Thoughts please…
-
I don't see why not. start the classroom one way, and allow the children to change it how they like?
-
Great reminder! I need to find more reasons to use our stage.
-
virtual spaces are very tempting, but a classroom with a teacher is still preferable
-
-
We don't have a single 1-piece desk in entire school.
-
we have limited funds for new furniture unlike my last school - we might try and hack our old stuff!
-
Thanks Alfred.... that point is often overlooked. And, batteries wear out...
-
White board walls should be added! It makes it easier for the students to collaborate and work together.
-
-
-
-
Our school does not use our stage, except for school-wide assemblies. maybe use them for classes?
-
Learning space can be blended, use of tools such as moodle, blackboard, Google classroom, can transform also
-
Yes! And note to designers. Tables on wheels vs Chairs on wheels. The latter can = "go carts" 4 tweens
-
it's more of an adaptive challenge. If a teacher is limited by physical space, he/she is likely limited in creativity as well.
-
-
. Absolutely! A place to lock devices would be nice too. Many elementary school buildings don't have lockers.
-
Yes, I want their ideas to permeate the school. Many schools focus on the hallways but we can do better than that.
-
no - some of our urban students have been impacted by digital divide alive in many schools before joining us
-
my old college had study rooms where every wall was a whiteboard. it made studying and group row much easier
-
I like the desks I've seen in the halls for small group work or RSP pullouts. stuff like that fosters collaboration w/out disruption
-
Thanks... particular grade level? Subject?
-
-
I don't think so. too close to each other and not a comfortable environment for some
-
As a spanish teacher, to learn new vocab, practice real language. Get them moving and learning
-
A world is one of my favourite virtual learning spaces
-
We could absolutely use them for classes.
-
Today's students are digital natives, Ts need to empower Ss to be 21st century learners, doesn't happen automatically
-
-
How can we make schools more comfortable than the institutional buildings that most are?
-
Absolutely! In 2nd year of our 1:1 model, installed power strips in library hallway with seating for "low battery" issues
-
RELEVANT LEARNING SPACES connect the dots — Net generation students, learning theory, and technology. How have you done this?
-
WHAT COMES FIRST the design of learning spaces or design of lessons? Think about it, then react…
-
-
This thing is more about control & keeping students in their seats than moving & interaction! https://t.co/NcgvgrmZ1J
-
-
Indeed, a tragedy... Is this an alterable circumstance? if so how?
-
has some awesome heavy duty caster wheels - we are using them in building mobile workbenches
-
How is your kitchen used once lunch is over? Couldn't students gain ownership in that space?
-
what is a "classroom" can be the park, a river, places like Fab Lab or
-
. Desks on wheels can allow for group work. Portable devices rather than desktop systems too!
-
-
Hacking your old stuff is half the learning! Lateral Thinking!
-
a few of my college classes have them and it is accessible for 20 students to be using at the same time.
-
What do you think of standing desks?
-
A1 There are lessons to be learned from theater stage craft and tech- easy transformation of sets, i.e. classes. Just a thought.
-
absolutely - need policy for ALL and great orgs like to be advocates/support
-
-
I would have to say lessons first..it can effect the way the classroom is set up
-
space must be flexible to match lesson design. Everyday brings new space needs
-
Now we're talking. How would you reconfigure closets and cabinets?
-
Yes, laptops and mobile devices make for movement & collaborating anywhere.
-
I fully agree - let's make the entire building accessible to all at all times
-
design of the lesson. You can't know how to reach the goal if you don't know what the goal is
-
for sure... so what's a 20th century learner? 19th century learner? Isn't learning...learning? Just asking...
-
it makes learning much easier, especially for a visual, hands-on learner
-
-
-
-
We have standing Cafe tables in our media center already!
-
-
-
Wow chick or egg Instruction has to shift 1st in my mind Great T's just make it work until the building catches up
-
Hmmm, we could magnetize it and then create feedback right next to it.
-
. the issue isnt the furniture but the teacher centered/controlled environment it represents
-
So lesson design drives space?
-
Lessons come first, space can enhance the lesson, quality student centered lessons can be adapted to any space
-
I think having the option to sit or stand is optimal
-
color, comfortable spaces, nooks to collaborate, our STEAM class re-designing the student lounge + outdoor classroom
-
break down walls... and utilize more and ! at it's finest. :)
-
I think the key is to provide a variety of work space options (quiet, group, indiv) and use spaces flexibly.
-
-
-
space can be a catalyst for learning
-
I disagree to some extent. The issue is furniture that is designed to be in rows &...
-
-
"Is this an alterable circumstance?" Yep. That we ask so openly exposes our white privilege & hypocrisy.
-
space needs to be flexible enough to match lesson design daily. Current buildings are not flexible enough...
-
Well said Jessica... So why the heck do these things get backwards?
-
Will remodeling schools to accommodate 21st Cent learners be enough to bring along many of our 20th Cent educators?
-
How would it effect the set up?
-
I find myself designing lessons around the space and resources I'm given. So I turn rows of tables into pairs and groups of 4.
-
And furniture that is designed to restrict movement.
-
-
biggest physical change to classrooms over the last 100 years: blackboards are now whiteboards. We can do better.
-
-
I am more of a visual learner, which makes it much easier for me to discuss the topics with other students.
-
what is the space is a vacuum (aka empty)
-
-
To justify a $$ proposal, Ts need 2 demo changes in methods using existing furn, then submit visuals+reasons https://t.co/fCtjlwQ1cl
-
-
student Art, non-fluorescent lighting, plants, outside time with my classes, and workshops to promote creativity
-
I agree, allow kids the freedom to choose seating conducive to their learning
-
-
One of my classrooms has a whiteboard wall and everyone can participate
-
my past experience has been that space de-design can be a catalyst for late adopters
-
depending what the lesson requires students to do, they may need more desk space or more moving space
-
BEFORE we can “rethink” space for relevant learning we must think about learning, then relevancy… correct?
-
IF relevancy is contextual, what role does culture, geographic location, or other variables play in determining context? Thoughts?
-
Does a PBL lesson necessitate same space as a Direct Teach Lesson?
-
Too often LCD projectors & tech has only served to keep classrooms factorylike...especially when used in overhead projector mode.
-
Too often LCD projectors & tech has only served to keep classrooms factorylike...especially when used in overhead projector mode.
-
-
yes, but ditch the tired 'instructional' methods first, new furniture won't change mindset
-
A2 Seems obvious to me that you need to decide what you're doing before you decide what you need in order to do it, no?
-
better chance to be completely flexible! moveable walls! (Unless your talking about outer space)
-
-
The expensive/permanent changes made during physical change should happen AFTER understanding purpose.
-
I say ditch both. Furniture can & does restrict mindset thought. It limits!
-
Thanks Lisa... what about measurable and improved learning/teaching results? Would that help justify $$$$
-
Please join tonight at 8pst to discuss school culture.
-
Yes, That was the WHOLE purpose of the industrial model: Teacher exerting power and control over students.
-
-
Seating should fit the space some class may Benifits from yoga balls stools bean bags sofas etc it depends on class
-
Absolutely. PBL needs more large tables, direct teach could be small sections
-
The lesson needs to come first. Space should be flexible enough to accommodate ss centered lrng
-
-
As a student I find buildings with ample natural light (which aging buildings often lack) more conducive to learning.
-
We have whiteboard table tops for mapping out ideas & sketching notes then to record and share
-
I worry about that T that can't think/teach their way around a desk. But yes, ideally both.
-
-
my S change spaces 2 suit learning & make the space work 4 them, 'evolving space not static design'
-
I'd like to set up my room to easily switch between PBL and direct teaching. Both have a place
-
know we're thinking... the 'amoeba like' school or classroom. Conforms to lesson design... Push button?
-
WHAT’S THE ROLE OF COMMUNITY is designing, implementing, and reining relevant learning spaces?
-
-
Ss can always search for a process Why requires research and analysis. Is it the blding or access to tech need to change
-
I think that flexibility in space and allowing the space to reflect the purpose is essential. Tech infrastructure is key, as well.
-
do you find these beneficial for your students?
-
that would also be very helpful in classrooms for students to work together.
-
Maybe its more about being responsive and taking the lesson to where the learning is more impactful?
-
We constantly rearrange our room to suit the lesson.
-
-
I think you can take great ideas from community, but your setup depends on your students and lessons
-
I see too many changes made based up appearance instead of functionality.
-
I would like to see that space as more adaptable. Having smaller tables with wheels.
-
contextual relevant learning must take into consideration of geography/culture..instruction must be relevant to Ss
-
so sort of -> speck out of your eye,' when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye...
-
No But it surely helps! Without the physical change many just can't "see" it. But of course the mindset change is key.
-
-
Ideally, the community is integrated into the school, and thus school design.
-
A redesigned space though can't make bad teaching better!
-
-
I think the space where learning occurs is very important
-
Huge benefit! Space to work and it encourages students to improve and rework
-
Seating face2face&side-by-side promote a atmosphere, dinner hour, equal voice/equal regard. global mind.
-
space 2 learn is virtual, mental, physical & emotional & Ss who have power 2 manage their space really experience SCL
-
For many students in needy areas school is an escape from overwhelming circumstances. Comfort can encourage learning.
-
Great Question! Our Ts survey clases each yr. Results shared w Princ + Dir of Curricu. Qual Data> pos change https://t.co/vya4vZMuEd
-
Would realigning and varying class times go along with the idea of creating better environments for 21st Century learners?
-
thanks... makes so much sense. How often do we do this?
-
Depending on where you live does play an important role in the set up
-
-
what age group do you use this for?
-
love this idea they can be real time 4 news and what's happening in all classes via of a T post https://t.co/lgxgGtvUIk
-
reworking problems would be really nice on a whiteboard wall or table top.
-
I agree! And great teaching and learning can happen in difficult spaces, but environment can make an impact.
-
-
-
Agreed, adaptability seems to be a key design principle in modern classrooms.
-
Thanks Jennifer... in your expeeibce how often is that ideal attained?
-
Yes, difficult spaces hamper fantastic teaching.
-
Role of community: vote for school board members who wisely spend funds and welcome , respond to, and encourage com. input
-
so where you're living, how are classrooms set up?
-
Tip of the Day: Did you know you can use Zaption Presenter for virtual video presentations? https://t.co/YdaboFQ3Ug
-
Bring in a cushioned couch, chairs, & tables into the classroom. We have areas designated as the "living room." Kids love it.

3 Excellent Google Drive Extensions for Teachers: December 1, 2015
In today's post, we select... https://t.co/Fsih5Mjzvj
-
"Example is still the most powerful teacher..." -Learning by Doing
-
We shouldn't get caught up in what's relevant at the cost of learning. "Relevant" doesn't always mean effective.
-
-
-
-
-
I imagine that schedule constraints just as imp to change as space use issues. Flex is key
-
-
I think so - truly remaking learning requires re-imagining "time"
-
community of learners dictates the environment needed to some extent, secondary vs elementary, Ss needs need to be foremost
-
True! And that comfort can be inexpensive. Purchased plastic adirondak chairs >end of summer > $15
-
looking for a free iPad app for Ss to create animated GIFs. Suggestions?
-
It's not about grades, cool tech, or passing a test. The goal of educ is to help people gain skills to succeed. (2/2)
-
Thanks Lisa... and then what happens?
-
-
I expect and facilitate community participation and feedback. We are limited, but w/ teamwork & flexibility, we rock!
-
A design principal in many modern spaces. Startups, art museums, etc.
-
Update Looking for Amethyst - For many years, I took a very traditional “teacher” stance in everything ... https://t.co/ULKrwlgFPX
-
-
. stable fibreoptic connections to isolated rural schools would be a start!
-
-
students are more willing to illustrate - adults like to brainstorm and make lists
-
I do think comfort is key! It is difficult to focus if distracted by the unnecessary. :)
-
I want to be a student in her classroom ->
-
Many of the “physical changes” needed in older schs involve behind-the-scenes infrastructure like bandwidth & electrical.
-
-
Student Centred Learning - just ran out of characters - sorry :)
-
What comes first the chicken or the egg? The building or the culture?
-
Awesome so Ss were part of the design process? SS choice & buy in will make this a success😊 https://t.co/S8gJjDSlBg
-
-
-
Oh yes, absolutely! Need to adjust physical space and use of time. Adjustable/adaptable day to day and min to min
-
-
Is the average bell schedule (even block) a deterrent to modernizing school buying modern furniture?
-
-
-
-
-
Great question! I think that culture can defeat building, but building supports culture.
-
can work to develop both at same time - takes effort and intentionality
-
I'm moving my tables 3-4 times a week, HS science. Ss still thrown off each time. Programmed deeply that change = problem.
-
Ed spaces designed by the people who inhabit them! With beauty and functionality in mind
-
... indeed 'climate, comfort, secure' matter... grow from there.
-
More $ was allotted 4 flexible seating. Each year more Ts requested triangular desks. Budget allowed 4 3 rms per yr.
-
yes! It's a 10th grade elective class!
-
Lab design in science classes is HUGE! I am speaking from experience. :)
-
the idea is to meet every kids where they are and push forward with community participation
-
Don't wait on $$. Use space smarter NOW. Use hallways, clear out closets, take legs off tables... https://t.co/QDsS964VDH
-
-
I think a community can be beneficial if they are all at the same level of performance
-
Being connected &collaborating on these ideas offers a great deal of transparency to those involved, but how many edus are connected?
-
we want our kids to be life long learners - how often do we model our own learning?
-
definitely an interesting difference in learning and experience with the same tools
-
-
-
-
-
By learning from her here, you are a part of her classroom.
-
This isn't especially tech-relevant, but basics are universal- build to allow air, light, space, & comfort. Equipment is secondary.
-
Felt bad submitting a 7 pg lesson plan to my P today for tomorrow's observation but doesn't fit in the template
-
We built offices w/ foam-core to set up "News Network" stations. Fantastic w/ total engagement. https://t.co/Wcs0mmr2qV
-
Environments conducive to cross curricular integration at the secondary level. Learning academies, More fluid, less rigid
-
We need to be able to teach kids to grow, think, collaborate, create in any space. Tools and process is more important that space.
-
well, we could do worse. Abraham M. was a mighty smart person...
-
You're right on target, Jennifer!
-
No. Remodeling without re-visioning the role of school won't change anything, imho.
-
kids (and everyone) loves it when they contribute meaningfully to their environment!
-
I think fewer than we need are connected! We have a lot of rebuilding to do!
-
-
Powerful insight Scott. Thanks ->
-
-
Definitely culture. We can make changes to space now for free! Without the culture, space means nothing
-
-
make change predictable and comfortable, involve yen and it'll relax -promise!
-
Big part of classroom set up, I'm not making students strain their necks. I hate the circle set up, as a student gives me a headache
-
allow Ss to design space for their learning as needed allows problem solving and buy in to lessons
-
Changes also involve tchrs who are willing to give up control. Move from ty
-
-
-
builds ownership and a sense of community - it takes trust and flexibility to give
-
My new T hires were all asked to draw their "dream classroom" at their interviews. those images said A LOT
-
-
this is similar to the tech debate. We can make new advances, but it requires personal commitment to use.
-
I would say to sharing control on decisions and learning
-
Yet another fine example of PLN Power in action ->
-
Yep! We need to change the culture before any other change will be effective.
-
YES - and a strong eye with design for any students who need more space for wheelchairs, etc.
-
-
-
Learning is not routine; our classrooms shouldn't be either. Change is good.
-
What defines a relevant learning space?
-
-
Thanks bunches. Learning lots from you tonight...
-
-
-
Agreed. Sometimes I think my room looks lame, but then I remember I can reach all of my Ss and work flow is productive

its great to review on as well the other ideas in the room are shared and connected!
-
Bingo! Thanks for your teaching Eliza!
-
when we re-designed active learning spaces in last school each pod had a computer station and AV in front and back of room
-
-
-
you can build a dream school... but fill it with the same ideas, systems and people, no change.
-
I love that idea for interviews.
-
-
Learn a good amount about Ts priorities and creativity.
-
Isn't it a bit of a chicken and egg? A new physical environment supports different types of learning.
-
I agree! Imagine a space that allows community engagement throughout the year! Bring the "out" In and support will grow!
-
Yes! If we build it, they will budget for it!
-
What will help reinforce a culture that cultivates learning at home as well as in the classroom?
-
-
-
-
How one student simultaneously did 2 bachelor’s degrees at 2 separate schools in 2 different subjects https://t.co/JPPlaThl9Y
-
-
-
... honestly, i do not know. So question for you, who should design relevant learning space?
-
redesign can get teachers out of comfort zones... but they can very easily reconfigure and get back into old habits!
-
-
when we rank the "best schools" on test scores - we need to re-imagine more than space.
-
spaces for all learners, spacial design solves many issues/ also creates a positive vibe
-
learning is about S progress, regardless of cool tech, fancy stuff or spaces - where r S at & how 2 support progress
-
-
-
Who is best able to decide what is relevant?
-
-
-
Thanks for your teaching this evening... Learning lots from our exchange!
-
absolutely changing mindset of Ts to embrace 21st century is essential and key to Ss success in the space
-
Good teachers create effective learning environments & spaces for students;
To take risk
Feel safe to mistakes
Grow in confidence
-
I think the best way to make kids "college & career ready" is to make sure we don't kill their love of school with testing overkill.
-
-
-
Space and design can reflect priority - is there space for effective professional learning? collab?
-
-
-
Relevant may be different for a math T who wants xtra white boards vs. a MFL T who wants recording niches
-
I've asked elem students to design dream school... it is a difficult task for them...
-
Yes, Teamwork, flexibility created by a COOPERATIVE COMMUNITY SPIRIT.
-
failure promotes growth When my students never fail I fear I'm not challenging them to grow. The hardest part is Ss thinking it does

Great point! Design NEEDS to have specific teacher input to be most effective.
-
. It's also difficult for adults.
-
-
-
this is a great point... a walk into a classroom or learning space quickly reveals the teacher's priorities
-
Your classroom is what YOU make it. Your attitude toward physical space/limitations will dictate the culture of your class
-
if relevant is relative term then for whom does relevancy matter? Perhaps she define what is relevant
-
and teacher's priorities very quickly become the students' priorities!
-
Hard to imagine leaving Ts on the outside of learning space design. I'd also bring along as many shop teachers as you can find
-
-
All Ss love learning before school, we need to make sure that is still the case after, as well.
-
By definition, relevant spaces will need to adapt over time. adaption-ready
-
I asked my 4th graders and it was difficult for them as well - its easier to redesign and hack what we have
-
-
PLN POWER happening here ->
-
-
And 4 partial refurnishing of library, we had T committee > lots of input bc space is shared
-
I would say ask the students what is important and relevant, use that to decide. They are the focus of the class
-
Or are we taught PD in a one size fits all, teacher centered classroom ;)
-
We also cannot underestimate the power of our SPACE to INSPIRE thought and creativity.

As a student, I consider anything that effectively helps me learn to be relevant
-
-
Mindset of failure can inhibit Ss, mindset of "learning" creates Ss who keep trying, "failure" opportunity to learn
-
its also a "cheap" hack to paint on the dry erase (or so I hear)
-
-
I believe you start with the people- what are the goals and needs of the T's & S's who will be most effected? https://t.co/2UHI4y5Gu4
-
-
-
I always check out the classrooms in which I am learning - some are definitely richer in inspiration! :)
-
-
Was in modern new open concept school today. Glass and open doors. Still looked like school to me. Change comes from how not where.
-
The dream school has far more to do with the relationships inside of it.
-
Nailed it! Emery you're rocking tonight. Thanks for bring your a-game!
-
who is responsible for the design of the space? Do Ts advocate and take ownership of the faculty room?
-
I love leading a PD session and moving all the furniture. Makes people smile as soon as they walk in.
-
-
-
Excellent! So it was worth the extra effort...correct?
-
-
-
-
I think if they do not, it is a reflection of climate within the school (and a red flag)!
-
agreed failure poor choice of wording challenging opportunity to learn much better sounding!
-
-
Absolutely! Teachers have ownership of new space. Library is more popular than ever 4 classes
-
no matter the space, you can walk into a classroom and "feel & see" engagement, true 21st century atmosphere can be any space
-
-
Love it - start with the people! Always a starting point for strong education!
-
discussion, compromise, negotiation and the ability to move things around to reflect the nature of learning are crucial.
-
-
. They can't think outside of trad classroom. It's all they know. My Ss are taken back when they see tables not desks
-
#1447 If you give children a lot of space, it may surprise you where they'll go... Nancy Gibbs
https://t.co/5ocBIlGiEE
-
Disagree w/ "chicken&egg" mentality. Ts can still lecture to room full of bean bags&standing tables. Space does not change teaching
-
I agree! Many of the 21st century skills go beyond tech. Consider the Walden approach!
-
give S power of choice with freedom to change space it reflects their inspiration through their actions
-
<===> <===> is a protected area for & ;)
-
Yes, interpersonal relationships matter: Student to tchr; tchr to Ss; Ss to Ss.
-
-
Maybe a pre-activity where they talk about other places where they learn? How do those spaces, sound, look, feel?
-
-
-
I haven't tried that yet... you could hack old tables or desks with dry erase paint
-
-
When I walk into a room I love seeing evidence of learning on the walls, not a multitude of store-bought posters.
-
-
Innovative spaces do not create innovative teachers. But innovative teachers WILL create innovative spaces.
-
-
-
They might complain at the beginning but they usually don't complain by the end.
-
-
cool... keep me posted. Thanks
-
Do you ask S 4 feedback or 2 feedforward 2 reflect how space is used? What is their perception?
-
teaching can change a space! You don't have to wait till a new lab is built to redefine your current space!
-
-
-
I am experimenting with the physical space of the room this year, trying real hard to let the personality of the students shape it
-
-
-
-
I have to teach my Ss how to sit and work in different groupings, how to be respectful in any space.

Got to go PLN great being here keep learning see you next time
-
Yes! I agree, we have to build it first
-
Yes, most have only seen one model; desks, rows, or semi-circles. Seating can be social/cognitive engineering.
-
Thanks goes out to our moderators & & all who participated in the chat. We saw some veteran folks today
-
-
-
Classroom redesign is not about buying new desks to replace old ones; it's about rethinking the space entirely.
-
Thanks Keith... you rocked the house tonight!
-
are Ts expecting too much? How woukd Ts in developing countries answer?
-
-
-
-
-
Thanks for your teaching... learning lots from you...
-
kids freak out over tests? teachers can freak out over observations. We have that common bond.
-
. Agree! Ss really like diff groupings. I have also learned how to accept different noise levels during activities.
-
Bottom line, creative 21st century spaces can enhance learning, but innovative 21st Century Ts are critical to success of Ss
-
Love how this started with tech & evolved into examining ideas and needs of teachers & kids. Guess that answers which comes first.
-
I have found my favorite layout might not work the next due to class personality. Always changing!

Touch is a normal and positive part of human interactions. It shouldn't be off limits in the classroom. https://t.co/FPK5eAOP6N
-
Classroom space should invite collaboration, movement, and choice.

I always worry because my class is a bit "noisy." But, when you listen closely there are good convos!
-
-
Definitely a valuable discussion. Thanks for your leadership, Mark!
-
can student seating be utilized for explicit instruction? Are all Ss emotionally/socially ready for Ss centered work?
-
Thank you all for a Wonderful insightful chat!! Be the catalyst for change in your learning environment
