Please join us for a weekly conversation about design thinking in K12 education. We will have a variety of moderators with a wide range and depth of design thinking experiences. Each week, we will connect the dots to the design thinking methodology and how it can and will play a bigger role in today’s K12 educational arena.
A1: Very recently I was explaining how coworkers were coming to me with a problem and my contribution to the conversation was dismissed, as in no, that's not really a problem :/ #dtk12chat
A1: unfortunately the arts & visual arts are often marginalized in education, there have been many times the art perspective isn’t heard b/c it’s isn’t tested #dtk12chat
A2: In all honesty my initial reaction was I won't try and speak with that person again. I know, however that would not be productive so I considered my approach. #dtk12chat
My thoughts on art: Visual literacy -> print literacy via discussion and slowly removing scaffolding. Ss decipher text via skills learned through visual literacy #dtk12chat

Being an innovation director or STEAM manager is a challenging position. It takes the right amount of empathy, patience mixed with assertiveness and activator #dtk12chat
Standards-based grading makes so much sense to me. For those of you who have implemented SBG at the secondary level, what has been the greatest benefit and biggest challenge you’ve encountered? #tlap#kidsdeserveit#ditchbook@GTeacherTribe#dtk12chat#ohedchat
I have a strong personality to begin with (ENTJ in da house) so I need to slow down, soften my voice sometimes and help others with their journey to get on board. #dtk12chat

It’s also been really a life-journey to explore the dynamics of power and privilege as a school leader and to commit to equity in all we do. #dtk12chat
A4 The stage of empathizing is integral. I see this as the absent piece in a majority of conversations that are not productive. People tend to jump right to the solution. It's not enough to understand your view of the problem, you MUST understand from all perspectives. #dtk12chat
#dtk12chat letting Ss have the basic fundamental voice and choice and personalizing learning for them is equitable. Not all Ss need or are engaged by the same things.
A5 Design thinking and equity go hand in hand. There is no way I could create equitable math experiences for all my students without thoroughly thinking through and honoring each stage of the process. I love getting input from the source too-makes for great ideas! #dtk12chat
#dtk12chat excited to pilot new tools to help us create equitable, engaging and excellent learning experience that are personalized, rigorous and relevant!
Every student has a voice regardless of GPA, how wealthy they are or where they live. They all become designers and have strengths to contribute to a project. #dtk12chat
1) Finding the examples of 'competence'. 2) On one side, small steps for one kids is the same as a giant leap for another 3) differentiating between competencies when the new curriculum has the same language for gr..10, 11, and 12. #dtk12chat

A6 When T input is valued and heard. When teachers and administrators work together to design policy and practice that is right for both T & S. Moves everyone forward. #dtk12chat
