If you are a bilingual educator, we encourage you to participate in the #DualLangChat and begin to grow a strong bilingual educator professional learning network (PLN). Amazing things happen when you connect with teachers who share similar interests and passions.
A1. @ #AUHSD it’s a 50/50 secondary DLI model w/ JH 3 classes r n Spanish; @ HS 2 classes r n Spanish; the 2 JH/HS Pathways are not exactly the same in regards to the classes that are delivered in Spn; Ss, heritage spkrs r allowed to test into DLI n JH... #DualLangChat
We use the biliteracy unit framework to create our curriculum. We do not use basals. Our units reflect our students experiences, current and ongoing social issues. We also integrate art and technology. Our BUFs are living documents that we change and reflect on constantly.

A2. R #AUHSD JH & HS r full of amazing T leaders who go way above & beyond: DLI parent advisory, DLI field trips, celebrations, museo, mariachi, ballet folklorico, travel abroad, community service, civic engagement, go 2 feeder DLI elem sites to read stories & more #DualLangChat
K-5 integrated biliteracy units (social studies/ LA in one language, science/LA in the other), math changes language every week. Biliteracy time in both languages everyday. #DualLangChat

A2 We plan and reflect together in order to bring student interests and community assets into our activities and lessons. Bilingual school staff make an effort to speak Spanish to students to foster language development. We have many family events throughout year
#duallangchat While some may not believe it’s ‘fair’ that some may get ‘more’-it certainly is equitable that the resources be distributed based on student/program need. In fact, we currently do not have enough DL PD available-am area that is being worked on currently.
Movie nights, chalk festival, Día de los muertos, ongoing weekly Homework club put on by our two organizations PTA and ALL (Advocates for Language Learning)
#duallangchat A3 We do not order new materials in English unless the equivalent (preferably authentic, but at the minimum a good quality translation) is available in Spanish. Also, extra $ goes to Spanish texts since English materials are so plentiful.
A3. This is an imp point I think many prog struggle w/ because we all want more 4 r DLI prog. Lucky 4 #AUHSD DLI r Sup @michaelmatsuda & BOT strongly support DLI & biliteracy. So it’s n r LCAP & n the site SPSAs. We follow Brown Act.Try 2 go above & beyond 4 prog. #DualLangChat
A1: We strive to follow the TWI model so as to promote the prestige of Spanish. It is very important for both languages to have equal status. Our curriculum reflects that. Bilingual classified staff is very valuable to achieve this goal. #duallangchat
#duallangchat A4 Spanish is home lang for majority of Ss at our school, but we have many that are hesitant to read and speak in Spanish in upper. All grade levels encourage ss to take risks in both languages in and out of the classroom and integrate quality dual lang resources
#duallangchat With the idea of translanguaging in mind I think it’s important to acknowledge that the students’ multilingualism is always working in a sort of innate unison and as such I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily ‘equal’ but organically appropriate.
#duallangchat A4 celebration of bilingualism and focus on bilingual identity building in the first 6 weeks of school. All hallway displays bilingual. Morning announcements in 2 languages. Both languages used in PDs. Strict separation of Lang in classroom except during Bridge.
A3: We just adopted @BenchmarkEdu at #CVESD. CVESD made sure that we had equitable resources for both English and Spanish. Finally, quality stories in Spanish. #duallangchat
A4: We started saluting the flag in Spanish (school wide). We are true to amount of minutes and believe in separation of languages during our instruction! If not, kids will wait to hear it in their lang! No self contained! #duallangchat#CVESD
A3: Availability and funding for equitable resources are issues many DL programs have to deal with. If there is funding, we must be vigilant that the materials are of high quality. I feel that publishing companies are getting better.

A4 The #AUHSD DLI prog allocate at least 50% (which is two classes @ secondary level) to Spanish delivery. We have Pathway to Biliteracy Awards at JH & Seal of Biliteracy Awards at HS. Presentations for events r n both languages, etc. #DualLangChat
A5 Part of our beginning of the school year pd is dedicated to role playing so teachers can practice being advocates for their students, the program, and DL in general. Teachers deliver info sessions to prospective parents. #duallangchat
DLI Principal @RafaPlascencia6 (excellent leader & mentor) is n the #DualLangChat house! So great how we r learning from each other n the comfort of r homes...or wherever! @ACSAXVII#acsa

#duallangchat
We start the year with SMART goals related to core content and language acquisition. We constantly engage in backwards planning and reevaluate our use of newly adopted curriculum and pacing to best meet needs of the students. Weekly staff PLC and team planning
A6 #DualLangChat worked at Salt Creek where we had an external reviewer in the budget worth every penny. Validated strengths and gave constructive insights

A6: Totally necessary in order for a program to evolve. Too many programs are stuck in the 90's. Technology an innovation is key!!! #duallangchat#CVESD
