Hello #LearnLAP. Melissa here, 7th Grade Science, from Upstate NY. So excited to get my chat on. @NowakRo and @mr_meighen are gonna bring it for sure!!! Don't have any pics, but this is how I feel most days.
I will transform learning experiences for the benefit of all my students.
I will let them be little, fill their hearts with laughter. Help them grow wings. Nurture their sense of wonder. Inspire them to believe. Love them like there is no tomorrow. #LearnLAP

Q1: The environment you learn in directly impacts your engagement. How do you create a classroom environment that transforms learning for your students? #LearnLAP
Q1 The environment you learn in directly impacts your engagement. How do you create a classroom environment that transforms learning for your students? #LearnLAP
Good evening all! I'm Paul Solarz, 5th grade teacher from Arlington Heights, Illinois! I appreciate @NowakRo & @mr_meighen moderating #LearnLAP tonight!!!
A1: A classroom can't be transformative if Ss don't feel like they are a part of it. Relationships are key. We talk, have fun, & learn from each other. Sharing after independent reading builds community & rapport, for ex. S book rec & talks are powerful! #learnlap
A1. By implementing gamification with @classcraftgame, using flexible seating, and giving the students choices on their learning. I strive to personalize the learning experience of each student. #learnlap
A1. I try to create an inspirational environment. One that promotes choice & making a difference. The room is set up to encourage collaboration, the learning revolves around making an impact on the world. Variety is available to allow for learners to be comfortable. #LearnLAP
A1: Transforming the physical environment in my classroom has simultaneously transformed learning. Students now work through a somewhat organised chaos where they can collaborate and work through content at an individualized pace and order each day. #LearnLAP
A1 Classroom has to be a place where Ss & Ts learn together When that is the framework Ss will #QuestionEverything & take ownership w/you in the CR #LearnLAP
Hi Everyone! I'm Barbara Bray from Oakland, CA - blogger, podcaster, and just love to share what I learn from you @NowakRo & @mr_meighen and all the other awesome educators in #LearnLAP tonight!!!
A1: Today, I used @flipgrid with one class and did stations with another. This was inspired by reading "The Wild Card". I wanted to make learning meaningful, and I saw engagement first hand today. #learnlap
A1 When I learn at home, I am rarely sitting at a chair in a "formal" position. I need noise, flexibility, relaxation. I try to emulate the same choices to students based on their learning needs. Learning is fun...an adventure; not a formal dictated activity. #LearnLAP
Q1 The environment you learn in directly impacts your engagement. How do you create a classroom environment that transforms learning for your students? #LearnLAP
A1: I let the kids completely redo the room right after Christmas break. That took a lot of letting go of perfection, and of control. They did a great job making it their own, and their ownership in the classroom and their learning has skyrocketed! #LearnLAP
A1- Ss are on the move, choosing where to sit, who to work with and what approach to take. Ss help run classroom and share responsiblities. Ownership is key. #learnLAP
Sarah from GA, I teach 6th grade ELA, had to scroll back a while to find a picture that I was in! Most of mine are of one or both of the boys! #learnlap
A1: Your classroom MUST be a safe place to take risks in learning. Positive relationships built around trust and high expectations are the foundation for great learning! #LearnLAP
A1: Ss say the classroom feels like home. Shiplap paper a larger wall, lamps, flexible seating, etc. They LOVE being in the classroom. That is only 1/2 of environment. Other 1/2? Ss are put in houses and truly bond with others around them creating a safe environment. #LearnLAP
Q1 The environment you learn in directly impacts your engagement. How do you create a classroom environment that transforms learning for your students? #LearnLAP
A1: It is all about the relationships. My students tell me they appreciate how relaxed I am and that I give them opportunities to do self-guided learning, but that when I do direct instruction I get excited about it which makes them excited too. #learnlap
Q1 The environment you learn in directly impacts your engagement. How do you create a classroom environment that transforms learning for your students? #LearnLAP
A1: we have connected our two separate schools and classrooms using teleconferencing and other digital tools. This has changed how are two classrooms behave within the physical walls and within the digital world #LearnLAP
A1 I personalize the learning experience by adding manipulative to their lesson, working on specific goals, and the most important- getting to know them as individuals. #LearnLAP
Hi! Danielle Miller, 6th grade math, Chicago, IL. Here’s a pic of me twinning with @Ms_Langenderfer at our district’s first curriculum night, purple pants and all #122edchat#learnlap
I think about how the ss learn best and put myself in their shoes daily. How would they love to learn this unit. The class is ours and everything over time is accessible to them, flexible seating has worked for us #learnlap
Q1 The environment you learn in directly impacts your engagement. How do you create a classroom environment that transforms learning for your students? #LearnLAP
A1: I think this is something I am still learning how to do. I have many socio-emotionally and socio-economically high risk Ss that getting buy-in and engagement is rough some days. Always trying to incorporate #choosekind in all lessons to create a family of Ss #LearnLAP
Q1 The environment you learn in directly impacts your engagement. How do you create a classroom environment that transforms learning for your students? #LearnLAP
A1 I try to make my classroom as home-y as possible. I have materials available for Ss to use whenever they need it, and am starting to use more flexible seating options. I always refer to it as OUR room not MY room. #LearnLAP
A1: I work with educators that want to transform teaching and learning. Best thing is to consider #culture first. How do you build #relationships based on trust? How can you make a safe place for all Ss so they can share their #voice and find their purpose for learning #LearnLAP
Q1 The environment you learn in directly impacts your engagement. How do you create a classroom environment that transforms learning for your students? #LearnLAP
Classroom environment is my jam. I’ve used research to design a gaming, comfortable space for collaboration with flexible seating, lamps, and lots of blues and grays. #LearnLAP
Q1 The environment you learn in directly impacts your engagement. How do you create a classroom environment that transforms learning for your students? #LearnLAP
#learnlap A1: materials snd resources at fingertips , technology hardware readily available, strong menu of collaborative apps and a platform to showcase.
A1: I don't have a classroom anymore but have a building that is lined with positivity. We have #pbis displays and charts around the building that show the great things Ss are doing. For example: "golden spoon" charts in the cafeteria and expectation posters drawn by Ss #LearnLAP
By building a room that students feel safe to wonder and explore. Remove "right" and "wrong" answers. Make room for curiosity and exploration. #LearnLAP
Q1 The environment you learn in directly impacts your engagement. How do you create a classroom environment that transforms learning for your students? #LearnLAP
A1: I have flexible seating options in my classroom & Ss have free choice to get up & find a place that best meets their needs! Additionally, I love doing room transformations that being our learning to life! #LearnLAP
A1: I create a classroom environment that transforms learning for my students by having a wonder table with items that encourage dialogue & inquiry based learning. In my classroom you will see students working in small groups! We are always on a growth mindset journey. #LearnLap
A1 - We work hard on establishing a caring, collaborative community from the first day of school to the last! It's always Priority #1 and we don't take breaks from supporting each other in kind, helpful ways. Social-emotional needs come first! #LearnLAP
A1: I used to build relationships with my students. I never had assigned seats and if students wanted to change seats I’d let them. Can’t learn if you’re not comfortable with your environment. #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP Jerry Toups HS Math Tr from the Houston TX aree. Been teaching my Ss to #AlwaysBeleive since 1990. one of my favorite #Believe selfies so far this year.
A1:learning environment is built with a solid routine, high expectations, an acceptances & appreciation for risk taking. Teacher needs to model this daily.
#LearnLAP
A1: You need to shift student engagement to empowerment. Giving students ownership of the classroom, activities, and feedback are vital. Creating a culture of failure enables students to take risks, learn and grow. Everyone should be learning together. #learnlap@ajjuliani
A1: I greet Ss, am patient when they’re frustrated, & make time to chat with all students throughout a week of workshop. I work to have them know I am here to support them, not just give them work so they can get a grade. Sometimes I’m more successful than other times #LearnLAP
Q1 The environment you learn in directly impacts your engagement. How do you create a classroom environment that transforms learning for your students? #LearnLAP
A1: Transform the school! Every S is pictured in the halls on a leader board (100% of our Ss are leaders), family pictures also on display. Relationships, relationships, relationships! #LearnLAP#PhenomenalFebruary
A1- The best place to start is to involve your Ss in the discussion on how their classroom can be best set up to meet their learning needs. Flexible seating choices, visually stimulating, feels like home or all characteristics that make a learning space special #learnlap
A1: I've seen classrooms where nothing is on the walls and the Ss have a voice in redesigning the environment. It is about them and encouraging #curiosity#inquiry to nudge them to being #Creative#innovative#LearnLap
A1: Create a classroom that is safe, caring, and full of humor! Be personable and SHOW your passion for your subject. I get way too excited about fractions! Ss get excited then too! Ss thrive when they know they can make mistakes, ask questions, and feel respected. #learnlap
Hi all! Late to the party- Sarah, 3rd grade LA and SS OH
A1: make materials accessible to all Ss daily. Empowers Ss to get what they need and problem solve. Also flex seating to learn what works best for them #learnlap
A1: Make sure from day one, the message is sent that it’s “our” classroom rather than “my” classroom. That includes ownership in choice of what happens in there as well as ownership of responsibility for keeping up with the learning environment. #learnlap
Hi all, I’m Paul, a special education ELA teacher. I have a modified class of both 7th and 8th grade students below grade level and I co-teach 7th and 8th grade inclusion. #LearnLAP
Q2 Learning often happens outside the typical four classroom walls. How do you utilize various parts of your school campus to support learning transformation for your students? #LearnLAP
Q2: Learning often happens outside the typical four classroom walls. How do you utilize various parts of your school campus to support learning transformation for your students? #LearnLAP
A2: I like to utilize a lot of the common or collaborative learning spaces around the school to help maximize our learning environment. The library and the hallways provide additional learning areas that extend learning beyond my physical classroom walls. #LearnLAP
A1- I want my students to see themselves reflected in our classroom- I want people to walk in and know who they are and what they're learning #LearnLAP
A1: I let the kids completely redo the room right after Christmas break. That took a lot of letting go of perfection, and of control. They did a great job making it their own, and their ownership in the classroom and their learning has skyrocketed! #LearnLAP
A1: making sure my students feel comfortable and giving choices . We have a family wall of pictures so they are surrounded my familiar faces. #LearnLAP
Q1 The environment you learn in directly impacts your engagement. How do you create a classroom environment that transforms learning for your students? #LearnLAP
A2: I collaborate with @BburgHSLibrary a lot! This year, we're supporting & celebrating S readers through library visits, book displays, & other activities. @MRCinthelibrary has also planned many activities & programs for #BlackHistoryMonth Learning takes many forms! #learnlap
A2 I try to leave the class environment as often as possible. Go learn outside, in the community, in a library, with business partners. Find as many occasions to collaborate with authentic audiences as possible. Use virtual connections. Learning happens everywhere. #LearnLAP
A1: Have the mindset of keeping your classroom relevant and be unexpected but thoughtful. I LOVE to ask myself this question before planning or meeting with my students..."If I was a student in this classroom...would I BEG for ten more minutes??" #learnlap
A2)We have a garden outside of our classroom. We'll actually be starting our garden until in a week, & planting in about 2. The garden makes a SUPERB learning space. #LearnLAP
A1 I have the tiniest classroom on the planet! That said, I try. This year I removed most of the desks, got a futon, some saucer chairs & a cafe table. The Ss like it. I find myself trying to give up control more w/ cozy space as a reminder. #LearnLAP
I had students create flexible seating when I taught! We identified a need in our room and brought in wood and a saw. Ss collaborated and built their own collaboration areas! #learnlap#studentvoice#kidsdeserveit
A2. This is something I could do better with. Sometimes, @lynzhite and I join classes. Sometimes, we go to the theater. Sometimes, we use the library. This needs to happen more often! #learnlap
A1: Every day should be to invite curiosity and encourage activities that challenge Ss. Build a caring, compassionate environment together so everyone feels supported and validated as a learner. #LearnLap
I am always a little hesitant to admit it, but I don't have much in the way of "routine." My Ss never know what I've got going: laptop, book, groups of 4, 2, competition, displays...#learnlap
A2: As a pre-service teacher, I want to do more of this. I used the hallway today for my students to record their videos, and they were excited. I want to show my students the way content can be interdisciplinary and help them form those connections. #learnlap
A2: Our Ss and Ts write on windows in the hallways with expo marker, flexible seating is outside of pods for small group, etc. In my own classroom, everything I would need for a group is on a rolling cart, therefore making any place a good place to sit and learn. #LearnLAP
Q2: Learning often happens outside the typical four classroom walls. How do you utilize various parts of your school campus to support learning transformation for your students? #LearnLAP
A2: we have an amazing courtyard that has gardens, green house and outdoor seating. We try to get out in nice weather and read and write in the wild! #learnlap
A2: in the midst of renovations so not a lot of options but I have big plans lol. I plan to do some reading at the pond in the late spring months. #learnLAP
Q2: Learning often happens outside the typical four classroom walls. How do you utilize various parts of your school campus to support learning transformation for your students? #LearnLAP
A1: Anything displayed must have a purpose, and not just to prettify the classroom. I try to provide flexible spaces for Ss, such as where and how they want to work: on the floor, sitting behind a desk, in a small group. #LearnLAP
Q1 The environment you learn in directly impacts your engagement. How do you create a classroom environment that transforms learning for your students? #LearnLAP
A2: We use the cafetorium for "field trips". A larger open space, different tables, room to move, display things, get physical. We also have "discovery areas" in each wing with tables & the ability to cook & do demonstrations. Anything outside the room is exciting! #LearnLAP
Q2: Learning often happens outside the typical four classroom walls. How do you utilize various parts of your school campus to support learning transformation for your students? #LearnLAP
A1 I teach only in small groups so I look for small touches that connect to Ss interest or extend their understanding in meaning ways. #LearnLAP...simple gloves for a snowy text!
A2 our art teacher asked her students all over the building to sketch, our lead Ag teacher takes students across the street to he hardware store to get practical experience #LearnLAP
A2: Well my school was the African-American school of the area during segregation, so I point students to the mural we have and the plaque to help students make a connection between those times and the desks they sit at today. #learnlap
A2: We extend learning in the hallways and during transition. Just last week we walked in the hallway making snow tracks just like Peter did in The Snowy Day. #LearnLAP
A1: I spent a lot of time this summer creating a classroom atmosphere based on our first novel: Hugo Cabret. I wanted the room to reflect the train station. I also created a reading center and ditched the desks for tables. And my Starbucks bulletin board was a hit. #LearnLAP
A2 With my area it is often difficult to do this. BUT, I try to play in he community, at events, etc.. to engage the students and community beyond the normal "concert" setting #learnlap
A2) I would like to be better at this. I utilize the hallways and the cafeteria, most other areas are FULL. I use the track a ton during geometry. #learnlap
A1: I have observed in both traditional and flexible seating classrooms, and it always amazes me how much more learning takes place when students have that comfortable environment. Flexible seating is something I definitely plan on implementing in my classroom next year #learnlap
A2: My media center has become a makerspace where students build, create, collaborate and do a variety of activities from building computers to coding to robotics. I have students running their own google classrooms as they share resources. Awesome opportunities! #learnlap
A2 - I have to give credit to my T partner @TeachJRayburn on this Q (I teach ELA and she teaches Math - we switch classes 1/2 way thru day, share total 40ish Ss) - she has a garden outside our classroom. Ss grew cucumbers and tomatoes - yum! #LearnLAP
Q2 Learning often happens outside the typical four classroom walls. How do you utilize various parts of your school campus to support learning transformation for your students? #LearnLAP
A2 Take Ss where the learning is impacting them directly The spaces & features of the entire school can and should be utilized...well all except the restroom... #LearnLAP
A2 I will admit that I don't do this often, not a lot of available space. In the spring I try to get use outside, and I have used the auditorium atrium to do quick Sci interactions. #LearnLAP
A2: We go outside whenever possible, use the rest of the school for Scavenger Hunts, partner with other classes for buddy reading, we globally connect with others through blogging& GHO, we go to other schools to collaborate sometimes too! #LearnLAP
A2 Hi #LearnLAP! I sent students on a quest today! I hid some puzzle piece assignments that, when finished, would give clues to unlock a "locked" Google form!
You can do it! Try and think how you can connect what you're discussing in your health class to different areas around the school or community! #LearnLAP
A2- Ss love to go out in the halls, to the LMC, or to our courtyard for learning. I think their favorite "outside the walls" is at 7:00 p.m each night when they know they can chat with me in #Hangouts and play #quizizz games! #learnLAP
It would be a mistake to think of the outdoor space as a place to take a break from learning. We do not let young children outside to let off steam, then bring them back inside for the real learning. Learning is done as much-some would say more-outside as it is inside. #LearnLAP

A1- By allowing my students to have ownership of the room. It is their learning space so they need to have a voice in the environment that they spend so much time in. #LearnLAP
A2: Learning needs to happen all the time. Schools can involve generative curriculum where Ss come up with the questions going on a walk outside, about the garden, in the community. We need to get Ss asking their own questions so they have critical thinking skills. #LearnLap
A2- Getting kids outside to explore nature and encourage innovative thinking. Lunch time is also a great time to connect with students by eating lunch with them and playing with them, these informal conversations can be amazing teaching opportunities #learnlap
A2. We have kids everywhere. Working in small groups in the hall, receiving interventions in the faculty lounge, weight room, gym, libraries, study rooms, maker space room. It is not a quiet stagnant atmosphere.
#LearnLAP
Q2: Learning often happens outside the typical four classroom walls. How do you utilize various parts of your school campus to support learning transformation for your students? #LearnLAP
I have student friendLt seating, pillows, & positive quotes. But most importantly I welcome students with my 😊. Smile like it’s you job, because it kinda is! #LearnLAP
A2: this is harder this year but other parts of the building hold opportunities as does the backyard of the school (ok it’s cold, we won’t be back there for a while but there’s a stream...) #LearnLAP
I’m passionate about teaching my students the power of YET! It is the number one thing that has transformed my practice. ‘YET’ allows students to embrace failing forward in an environment that encourages innovation! #LearnLap
A2: enjoy common areas for students to have flexible learning spaces. We use specific meeting areas, we call them our islands, where specific groups of students meet to work on content specific areas. They support each other as a teacher monitors& steps in when needed.
#LearnLap
A2- our school yard is surrounded by forest- we have community circles in the trees, we take nature walks, we use 'sit spots' the forest to sit quietly and listen to what's around us #LearnLAP
A2: Our school has tons of flexible spaces, and lots of windows! Just changing a students environment can awaken their senses in a new way. And it reminds them that learning happens anytime, anywhere! I would love to have a courtyard of picnic tables! #LearnLAP
A2: When I taught chem I had the Ss do a scavenger hunt using hydrocarbons. The numbers on the chains led them to different classrooms to collect poker chips! It was fun and they went around the entire campus! #LearnLAP
A2: I remembered we had unit about the earth. My partner and I worked w/ the school gardener to find out the diff types of soil. Turns out, he actually composts fallen 🍁, & showed us how diff it looks from other soils. That experience really helped our Ss.
#LearnLAP
A2: With the help of our media specialist, our library is now utilized for multiple events at a time. Tchrs, Ss, community members lrning at the same time #LearnLAP
A2: On the school level, we are trying to help make this easier to make happen. We have a maker space, VR devices for virtual field trips, and working on a #setthestagetoengage room for checking out the materials needed to make learning happen anywhere. #learnlap
I’m passionate about teaching my students the power of YET! It is the number one thing that has transformed my practice. ‘YET’ allows students to embrace failing forward in an environment that encourages innovation! #LearnLap
A1: Flexible learning environments that allow Ss choice so they feel at home. Ss need space to work and to play - to collaborate and to also work quietly on their own. #LearnLap
Q2) we are fortunate to be a campus where each classroom door leads outside, so we spend a lot of time in the “hallways” and in the shade of trees. Helps to extend our tiny classrooms. #LearnLAP
A2: I latchedon to this idea when I heard @burgessdave mention it at a conference a few years ago. Now I send kids trick-or-treating to staff around the building for math problems, on epic journeys across the building, use the gym, etc. Love it! #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP A2 #Believe selfies taken at the Ss activities are a #BigDeal at GRHS. Getting on the #Beleive selfie wall = #epic At the end of the year I cut out the pictures, sign the back, and give them to the kids. #kidsdeserveit
A2 a ss and i are creating a district wide middle school clue game. Students have to solve clues hiddeb around the school to figure out who, where and with what the store the candy. Making it fun so ss don’t realize they are learning. #LearnLAP
A2: Technically, this is still in my "classroom" but I took my @piratelearners on a trip through the Solar System; we reviewed multiple math skills and reading skills, along with, the solar system! It was the ultimate #GlowUp#learnlap
Q2 Learning often happens outside the typical four classroom walls. How do you utilize various parts of your school campus to support learning transformation for your students? #LearnLAP
A1 - engagement, motivation, comfort - it all starts with a strong relationship. Letting Ss know you care, value them, and believe in them. Once that’s established - work on opportunities for collaboration and creativity. #LearnLAP
Q2: Learning often happens outside the typical four classroom walls. How do you utilize various parts of your school campus to support learning transformation for your students? #LearnLAP
A2 We love using the side walks to do chalk in warm weather with math, sight words, and science.
We also love to cook with the cafe or use the field for our daily wonder walk #learnlap
#LearnLAP
A2: @MapleWarriors has an awesome courtyard w/raised gardens. Our green screen travels for “pop up” videos around the school. We have an old stage where fine dining occurs during lunch. This summer we are getting renovations! So excited for this!! #LearnLAP#PhenomenalFebruary
TaleBlazer is an Augmented Reality app. If you have time and some coding skill you could make a Pokemon GO style quest. Or make the students make one! #learnlaphttps://t.co/IQGjh3BAlz
If we want our students to take risks we must jump out of our comfort zones and fail forward ourselves. This is what heroes look like to kids. This is what all teachers must do! I happily fail in front of kids because this builds the best relationships! #LearnLap
@MapleWarriors has gone beyond the 4 walls with leadership hour and learning about the community they live in. Identifying needs and taking action. #LearnLAP
A3: The biggest change I've made to empower student voice is implementing @Flipgrid for specific assignments. You'll hear from every student every time! Check out this compilation from when students talked about writing for the @ncte National Day on Writing! #LearnLAP
A3: Classroom discussions empower S voice. I take a step back and let Ss lead the conversation as much as possible. The amount of choice they have in my classroom is also empowering. I also elicit S feedback & adjust assignments, classroom enviro, & curriculum for ex #learnlap
A3. I try to give as much choice as possible to students. I want them to be learning leaders. Let them choose the way they want to demonstrate learning. Let them choose the tools needed to accomplish tasks. Talk with them. Find out their needs, their passions. #LearnLAP
A2: Life happens anywhere anytime. Why does learning have to be inside a building -- in school? Let's think of any place as an opportunity to learn. Think even "Place-based" learning or even in the halls. Open your doors. Go outside. So much to see and learn. #LearnLAP
A2: This is an area I need to improve upon. I’ve used the hallway for gallery walls, but that’s about it. I am hoping to run a field trip in May, but that is s work in progress. #LearnLAP
I agree Crystal. Greeting the kids at the door is vital and says They Matter! Simple yet huge impact! And smile, yes it is monday and mondays are awesome! #learnlap
I have student friendLt seating, pillows, & positive quotes. But most importantly I welcome students with my 😊. Smile like it’s you job, because it kinda is! #LearnLAP
#learnlap A2: video conferencing, both live and screencast tutorials. Students want video. It transforms the environment and lesson in both creation and reception. Experts for collaboration.
A2: We encourage the students to walk around the campus with iPad cameras and using Apple tools like #clips, Encourage them to notice and apply things to their every day learning. #LearnLAP
You can connect others around the globe. We have brought childrens authors to our classes so that students may hear from them and question them directly! #learnlap
A3: Ss know they can be open and transparent w/ feedback to my partner T and I. We are always taking risks & experimenting w/ curriculum, but sometimes need to be reminded less is sometimes more. Ss are experts at giving us their opinion on what's working vs what's not. #LearnLAP
A2: we are lucky enough to have life skills areas with full kitchens. Making food is a great engagement tool! We also have long hallways, great for sensory integration activities. I might even race a student down the hall from time to time ☺️ shhhh #WalkingFeet#LearnLAP
A3 real, meaningful choice is tough. I try to give lots of options in topic and product. In the end I want them creating but in a fashion the fits their interest and strengths. #LearnLAP
Love it! I’m picturing walking through Google headquarters in Cambridge - there are little collaboration spaces with couches and white boards all over! Foster creativity and learning where/when it happens! #LearnLAP
You are so lucky to have windows. They help create an open spirit to learning. It encourages bringing the outside in! Hope everyone uses it to inspire. #LearnLAP
A3: I was tired of just doing worksheets and decided to change the way I teach at 9: 30 pm last night. I was reading "The Wild Card" and knew in my heart that what I was doing was not optimal. I used @flipgrid, and it helped my Ss find their voice. #learnlap
A3: Have students LEAD. Literally. I have my students lead conferences, data meetings (within the classroom), teach mini-lessons, and have them be a part of the traditional "teacher" planning. Ask your students.."How and WHAT do you want to learn?" #learnlap
A3: Our morning meetings are when we greet one another & also when we problem-solve- we brainstorm ideas/solutions for any ongoing issues; I encourage debate/argument/questioning- #LearnLAP
A3: Make sure they know their voice is always heard and give them MANY opportunities to use it. They know I listen. They know they are in charge of their learning! #LearnLap
A3 I always try to have multiple paths for voice. Some Ss engage in discussion readily and others prefer one-on-one conversation. Some will share ideas freely through @flipgrid, but turn silent when in front of a group. Some write. Some speak. Some create. #learnlap
A3: Choice is the #1 way to have their voices be heard. We are currently planning a health fair where they will present on topics of their choice w/adults in the health field. We also share during morning meetings, & journal. Having students lead opens them up. #LearnLAP
A2 excited to say the @RockwallEdFound approved a grant for us to build an outdoor THEATRE on our grounds. Plans are drawn, submitted and approved and when weather regulates, a theatre with risers will be an outdoor learning space !! #LearnLAP
A2: We utilize our entire campus for learning!!! I love getting my Ss outside & look for opportunities to take learning to a new level!! Ex: When teaching force & motion... we play Kickball! #LearnLAP
A3: As Principal I have advisory committees that I meet with biweekly. I have a student right now leading a book study on Managing Teenage Stress. We are using @Flipgrid to share ideas and resources. Some of my teachers are also using #geniushour. Find your passion #learnlap
A3: We do a lot of conversation in class. I have a @goPEEQ that I use to help facilitate class discussions. I ask them questions and make them feel like they are active participants in learning. Because they are!! #learnlap
A3: S voice and choice through PBIS menus, Leadership Hour, Video announcements. We just started a 2nd monthly kindness challenge b/c Ss asked for it!❤️ #LearnLAP#PhenomenalFebruary
A2- Ss have opportunities to be leaders in our classroom. They take care of jobs when they see they need to be done! "Give Me 5" is a great tool- even my shyest child (with Asperger's) is using it now! #learnLAP
I introduced @miss_haigh to Twitter in December. Love that she is so passionate and is taking time out of her day to join in on the conversation. How inspiring! #learnlap
A3: Class Meetings, Responsibility Partners, lunch with table groups, 2 way journals, collaborative planning with S, notes, kids just gave me a report card with Quality Boosters:P #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP A3: the project team will eventually have a lead, a structural engineer, a creative visionary, and a technical production group. The students will do so by nature...if that fails train them.
A3- I try to model respect and appreciation for everyone’s thoughts and opinions so that students recreate that environment in the classroom. #LearnLAP
A3) it starts with culture and how you build that in your classroom students need to know you care before they are willing to learn and try something new #LearnLAP
A3: In our room the kiddos have a voice, especially when discussing behavior. They have choices on how to react based on the level of problem, and the best is they voice their choice! #LearnLAP#Iwillhaveagreenreaction
A3 Ask them what they would like to do! My kiddos were shocked today when I changed the tables around and gave them freedom to choose their place to work. They need to learn to be advocates for their learning #LearnLAP
A3 I don't let them get comfortable being quiet & on the sidelines I pull Ss into the learning fray They see how we learn together & that its a safe environment to learn in #LearnLAP
I'm trying to get rid of the free2fail term and switch it to #free2succeed ! Free to Fail misses the important idea that one must get feedback and iterate until success! #LearnLAP
A2: Our Ss frequently work in the hallways. They sit on the floor or at small table in groups. Today, a group of 1st graders had clipboards in hand as they looked for and wrote 100 words in the halls to celebrate 100th day. #LearnLap
A3: Using flexible groupings really helps as it engages Ss w/ peers they haven’t worked with yet. I try & visit each group to listen to ideas. Shy Ss tend to engage more in smaller groups. #LearnLAP
A3 - Students have the power to announce "Give Me Five" throughout our day (and are expected to use it regularly) to direct the class, transition us, give reminders, make suggestions, etc. Student voice is definitely the dominant voice heard in our classroom! #LearnLAP
A3- I have a strict open door policy and I meet with kids daily. I also have a principals advisory committee where my Ss go out and bring me Ss concerns #learnlap
A3: I am lucky to work with schools all over. I've seen schools where Ts get to know each child and build a relationship. The conversations are all about them. Then when the Ss feel safe, they want to share and take risks. We need to listen more, talk less. #LearnLap
A3: Ensure that the type of environment we create says to Ss that their voice is valued and heard. A silent classroom with no opportunity for collaboration or choice will never empower Ss. #learnlap
A3: Ss picked #pbis menu items, picked areas of interest for leadership hour, and have more of a voice in the classroom as we explore #kagan cooperative learning and math number talks. #learnlap
A3: student led groups for research/writing projects and lit circles. It’s hard to let 2nd graders take control but they’re learning and doing a good job #LearnLAP
A2: I keep in contact with my students through REMIND. I try to make their learning space as comforting as possible. I play music and diffuse essential oils. I write a weekly motivating quote, make eye contact with them and ask them about their weekend or day. #learnLAP
A3 I tell them they matter & show them this by listening to them & bringing them into lessons.
If I see something one of them loves I take mental notes and bring it in. They notice this over time and feel heard/seen
We all want to be seen #learnlap
A3: I do a lot of “casual conversation” so my students feel comfortable discussing. We share at tables before sharing our. My parapeofessional and I alternate joining groups. When they write, we write. When they share, we share. #learnlap
Q2: We have an incredible outdoor learning commons that our gr 2 and 3 students created. They hand picked butterfly 🦋 plants together! It’s a phenomenal place for dialogue & inclusion for all. Kids enjoy the bees & butterflies that visit & engage in rich discussion! #LearnLap
A3: I facilitate an unofficial student group called #CTkindness which is just there to help bring more positivity to the school. Student bring me ideas, and I help them achieve their goals. It’s a great thing!! #LearnLAP
A3: Noise is something I struggle with. I love reading that learning involves Ss being noisy. I feel like I have a hard time with it being loud, but I have to realize that learning is happening more in those moments than in isolation. #learnlap

Q4 To solve problems, we need to tap into our creative genius. How have you encouraged creativity and student choice in classroom lessons or assessments? #LearnLAP
Q4: To solve problems, we need to tap into our creative genius. How have you encouraged creativity and student choice in classroom lessons or assessments? #LearnLAP
A3: sometimes you have to let them get "off topic". As important as the LP/standard is, some days Ss need to get things off their chest. I try to allow wiggle room in my small group LPs for off topic chat to build relationships/voice #LearnLAP@Flipgrid also a good tool 4 this
Right! If we want kids to love school we have to show them we also love school. Modeling we love to learn and food is such an easy way to do it #learnlap
The only time I expect silence is when 1 person, T or S, is talking to whole group I want them talking, conversing, arguing as much as possible #LearnLAP
A4: Most recently, @klyndeBHS & I let S groups choose a scene from Dr Faustus to perform. They had complete control over set, props, sound effects, blocking, & delivery. The results so far have been creative, energetic, & often funny! Will do w another class & Macbeth! #learnlap

A4: In addition to providing options throughout almost any assignment, my favorite way to encourage student choice is through our autobiography assignment in which students select the topics and write narratives about their own lives. We eventually compile into a book. #LearnLAP
A2b: We also have a courtyard that is underutilized! 4th graders planted their own lettuce and herbs last year and collected data as they grew. Sometimes, use if for lunch chats with the principal. We're talking about adding a painted rock garden. #learnlap
Exactly! If students know that you are there for them, that you genuinely care about them and what they have to say, they will open up. Some will come to you more than others, but building relationships matters so much! #learnlap
A3: We used to have a morning advisement period once a wk. I usually took the scripts and put my own spin on things. The open dialogue helped my Ss feel that at least 1 person really cared. They eventually got courage to speak out on other things at school. #LearnLAP
A3: Starfish Club students do weekly announcements on flipgrid that go out to the whole school, sharing weekly starfish challenges. Other teachers do the same for sports & other extra-curriculars! This is a great leadership opportunity to help students shine! #LearnLap

A4 I have been encouraging my Ss to pick their own current events articles in Newsela. The Ss take turns choosing topics that are important to them. #LearnLAP
A4: choice reading and daily independent reading time at the HS level is already changing my students as readers! These are the same novels that they separately analyze rather than dragging everyone through class novels all the time #LearnLAP
Q4: To solve problems, we need to tap into our creative genius. How have you encouraged creativity and student choice in classroom lessons or assessments? #LearnLAP
