Some more 8 inch cylinders attempts today today using 3 pounds of clay. Several succeeded! There is no giving up with this crew! Pushing past boundaries... Inspiring to see! @tishrich@MattCockrellArt@MSD549C#K12ArtChat
Michael. Not my first rodeo with these cowboys and girls. Excited to see everyone again! Always an Artist, but also now in my new role as a Supervisor of Visual & Performing Arts, among other areas.... #k12artchat
Been a minute @MsValentineRMS good to see you again! I shared some of the amazing collaboration art you did with your kids a while back from our 7 Deadly Sins Workshop. Hope you're still rockin' it #k12artchat

Hello everyone out here on #k12artchat My name is David @DRModler I am Associate Professor of Art at Shepherd University in West Virginia, a Journal Fodder Junkie and co-founder of Draw and Play Here Visual Journal Exchange Initiative.
A1: There’s a narrative in our lives and to our work, and each of us has a story. My visual journals are infused as a process vs. product approach to artmaking. Sometimes they inspire larger works of art. Sometimes they're IN the art. Sometimes they ARE the art. #k12artchat
A1 I created and interactive digital notebook for me to insert my thoughts as I journey as a teacher of teachers this year. I have quotes and digital inspirations that I have created. Poems are tucked inside also. #K12ArtChat

Me too @jrnlfddrjunkies an EVERYTHING BOOK...Perfectly Put! For me it should look and feel just like me. Should be that way for Ss too. Although I know that's coming in Q2. #k12artchat
Ss have embraced their sketch journals more this year and always looking for more ways to encourage them to embrace the creative potential in the pages of their own book! A2 #K12ArtChat
#k12artchat I love teaching my 2nd -5th to plan, ideate, and practice ! They are seeing the value of getting ideas out andwork through their ideas! I don’t have pics of mine but I love working through emotions, ideas, etc..
A.2. The visual journal work (and play!) helps me enjoy and determine the media I use for my art pieces. Revisiting my journals brings new ideas and connections. And, the visual journal is a place for me to get lost in art making in the best way. #K12ArtChat
That's the way to go #k12artchat LEAD by example. Stay an artist with them! It's much more rewarding and inspiring for students to explore your #visualjournals as they are contemplating directions to go with theirs.
I certainly believe in that. Copy of my interactive digital notebook that I offered as a model for the teachers I am working with this year. Next step creating a piece of digital #art from my photos and adding #poems. #K12ArtChat
A2: Visual Journaling is how my students process through ideas before each project and warm up their creative thinking for 10 minutes at the beginning of each class. #K12ArtChat
A.3. My students have not seen Eric’s new book yet. However, they have seen the JFJ two other books. Each page offers gems of inspiration #K12ArtChathttps://t.co/mqVXfie4x0
A1- My ‘Visual Journal’ is a little bit ‘wonkier’ than most 🤣 as I often times use reflection of past events & experiences to help mold my own art making #K12ArtChat A beautiful landscape of places I’ve been to often times triggers the memories of those events/ experiences
I agree. Places definitely spark memories. I also used to do a project with my Ss called "Relics of Childhood" which also would spark intense conversations, amazing collaborations with photography, mixed-media and #visualjournaling#K12artchat

A.1. My viz j is part of one process, not separate from my studio practice. What happens in the book many times ends up on the wall, and what starts on the wall finds its way into the book. It is a two-way conversation, a dialogue, a line of inquiry, dynamic and fluid #k12artchat
A1- when I’m consistent with it... and that’s a big “when”, journaling pushes me thru fear of the blank page and gets me to be more adventurous visually #k12artchat
A2- For me, ‘Visual Journaling’ is different for each person. I don’t require my student to journal, but reflecting on their current project is something I discuss with them ‘the next day’, probing them with analyzing questions pertaining to their project #K12ArtChat
A.3. My students have had the honor to have Eric visit them in the ARED studio classroom at Shepherd University. He shared his studio practice, visual journals and perspectives on teaching visual arts. #k12artchat
A2 my Ss are developing themes in their journals. It is the first time I’ve done it this way. It has allowed their thoughts, techniques and ideas to grow. #K12ArtChat
A.4. Small visual journal exchanges with other university and k12 students, Artist Trading Cards, collaborative en Masse style drawings and paintings, Drawing Jams and Zines. #k12artchat
A4- For me, collaborating with ‘core’ teachers Brings More students to love art & it Also helps to ‘Bridge the Gap’, Allowing for those students ‘who just don’t get it’ with their ‘core’ teacher, to Finally ‘make it click’ with Art ‘intertwined’ with that core class #K12ArtChat
A4: This was us creating #collaborationart at August PD with @DRModler rockin' it! #k12artchat How many Supervisors you know get into the "making" with their teachers? Not many I've ever known... It's all about walking the talk and going on that #visualjournaling journey too!
Changing the face of quality PD @msdefinearts one collaboration at a time. Thank you to all Fine Arts, World Language & Media Professionals who ventured into the forest with @drmodler & I and chose the road less traveled by. 💯💪👏🌎🎨🎹🎻🎭🎼🎤🎬✍️📽🥁🖼🎞📷📚🇪🇸🇫🇷🇮🇹🇺🇸
A5: For me, it’s a journey that first began with longtime artist friend @sprouseart We made collaboration paintings. It expanded into my Master’s Thesis on #visualjournaling researching DaVinci, Munch, Eric Fischl, Candy Jernigan and Dan Eldon. #k12artchat
A5: After being in Seattle, for journaling was amazing. Connecting w/ @DRModler doing a Journal swap. I came home & started Swapped with journals with 2 other people. #K12ArtChat
A5- going local with this one:) some amazing artists & moralists in SD who are some of the most open and giving people I’ve met. @IsaiasCrow@GloriaMuriel@montyart wonderful to share their process with my Ss #k12artchat
It becomes a craving! I missed several days of Inktober & and you start to feel guilty. Then you get a creative bug & make for a couple of hours. #K12ArtChat
A5 One year students started to creating what I call cat stairs from paper and linked them together. Had enough to go around the whole school twice. Shared Janine Antoni with them. #k12artchat
@SamuelPeck and I have exchanged journals for over 5 years and have co-installed 7 exhibits featuring exchanged journals from the @drawandplayhere project. #k12artchat
A5- every year I use quilt makers and textile designers to get all our2nds-5ths collaborating on a paper quilt that celebrates he unity and diversitypresent in our school community #k12ArtChat
Think it's important not to feel too guilty. Life happens. When I did my #jfj365challenge, I wasn't able to keep it up everyday and had to catch up. Gotta give yourself permission to have some down time #k12artchat
My campus coordinates with the counselor to promote Rachel's Challenge. In the past we created an artistic post it response wall . It was amazing! #K12ArtChat
A6 I think having artistic accomplices is a good thing. Just making art in the same space as someone else is good. Not necessarily collaborating on a single piece. #k12artchat
A4 my Ss have choice and voice and the freedom to collaborate on anything. Even on individual projects and journals, I observe them sharing ideas. #K12ArtChat
A5- A ‘current’ Collaboration with @Richmondruss will allow His S’s in Oregon & My S’s in Kentucky, with the aide of both of our Schools Tech Guru’s @tishrich & @MLCEsports to compete in a ‘Pottery Throwdown’ where creativity & technology are put to the test #k12artchat Challenge
I am pretty wiped out! All week made cardboard collagraph prints. Then had to go back into it with another medium and make improvements. Really amazing stuff. #K12ArtChat
