#sdedchat Taylor Hamblin, Pierre, SD, U.S. History teacher as Georgia Morse Middle School and your host for this evening. Looking forward to the conversation :)
#sdedchat A1 PBL is project-based learning. To me, it is hands-on, real-life activities that drive what we want to know & want to learn. As a #CareerTechEd teacher, that is the core of our philosophy!
#sdedchat A1-PBL means giving students projects that allow them to express their individuality and creativity while meeting curriculum standards. Students critically think to solve problems.
#sdedchat a1: PBL means that Ss show their learning in anyway they want, or have a choice in the path of their learning. It is not just showing them an example of what Ss have done in the past!
A1: project based, no right or wrong, collaboration and tons of talking out theories. Mistakes and solutions. Facing challenges to learn how to overcome them and solve them. #sdedchat
#sdedchat I do love students learning the way they want, its a powerful motivator. I do believe past examples are alright, but always letting students deviate from what has been done in the past.

I love when they talk it out and are adamant in their theory, but then find their mistakes or then finally see it another way. Stubborn 8 year olds! 😂 #sdedchat
An important one that many are lacking in. They’re caught up in the thought that they’re always right or someone else will do it for them. It’s a hard concept for them. #sdedchat
A3 #sdedchat It is the "ah-hah!" moment with the practicality of the outcome. When Ss shine and start to talk about how they can use, modify, or tweak at home or work, then #PBL is a success.
I think when you do #PBL or Problem Based the focus should be cross curricular and when you do projects those tend to be in a singular content area. #sdedchat
A2: learning problem solving skills. Acknowledging mistakes and learning from them. Collaboration and social skills. Encouraging creativity and thinking in different ways. #sdedchat
This should be what we do everyday with learners! We focus on the 16 Habits of Mind as a district as we believe those are the soft skills our learners need! #sdedchat
#sdedchat A2-PBL has completely revolutionized my teaching experience. Students are more engaged, creating something that they truly value. They focus on skills, not content in my history classroom. I use @NationalHistory for those who are interested.
#SDedchat A2: We have an awesome PE departmen @CoachRanta@MrJohnsenPE who worked with us to have a hike up a local MTN to study geology. I love when the Ss run to @mrstbauerly to utilize technology in their projects as well!

Creating something they truly value... so important. How often do students create something for us that gets thrown away or forgotten the minute they step out the door?? #sdedchat
A4 #sdedchat#CTE is all about hands-on, skills-based instruction. To incorporate #PBL outcomes, I look for the connection to real-world situations and work backwards with instruction for Ss.
I agree. I do these things with my students daily. I think with PBL, it’s more student centered where they’re receiving and participating in these conversations with their peers instead of just me. #SDedchat
#sdedchat agreed, so many students do not value their work because their is not relevance or pride in it. Give them something real to create, and they will take to it.

My Ss do this with science fair. They go out and find mentors that can help with their projects. @WHOI worked super closely this year with one of my Ss interested in marine biology! #sdedchat
A3: My curriculum is set up to be Activity, Problem, and Project based. STEM content centered on engineering. I think a lot of the projects are still too structured & outdated though #sdedchat

@SkypeClassroom is a great way to incorporate this idea. We’ll start coding projects next week. We’re Skyping with someone that is a game programmer to discuss how learning to code can lead to different professions. #sdedchat

A4: I only have my students for a trimester (12 weeks) & after learning routines and procedures it doesn't seem like enough time to do a lot of projects before I get a new set of kiddos #sdedchat
I wish more teacher planning time and district PD time was spent on planning collaborative projects with purpose rather than talking about things that SHOULD have been an e-mail... #sdedchat

#sdedchat A4-Some teachers at the school have described as a waste of time or not meeting standards enough. Because its nontraditional, its not seen as a valid use of time.

#sdedchat Grading is difficult because everything is so flexible. Some students are extremely uncomfortable with the flexibility. I have had some students ask, "why can we not just read from the book each day?"
A3: math concepts-creating zoos for area/perimeter. STEM-creating projects with limited supplies. Using @Buncee to collaborate. #gra17 and solving problems for the book characters. #sdedchat
Change is painful. Something I've been thinking about after reading the book "Quiet" is that constant group projects are exhausting for introverts #sdedchat
A6 #sdedchat The balance is finding the "teachable moments" with skills-based learning. There does have to be content knowledge. It doesn't necessarily have to be lecture. The key is: there is no right way. There are Many ways to add the content to the project.
a5: I think it should always be a S choice, sometime I have a PBL choice or a more traditional option. It is about learning, not "being good at school: #sdedchat
A5: I don't think balance is the key here I think it is purpose. If content is better served as an activity or quest to gather info- then leave it. PBL isn't for short & quick facts/skills #sdedchat
A5: I feel my balance changes yearly with each group of students. Some groups can spend the majority of their time learning with PBL while others can only handle a sprinkle of it. #sdedchat
Incredibly true. Twitter makes some of this possible. Meeting face to face really is beneficial when it’s something your passionate about. If it’s a forced planning/collaboration, that’s painful. #sdedchat
#sdedchat Love the idea, I think this would be a really powerful tool for a collaboration class :) Imagine three of four classes allowing students to use assignments to help them build a project.
YES! All learners can learn. Sometimes the biggest barrier to student success in learning is the teacher's belief about what they can accomplish.. #sdedchat
Because I’m a #skypeMT, I’m going to say @SkypeClassroom. 😊 so many ways to connect for social studies and science. You can also create collaborations for projects that extend around the country/world. #sdedchat
