Welcome to this special #valentines edition of #caschat. Please introduce yourself, tell us where you are from, your role, and who was your first celebrity crush?
A1 Iโm really lucky to have a talented team of CS teachers to work with, but I think in a lot of secondary schools the CS department consisted of just one person. #caschat is an opportunity to share and reach out to the community ๐
A1. It's nice to share and help others which is amazing. Computing can be really insular so having a group like this to find out new things is great. #caschat
A:1 The best thing for about caschat is all the different ideas everybody has and different software, and how you all implement it in different ways, it was a bit of an opener at first ๐๐ค #caschat
#caschat A1: a) being able to connect with other subject specialists - being in a department of one can be a bit isolating. b) so many great ideas and examples of top practice being shared, it's had a positive impact on my practice for sure
A1 I love and recommend #caschat because of the supportive nature of contributors, the ideas and resources shared. The time given by those who make it happen is inspiring.
A1 - Initially it helped with the isolation I felt as the only one in the dept - but you soon realise the #caschatters are a really friendly bunch who have amazing knowledge and love to share it #caschat

Speaking if which, I accessed your Scratch progression resource via CAS website this morning- a perfect example of support and sharing. Thank You #caschat

A2: Well we really don't do this but tomorrow we are going to use App Inventor to make a simple valentine app, just don't tell my head just yet!!! ๐๐ฅฐ๐๐โบ๏ธ #caschat
A2 - I don't think I've ever done one but I did use Axsieds Monster dating worksheet as part of a cover lesson last week (Our head was covering the lesson and joined in with the pupils and their boolean logic questions) #caschat
#caschat A2: repurposed Count Von Count's Halloween Cookies spreadsheet to be Lyubi's Love Potion. Formulae, referencing, data types, decomposition, operations.
We also take the opportunity to rehammer bits of the DL strand, especially pestering, ratings communities & consent.
A3) Computing has the ability to be so different, you can take any theme and still make a great computing lesson #caschat I also get a kick out of making things work!
#caschat I love the fact our subject never stands still. I really enjoy learning about tech in the news and discussing the consequences of technology on society
The fact that you can equip anyone with basic skills at any level and they always surprise you with how they apply them and the look on their faces when they do. Imagination is the only real limitation #caschat#tem#STEAM A3

A3 that you can literally cover or make ANYTHING! (hopefully including someone applying for my current #JOB at a lovely school with a fully-resourced, award-winning department working alongside outstanding subject specialists and loads of freedom https://t.co/8qmbwKNUBO#caschat
A3 I get to nerd out with like-minded people - teachers & kids.
Running a DnD club the preceded Stranger Things was a highlight
(not technically computing, but guess what department made up 90% of the players!)
#caschat
A3: It has a lot of the things that I like eg...tech, tech, tech and did I say tech, and all the smiles we get in class in this lesson...I once had a dream of floating in a sea of raspberry pi's...Ahhhhhh #caschat
Its in the 101 Computing activities for GCSE computer science - The activity gives a list of things that each monster is looking for and you have to match them up eg teeth > 3, hair = yes that sort of thing #caschat
#caschat A3: how many amazing resources and blogs are out there produced by folks with far more CompSci experience than me - cheers folks, you make me look like I know what I'm doing!
A3: Iโll tell you the qualities I admire in an excellent CS teacher. Creative, research engaged, puts the craft of teaching and pursuit of imparting knowledge before all else and is able to create a really positive classroom where students are not afraid to fail well #caschat ๐

A3. I admire the fact that computing allows you to deliver a topic in many different ways. There is also always more than one way to answer every programming challenge! #caschat
#caschat A4: I'm glad I *didn't* know how much the balance of the curriculum was going to change, I might have bottled out. Since the switch of emphasis from ICT to CompSci I've learned such a lot and had great fun passing it on.
A4: That first I could teach, who would have thought it me teaching. And secondly that it doesn't matter about your upbringing you can teach a subject that you are passionate about and make a difference to others. All hail the ZX80 !! ๐ #caschat
A4: Iโd be pleased to know that solid Computer Science would grow out of the shadows of ICT: the sad cousin poorly mistreated by school leaders and exam boards trying to manipulate results, leaving us saddled with a legacy of being a โcrapโ and โeasyโ subject #caschat
#caschat q3
I admire working with so many amazing educators, industries and students .... just today after a discussion with a student in yr13 they came back with an amazing idea of teaching oop to yr12 .... revolutionary and I'd never thought of that approach!
Start from where their interests already lie. hook them in that way. With more and more connections via #STEM#STEAM#MakerEd this is becoming an obvious strategy, and so much more creative and inclusive #caschat A5
A5. Make it accessible. It's not all grade 9 and exams! It's fun. It's code club. maker space. We have added @microbit_edu into KS3 and i'm hoping its will have an impact on KS4 uptake and with girls! #caschat
A5: give students a quality classroom experience. Built really productive relationships and let them see that you, as their teacher, genuinely love the subject too #caschat ๐

I totally agree and connections on here make me realise Computing may not be the most supported area so far but it has the most committed and lovely people championing the cause #caschat@PennyCater

A5: Show them how much fun it can be and how much relevance it has to other subjects that they may think they are not too good at. And the words Robots, AI and gaming may also help...lol ๐๐๐๐๏ธ๐ค๐พ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐งฉ #caschat
#caschat want to appologise, writing lessons on spreadsheets for year 8 and it's held up my caschatting. I contextualise spreadsheets within algebra and programming practice.
Totally late to #caschat (at a sixth form / uni open evening with kid, asking โdo I need A level maths to do computer science at your university?โ) but what I love most about teaching computing is how much the children enjoy it.
#caschat q4 how much I'd love it - how life changing it would be for many students - how addictive teaching it can be .....!!! Oh and how tough it is to try and get SLT to understand how hard it is to learn and how important!
A5. This could be contentious!
But I'll say it - teaching fewer things, but with more context and in more depth.
We have so much content at GCSE that we miss out on the tangents that we used to let tuem mentally wander down.
