#NHCSchat is a monthly twitter chat for, about and by educators in New Hanover County, North Carolina. #NHCSchat is an opportunity for teachers, administrators and other educators in southeastern NC to grow and develop their personal learning network (PLN) by connecting to other educators in our district and around the world. This monthly chat will create a forum for NHCS educators to gather virtually around the common interest of providing the best possible learning experience for students in our district. Chat topics will vary but will focus on best practices for teaching and learning in the digital age and will be moderated primarily by NHCS educators.
Tell us about yourself...Your name, school & what you teach - and one thing that is still on your summer "to-do" list! Don’t forget the hashtag! #NHCSchat
I'm Jeannie, a Digital Teaching & Learning Specialist with NHCS and one thing still on my summer "to-do" list is take the middle child to get his driver's license...finally. #NHCSchat
A1. I am would like to find a school that would like to try out Apple's Classroom and Schoolwork. Game changers for iPads. #nhcschathttps://t.co/PcuACgoYSM
A1: At the #leadingschools summit I attended in June, I had the chance to explore coding & creating with @SAMLabs - definitely looking forward to learning more about these kits this upcoming school year! #NHCSchat
A1. I read Reading Unbound and participated in the #bicoastalbookclub with @jeannietimken and @jenniferlagarde. Fake Reading is HUGE. Ss need to self select the books they read and the adults shouldn't impose judgement on their choices. #NHCSchat
A1: At the last meeting of this year's #NCDLCN cohort in June, we explored the importance of the physical learning space & even had the chance to design our visions using this tool: https://t.co/alEI5pnvKk - I will encourage others to use this tool as they dream BIG! #NHCSchat

A2: To help students distinguish fact or fake, we must equip them with the skills & tools to identify bias and misinformation. We have to teach and model the critical thinking skills needed to assess credibility of information. #NHCSchat
A2: At #ISTE2018@shareski had us play a round of #Kahoot about various forms of both real & fake information online- it was a great way to foster a discussion about what seems honest and what we think may be false #NHCSchat
Q2: As educators, we have a responsibility to explicitly teach students how to evaluate authenticity of resources in a digital world. We need to model this process for them, discuss it openly and engage them in the conversation. #nhcschathttps://t.co/5VyBjZ0LxP
A2: We can have ongoing conversations with our students and teach strategies that can help distinguish what is real and fake online. In addition, we can use scientific thinking to determine whether resources they find are fake news #NHCSchat
A2 “The skeptic does not mean him who doubts, but him who investigates or researches, as opposed to him who asserts and thinks that he has found.”
― Miguel de Unamuno #NHCSchat
A2: Students will learn to tell the difference between real and fake news by analyzing the content and source of each page. This is a skill that needs to be taught. #NHCSchat
A2 I think we need to teach students to think more critically and we have to teach news literacy at every age. This means teaching them how to check sources and to push back and challenge ideas. #notatiste18#NHCSchat
A2: This is a great reminder to share with students and refer to often...maybe even combine it with an activity that provided several pieces of "news" for them to evaluate - both online & print. #NHCSchat
There is a lot you can do with 3D printing instruments and bringing them alive with @makeymakey I have a Maker Makey ukulele and a 3D printer piano #NHCSchat

I had my students look up stuff on Wikipedia that i already knew was incorrect. The 5th graders were shocked that people could post things online that weren't factual.
#NHCSchat
A2: This fall, @iste has a new book by @dhudgins & @jenniferlagarde coming out that is full of ideas for helping learners understand and identify fake news... Fact vs. Fiction:
Teaching Critical Thinking Skills in the Age of Fake News https://t.co/DaK0v0FEMr#NHCSchat

A2 I like to have students look at incomplete or incorrect tutorials online and make new ones to show how it is suppose to be. Sharing knowledge is important #NHCSchat
A3: There is so much that teachers can learn from other teachers & at #traskmiddle we work closely with our PLCs which helps foster innovation as we learn form one another #NHCSchat
A3. Reflection is a big part of growing and being better today than you were yesterday. Knowing that you don't have to get it perfect the first time, takes the pressure off trying new things. #NHCSchat
A3: I love how @tarheelscpl models what she wants teachers to do. Leading by example. If we want teachers to take risks, we have to take those risks too!. And, teachers have to feel safe taking risks and know they have support. #nhcschat

A3: Innovation THRIVES in a culture that supports creativity, curiosity, and community....among other things. Next month's #NHCSchat will dig deeper into this very topic!! (more on that later)
Yes!! It will be interesting to see how we will have to "up our game" @scott_andersen1 since Ss have had previous @breakoutEDU experience in 6th grade! #NHCSchat
In reply to
@misskatyleo7, @michaelteacher, @scott_andersen1, @breakoutEDU
A3. Another great image to illustrate the importance of culture. If you are not "tending" to the culture of your school then it is disintegrating and you may not be aware. #notatiste18#NHCSchat
A3 we have several teachers , @heatherbmaguire@BethWhittingto2@erinlynn24 who are always doing innovative things in their classes. Then they share through social media and are always willing to share or help #NHCSchat

A4. Establishing relationships with Ss empowers them to take risks. They must feel safe to leave their comfort zone. That's when transformation can happen. #NHCSchat
Q4: Ss need to feel comfortable & confident in what they are learning & providing student choice throughout the entire learning process gives Ss the power to take control of their education & fosters learner agency #NHCSchat
A4: I am looking forward to seeing more personalized learning at #traskmiddle where students are given more choice and more opportunities to create #nhcschat
A4: Research indicates that learner agency may be as important an outcome of schooling as basic skills! We can empower learners to be actively responsible for their own learning through activities allowing choice and encouraging inquiry. #NHCSchat
A4 Thanks @nmangum for sharing this image & for teaching us that learner agency can be developed through growth mindsets, self-efficacy, relevance & purpose, social belonging, goal setting and management, focusing on meta-cognition and social capital. #NHCSchat#notatiste18

A4: Establishing a relationship with students is key. Also, be honest and share times when you have had to struggle - it helps them to relate when they are struggling. in my class, mistakes are expected and students are encouraged to reflect on what was learned.

A5: I've gotten into #sketchnoting recently - can be great for engaging students during their learning, especially when they do not like traditional notes #NHCSchat
I’m going to do more small ensembles is class so Ss have to make musical decisions on their own and collaborate together and do not have me conducting them #NHCSchat
Q5: I am SO excited to use digital #socraticseminars this year! Socratic seminars already promote real-life learning in SO many ways & making them digital will add a significant #digitalcitizenship component! #NHCSchat
Q5: I learned about @PrintFriendly at #iste18. It is so simple, yet so helpful! You can make any web page Print Friendly & PDF to save paper and improve the presentation. Great tool for students and staff! #nhcschathttps://t.co/am6HSOCAXx

A5: I have become fascinated with getting student to CREATE their own VR experiences. Last year, I used @Panoform & @TheRoundme and now am exploring the capabilities of Google for this... https://t.co/3200WEcO4X#NHCSchat
A5 Heard a lot more about how Flipgrid and BookSnaps are being used with student & even though I do not use them I am going to be promoting with teachers during my classroom visits. #nhcschat#notatiste18
A5: i am eager to learn more about 360 cameras to create innovative lessons and using add-ons for Google Slides to make them personalized and interactive. i learned so much at #ISTE2018#NHCSchat
Exactly! I love #sketchnotes - creating them helps me make sense of what I read, notes I took, etc. It can hold the same power for students, too! #NHCSchat
A5: Virtual reality & augmented reality are evolving technologies.
What our students experience now with these tools will be undoubtedly better in their future. Using VR & AR expands upon the world they live in now and open doors for their future. #NHCSchat
A5 Also interested in learning more about https://t.co/FJmK2DxGj2 which focuses on the science behind how books are created. Heard a great presentation from the author of Artemis and The Martian Andy Weir #notatiste18#NHCSchat

A new digital tool I plan to use this school ear is https://t.co/ezCNtfjjFH. I love how you can customize the pace students' answer questions and give them an opportunity to reflect and reevaluate their responses. Add real-life videos to enhance engagement to tasks.#nhcschat
But make sure you have multiple options. Not every student wants to be video recorded or hear their voice. All students to choose the best tool for them #NHCSchat
A6: Engage parents in the learning process by introducing them to tools being used in the classroom. Invite them to view their child's portfolio on SeeSaw and communicate with parents in Dojo. Have a STEM night for parents to try out digital tools! #NHCSchat
A6: One of my favorite tools to use to communicate with parents is @RemindHQ because you can easily send text messages that go right to parents' phones #NHCSchat
A4: Research indicates that learner agency may be as important an outcome of schooling as basic skills! We can empower learners to be actively responsible for their own learning through activities allowing choice and encouraging inquiry. #NHCSchat
A6 At the #ditchthetechbook session they discussed bringing in the parents and teaching them the tools. This makes it safe for parents and gets them connected to what their students are learning. #notatiste18#NHCSchat
A6: an idea from ISTE18. Parent night with parents logging into kids Google accounts to see student work. Parents can also learn a new tool such as Flipgrid and leave message for child. #NHCSchat
I was just thinking that I'd love to find a way to show parents what the students are doing and share some of the tools they use. This is a great idea! #nhcschat
Yes!! And you can create a #BookSnaps with a picture and Google Drawings, both of which a majority of our Ss and ALL of our schools have access. @TaraMartinEDU#NHCSchat
A7: We can intrinsically motivate students by helping them become self-directed make ability to reach goal possible. Also have students work to develop a plan to conquer (helps to see what gets accomplished/next steps are) #NHCSchat
A7. Ss need to feel success in order to develop intrinsic motivation. Make sure Ss leave class everyday feeling success. Meet them at their level and then push them to go further. #NHCSchat
A7: Intrinsic motivation comes from within- as Ts we have to inspire our Ss to want to overcome challenges & trust themselves to succeed. Read more about intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation here: https://t.co/HwRf7xQs1S#NHCSchat
Q7: I think the best way to intrinsically motivate students is to make sure that you know your students. Build relationships with them. Talk to them. I am excited to incorporate @thrively (from #iste18) to get to know their "why." #nhcschathttps://t.co/ndLgJSQU6S
A7: We can foster intrinsic motivation through getting to know our learners. Identify their interests and use that to reach the where they are and help them move forward and grow! I once took a grammar lesson to the basketball court to help make the content stick. #NHCSchat
A7 Developing learner agency is a great way to develop intrinsic motivation in ss. It ensures social belong, relevance and purpose along with self-efficacy. It also supports a continuum of student voice and we all want to be heard. Thanks again @nmangum for sharing #nchschat
A8: Google provides SO many ways that Ts can take on both the role of a partner & a facilitator. From leading expeditions with @GoogleARVR to using #GoogleClassroom to provide feedback to Ss, the options are endless #NHCSchat
A8: Use of technology allows Ss to explore topics on their own and share what they have learned without relying on Ts. Tech can also help Ss create products! #NHCSchat
A8 @Catlin_Tucker I think does a great job of this and shares those resources in her blog and books. Worth checking out and following #notatiste18#NHCSchat
A8: Google provides SO many ways that Ts can take on both the role of a partner & a facilitator. From leading expeditions with @GoogleARVR to using #GoogleClassroom to provide feedback to Ss, the options are endless #NHCSchat
A8 I am strictly stick the idea of being a co-learner in the classroom. I definitely not the sole source of content. I learn new things all the time. #NHCSchat
Exactly! And, the teacher doesn't have to know how to do everything. I show Ss the basics and them let them figure out the rest. Once they know how to use a tool, I get them to show their classmates #NHCSChat
Absolutely! We did that at @MyrtleGroveMS in the spring, right @BlissCyndy - it was such a positive experience we did something similar during lunch on Day 1 of Summer Institute in June! #NHCSchat
Q9: I think that it is important to provide student choice in how they learn. They need to be provided options for practice and mastery. In the long run, this will help them to be better students and learners. #nhcschat
A9: Give Ss choice boards, a variety of options to learn and demonstrate mastery. Can have students pitch how they want to show what they've learned and approve it. Don't limit it to tests, papers, lectures! #NHCSchat
A9: An easy way to help personalize learning is to allow choice in path and product by using something as simple as a hyperdoc. https://t.co/DhffzhhiNM#NHCSchat
A10 We have to create a risk taking culture that rewards and celebrates failures just as we do successes. We have to be willing to move out of our comfort zones and let the magic happen #NHCSchat#notatiste18
A10: We can continue to motivate our students and fellow educators to keep trying by making positive comments/observations. Give encouragements as well. #NHCSchat
A10: Ts should constantly work to show Ss that there is always more than one way to solve problems. #STEM based projects have proven to be an extremely effective way to accomplish this #NHCSchat
But we also have to be willing to ensure that every student has access to the rigor of the grade level standard. We don't want to handicap students in either way. #nhcschat Strong advocate for standards based grading @tarheelscpl
A10: Specific, timely, and actionable feedback is super important to help any learner grow. It is easy to feel overwhelmed by a failure or two, and allow them to stack up, when you have no idea how to tackle turning them into successes. #NHCSchat
So important that we highlight that process as well. Ts should not just showcase perfectly finished work from Ss around our classrooms- we should be showcasing the entire process #nhcschat
A10: Specific, timely, and actionable feedback is super important to help any learner grow. It is easy to feel overwhelmed by a failure or two, and allow them to stack up, when you have no idea how to tackle turning them into successes. #NHCSchat

I always ask my Ss to "show me" how I can do something better. That builds trust. Ts shouldn't be insecure about asking Ss to show them how to do something. Generally, it's faster than a Youtube video. :)
