#G2great Margaret from S. LA. where it's hot and birds sing all day long. My tweets for the next hour joining in a discussion of amazing @SaraKAhmed's new book Being the Change.
Roman from Ontario, Canada. HS Teacher/Student Success Leader/Agent of Transformation. Happy to be with #G2Great tonight! Can’t wait to learn with @SaraKAhmed
Sara I hope that you’re watching the people flash on the #G2Great screen. That a great big twitter style love for you AND your amazing book ❤️ #G2Great@SaraKAhmed@HeinemannPub
#g2great Lisa from Minneapolis. I devoured Sara's book and just facilitated a staff meeting (100 people) at my middle school around the principles of the book! I'm floating!
Hey #G2Great folks! Emily here, Instructional Coach in North Carolina, USA, and so excited to be here... reading Being the Change now by @SaraKAhmed in a book study and it’s amAZing!
those of you who take the time on a Thursday night to have a conversation about this beautiful work we are blessed to do are a testament to the amazing Ts who put kids AND social comprehension in their name FIRST #G2Great@SaraKAhmed@HeinemannPub
A1 The first step is to read Sara’s beautiful from the heart book. It brought the idea of BEING the change to life is such a personal way from the first page to the last. #G2Great
A1: Work alongside Ss to help them construct their own identities, provide safe spaces where Ss can facilitate conversations that build understanding, equity & justice while deconstructing systems of power. #G2Great#BeingTheChange
#g2great A1: Recently Ss stood up to our local school board against a newly proposed backpack policy. They turned every yes vote to no. The power our Ss have! I want to celebrate their voices & tell my younger Ss they can be heard. https://t.co/5wKposTYBv
Sara I hope that you’re watching the people flash on the #G2Great screen. That a great big twitter style love for you AND your amazing book ❤️ #G2Great@SaraKAhmed@HeinemannPub
A1: Change begins with active listening. We must listen to understand others’ perspectives and to identify our own biases. Teaching our students how to listen to one another is an essential first step. #G2great
A1: It starts with being open-minded to change and seeking growth for ourselves and our students. It’s easy to write, but a lot harder in practice! #G2great
A1: Work alongside Ss to help them construct their own identities, provide safe spaces where Ss can facilitate conversations that build understanding, equity & justice while deconstructing systems of power. #G2Great#BeingTheChange
#g2great A1: I strive each day to make sure each of my students feels equally important in our learning community; that all of their voices are honored.
A1- Help Ss to find their voice, build self-confidence and self-concept, push higher and cultivate a passion for learning. That is game-changing work. #g2great
A1: This week for me has been a bit of a heavy reflection period. I think teachers taking the time to reflect on what is working and what isn't is that first step in being the change. We need to recognize it is needed. And not be so proud that we ignore it. #G2great
A1 I need to say we need to be the change for our kids! Our kids deserve the best, deserve relationships, deserve to be cared about. We need a system and educators who will always put them first, above all else (programs, pressures, etc.) #g2great
A1: Create a safe space for students to explore their own identities and learn about the identities of others. Help figure out our own biases, and be honest with students about them as a model for them to do the same. #G2Great
A1: build a classroom community that allows Ss to feel comfortable being themselves. Encourage them to use their voices in a positive way. Model that by using yours. #G2Great
A1: We can help encourage Ss to be more socially aware, and we can help Ts feel more comfortable embracing the growth that could come from them ... like how to allow for that extra long awkward pause #G2Great
A1- Get to know our students on a personal level. Who are they? What do they like to do? Not just what was their end of grade test score last year. #G2Great
A1: In addition to creating safe classrooms, we have to be willing to take on the systemic inequities outside of our classrooms that create inequality #g2great
A1 Change begins within each of us. I know that my responsible is to be the best human I can possibly be and I believe that kind caring for others is my #1 goal. #G2Great
A1- Help Ss to find their voice, build self-confidence and self-concept, push higher and cultivate a passion for learning. That is game-changing work. #g2great
Beautiful message Mark. We can’t expect (or ask) kids to do this important work if we aren’t willing to do it FOR and ALONGSIDE them! @SaraKAhmed@HeinemannPub#G2Great
#g2great I think about the teachers who made a difference in my life and try to honor them in my own work. We never know when we’ll be “that teacher” for a student.
A1 Providing Ss a space and consistency to develop relationships with peers and teachers. Allowing Ss the time to talk to each other and learn from and about each other. #g2great
A1- Encourage students to have conversations even if it makes us feel awkward. Allowing a safe space to think things through and talk things through. #G2Great
Well said, Brent! In the fast paced life of education, it is so hard to take the needed time to reflect in order to hone in the work and construct a path toward justice, equity and such. #G2Great#BeingTheChange
A1 My toughest challenge for myself is to work at identifying my own personal biases. When you enjoy privilege, it's hard to see some of the ways the system/culture is failing others. I want to be open to what I need to do for equity and equality. #g2great
Yes I couldn't agree more. We must being to recognize our own biases and to avoid using a deficit lens as we perceive our students, their families, cultures, and ways of being. Once we do this we are better able to help our students recognize their biases & assumptions. #G2Great
A1 Making sure that classroom meetings are safe spaces for students to talk about issuesand feelings that impact their lives. And knowing that discomfort is part of the learning - one of the most powerful parts. #G2Great#BeingtheChange
A1 I work with privileged kids so my goals are to bring to light how "others" live. It's been an ongoing goal as I teach through #inquiry & focus on action & advocacy. The concept of "other" runs deep. It's our obligation to teach & reach all students. #G2Great#BeingTheChange
A1: Creating an environment for Ss to understand themselves & others through reading, writing, listening w/ a resources that ALL students can see themselves in; supporting Ts in making that happen #g2great
A1: My hope is the one thing Edus do with #BeingtheChange is do the work on your own, with PLN'S and PLC'S, book clubs, family....it is necessary to feel what we are asking students to try. #G2Great#BeingtheChange
A1: Hold yourself to high standards, be there for students - everyday, act as a leader no matter your role, share your own learning - then - others will follow. That is BEING the CHANGE. #G2Great
A1 My toughest challenge for myself is to work at identifying my own personal biases. When you enjoy privilege, it's hard to see some of the ways the system/culture is failing others. I want to be open to what I need to do for equity and equality. #g2great
A1 Being the change shouldn’t be something we do on lonely solitary path. When we are willing to join forces with others, we raise our CHANGE POWER exponentially! #G2Great

Action.
Taking mindful, thoughtful, purpose-driven action, in all the realms of our influence, both professionally and personally, to advocate for and support the children & youth in our lives, so they may grow up knowing their immense and inherent value in our world. #g2great
Well #G2great I will try 2 keep up with the phone from the gym. I hate missing the chats but building some great relationships with students is the most important part, plus I get to lift heavy things haha. I know @DrMaryHoward will have that wakelet ready for me to be inspired.
I'm gathering colleagues now for an informal #EduSummerCamp and plan to introduce the lessons form #BeingTheChange so we can get a feel for what we will ask kids to do (and be). #G2Great
A1 I'm challenged to call out the microaggressions that exist in our learning communities. It's extremely uncomfortable and even sometimes painful, but it has to be done (gracefully, but assertively). #G2Great
A1: Hold yourself to high standards, be there for students - everyday, act as a leader no matter your role, share your own learning - then - others will follow. That is BEING the CHANGE. #G2Great
A2. involve Ss, families and community in school. Check for mirrors & windows in texts/content. Check for Voices. Whose voice is heard? Also Choice. Who gets to choose?
#g2great
A1 Making sure that classroom meetings are safe spaces for students to talk about issuesand feelings that impact their lives. And knowing that discomfort is part of the learning - one of the most powerful parts. #G2Great#BeingtheChange
A1: Had a convo with a mentee this morning. Sometimes our best laid plans/units go awry. When they do ask yourself, “What could I have done differently?” Teachers who look to be responsive to students learning needs wonder what they can do first to create change. #g2great
A1 I'm challenged to call out the microaggressions that exist in our learning communities. It's extremely uncomfortable and even sometimes painful, but it has to be done (gracefully, but assertively). #G2Great
A1: #g2great Creating “brave spaces” where my students can speak without offending, ask questions, and learn from each other. Teaching how to have debates and conversations that are respectful of one another.
A2 We could start by listening more than we talk – I mean really listening at the core. Kids are always talking whether in words, actions, demeanor writing – ALWAYS! #G2Great
#G2great A2: We are bloggers in Mrs. Simon's Sea. Blogging gives them choice and voice and honors who they are. Check out Erin's reverso poem abt gender identity. https://t.co/yhfwjwsSI5
Yes without a foundation grounded in relationships, then everything we do will forever reside in quicksand! Sara’s books is ALL about positive relationships and respect for others! @SaraKAhmed@HeinemannPub#G2Great
Action.
Taking mindful, thoughtful, purpose-driven action, in all the realms of our influence, both professionally and personally, to advocate for and support the children & youth in our lives, so they may grow up knowing their immense and inherent value in our world. #g2great
A1 Being the change means we have to be able to have couragous conversations and have empathy, and be a great listener. Model that for our Ts and Ss #g2great
A2 I start by truly knowing my students and creating authentic connections with them. They all know that they are important and are essential to the learning culture in my classes. #G2great
Action.
Taking mindful, thoughtful, purpose-driven action, in all the realms of our influence, both professionally and personally, to advocate for and support the children & youth in our lives, so they may grow up knowing their immense and inherent value in our world. #g2great
A2: we honor students’ identities by allowing them to use home language, to express who they are, and proving them with books that mirrors and honors their cultural identity
#g2great
A2 To honor identities, we need to know them. We need to be authentic, take the time & build our relationships. In my ELA class, that means having books supporting diversity, identities, cultures. In my dialogue and examples, I need to be inclusive, teach/lead w/ heart #g2great
A2- I try to incorporate things they like in their learning choices. Morning meetings give students time to get to know each other and have open conversations. #classroombookaday and #bookheadheart have also given my Ss an opportunity to learn more about each other. #G2Great
#g2great A2: I’ve been thinking a lot about identities lately; about how students see themselves and the world. I find myself doing small things, like using gender inclusive language (not “boys and girls…”) but I have SO much more work to do.
A1. "Being the change" as teachers—and as responsible human beings—means being constantly self-reflective and humble. Thinking "We and Us" v. "I and Me." #G2Great
That’s what I love most about teaching Penny… even after all these years, there’s ALWAYS something more to learn. And I am a most willing student!! @SaraKAhmed@HeinemannPub#G2Great
A1: In addition to teaching students how to listen to each other, helping them understand the power of words, considering “would I want someone to do/say this to me?” If the answer is no, then don’t do it!#G2Great
A2: Books are a way to honor Ss identities. We want to look at our classroom libraries and the read alouds we choose. Can we expand our choices to make sure our Ss see themselves in books? #G2great
Listening, sharing other people's stories, inviting students to explore and share other people's stories. Recognizing and naming that they are more than a single story. It is uncomfortable, but necessary work. #G2Great#BeingtheChange
#g2great I was just having this convo with my principal during my EOY reflection meeting. My constant need to learn new things is what keeps me in this profession.

A2: Honor all voices by providing Ss with choice. Let students share what makes them unique and celebrate it! Include texts that representative voices, especially those often ignored, in your classroom. #G2Great
This needs to be shouted from the rooftops! Let them use their mother tongue language in school. That IS their identity you are stripping away if you don't. #G2Great
A2: we honor students’ identities by allowing them to use home language, to express who they are, and proving them with books that mirrors and honors their cultural identity
#g2great
A2 I have given myself a challenge to get every student during the semester to teach me one of their passions. If I want them to be brave and learn, I will model the same and build those connections. Teach with heart...it is much needed. #g2great
A2 One of the many powerful aspects of Sara’s Be The Change is that we get to listen in on the many ways that she makes kids feel visible. I felt honored to read as this unfolded. #G2Great
A2: Individual student personalities and perspectives need to be represented => provide them with choice in assessment, texts, and the ways in which they express their learning=> leverage edtech to amplify student voice! #g2great
#G2great Fran, I seem to recall that the two of us have had many “online” laughs for needing duct tape for ourselves. In fact, my bff and I as kids put tape over our mouths once at school in sixth grade bc we couldn’t stop talking! 😂Not much has changed.

A1 - @SaraKAhmed tells us to start by looking into ourselves & then looking for connections to others. That genuine quest to understand & connect seems like a great place to start, & doing so with open hearts & minds seems like a good idea:). @HeinemannPub@DrMaryHoward#G2Great
A1: Reading Just Mercy with teachers will be an amazing summer PD opportunity to consider systemic issues of injustice. #G2Great if you haven’t joined yet, do!

We have to model courage for students and for our colleagues. We just can’t sidestep the conversations that have the greatest potential to lift us ALL up to new heights of amazing! @SaraKAhmed@HeinemannPub#G2Great
A1 Being the change means we have to be able to have couragous conversations and have empathy, and be a great listener. Model that for our Ts and Ss #g2great
A2 Having books in the classroom that are representative of all students is important. Getting to know all of our students - not just academically is so important. That's the way to build authentic relationships, that's how we honor them and make them feel visible #g2great
Listening, sharing other people's stories, inviting students to explore and share other people's stories. Recognizing and naming that they are more than a single story. It is uncomfortable, but necessary work. #G2Great#BeingtheChange
A2 I listen to them and get to know them and individuals. We make the classroom ours, not mine. Also giving their voice power by having discussions and allowing them to make suggestions about things we will learn or problems we will solve #G2Great
A2: Getting to know each individual child and where their passions lie. Knowing what makes them happy, what makes them sad, what makes them mad, and what makes them who they are. #g2great
This really resonates with me. I am trying to get better at this personally especially post-election when we are so divided. It’s not always easy but I am trying to listen to the other perspective.I think these are important skills for our kids to learn too. #G2Great
A2:Slow down at the start to truly get to know them. Employ lots of open ended experiences so each individuals uniqueness shines bright. Honor it. KIDWATCHING!! #g2great
A2: We have to know our students. What they like, dislike, do well, and struggle with.We need to know their families and values and let them know these things are important.Keep these things in mind when buying books, planning curriculum, and in our day to day chats #G2Great
A2 We could start by listening more than we talk – I mean really listening at the core. Kids are always talking whether in words, actions, demeanor writing – ALWAYS! #G2Great
A2: For me it starts by honoring students creative voices in poetry. Soon we begin to respect each other’s vulnerability. Also be sure the books in your classroom library honor the diversity in your classroom. Seek multicultural poetry to build empathy. #G2great
A2: A diverse selection of texts is critical for all students to feel valued. I am constantly reevaluating to make sure I am being representative as possible #g2great
A2: I have to know people (Ss & Ts) and they have to feel I know, understand and respect them. That I value them, their perspective, and what they contribute to our community. #g2great
Q2: create systems which build in opportunities for kids to make decisions about what we need to explore/ discuss/ troubleshoot. Morning mtg topics, sharing their news, wonder walls, parking lots etc to address issues that matter to them #G2great
A2 One of the many powerful aspects of Sara’s Be The Change is that we get to listen in on the many ways that she makes kids feel visible. I felt honored to read as this unfolded. #G2Great
Yes! We need to closely examine the texts we use in our lessons and the makeup of our libraries to make sure they offer those windows, mirrors, and sliding doors for our students. #G2Great
A2 By getting to know each and every one. Acknowledging their strengths and weaknesses, their passions and struggles And knowing that for some of our hardest kids their is a reason for their behavior. Our job is to find the reason and help them grow! #BeingTheChange#g2great
A2: I have kids sign up to share their outside interests, hobbies, things they create/make, pets, families once a month. They also share their weekend news. I also try to create lessons around things they are interested in. I LISTEN! #G2Great
A2: Honor all voices by providing Ss with choice. Let students share what makes them unique and celebrate it! Include texts that representative voices, especially those often ignored, in your classroom. #G2Great
A2: I try to give them room to exercise creativity. Today I realized not all want to. I need to respect that as well. Some are not there yet as learners. It is my job to go to them when they need it not pull them ahead when I think they do. #g2great
A2: This is page 1 of author Anh Do’s “WEIRDO” This is how many kids feel on day 1 when that attendance roster comes out.
We need to give great care to names. #G2Great
A2 The 1st step to honor students’ identities is not to have any preconceptions that almost always blind us to those identities. We must celebrate all THEY have to teach us. #G2Great
Yes! We need to closely examine the texts we use in our lessons and the makeup of our libraries to make sure they offer those windows, mirrors, and sliding doors for our students. #G2Great
Yes Seth, change ALWAYS begins when we look in the proverbial mirror and truly ponder if we are doing all we can to make the world a better place. Either we do. Or we don’t. Either way, it’s a CHOICE so hopefully we make the brave one! @SaraKAhmed@HeinemannPub#G2Great
A1 - @SaraKAhmed tells us to start by looking into ourselves & then looking for connections to others. That genuine quest to understand & connect seems like a great place to start, & doing so with open hearts & minds seems like a good idea:). @HeinemannPub@DrMaryHoward#G2Great
Agreed! We also honor them by trying to learn theirs to be clumsy and to practice what we hope to see - INTELLECTUAL RISK #G2GREAT this CARE AS Nel Noddings would implore us to do. #G2Great
A2 A new book that will honor voices and identities that are often lacking is Odd One Out by @getnicced We need to make sure that students have books that talk to them. They need to feel valued. A must buy in Oct 2018. #g2great
A2: yes, listening— and creating classrooms where students believe they will be heard. Mine shopped for books to expand our gender identity section of our library this year. #G2Great
A2: Creating a space where identity building is constant throughout everything we do..the conversations, the reflections, the thinking...the listening...the relationship building...the questioning..the curiosity...the mirrors & windows #G2Great#BeingTheChange
A2 Happily I teach ancient civilizations ... talking about ourselves and our own cultures is just what we do to connect 'new to known'. Pretending we aren't different maintains walls 'old folks' built, but experiencing our differences builds understanding #G2Great#BeingTheChange
a2 I love community circles with a question of the day. Those are scheduled. Everyday. But, we also need to be able to listen when students are ready to speak. Scheduled time and be flexible. #g2great
A2. As Ts, we need to be mindful not just of how our Ss' identities are represented, but also pay attention to the silences in our words, books, mentor texts. Ss know they are valued or not valued not just by the books on our shelves, but the silences between them. #G2Great
A2 When I teach second grade all of gr. 2 has an ancestor night where parents come and we honor our unique backgrounds. It is wonderful bc our school has people from all over the world who attend. And they bring food unique to their culture that nt. ❤️ #g2great
A2: #g2great I know that it sounds silly, but i feel that when you allow students to have a voice and you acknowledge their response/story, they know they are heard. I always listen without rushing or interrupting them. When they are done, i ensure to respond.
I truly love this. I have this on posters all over my room and live this. Getting to know and be confident in their own truth is authentic Power! #G2great
Action.
Taking mindful, thoughtful, purpose-driven action, in all the realms of our influence, both professionally and personally, to advocate for and support the children & youth in our lives, so they may grow up knowing their immense and inherent value in our world. #g2great
Yes and we even learn when the lessons are hard don’t we Yvette - in fact maybe those are the most important lessons of all! @SaraKAhmed@HeinemannPub#G2Great
I send home 2 surveys in the back to school packet- one for Ss and one for parents to tell me about their child. It helps me to get a picture of each child before we ever start. #G2Great
Absolutely. Beginning with identity work is the foundation to cultivating a classroom community and fostering an inclusive learning environment. I’ve started using student information sheets on the first day where Ss can share info privately which has been eye opening. #G2Great
By hearing what kids have to say & not say. By recognizing kids have the right to define who they are, reveal their layered ids in their own time, share & center & communicate what they want known to the world & how they want it known & to whom
Always, follow their lead
#G2great
A3. Space and time to gather thoughts, check in with family/friends, community. NOT a rush to do TODAY only. Ask Ss - respond w/ voice or writing? Don't force own preferred response mode.
Respect.
#g2Great#BeingtheChange
At the same time, we need to eliminate labels and generalizing students into groups. We need to honor who they are as a person. Love your answer @DrMaryHoward#g2great
A2: writing notebooks and free writing in response to poetry opens ways for students to tell me —and each other—their stories. Their identities. Their passions. #G2Great

A2 Being intentional (not a chore, a delight) to get to know students lives outside school. @SaraKAhmed says it so well--keep a running list of 10 things Ss tell you about themselves. Not your assumptions, but the pieces of themselves they trust you with. #G2Great
A1: being aware of our own biases and how they affect the work we do, and then working to not let those biases negatively affect our students. #G2Great
A2: I think it is also important to teach ss to value and validate one another's voices, even when they don't agree or are uncomfortable with the topic. Validation for being heard by peers is so important #G2Great
A2. In my class we value each child with giving them each a job for the day. When one of them is out, it shows the importance they play in our class community #litbankstreet#g2great
A2: I would add not only making sure our libraries are diverse but also the books we read aloud, that we “buzz” and recommend, that we are ourselves read... #G2great
A3 It starts by keeping OUR mouth closed so we can listen without making assumptions. We must be present in those powerful teachable moments that Sts hold in THEIR hands. #G2Great
Isn't that discomfort where learning happens? This is cognitive dissonance no? Teaching through #inquiry where we encourage kids to ask and to find out is a constructive and productive discomfort that leads to deeper understanding. #G2Great#BeingTheChange
I remember that so well. Each year trying to explain my name to kids was hard enough, but to the teacher was devasting. Find ways before that attendance roll call to connect with your students. #g2great
A2: This is page 1 of author Anh Do’s “WEIRDO” This is how many kids feel on day 1 when that attendance roster comes out.

I privately ask ALL students to say their name for me when I greet them on Meet the Teacher day. This way, I know how each and every child wants their name pronounced. It also lets me know if they use a name other than the official one on the roster. #G2Great
A3 I see this as partnership in communication and connection. Talking WITH instead of talking to or AT. A full dose of authentic empathy added as well. #G2great
In my classroom - respectful listening is when my students are able to hear another 7 year old's story and respond with empathy. #BeingTheChange#G2Great
You are so right. And being candid that we don't always know the anwsers but we are willing to muddle through it with them. Thank you, Lee! #beingthechange#G2Great
A3: Honesty: today I had a student come up and start talking to me while I was busy- when he finished I said- uh-huh. Then I stopped, realized I didn’t hear him, looked at him and said: I’m sorry, I didn’t hear any of what you said, come sit down where I can listen #G2Great
A3. Empathically listening with love means creating a culture of conferring, not just between teacher and student, but student to student. Listening is a skill that can be taught with just as much intentional scaffolding as rdg and writing. #G2Great

A1 - In order to be the change and bring that title to life I think we first must address and admit a need for change. It is so easy to continue on as if everything is okay, that's easy. Seeing a need and addressing the need is work. #g2great
In my classroom - respectful listening is when my students are able to hear another 7 year old's story and respond with empathy. #BeingTheChange#G2Great
A3 I love using #restorativepractices to listen and heal. We use circles and talking pieces to help everyone learn how to listen respectively and ultimately heal #g2great
Yes, we can't exist in the world w/o bias that was my fear as a student that I would make mistakes and rush to judgments based on my experiences. This is still a constant source of reflection for me. Each day I try to know more than I did before #G2Great
Love it! This semester I learned that one student loves Judge Judy, another works w/adults w/special needs in the summer, one lost her sister at a young age, & another ran her first marathon. They all have stories and lives outside of school that shape their identities. #G2Great
A3: it should look the same as it does when you are talking with someone you care about. You earnestly want to know what they want to tell you. And we have to help Ss see that as a norm and genuinely feel that need to be and display “presentness” #G2Great
A3. Empathically listening with love means creating a culture of conferring, not just between teacher and student, but student to student. Listening is a skill that can be taught with just as much intentional scaffolding as rdg and writing. #G2Great
This is awesome! Expose, don't impose! Texts that provides Ss with new perspectives into the lives of others can shrink the globe and build interconnectedness! #g2great
A3 We need a culture where we are open to share our thoughts/feelings/emotions. We need to be mindful, include everyone, speak with love, respect, kindness. We need to not only encourage it; our actions must prove it. Be the change you want to see. Be kind. Always. #g2great
A3 When our rooms are FILLED w/far more engaging student to student collaborations than teacher to student teaching, we can be a fly on the proverbial wall soaking in all they have to teach us. #G2Great
A3. Respectful listening starts with modeling from the classroom teachers. Children absorb what they are exposed to. My Pre-k children are now sharing stories and acting the out. Respectful comments are encouraged #litbankstreet#g2great
A3: Just listening with heart and mind! Ss know when we’re really and wholeheartedly paying attention.
We we really listen, we open door for them to express their needs because we care
#g2great
I can’t think of anyone who LIVES that message more than you my friend. You are the epitome of love, respect and kindness!!! @SaraKAhmed@HeinemannPub#G2Great

We need to first come to terms with the systemic issues in our nation and world that are deeply engrained in the minds of the people. That work starts with us. #BeingtheChange

A2: #G2Great Put what you're working on down and look at the student as they're talking to you. SHOW them that you care and want to hear what they have to say thru your actions. Ask questions. Model this for Ss so they can do it with each other too.
A3: Honesty: today I had a student come up and start talking to me while I was busy- when he finished I said- uh-huh. Then I stopped, realized I didn’t hear him, looked at him and said: I’m sorry, I didn’t hear any of what you said, come sit down where I can listen #G2Great
Q3 Laura, K-2 math coach from CT jumping in - glad I'm here! I was inspired by @SaraKAhmed podcasts & can't wait to read the book. Listening with love is just that - listening. No commenting/reacting. As adults we feel the need to solve when Ss just need us to listen. #g2great
A3 Respectful listening is more than just putting a thought out there - it's taking a moment to let it sink in, and then trying to connect to it. This is one of the trickiest parts of book clubs for 4th graders. #g2great
For sure! Student to student conferring is so powerful, and it is what we hope to see transfer out beyond our classroom walls- empathetic listening in the social realm away from us. #g2great
A3. Empathically listening with love means creating a culture of conferring, not just between teacher and student, but student to student. Listening is a skill that can be taught with just as much intentional scaffolding as rdg and writing. #G2Great
A2: #G2Great Put what you're working on down and look at the student as they're talking to you. SHOW them that you care and want to hear what they have to say thru your actions. Ask questions. Model this for Ss so they can do it with each other too.
#g2great A3: Getting to listening empathetically requires some teaching of what that is and how to do it. Teachers must model true and genuine interest in their students, listening carefully, laughing with kids, crying with them, celebrating their joys.
A2 - Great words @DrMaryHoward - CHOICE & BRAVE! Time is a valuable tool in working to follow @SaraKAhmed’s advice of valuing all voices. So much pressure on educators to move fast. The brave choice of taking time for meaningful interactions demonstrates caring & value. #G2Great
A3 Genuinely listening to Ss. I struggle with wanting to throw away my plan book at times so that I can spend quality time listening---especially on Mondays or after vacations! #g2great
A3: Genuine statements like: “Tell me more.” “I like what ___ said when she said ___, because ___.” “Welcome back _____ we missed learning with you yesterday.” “How is life treating you?” Ask with love. Respond with love. #G2Great
A2: Take time to get to know Ss & their interests; Plan based on interests; let them set their own goals; give them choice projects/activities; let them be a part of planning as a classroom team=Ss voice & get to know classmates and you #g2great
A3: being fully present when you listen (Ss know when you’re pretending)...allow them to speak without interrupting. Then, remember what they shared and follow up on it afterward. Show you care by being there. #G2Great

A3. Stop multitasking. It's hard as Ts because we're juggling too many things. But when we're with Ss, we need to be WITH them. Face to face, eye to eye: we need to start with an opening listening stance. #G2Great
A3: Being totally present in the moment. Giving them the time and space to share what they think and feel. Ensuring our students know that we truly believe what they have to say is valued by all. #G2Great

A3 How often do we say, wait a minute I’ll get back to you and don’t. Our busy time needs to take a back seat to the kids in or room. If we want that kind of interaction from our students that would be one way to show that we value. #g2great
A2 Being intentional (not a chore, a delight) to get to know students lives outside school. @SaraKAhmed says it so well--keep a running list of 10 things Ss tell you about themselves. Not your assumptions, but the pieces of themselves they trust you with. #G2Great
A3: Respectful listening would also mean understandthe child who is acting out isn’t “bad” but trying to tell you something about his or her needs too #G2Great
Would love to be a student in the classrooms of teachers who are trying this work. I know both @pernilleripp and @MrazKristine wrote about their experiences in their rooms. Thanks for continuing to share yours, Janet! #G2Great
A2: I've been using @SaraKAhmed 's book with my class and they LOVED the identity web and name story. I get to know my students as people beyond students in my classroom, and then I bring in that knowledge to my teaching. I also try to work a lot of voice & choice into my class.
A3: I look for Ss & Ts speaking kindly, respectfully, excitedly with each other. No one standing above another & talking down to another (figuratively & literally). See all noticing how each other (feels, says, does) and responding appropriately. #g2great
A4 If we don’t feel discomfort from time to time, we may be blind to learning that abounds at every turn. Discomfort is real-life opportunity that affords us to become learners. #G2Great
Listening w/ the intent to compassionately hear another human being. To grow expansively in one's mind & heart & actions. @tianasilvas once said on a @HeinemannPub
podcast that compassion is empathy plus action taken.
So, listening that leads to compassionate action.
#g2great
A3 It would mean slowing down to allow for that precious wait time, a.k.a. think time, a.k.a. listening time so we can truly hear each other, think thru what's being shared, and acknowledge each others' contributions within the safe space of our classroom #G2Great#BeingTheChange
A4 We need to build a community of learners with respect and kindness. Courageous conversations must happen, but we must be authentic and speak/listen with respect & love. We never attack; we challenge, we learn, we grow...together, as a community. Let us grow in love. #g2great

A4: We really have to give ourselves permission to not know outcomes but believe in our heart that the very values that drive this work are going to make a difference no matter how many oops & slip ups there may be. #G2Great#BeingTheChange
#g2great My Ss are constantly "correcting" me - whether it's something I forgot to do (change the day in the message, or update the schedule) or something I said incorrectly (my mind was thinking abt more than one thing & jumbled up words!) I laugh, and they do 2! Walk the walk.
#G2great@DrMaryHoward I so agree Mary. And this is a comforting thought because I have “growing pains” all the time as a teacher and I like thinking that it is because I am learning.
A4 If we don’t feel discomfort from time to time, we may be blind to learning that abounds at every turn. Discomfort is real-life opportunity that affords us to become learners. #G2Great
A4. To get more comfortable with discomfort starts with a habit of self-reflection and asking ourselves the hard questions: Why did I react that way? Why am I uncomfortable? What would it take for me to move forward, even if just a little? #G2Great
A4: For me, the discomfort can be lessened when I focus on communicating my thinking without any expectations- just being open to the conversation #G2Great
A4: Keep doing it! When kids see us fail and admit our faults they can too, knowing that we will move on and learn from our mistakes. I like to point out to my kids the "best mistake of the day".#G2Great

A3 creating an environment where collaborative communication is valued and supported. Listening is a skill and needs to be modeled in order for Ss to learn to listen because they want to not because they have to #G2Great
A4 I think that these critical qualities can be the hardest to LIVE because it means that we have to become risk takers. That can be scary but within that comes great opportunity. #G2Great

A4 If you are a teacher who watches, listens, circulates among Ss to be responsive to needs and what’s happening. When you teach children, not programs you always cope with discomfort. Part of what we do. Having a PLN can help. #G2Great

Each year I revamp my curriculum to include the demographics in my classroom. This year I had a few Vietnamese students, so I added those narratives in my short story unit. I cover multiple cultures races and backgrounds in all 6 units that I teach so my kids expect it. #g2great
A4. During this evening's white caucus for collective liberation mtg, we discussed & practiced nonviolent communication. White folks are so conditioned that we have a right to comfort & should fear open conflict that it takes intention & practice to experience discomfort #G2Great

A4: Choosing to be our genuine and authentic selves. If your reading a poem and passage sometimes it hits you just right - go with the emotion. Beautiful words have the power to move us, let them. Model your writing process. They learn the process is worth the work. #G2Great
I'm watching amazing words flash across my twitter screen (literally) and it fills me with hope. Edus everywhere are bringing Sara’s message BEING THE CHANGE to life everywhere, Imagine all the kids & ts who will send that out into the world @SaraKAhmed@HeinemannPub#G2Great
By engaging in the work daily. Being in the state of vulnerable, messy, raw work to center equity & justice & inclusion for ALL our kids takes tireless daily work. Being in it, messing up, reflecting & seeking to do better & outgrow constantly is a reality. Keep in it.
#g2great
A4: By exploring our own identities and inherent biases and being okay with calling ourselves out on them. Share our mistakes with students, but point out they are jumping off points to grow #G2Great
A4: It's not about us. @Ready4rigor suggests SODA, Stop, Observe, Detach, and Awaken (to our students) and if I detach, I may interrupt my amygdala and be less uncomfortable. #g2great
I think we have to place ourselves in a situation or imagine a close friend in a situation of tension if it isn’t something that affects us directly. That allows for us to envision how to face it head on. #g2great
A4: Discomfort is necessary for growth to occur. Maya Angelou said, “when you know better, you do better.” You can’t do better if you don’t learn. Sometimes that learning is uncomfortable, but you have to push through it. #G2Great
A3 We don't talk about it often, but it's critical to commit to a pedagogy of listening. Just as I work hard at my "teacher" craft, I want to work equally hard at my "humanity" craft so I can genuinely mentor kids into the world of compassion and empathy we long for.. #g2great
A4 We need honest, self-aware, sincere conversations @ these experiences (w/kids & Ts). There’s no recipe for wading in discomfort but dialogue can gently nudge new understandings. #G2Great
That is so true! I think as educators, we have to learn to be comfortable with our discomfort and model that for our kids. It's an important life skill! #g2great
A4 By practicing it. During #NationalSchoolWalkout I was in a classroom with young S's whose P's had opted out. I ended up just sitting on the floor with them as they talked through their feelings. I was uncomfortable. they were amazing! #G2great#BeingtheChange
A4: Create safe places to experience & practice discomfort. As coach, I have allow myself to be venerable & comfortable w/ discomfort. Never respond w/ defensiveness, always w/ openness, assume positive intent. #g2great
We need to put ourselves out there and share our stories, which can done through both discussions and in writing. But we must also listen. We need to give our students a chance to open up. #G2great
A4 I have zero problem with discomfort and I am too honest for my own good...but I make colleagues uncomfy with new-fangled ideas...and teaching for #SocialJustice makes folks uncomfy as they have to examine their pedagogy, practices, and personal beliefs #G2Great#BeingTheChange
We know that we will always have something to do. Nothing is more important the the heart of a student or person in front of us. We need to live in that moment. Time is the most valuable gift you can offer another. #g2great
A4 we can model struggling with conflict when we pause and say to our Ss thinks like I’m not sure what I think about that. I’ll have to get back to you. Or, I’m having a hard time with this. #G2Great
A4 Build a safe community in your classroom where people can take risks; where they can fall, and people help them back up. This same community should be found in our professional community to help us grow. #G2Great
There’s nothing hard about following a script and I can’t think of a faster way to lose the child behind that script. COMPLIANT DOING is not the same as responsive decision making (and hi friend). @SaraKAhmed@HeinemannPub#G2Great

A5- Modeling. I have to be willing to actively listen and be fully engaged w/ Ss and their perspectives. Model that engagement and exchange of ideas. #g2great
A4: #G2Great oh man this is a tough one. I think maybe part of it is taking it as a learning experience & not criticism of you as a person, while also being open to changing who you are. Easier said than done, but necessary for growth.
A5. Give Ss regular, varied, and multiple opportunities to practice perspective-taking. Consider POVs of characters in books, stakeholders of an issue. Ask Ss not to judge/evaluate, but to UNDERSTAND. #G2Great

Yes, Christina. I think the first place it needs to be modeled is in staff meetings and PD, tbh. We need to be practicing this as well so we can really understand what we are asking kids to do. Then add choice on top of that so they "do" want to listen. #G2Great

A4: it can be hard. I did some crucial conversations training and cognitive coaching this year, and honestly those helped me identify what I’m most likely to do when it gets awkward. It’s helped me be more aware of it. Maybe we could help model uncomfortableness w Ss? #G2Great
A5: Balance the POV with classroom texts & discussions. Allow Ss to note what/who is being silenced & voice missing in the text or even class discussion. Love doing a write around for this reason #g2great
A4) Today a 7 yo told me no one likes him. I went in, sat on the floor w/ everyone in his class & we talked about feelings like that. Kids r amazing. They had characters they referred to that showed kindness. #challenging#necessary#conversations#G2Great
Let our students teach us! Give them a chance to share their experiences. When they do, they can find others they connect with and encourage one another to open up. #G2great
A5Teach speaking and listening skills explicitly. Discussions among students should be happening all the time, so that they are hearing each other and listening to different viewpoints. And I'll say it again-community and trust in your classroom is everything! #G2Great
A4: I regularly challenge myself-big and small. I don’t like getting into the comfort zone for too long. I need to constantly ignite my soul with new ideas. #lifelonglearner#g2Great
A5 Small group and Whole class discussions about "real" topics starting with structure and guidance and eventually letting go...making the class a safe zone for this type of conversation. #G2great
A5: Ss need authentic experiences looking at everyday symbols and ideas in our society from different peoples' points of view. Once they hear the viewpoints of others, they can apply that new learning to all different types of situations. #g2great
A5 Considering the perspective of others ALWAYS begins by choosing to be a model for this role. We can’t ask kids to do something we aren’t willing to do, so this is essential. #G2Great
A5 To consider the perspectives of others, we need to value/teach empathy. To do so, we need to include all voices, all people in our classes. We must teach not to judge, but to listen, to understand and have meaningful/respectful dialogue. Speak w/ kindness. #g2great
A4: During times of frustration, I use the same language that I've coached my Ss to use...it helps them see that we are all working on regulating our emotions & it actually helps me feel calmer when I say, "I need to stop and take a belly breath" ..err 2 belly breaths #g2great
Yes, Christina. I think the first place it needs to be modeled is in staff meetings and PD, tbh. We need to be practicing this as well so we can really understand what we are asking kids to do. Then add choice on top of that so they "do" want to listen. #G2Great

I think we’re all guilt of that with the adults in our lives too. There is nothing quite as powerful as looking eyeball to eyeball with an open heart! @SaraKAhmed@HeinemannPub#G2Great

yep, @MisterMinor is the model of Learning in Public and exudes this everywhere he goes! I've watched him do it over pizza and at the playground. #G2Great
In addition to modeling, offering sentence stems for positive discourse is necessary across grade levels for Ss & then highlighting, "When I heard . . . I was impressed because . . ." #g2great
A5 By having discussions that build active listening. This means students listen and respond to ideas of peers by asking questions, adding details, extending ideas. It’s not about tossing out your idea but engaging in meaningful conversations. #G2Great
Yes— and it can be hard to teach students to do this. I was taking with a teacher at my school about this yesterday—teenagers who resist holding alternative perspectives in their minds. We just keep trying, listening, nudging... hoping. #G2great
A5: Give students opportunity to see multiple sides with the texts we share and by giving opportunities to work together with classmates who they may not always work with. Help foster respectful and deep conversations and debates where all voices can truly be heard #G2Great
A5. I think it's also important to teach Ss to start with a stance of "the benefit of the doubt." Rather than quickly dismiss an opinion they might not agree with, accept that this POV is true for this person or group & seek to understand how and why they feel that way. #G2Great
#g2great A5 Book clubs are where the most organic stances occur. Most Ss have learned to watch the speaker, consider perspective & respond vs. calling out "facts" & ignoring "feelings" like in a business mtg.
A5 We have to respect that considering the perspective of others isn’t a one and done lesson. It’s a life-long process that changes according to each unique experience. #G2Great
A5 I love reading books to helps children understand POV. Discussion of perspective opens up that there are many ways to look at situations. Not one right way which presumes “theirs is wrong” #g2great
A4: #g2great@DrMaryHoward@SaraKAhmed@LRobbTeacher
When conferring with students, I sometimes take a quick running record. Reminds me to focus on the reader; I celebrate a noticing with child. This is also being responsive then opens a discussion about interests and goals.

We don't know what we don't know .Having a trusted colleague video you where you feel you may want support (wait time ,engaging all students in conversation, how you sound when teaching /responding) is scary- but very powerful when we learn to trust and deeply reflect #G2Great

A5 Dialogical thinking questions and prompts: Say more about that, Why do you think that? Who has a different perspective? Encouraging peer to peer discussion; using @SaraKAhmed language script from her book! #g2great
A5: most important shift in teaching narrative—write multiple narrator stories. You invite students into the struggle of honoring other voices. #G2Great
A5: Besides trying to model this myself, asking "What do you think they would say (or feel) about this?" Asking them to walk in another's shoes. #G2Great
A5 This can be hard in elementary school. They are still discovering themselves. We have seen great things happen during recess, though. Ss disagreeing, not listening, listening, negotiating, understanding---all in 20 min. #g2great
A wide variety of books need to be visible in a classroom library. Students can discover themselves and gain confidence through these windows and mirrors. #G2great
A5: #G2Great I think 1 thing I do great is presenting mult viewpoints & cultures. My 2nd/3rd gr Ss read abt Charlottesville earlier this fall & we discussed it. I've embraced the idea of books as doors & windows & I've taught them how to analyze why the people included are chosen
A4 there is discomfort in new learning. As ts everytime we try to make our classrooms a better, different place than it was there is discomfort. We have to continue to push through because it’s only when we challenge our prior thinking can new thinking take place #G2Great
Q5 In first grade it means sharing incredible books! There are SO many amazing childrens books that allow students to have deep conversations about the experiences of others #G2great#BeingTheChange
A5. Together with our 6th graders, we're exploring advocacy & the power of personal impact/connection stories. The invitation is to listen not to engage, but to experience the power of story - allows us to focus on listening for understanding #G2Great
A5: Social-Emotional Learning must be embedded into the curriculum, and modeled consistently. When Ss employ self and social awareness, they naturally begin to value the perspectives of others. #G2great
A5: Reading aloud books where characters face critical decisions and issues is always a great way to teach kids how to discuss important topics. #G2Great
Q6. This starts way early. No child is a letter, color or number. Not a score. Honor names. Make sure every student knows every other student and can say & write their name. Lots of collaborative work where everyone has opportunities to work in multiple groups!
#g2great
A5: W/2nd graders is it modeling perspectives with mentor texts. One favorite is They All Saw a Cat. We have conversations about how another person might feel or see things differently. Tricky for that age fully grasp, but necessary groundwork. #G2Great
A5: Negotiating is the key word...conversations can become tense and when we take the role of listener/facilitator we can quite often see systems of power playing themselves out right before our eyes. Tight rope walking to keep respect at the front. #G2Great#BeingTheChange
Yes! To add on- considering the side of "the other." When discussing Harry Potter in a book club last week, one of my 5th graders said, "Snape probably considers himself the protagonist- let's try to talk about it from his point of view." My mind was blown! #G2Great
A5: most important shift in teaching narrative—write multiple narrator stories. You invite students into the struggle of honoring other voices. #G2Great

A3 - I made a “Love List” after my 3-yr-old recently reminded me how important & powerful the stuff is (https://t.co/rKHaH1Yklb). Reflecting on what love means to & does for me helped me remember how critical it is to listen & lead with it - for me & for those I serve:)! #G2Great
#g2great I couldn't agree more! Also, sometimes, we just need to dive right in and not worry about getting something new "just right." When we do take the plunge, it's like an aha moment of "why did I wait so long?"
A5 Kids watch us so closely and when they see us listen with understanding and an honest desire to lean into others' truth, they can, over time, so how that's possible. They are so smart, so wise, so much more open than many adults. I have such hope in this generation. #G2Great
A5 Create classroom culture of caring & acceptance. Teach scholarly discussion using Accountable Talk sentence stems (Ex. "I respectfully disagree because..." or "Have you considered....").There can be a constructive convos about tough or sensitive issues #G2Great#BeingTheChange
A5: Daily poetry is a powerful perspective shift. I also love @KyleneBeers and @BobProbst’s Book/Head/Heart reading strategy. Help students get the the HEART of their personal WHY. #G2great
A5) oooooh! I just ❤️ this question! Books are a great starting place as are #newsela articles & pictures. Our 5th graders are having some amazing conversations about multiple perspectives based off pix of toy aisles. #extremelove#equity#advocacyinaction#G2Great
A5: Today I had to help a senior negotiate how have a respectful talk w/a friend about not pulling her weight in a group and how she needed to separate the friendship from the school partnership-so hard but such an important life skill #G2great
A6 Relationship building and appreciation for one another. Each person offers something and we tap into that. We question so children question too we grow and change and fight the tyranny of labels. @DrMaryHoward & @franmcveigh to welcome @SaraKAhmed@HeinemannPub#G2Great
A6. Developing empathy is the antidote to "othering." Ss need mirrors, yes, but they also need lots of windows into the lives of others, esp. those marginalized. This is a timely piece. #G2Greathttps://t.co/Ga8dgM5Ini
Q6. This starts way early. No child is a letter, color or number. Not a score. Honor names. Make sure every student knows every other student and can say & write their name. Lots of collaborative work where everyone has opportunities to work in multiple groups!
#g2great
#g2great I have moved my spot at the horseshoe table to be on the outside end so that I can get up and circle the room regularly during discussions. That way, Ss know they are responsible for carrying thoughtful discussion. I'm simply a visitor.

#g2great So many of our kiddos don’t have conversations outside of the classroom. I have listened to so many families speaking in short phrases at each other, not to one another.
A5: There are also fabulous books like Wonder or The Candymakers that tell the reader the same story from multiple perspectives. Shares these and discuss real world implications of how different people interpret the same events. #G2Great

A6 We start by recognizing it when it happens (in ourselves, kids and colleagues). We need to sharpen our lens of what that looks like and sounds like 1st to counteract it. #G2Great
A6: Sharing great literature that has strong, diverse characters and inviting guests into our room, as well as having students share their own stories. #G2Great

We use the #GiftedEd icons of Depth and Complexity with all students. The D&C icon of multiple perspectives helps students identify varying POVs of characters and issues. #G2Great#BeingTheChange
#g2great I have wanted to teach the BHH all yr. Finally tested it out in my small after school group. Got courage to tch to whole class, but wish I had done it at start of yr. Ss seem less receptive to a new strategy at this pt in yr. Ntd for next yr!

A4: Teach replacement behaviors and language. Help Ss recognize the power of their words thru modeling and role playing. Teach them to use ‘I’ messages. Focus on empathy/ Golden rule. “This is what you said/ did. How would you feel if someone did that to you?” #G2Great
A5 I try to remind them that we all have different schema based on who we are and our schema shapes how we see and interpret things. Even my 3rd graders at times have said “let’s agree to disagree because we both see this differently” when they’ve been having discussions #G2Great
A6 We need to stop labeling others. Labels generalize and hurt others. We need to learn, value and speak to each person as an individual with needs and a heart. Get to know your students. They are everything. Be there. #g2great

A6: This question feels especially important being in the middle of high-stakes testing season. If we place too much value on Ss and the need to "pass" tests, we are reducing them to a number, when that is least important thing we will learn about them. #bethechang#g2great

A7 I'm going to resist the temptation to jump in and "correct" how a child views a situation and ask them more questions to help them uncover why they hold that belief. So I guess my answer is less answers, and more questions--thoughtful, nonjudgmental questions #g2great

A 7 I think being in the moment with people- being present to them. It is hard to remember this in the hectic pressures of schools with all that is demanded of Ts yet all else is trivial compared to being present. If we give our time all else follows. #g2great
Same. We're doing good work, but it's not about that. It's about always asking, "how can I do better, who am I missing, and why?" #G2Great#BeingTheChange
