Q1. I think it should say quality differentiated instruction, I think anyone can do it, it's just how engaging it is.
Hi Kebra from Osage City! Running late, just got back from a huge grocery haul!
Really good, strong group in the house tonight!!
Do you mean for /. You are wleocme!
Thanks for your leadership on !
Hi ! Checking in late from my hotel. Oops! :)
A1 why not focus on differentiated learning?
A1: As Ts we have to get creative w/ time/energy/lessons to be able to reach all of our Ss where they are. https://t.co/fGQs0FlF9r
A1 That's the art of teaching, reaching every S in a way that they can relate regardless of their ability level.
Q1: No doubt it takes creativity and innovation...But it also takes strategic thinking and organization
A1: yes! I like the different colored pencils, that are different sizes
A1: I would add, " and without knowing your students as individuals."
Yay! Another eagle in the house! Give her a follow! https://t.co/GEsqhrNPaB
Megan, 5th grade teacher from Ness City joining from Scott City
Jonathan Eshnaur, high school special education, Salina KS
A1: You can differentiate learning no matter what tools you have access to.
A1. Doing what is best for each student means thinking outside the norms of the classroom and being bold in your lesson design
A1: Not sure you have to be innovative - there are so many good ideas out there already tried and successfully differentiated.
A1: I don't know that you have to be innovative (it helps) to do DI, but you def need to get creative!
A1-Ss are all diff. Can't teach in exactly the came way. It takes all the pencils in your box to reach all the kids.
A1: I think it is impossible to meet the needs of each student without being creative and innovative. Constant change
A1 great question - what is the focus on? Teaching or learning. Quality diff instr leads to diff learning https://t.co/Pb9N0mG0Xt
A1: Be creative, innovative...and allow for student choice. Choice is so important to motivation.
A1: Educators must think outside the box to provide all students opportunities to learn.
YES! There is differentiation I did 5 yrs ago and differentiation I do now. Very different! https://t.co/ssV530izDD
Q1. I think it should say quality differentiated instruction, I think anyone can do it, it's just how engaging it is.
A1: The "one size fits all" does not apply to the classroom. Each student is unique.
Constant change is important! Our kids are changing so we need to as well!
A1: Ts have 2 be innovative bc what has "always worked" doesnt anymore!
Melissa- Teacher librarian from Newton USD 373 joining in.
Shelby, 2nd grade from Ness City!
A1: differentiated instruction looks different in each classroom as well as year because you have new students.
Constant battle for sure. https://t.co/0dAWqHpaZC
I feel like creative on my part takes time, that I don't always feel like I have to give.
one can change but not necessarily for the good of learners. Continually improving = meeting the needs of learners
Agree! Don't be afraid to ask and search out methods that have worked. https://t.co/Efh0FljIP7
A1: Not sure you have to be innovative - there are so many good ideas out there already tried and successfully differentiated.
I also feel that everyone is creative and innovated just at different levels.
it's good to be back. Thanks!
A1-Ss deserve Ts that will respect learning differences
A1: Each student is unique. Think outside the box. The art room is a perfect place for this!
A1: I think it important to be fluid and flexible in the classroom in order to be use DI in any area. Be willing to change
A1: reading The Innovator's Mindset - innovation starts by asking what is best for THIS learner? Ts must see Ss as individuals
A1: good diff instr is not just changing a few worksheet answers or simple mods. Requires deep thinking & work & creativity
And not everyone's creativity and innovation looks the same! Just as our kids are individuals, so are we!
A1: I think it's possible to do differentiation without those aspects, but it won't be nearly as successful or fun!
eagle representing tonight! Love the new energy these ladies r going to bring! Give her a follow! https://t.co/oVcrhkpqaD
Shelby, 2nd grade from Ness City!
Yes! Continual improvement > change.
Q1: Agreed! It's not just changing the worksheet for each group. But really thinking about how to focus your purpose for each group
A1: each S is unique with a unique set of skills and deficits. It takes creativity and perseverance to connect.
A1: plus solid planning by flexible teachers that celebrate the differences of students.
A1- Creativity and organization are very important to pull off successful DI.
I completely agree and I love trying to use art in the ELA area! https://t.co/Gd1zsHqJ8T
A1: Each student is unique. Think outside the box. The art room is a perfect place for this!
So true! Or are as creative or innovated with the same tools.
A1: Even if you don't feel that you are creative or innovative, you can still find great resources with strong research.
very good point. Finding other people resources is always good for me!
A1: I think it is important 4 Ts know where the class is going before development of differentiated instruction for Ss.
Great point! we can embrace & celebrate these diff so we can ALL learn from & with one another https://t.co/fyYhDRrOkL
A1: plus solid planning by flexible teachers that celebrate the differences of students.
Well said! https://t.co/mHIDse53qv
And not everyone's creativity and innovation looks the same! Just as our kids are individuals, so are we!
Personally and professionally, I think it's true. :-)
preach girlfriend! 🙌🏻 I can't stand that phrase- education is always evolving and changing
Library- providing free choice and meeting the needs of each different student reading needs is essential.
I'm new to this and late! Kara Bunce and I'm a newbie to USD 313
I guess I'm taking "innovative" too literally. I beg, borrow, and steal from a lot of places. Diff combos for diff students.
Totally agree. Would ask if it "has always worked" since each year brings new Ss and new challenges
. I've never heard a S say, "that was an awesome worksheet!" I have heard them say, "that was an awesome project!"
Many times the best resource is the teacher right next door.
Love it! Once I started celebrating the differences, can't help but want to differentiate! https://t.co/yxOMrWtE2W
A1: plus solid planning by flexible teachers that celebrate the differences of students.
it always has to be fun for me. If I'm not having fun I'm sure they aren't either
But finding the right tools and things for our Ss is innovative!
Learning how to self select reading material is a LIFELONG skill
There are many times I hit up my fellow Ts for help and driveby ideas https://t.co/WcqLeMxqy3
Many times the best resource is the teacher right next door.
I’m new too! Welcome Kara!
https://t.co/umOVOfiZzq
I'm new to this and late! Kara Bunce and I'm a newbie to USD 313
A1: To differentiate, one has to be creative and innovative to have it be successful, and fun!
A2 the smartest people in the room is the room itself. Social media flattens walls to allow everyone to learn w/ each other
yes! Use your resources , with the Internet and lots of teachers in your building you don't have to look far!
So true! I have some wonderful resources in my ELA hallway. They inspire me everyday. https://t.co/HT4hFVCjOG
Many times the best resource is the teacher right next door.
A2. Yes! We need to be teaching our Ss how to use social media to their advantage. Blocking it doesn't teach them anything
I love that phrase! "Driveby ideas" - love sharing with you and stealing ideas, too! https://t.co/TouzjEsLsG
There are many times I hit up my fellow Ts for help and driveby ideas https://t.co/WcqLeMxqy3
Many times the best resource is the teacher right next door.
A1 I believe you have to be creative, but it's as easy as having the students getting up and moving.
Creativity and innovation is key to differentiation. That thinking outside the box helps create unique lessons for unique learners
A2 Agree! My Ss wouldn't of had some of the experiences they had w/o FB/Twitter ( )
A2 we need to help them learn how to navigate the world 24/7 - not block them from it for 8 hours
A2: We live in a very public world. We need to teach Ss how to use it properly. Tech gives some Ss their voice. Let's embrace it!
This chat is really ROCKIN' tonight!!
A2) Allow Ss to see they can make a difference at a young age. Let them lead and serve others. Instill that quality at early age
A2: I totally agree. Show Ss how to us social media properly & give them reasons to create positive posts.
A2: Schools need 2 teach & partner with parents to teach digital citizenship at a very early age 2 make social media safe for all.
A2. as we evolve there is a place for social media in the classroom, we cannot pretend it does not exist by pushing it out
A2: & teaching them how to use it responsibly. We can't assume they know. Digital legacy is important!
A1: And then teaching kids good digital citizenship so that they know how to handle/sort/process the information available to them
Blocking is not the answer, teach smart digital literacy!
A2: I believe that social media is a great source for Ts and Ss learning as long as they're used appropriately.
Yes!!! https://t.co/UYBuhjgq8i
A2: We live in a very public world. We need to teach Ss how to use it properly. Tech gives some Ss their voice. Let's embrace it!
A2: That's one reason we love , for helping Ss and Ps respond to feedback and practice good digital citizenship.
Right! Because it's going to be there whether we want it to or not! Let's make sure we show them good ways!
A2: very controversial topic. We need to teach them how to use social media effectively with etiquette not take it away
A2 access to humanity can happen through multiple means. Ex: and all her skype contacts! Mainly found through TWITTER
Q2: I've personally struggled with this but starting to focus on connections, opportunities social media make available to Ss.
A2: Social media is a part of our world and we should embrace the positive aspects it has to offer.
Q2 We shouldn't block social media because they are valuable tools but we do need to help Ss understand the humanity behind media
A2: We know Ss use it-let's teach them how to use it successfully to better them. We have PLNs - why not for Ss as well?
A2: speaks about this topic so well!We have to give Ss the chance to connect globally for good https://t.co/u9s8nrbhoR
Another important aspect of social media. They need to realize they are creating their digital footprint. https://t.co/KaroYgnA5J
A2: I totally agree. Show Ss how to us social media properly & give them reasons to create positive posts.
A2-Ss have grown up w/ Social media, when we block it we block their natural comm
A2: so how would you do this with 2nd graders, 1 iPad, and 5 desktops?
Can't wait until we can sit down and talk about how you do all of this. Definitely interested!
exactly! Find applicable ways to utilize it.
A2 imp to responsibly model and use social media in the classroom to teach Ss now as opposed to letting them discover on their own
A2. if kids across the country could engage as we are now- powerful implications for learning and teaching social responsibility
A2 SM is part of the world...need to help them develop citizenship
As says- we want them to be global and not snowglobed. Social media allows Ss to think globally
A2: Big difference between negative social media and positive social media. Using the positive side is so fulfilling
A2: We have so many tools at our fingertips-we just have to use them in a productive way that encourages dig. cit. skills and acad.
A2: digital citizenship instruction is so important and lacking! Whether we block it or not Ss live there we must provide tools
A2-Humanity is online. Teach our kids to be human when online. #
Would be very cool for you to do this with an author!
character traits like that are so important! Yes, yes and yes!!
A2: its crazy 2 ignore what is going on in the world! like ne thing else we need 2 teach Ss how 2 use social media responsibly
Q2: it is not about control it is about education of how to use the tolls at hand responsibly. Adults and S need to be informed!
Sliding in late...Tracy from PSU College of ED
A2 i'm not saying they have to be turned off, but there are other ways for students to access people from all over
A2: Totally agree as a teacher. As a parent it's easier said than done.
I like this "blocks their natural community" https://t.co/YBJsMoXdRW
A2-Ss have grown up w/ Social media, when we block it we block their natural comm
A2: Pt.2 -my frosh said they use at least 12 different social media sites. Interesting convo. that reinforced need for teaching.
A2: I do think there is a value to having students unplug from social media at times.
A2: I'm fighting an uphill battle on this one. Ts see it as a distraction.
Such a great place to start for those who feel Twitter or Instagram expose our kids too much
and can sometimes cause resentment.
A2: social media is part of this generation...we should embrace it and teach them to manage it with correct digital citizenship
i was able 2 sit in w/ a 4th gr class skyping w/ SO awesome!
If we don't model at earlier age, who knows where Ss will learn social media norms & expectations
Yes! Teach them how to brand themselves and promote the good that they do! Agreed!
very good point. Breaks down barriers and they can feel more comfortable in that environment.
Have you looked into the app. Totally age appropriate beginning to social media--approved by the teacher.
I need to record a soundbite of and everytime Qs like this come up, tweet it. https://t.co/u1ic8HdmEv
As says- we want them to be global and not snowglobed. Social media allows Ss to think globally
A2:Students need to be guided. They have to learn when it is appropriate to use social media and what devices (personal vs school)
well said https://t.co/wNgrB2kkES
A2 the smartest people in the room is the room itself. Social media flattens walls to allow everyone to learn w/ each other
This is exactly right. Why block Facebook but allow Twitter and email? Teach responsibility. https://t.co/JAYQsce5u8
A2 we need to help them learn how to navigate the world 24/7 - not block them from it for 8 hours
A2: I think it can be an awesome tool for new ideas and communicating with others but might need some expectations set first!
A2: teaching Ss digital citizenship is key to helping them unlock the outside world via positive social media experiences
A2: Ss are using social media. If they don't learn how to use it properly now, it can have lasting consequences for their future.
I see this also. That's why it needs to be addressed with Ss and Ts in successful uses https://t.co/dr0LA2jJNp
A2: I'm fighting an uphill battle on this one. Ts see it as a distraction.
Is this a good time to thank my school for going 1-to-1 next year?
A2: I agree that we don't need all Social Media 24/7, but I do have use for phones and such in my room. It can be powerful
A2: How can we expect students to know how to use social media appropriately, if they do not have role models present?
Value in me unplugging as well! https://t.co/oz4Dt9vNez
A2: I do think there is a value to having students unplug from social media at times.
Yep! You don't know what you don't know until it is too late sometimes. Need to work to prevent this for both Ts & Ss.
Jumping in late...I apologize! Amy - Eudora Elementary Principal
oh...They have social media role models. They just aren't always good ones!
Phone dying. 2 1/2 hr board meeting going. Will catch up tomorrow.
It certainly is. Well said! https://t.co/p2UH5gt5hU
A2: social media is part of this generation...we should embrace it and teach them to manage it with correct digital citizenship
So true! It is easy to hide behind a comment and not associate the feelings. We can bring the emotion into it.
Excellent point! https://t.co/bzTWx2PTyo
A2: Ss are using social media. If they don't learn how to use it properly now, it can have lasting consequences for their future.
Teaching SS to use social media as a tool will help them grow as digital citizens. After all, what are we doing right now?
A2 we are teaching students new skills, not necessarily skills we learned as students. That can be intimidating for some
Preventive modeling will get ahead of problem usage
A3: I see this as grades - if we can get the focus off the grade an back on the learning, I will call that a win.
Easy to argue that blocking takes their mind off of it more than responsible use. They know expectations, they follow.
To me, unplugging is part of learning, being good digital citizen and part of what we teach, but only part https://t.co/mMrv9yuXC6
A2: I do think there is a value to having students unplug from social media at times.
A3. When we stop focusing on test scores and grades, we start giving Ss more authentic learning experiences!
A3: I'm not going to say I'm good at non worrying as I came from NCLB era, but am getting better...(1/2) https://t.co/tpe9wjDcG5
Q4: it's important to reflect on data to help better instruction but some of the most teachable moments don't include data
A3: Stop worrying about the data. Focus on what is important! The kids and their journey! We win when they do!
A3: my goal 4 nx yr! Super hard 2 do this while being so closely watched based on "stats"
A2 "On the Internet, unlike in their daytime classrooms, young people act on their curiosity." -Tony Wagner
A3) Through hard work, results will happen. Don't worry about being a star. Work with others to accomplish goals. You will shine
A3: (2/2) Getting better allowed room 4 things like makerspace, STEM, reading 4 the love of reading, etc. https://t.co/tpe9wjDcG5
A3: Saw this quote-"Our teaching shouldn't be data driven, it should be student driven." Student focus equals winning
A3: Stats are helpful for feedback IF appropriately acquired/interpreted. I need more models on how this is successfully done!
A3: I don't worry about "state assessments." I worry about kids learning. I don't review for assessments. Kids still preform.
A3 data is not always about a test score. When we focus on the , we focus on essential life skills as well
A3 Assessments/Tests can NOT be the end all be all. Ss need to have a voice/choice in showing us what they know.
A3 most of what i want to accomplish with Ss cannot be measured or put into statistics
A3: Hopefully the new act will help Ts not make test scores the end all, just a measurement of the Ss at that moment.
A3:When we stop focusing on grades and assessment scores, we begin to see our Ss for who they are and real learning can occur.
A3 we as educators are constantly worrying about testing, but if we do what we know how to do the scores will come with it!
A3: Focus on the goal: to prepare to our kids to be lifelong learners in real world situations! Look beyond test scores!
A3. Pressure is put on test scores, which can take enjoyment out of learning & teaching, increase engagement &success will follow
A3: Ts know what is best for their Ss, the same as players for their teams. We need to trust our gut instincts learn forward.
A3: Reflection and feedback are opportunities. Worrying is negative goal setting
what's gonna work..TEAMWORK
A3: Data should be part of the decision making process... That doesn't mean data is limited to test scores.
A3: Worrying about stats & data is diff than looking at it and using it. It's 1 piece of info. Use it but don't freak out abt it.
A3: Always turn your focus to your students - rather than the numbers. Do your best for your students and you'll win.
When we worry about "stats" such as grades or test scores, we are limiting the creativity and learning power of our Ss.
To be 100% honest, I'm hoping will share his thoughts on this question!
Well said - said its not what we teach, it is what they learn" How do we provide authentic lrng https://t.co/4dWFxgZgCN
A3 Assessments/Tests can NOT be the end all be all. Ss need to have a voice/choice in showing us what they know.
A3: focus on the entire child and helping him/her be successful. Academics are important but not focused solely on a std test.
love the gif! Ha ha! Glad I could help 😊
Important to always think, is this for me or for the students? If doing it for you, that's not a good reason. Always Ss first
A3: My philosophy is to teach the children in my room and provide them opportunities. Stats seem to then take care of themselves.
A3-when we as Ts stop focusing on numbers and start focusing on Ss, the best learning happens
. Agreed. In many cases percentage grades are more a reflection of assignment completion than student learning.
A4: Data = essential to guiding instruction/ntervention/differentiation/etc. Actual scores don't need 2 b stressed over.
A3: There is often more than 1 way to measure success! Focusing on a test score might not show the entire picture.
Great question. It is going to be a major shift in perception that is needed.
I also feel like we limit ourselves as Ts when we worry so much about test scores. Our creativity is key to growing young minds.
That would be so cool if he does! What would be cooler would be if he would let me augment his response!!
so right the WHOLE child. Emotionally, physically and academically because all of these affect performance.
A4: soooo many books this summer! Starting "Pax" now
A3 always believe that daily/weekly anecdotal records trump standardized data b/c of the personal connection- so valuable
I worry data collection will be new state assessment- focus is on result not true student learning. https://t.co/8YoD9UCtVe
A3 Stats are just one piece of the puzzle. When we focus too much on any one thing other areas tend to suffer.
A3- Focus on learning/relationships with S not on test scores.
Numbers don't tell the whole story anyway. Get the whole picture!
Yes!!! https://t.co/jTVOAE9T0i
A3:When we stop focusing on grades and assessment scores, we begin to see our Ss for who they are and real learning can occur.
A3: I think of the quote we hear sometimes from Ss, "Is this for a grade?" We need to shift the Ss mindset away from that.
Agree. Teaching to a test is usually not enjoyable for the students. True teaching will take learning much farther
Lori from The Service Center @ Clearwater... Excited to join for the 1st time!
Agreed! https://t.co/3ooZPQly3o
A3: I think of the quote we hear sometimes from Ss, "Is this for a grade?" We need to shift the Ss mindset away from that.
Impressed with all you newbies jumping right in!! YOU ROCK!
A3: There has to be measurement, but teachers shouldn't focus on measurement, but on student learning, and the scores will come.
I always give the response that it is for knowledge so one day you will be smarter than me. https://t.co/WxR6mJgkbs
A3: I think of the quote we hear sometimes from Ss, "Is this for a grade?" We need to shift the Ss mindset away from that.
The last few weeks of school I had kids engineering boats ... 30 groups and they knew there was no grade!!
grades are often the currency students see. Huge shift to make,
not enjoyable for the teacher either! >.<
Diff between stats of learning vs FOR learning. Data driven dialogue is powerful. Takes away excuses.
Well said! My former sec. guidance counselor always told our staff, "Rule #1: It's not about you." :-) https://t.co/FdcYL7ftWk
Important to always think, is this for me or for the students? If doing it for you, that's not a good reason. Always Ss first
And there was involved. !!
A3 Ss enter kindergarten with a creative, growthmindset. What happens throughout schooling that Ss lose this?
A3: Building meaningful relationships gets lost in all the worrying
A3: Part of me wishes Ss weren't in grades, but rather in groups of readiness. Move on to next area when somethings been mastered.
Yes! I would love to see a shift toward this!
YES!!! Other countries do this and it works fantastic!! https://t.co/p4vvSE3oBY
A3: Part of me wishes Ss weren't in grades, but rather in groups of readiness. Move on to next area when somethings been mastered.
some of the KCMO schools attempted this for a while. Not sure of the results
A1: we all learn and respond differently...hence the need to teach in different styles
A4 that is what scares me....
A4: In many areas, that's me. lol But not in teaching. I have never been a "Ditto" teacher. However, our ed system can be that
A4: oh, this might be me! Change is hard work!!
A4: Talk is always easier than action.
A4: This makes me think of the quote, "you get out what you put in."
A4: We all want a change but don't want to change ourselves. Once we change our then we can embrace change.
A4: As a T, change is hard when you love the topic, but as others said, is it about the student? That is the focus.
A4. That sounds like a lot of people in our profession. They want to see a difference but they're not willing to put in the effort
A4 Love this, gotta be willing to do the leg work for change to occur. Let's stop talking about the problem & find ways to fix it!
A3: pt 2 — The art room brings some freedom from stats/scores. A place to just create!
And requires individuals to feel uncomfortable for awhile. Change isn't easy.
A4 change is hard but our moral imperative is to continually improve to meet the needs of our Ss
A4: So so true! I have been guilty of this a time or 2. Keep positive innovators around u lets change the world!
A4: Change sometimes means failure. But that is how we grow. We can model failure/growth for our Ss. Then they see we're human.
Q4: Change is never easy has 2 be presented the right way focused on Ss. School climate needs 2 be so Ts feel safe with change
A4: Mentally strong ppl don't shy away from change. Book study takeaway!
A4: Changing is active. It requires work. Wanting to change is just something you say
A4-sometimes we don't see our part in the Status Quo, want others to change but don't think we need to
I was just talking about Bill Cordes the other day! Great stuff! https://t.co/ZtIoQ8Pi58
A4: This makes me think of the quote, "you get out what you put in."
very good quote. Thanks for sharing
A4 when change occurs, ask yourself "what about this isn't good for kids?" Let that be your driving force for change
A4: from : this graphic perfectly describes most change. Depends on how it truly affects us! https://t.co/L2XLZ6CHjg
has been my personal mantra since HS. Should be the thought when entering all new learning/pd https://t.co/FRa1FnzRuH
A4: This makes me think of the quote, "you get out what you put in."
A4: Change is never easy has 2 be presented the right way focused on Ss. School climate needs 2 be so Ts feel safe with change
A4: Change challenges the way we've always done things. We can't get caught up in "that's the way we've always done it."
Its good for Ss to see us fail, then go back at it again. Its ok to fail but we have to keep trying! https://t.co/n5GruMm8Yr
A4: Change sometimes means failure. But that is how we grow. We can model failure/growth for our Ss. Then they see we're human.
A4: I think this is relevant. Some know we need change, but can't step out of their comfort zone
A4. I love the book Switch by Chip Heath & Dan Heath. It's powerful for creating change! Easy to read, add to your summer list
A4: we can't expect students to do hard things if we don't. Practice what we preach. Change is hard, but necessary.
A4: It’s easy to get pumped up about change. It’s quite another to change what’s comfortable. Who moved my cheese?
A4: This makes me think of Ts and Ss. How are we expecting our Ss to try new things or change when we aren't willing to try?
A4: The hard part for any adult is getting out of our comfort zone. We need that supportive push to make change happen.
A4: Change is good for everyone. Change brings challenges, fresh ideas, new opportunities.
Which is why art and other electives are so important for balance in a S's day.
It is so hard to set out of your comfort zone or to be the voice that has an idea for the change.
A4: Never be afraid to jump in with both feet but then turn around and say "ya, that didn't work"
Love how it's kids-first here. Yes, it's hard, but we're in a self-sacrificing profession, here!
A4:the ability to change and grow is an amazing thing about teaching, but being open to change is about changing your mindset
Q4: Don't just stay where it's comfortable! Easier said than done, but so worth it! Our kids deserve it!
A4: change is a little scary to me just because sometimes changing = failing. have 2 start 2 love failing and encourage/embrace it
People fear change. Change means hard work, stepping out of comfort zone, failure sometimes.
Change=growth https://t.co/iwwocIdnm1
I have the pleasure of working at where change is embraced, and focused on what is best for kids! https://t.co/alsq7dKwNZ
A4: Change is never easy has 2 be presented the right way focused on Ss. School climate needs 2 be so Ts feel safe with change
A4: I'm hung up on the position of the "leader" in this picture. How is he inspiring/supporting change?
https://t.co/rAuUdtr5Th
we model for our students the importance of growth mindset by trying and failing in front of them!
Change means that you're in a learning mindset. If you aren't moving forward, you're standing still.
A4: change also needs to be thought out before jumping in. Otherwise it's like wanting to go somewhere without a map.
People say "that's how I've always done it." Doesn't that get boring? Change is so hard but necessary for growth.
A4: "Feel the fear and do it anyway!"
A4: but the thing is, is that it doesn't have to be huge. Little steps. One thing new to try. What's that quote?
A4: Change is always challenging. But as teachers we need to be up for that challenge to help our students.
has been def gotten me through this yr!
We need to outlaw that phrase! https://t.co/NUyWDBh3sy
A4: Change challenges the way we've always done things. We can't get caught up in "that's the way we've always done it."
A4) Change is harder for some because it's not what is always easier. We have to do what's right for kids, not easiest for us
A4 If we allow fear to dictate our life decisions, we will never reach our full potential! Our students need a safe environment!
Should always come down to what is best for kids. https://t.co/NR8z0GZzeP
A4) Change is harder for some because it's not what is always easier. We have to do what's right for kids, not easiest for us
A4: change is inevitable...similar to the theory of natural selection...those willing to adapt will continue to thrive 😉
SO true! This is a great opportunity to teach the power of reflection!
A4 Change is constant in education. We rarely stick with one thing long enough. Hard to get excited with each new thing.
A4: Change just for the purpose of change is not the answer. It must create a better future. Latest is not always the greatest.
I think that is why I like technology so much. It changes if I want it to or not so I've learn to go with the flow and adapt.
Holy Moly! We are almost finished with ! Last image is coming up at 8:50 pm.
well said! what is the reason for change? Process improvement? More efficiency? https://t.co/3p2pjf8q62
A4: Change just for the purpose of change is not the answer. It must create a better future. Latest is not always the greatest.
Ss and Ts need to have the same . Things are going to change if we like it or not. Be flexible and adapt.
A4: I agree that change is hard and scary, but it is definitely necessary to grow as a teacher and to be a model for students.
Fastest hour of my week! https://t.co/w0OzAIDKY4
Holy Moly! We are almost finished with ! Last image is coming up at 8:50 pm.
A4: Those who think they don't want to change, can still be empowered to become actively part of the movement.
S/O usd313 - it seems that this is a constant question before something is +/- each year https://t.co/KVJsUNypdV
A4: Change just for the purpose of change is not the answer. It must create a better future. Latest is not always the greatest.
preach 🙌🏻 Nothing more frustrating especially to those that are struggling to get through the first change
First step hardest and most empowering https://t.co/vTdSKrye1r
A4: but the thing is, is that it doesn't have to be huge. Little steps. One thing new to try. What's that quote?
A4 We like to feel comfortable, but we can't let that comfort get in the way of creating journeys/ change for our students!
A5. How realistic is it to not let them redo? As adults, are we not given the opportunity to make changes when necessary?
That's why I love tech to. It let's me augment & tweak so many things because its fluid nature. No year is the same!
A5: Are we trying ensure learning takes place or catch students making mistakes?
A5: When it is a step vital to learn, allow a redo. When it is game time - prove you know it. https://t.co/ofYUKN6zqi
A5: It is how we learn. Try ... Try ... Try again. But try different things. We learn from our mistakes.
I made it!. Better late than never. LOL Hello everyone! Laura from KC. Love Monday nights and .
We need to think about feedback vs. grading. Feedback and working on growth easily fits with allowing Ss to redo
A5: this quote and man totally drive my philosophy of grading practices. read about everything of his. https://t.co/7Qw7Xlr46X
A5 they had to learn it by Tuesday..Really????
A5I'd hate to think we were never given a second chance in life so give as the same!
A5) Ss need the chance to learn from failure. Redo work, grow & improve. What if we weren't given second, third chances to grow?
I have to leave! Great thoughts and thanks for the discussion.
I like this. Makes me think of our evaluations. I like being evaluated so I can grow. We need to cultivate that more.
A5: if we teach its ok 2 make mistakes we have 2 allow time to fix said mistakes
We also need students to learn that there is multiple ways of solving a problem and their could be many answers to.
A5: I tell my kids: I assign it because I think it's valuable. Do it - re do it - master it. Yes, it's work for me. Worth it.
A5: Adults get the chance to "redo" a lot. But, somethings can't be re-done. What if we traded "redo" for "let's practice" ?
A5 HOW is the work being redone? Your answer to that question sends a loud message on what is important. Tough one
A5. The learning comes from the process and reflection, allowing Ss the opportunity to try again fosters the development of grit
yes! If the admin isn't willing to make the change or lead their staff it is very difficult
Opps... There I get excited when typing.
A5: I'm glad Henry Ford allowed himself to redo his work. The Model A was definitely not his best work.
A5: Love it--resubmit anything, anytime. Also love Google tools for frequent real-time feedback during writing process.
A5: Mixed on this 1. How long is too long 2 redo work? Can you give a new assignment that reteaches skills? Highschoolteacherprobs
Yes Yes! Saw this and made me stop not only as a teacher, but also as a parent of a toddler! https://t.co/6NES5w08Ye
A5: 20 years ago, I had a HS Chem. teacher who gave me as many chances as I needed to show my learning. Changed my life.
A5: Legitimate reason work not done when due? Have a fair policy but some assignments need timeliness. Don't close doors on kids
A5: not sure if I let my Ss redo it. I ask them why we struggled and do it better - changing how they learn it so it sticks
Good questions. https://t.co/8P7GrN6lUL
A5: Mixed on this 1. How long is too long 2 redo work? Can you give a new assignment that reteaches skills? Highschoolteacherprobs
A5: Redo opportunities show Ss that you believe they can do it!
A5 We are showing them that it's ok to settle for possibly less than their best. By not allowing redoing we lose growth mindset
A5: In my class, if a S can try again and improve, they are growing as artists! In life, extra effort goes a LONG way!
A5: again relating to science...no experiment (or assignment) is a failure...it's just once step closer to the actual answer
Shoutout to the Godfather! Welcome back ! https://t.co/Xxn0ecl4BE
A5: not sure if I let my Ss redo it. I ask them why we struggled and do it better - changing how they learn it so it sticks
And embracing those Ts when they join https://t.co/7wERnRInmj
A4: Those who think they don't want to change, can still be empowered to become actively part of the movement.
A5 We have to help our students realize that when we do something it's worth putting in 100% effort & taking pride in their work!
A5: accountability is so important we need to teach them to be accountable and persevere to become a better person and learner
If learning is a constant state of iteration how can we ever put a cap or time limit on "mastery?"
agree in sentiment...don't do your work regularly, see if you keep job.
I think this mindset teaches Ss to play the game. Felt that way as a Ss, so how can I expect my Ss not to feel that way.
A5: I think it relates to revising writing. As stated, we are never done in a world that is never done
couldn't agree more, we commonly get those chance in our jobs so why not instill this in Ss & develop awareness early
A5. This helps develop a growth mindset for Ss who may need to work a little harder than others. Shows them Ts believe they can
A5: Happy we encourage do-overs when learning to walk. Need 2 have arms reached out excitement.
we all learn from our mistakes and struggles and become stronger
A5: Mixed feelings. We want Ss to learn from mistakes, but quality work to begin with...you don't always get do-overs in real life.
A5-so glad I get the opportunity to redo, bad lessons, mistakes I've made
A5: This, to me, is a great rationale for standards based grading. It's also a key component in project-based learning.
I think if we show importance of quality work but allow for failure Ss will take the risk to try.
AMEN! Do you ever catch yourself saying "YOU ARE 10 YEARS OLD!" then thinking "She is 10 years old..."
https://t.co/oUpo15xTA5
Yes Yes! Saw this and made me stop not only as a teacher, but also as a parent of a toddler! https://t.co/6NES5w08Ye
Right along with that train of thought. When do you let a student experience failure?
Wow!! Great energy and discussion tonight! Thanks KS educators! Looking forward to all chats this summer!
good point - but if we view school & learning as "teachable moments", there are opportunities for these discussions
It is important to take pride in what we do. If mistakes are made, we should have the opportunity to learn from them.
Deb is the teacher in our school who introduced me to ! Together we will move social media mountains!
Thank you !! Stay connected!! Have a great summer!!
