A1 I want to help my students find their voices, to know that they have a voice, to give them a platform for their voices to be heard. #oklaed#reThinkELA
A1 - My why is to create lifelong learners as an effort to contribute to a more informed and engaged citizenry by emphasizing historical thinking skills while also seeking to create a meaningful connection with students #oklaed.
A1: Our children will never live in the 20th century. We cannot continue to educate them pretending that the skills and knowledge they need are the same as when we went to school. #oklaed
A1) My passion is creating environments where positive relationships are fostered, children flourish through authentic learning experiences, the community is engaged through a collective responsibility, and teachers grow through instructional risk-taking. #oklaed
A1: my why is Bc I know I am the only chance some of my Ss have. Last yr it was someone else. Next yr it will be the next teacher. This year it’s me. When they come to me it’s my time to make a difference in their life and help them realize their path. #oklaed
A1) 30 years in public schools and still seeking My Why. Just a chance to make a difference for our 3000 students and 350 employees that have constant and ever changing needs. #oklaed
A1: If you don’t know why you do what you do, you will never change the world through your vision, because your vision doesn’t exist. #KnowYourWhy#oklaed
A1: why or what? My what is my purpose; to provide life changing educational opportunities for my Ss- why? Because the future of the world depends on it! We need to be different to become different. If you stay the same you become extinct #oklaedhttps://t.co/yAHVyZ6ORG
A1 my Ss deserve someone who is going to fight for them, educationally, socially, emotionally. My Ss deserve a T that wants the best for them and I try to give them that daily. #oklaed
A1 - My "why" is hearing the words from a student early in my career "Mrs. G, people like me don't graduate, they end up in jail." I fight, improve on my skills, advocate, and work my tail off so that won't be a reality for another student. #oklaed
A1) My why is so that Ss might have opportunities like I got through music. One of my Ss now marches in the Pride at OU and has gotten go to some amazing places as a freshman! From the cow pasture to that in a year! #oklaed
A1)To help students understand the amazing potential they have despite their challenges, but more importantly to make sure the other adults in their lives see that as well!!!!!!!!! #oklaed
A1: My why is to grow leaders, both student and adult - #leadership is not something you're born with, nor can it just be taught; it's a combination that requires modeling and mentoring #oklaed
A1) My personal why is to provide our students experiences that will help them become learners for life. To find the skills that will help them succeed. #oklaed
A1 life is better when we work together as a community. Communication skills are a big part of that, including rhetoric and creative self expression. #oklaed
A1: My why is that all students deserve our best. All students need and deserve the best we have to offer and it's our job to show them why they matter! #OklaEd
A1 The why is our vision to instill the love of learning within each student, teacher & support employee in our school organization. Loving to learn! #sequoyaheagles#comesoarwithus#Oklaed
A1 My personal WHY in teaching is “Why is this important to student learning. I still laugh when I remember Rick Cobb challenging me about WHY I wasn’t teaching my students to Google. BTW, Rick, I do now a lot! #oklaed
A1: My "why": Teaching is not a job. It may be a profession...but to me, it's a lifestyle. To define it, is to limit it. I want to be a part of the solution and not add to the problem. That's my "why?" #oklaed
#oklaed A1: It's time to redesign education to fit the different paths that our Ss may take. Can an English class work with a science class? Of course! Can an English class be part of a job shadowing or internship? Sure, it can! @elonmusk
Every year, I think of a Ss I love and a Ss I wish was absent. I think of what traits I want both of them to have and then structure my class to fulfill it. #oklaed
A2: Leader is a position. Those who lead do so by inspiring action from those around them. There may be only one ‘leader’, but everyone has the right and ability to LEAD. #oklaed
A2) Leaders have a position. Those that lead have inspired someone to be a part of something regardless of formal position. Servant-leaders are usually granted "those that lead" #oklaed
A2: Those who can lead get things done, but not for the long haul. Effective leaders are the kind that their names live beyond their yrs of leadership. #oklaed
A2: This is the difference between positional leaders and functional leaders. Functional leaders can be at any level with any title, and any age. #OklaEd

A2: there are those that have the job title. Then there are those that actually lead. A good leader isn’t afraid to speak up, buck the system, is accountable, inspires their team to be their best. #oklaed a leader by job title sits at their desk and doesn’t form relationships.
A2) Leaders have a vision and find the ways to help staff achieve the vision. Those who lead will take all to the end without any real growth along the way. #oklaed
A2: The "leader" is the one who barks orders and is ineffective for the majority of the workforce. The "one who leads" actually takes an active role in what is going on in the workplace, getting his or her feet in the trenches with his or her people. #oklaed
A2 - Some have a title and may or may not take people somewhere. True leaders have a clear vision of where they are going, how to get their, and inspire people to follow them. #oklaed
A2: The best leaders are genuine, they will never ask those they lead to do something that they would not do themselves. Also you have to take ownership of everything, if something goes wrong it's your job to find a solution and not just pass down the blame. #Oklaed
A2) a leader is someone who simply holds a position or title. Those who lead have to motivate and inspire and take time to form relationships with others in order to empower them. #oklaed
A2 - Leaders inspire, challenge, have a vision, and do what has to be done to achieve what is best for Ss. Some who leads is simply a person with a title. #oklaed
A2 - Some have a title and may or may not take people somewhere. True leaders have a clear vision of where they are going, how to get there, and inspire people to follow them. #oklaed
A2: I have found people who lead always have people who follow them. This is regardless of age, race or religion. They draw people and they help them to be better #oklaed
A2 #oklaed this is classic public education. There are those who are put in charge, have a loud voice, know the right people. And then there are leaders. Those whose main goal is cultivate growth and relationships in followers not just get the job done.
In reply to
@MrsBeck25, @bridgestyler, @mcappsparks, @mac_sra, @SethMeier
A2: A good leader is one who is willing to demonstrate, to model, to be willing to get their hands dirty and to inspire others to follow their lead. #Oklaed
#oklaed A2: Everyone can be a leader; just go out and do it! For some people, it's easy; for others, it's more difficult. Decide what and how you want something done and go for it!
A2) There are leaders by title only and then there are leaders who are effective, empowering, and exemplify what #leadership really is. The lift those around them and build other leaders whether they are Ts, Ss, or As. #oklaed
A2: I find that good leaders are ones who know when to lead, know when to follow, and know when to get the hell out of the way. Have to know your craft but adaptability is critical. #oklaed
A2: Leaders are willing to vulnerably say "I don't know," to ask lots of questions, to be wrong & acknowledge it, to lay out a vision & let others reshape it and even take it over. #oklaed
A2) One is a noun--it's who they are, their inmost being is a leader. One is a verb--they're simply action, it's just something they do among other things. #oklaed
A3 Authenticity, passion, caring more about the vision than yourself, enabling others to take the vision and make it theirs/make it even better #oklaed
In reply to
@SethMeier, @bridgestyler, @MrsBeck25, @mac_sra
A2. We don't need more followers, Its easy to be a follower. Get on any band wagon o join any mob There r plenty of followers Following is easy Being a ldr dsnt mean being in charge, bossing ppl around
B-ing a ldr is doing the right thing because its the right thing to do #oklaed
A3: a visionary leader has their eye on the future. Isn’t set in their ways. Has progress and change always on their mind and isn’t afraid of change. Realized schools can’t be ran the same way every year. #oklaed
#OklaEd A2: I think we lead when facilitate our students’ taking ownership / control of their learning (so I guess that’s kind of following too). Too many educators follow when they seek to get / use the lessons and mandates offered or mandated by others!!!
A3: They have to have vision - as in be able to plan worthwhile goals, stay on track, and pull others on to the positive track they are creating as they go, all while allowing feedback to adjust that path by others who see farther ahead. #Oklaed
A3: A visionary leader needs to be able to see what others do not. They need to show their people they are valued. From my experience, people quit bad leaders, not jobs. #oklaed
A3: Being able to check your ego and truly listen to those you lead. Putting people in a position to be successful. Making sure your number one goal is to never put yourself in a position to take from those you lead. #Oklaed
A3) authentic, passionate, is able to articulate the vision and the why, knows when to adjust and take risks, builds relationships and listens to stakeholders... #oklaed
A3) A visionary leader is one who is able to see the barriers, listen to others, willing to admit when wrong, is able to correct course, and see where the vision leads. #oklaed
I think a visionary leader also realizes they don’t have all the answers so they are open to ideas from their team. #oklaed if you care about the vision of your school, you won’t need to control all ideas and changes.
A2 If you are lucky, those with the title do lead. However, real leaders don’t need a title. They do what is needed whether it be to light a fire, make a way, or stand back and support. #oklaed
A3 Visionary leaders see the best in the people they serve, and they cultivate those qualities. They also get out of the way to allow their people to flourish. #OklaEd
A3 Someone who understands the complexities of the individual and the specific skills they have that will help the whole group accomplish the vision of the school/company #oklaed
A3: Someone who values the idea there is no limit for better. We MUST always be focused on improvement. You cannot improve without taking chances and being receptive to new perspectives. Have to be able to swim upstream and not tire. #oklaed
A3, the visionary leader can think outside the box and solve problems. Sadly, my experience has been that those in charge are not interested in outside the box and problem solving because it rocks the boat. I love true leadership! #OklaEd
Have to somewhat disagree. What I have learned by teaching leadership to HS Ss is they are so eager to be in charge they forget to follow. When Ss learn to follow, they learn to help where needed, listen to others & more. Being a follower, makes them stronger leaders #OklaEd
A2 as a teacher we had to be a leader to get the job done. But a good leader listens and pays attention to those he/she is leading and lets them have input. An effective leader has their finger on the pulse of those being lead. #Oklaed
A3 the ability to have a very wide perspective, almost seeing around corners & respects differences as strength and always willing to see the impossible as a challenge not a barrier. #oklaed
A4: If you don’t have a personal vision then you don’t know where you’re leading yourself. Before you can lead others, you need to lead yourself. #oklaed
A4: to know why we are here and where we are going. We might not be paid well, but there is a shortage. Go work with the visionaries in #oklaed Don’t stay at a visionless district.
A4: Have to know where you’re going to know when you get there. #oklaed Can’t teach today’s students with yesterday’s lessons and expect them to be ready for tomorrow. #BeRelevant
A4 #oklaed Without a personal vision, you just drift around with good attention, succumbing to every workshop and snake-oil salesman with a great plan to make school great again!
#oklaed A3: One who sees what could be, not afraid to try new ideas, reflective, and understands that even though an idea has always been done that way, it's time to redesign it to fit the next generation of Ss. I see it as backward planning like UbD; begin with the end in mind.
A4: If you watch what is happening right now, instead of focusing on the bigger vision, you'll think the stumbling blocks are roadblocks - and they'll feel like it. But looking ahead, you see the positive on its way and can bypass or step over the bumps #Oklaed
A3: Traits of a good leader: passionate, visionary, listener, callused elbows from working side-by-side, courageous, flexible, works to make others have success, raises the bar! My goodness, how many characters do we get on Twitter nowadays?! #Oklaed
A4: to know why we are here and where we are going. We might not be paid well, but there is a shortage. Go work with the visionaries in #oklaed Don’t stay at a visionless district.
A4) It is important to know my personal vision because if I don't then in the course of a year anything can change the flow or direction of the school causing confusion for both staff and students. #oklaed
A3: A visionary leader look towards the future, bringing ideas to her team, but knows her ideas can't stand alone. She lets her team lead, suggest, revise, & take ownership #oklaed
Yes, we often say we want students to be critical thinking problem solvers, but don't structure our schools to allow them to learn or practice that #oklaed
A3, the visionary leader can think outside the box and solve problems. Sadly, my experience has been that those in charge are not interested in outside the box and problem solving because it rocks the boat. I love true leadership! #OklaEd
A4: if I don’t know my own personal vision, I’m not ready to collaborate with a team to better my school. I am not ready to benefit my students if I don’t even have a vision of where I want my school to go. For my students sake I should always have a vision for progress. #oklaed
A4: to know why we are here and where we are going. We might not be paid well, but there is a shortage. Go work with the visionaries in #oklaed Don’t stay at a visionless district.
I get what you are saying. A leader doesn’t have to be The Lead in every situation and feels confident enough to let others shine. A leader isn’t the best at everything and adapts so the job gets done. That means they have to listen and know when to follow, too. #oklaed
A3: A visionary leader is a good listener, smart enough to surround themselves with talented people who share common goals, and willing to let others ideas help shape the direction of their own vision #Oklaed
A4 - If you aren't aware of your vision, you have no why/goal/target/relevance...I have to see the big picture to understand the steps it takes to get there. Otherwise, what am I doing? #oklaed
A4B: Because if you have to redo a component of your National Board Certification, the idea of quitting is compelling until you remember what you're doing it for in the first place. #oklaed
A4: You have to know what your vision is, that doesn't mean that everything goes as planned. But with a clear vision you can stay on track when unforeseen things happen. Also no one wants to follow someone who doesn't know where they are going. #Oklaed
A3: A ldr is someone who ensures the team is moving in the right direction then helps to move the pile forward. Whether they are infront of the pile, behind or in the middle #oklaed
A3) A visionary leader understands and communicates their vision well and looks beyond what is currently seen. If they are effective, they can not only communicate it, but develop others in persuit of it. #oklaed
Q4: Without vision, 2 roads will diverge into a yellow wood, and I'll take the wrong one. With vision I will take the one that makes all the difference! #Oklaed
#OklaEd A4: I know, I know ... I am signing off!!! With regard to personal, school, organization, ... visions, I cannot recommend any higher the book “Full Steam Ahead” by Blanchard and Stoner. To me, it’s a phenomenal resource!!!
A4: Knowing your personal vision is an element of self-awareness. Protect it, but but be adaptable. We need to be diligent that we don't sacrifice the greater good in service of our personal vision. #oklaed
A4: Vision gives you purpose. Helps you set attainable goals and big dreams. Its to easy to get lost and forget why you do what you do without a clear concept of who you are and where you want to go #Oklaed
#oklaed A4: When i first started teaching 27 years ago, I copied what other Ts did. After playing the game of copy and paste, I decided it was time to design my own path to follow, one that would be built around my Ss and what they need. It's not about a test; it's about them.
A4: You have to know what your vision is, that doesn't mean that everything goes as planned. But with a clear vision you can stay on track when unforeseen things happen. Also no one wants to follow someone who doesn't know where they are going. #Oklaed
A4, It still amazen me when I meet teachers who just don’t know... You must know or have a plan to discover. Leadership might be believing that even when you don’t know you WILL find a way. Ask questions! #OklaEd
A4. A leader must have a vision & make it known. Don't assume others know. It's very unsettling to your team if they're not clear what you want. #oklaed
A5: Be consistent - in the rules you enforce, papers you grade, respect you show your students, expectations for everyone around you, and everything about you as a teacher. Others will eventually get in line with you. #oklaed
A4. It is important to have a personal vision because it is to let others know where you stand and where you are going. It is the compass of this journey called leadership #Oklaed
A5: I ask myself, would I lose students with this? Will I kill any passions for learning? If the answer is no, I AM DOWN to teach...being students, teachers, or non-educator #oklaed
A5) By checking the decisions I make and the words I speak by my vision. For me, it can't just be something I say I do, it must be everything I do. #oklaed
A5) For me it's imperative to create lessons that implement literature with lessons and create connections to present day. #lessons#valueadded#relevancy#oklaed
A5: one of my visions for my school is no homework in any grade. Therefore, I don’t assign homework. I am kinda the lone wolf but I think it may catch on. #oklaed
A5: Your vision is your action filter. Run all actions and words through your vision, if they don’t align with the vision then you don’t do them. #oklaed
A5 - I seek out connections with students multiple times in a single class period. I structure my teaching to focus on the process & skills through the content, & I let students follow me on twitter and model being informed and engaged here. #oklaed
I highly recommend this article about @deanjimryan, currently Dean of @hgse: "If you ask enough questions & listen carefully to the answers, you’ll eventually have the answer to ‘What is your vision and what are your priorities?" https://t.co/7pDZlRRWsL#oklaed
A5 - Teachers/Admin/Leaders have to be reflective. To ensure I'm on the right path I constantly ask two questions:
1- Is my school a better place because I'm there?
2 - Is what I do in my classroom what I would want for my own child?
If the answer is no, I HAVE to change #oklaed
A5: My vision is a school where everyone is valued & everyone contributes to leadership, from the principal to the Ts to the Ss to the parents. #oklaed
A5: Like wearing a pair of glasses, to manage your vision you must view all major decisions through the same lens. Otherwise, your vision becomes fuzzy and you become susceptible to errors. A good vision keeps your mission clearly in view. #oklaed.
A5) Consistency and observing are the best ways to ensure that my vision is staying on course. Looking for ways to communicate my vision better is a method to keep my staff connected to my vision. #oklaed
A5 #oklaed Honestly, nobody hits the mark every single day. We all have to occasionally re-center our focus on what matters most. Sometimes my leadership #squad does that for me.
A5: @Stv_Gilliland nailed it! Reflection is the key. Why do you do what you do, does it meet your expectations, does it align with your vision, is it taking you the direction you want to go #Oklaed
A5: Your vision is your action filter. Run all actions and words through your vision, if they don’t align with the vision then you don’t do them. #oklaed
A5) Tattoo it on your forehead. When things aren't going well and you're tempted to blame others, look in the mirror. Psst...it might not be them. #oklaed
A5 I live the vision. I want my Ss to be communicators -- readers and writers, to share their voices. So that is what I do in my life, too. #oklaed#reThinkELA
#oklaed A5: I always plan my curriculum with the end in mind. What do i want my Ss to do at the end of the unit? What do i want them to accomplish by the end of the semester? How is that going to relate to what they do at the end of the year? Every idea is connected together.
A5: Be clear and focused. Take a moment to map out the Plan of the Day at the beginning and to reflect on what was accomplished and what still needs to be done at the end. #oklaed
Yes! Continually ask if a task is in service of the vision, while also reflecting on the vision to determine if it should be modified. Presumably most visions emphasize the impact on students; yet how often are decisions not filtered through this lens? #oklaed
A5: Like wearing a pair of glasses, to manage your vision you must view all major decisions through the same lens. Otherwise, your vision becomes fuzzy and you become susceptible to errors. A good vision keeps your mission clearly in view. #oklaed.
Pandit J.L. Nehru said, “The destiny of a nation is shaped in her classrooms.” The classrooms that these #oklaed teachers lead have a great destiny ahead of them.
A6) Surround yourself w/ honest people that will call you out when you aren't being authentic. This is where CULTURE helps to prevail the vision, regardless of the day-to-day. #oklaed
A6 #oklaed I'll be honest here. I don't. I move from task to task and respond to crisis calls and emergent needs. When I have a clear path, I get into schools and talk with the people closest to the kids.
A6 I seek out and surround myself with people who have the similar or complementary visions. I also look for people who are willing to kick my rear when it's needed. #oklaed I'm always looking for grains of truth to add to my vision.
A6) having mentors and educators that keep me accountable, participating in #oklaed chats! Support and encouragement is incredibly important to staying focused.
A6: I have to stay true to my vision Bc I know my Ss have a life outside my classroom. And socializing and being children is just as important as learning math. If I assign homework I feel like I’m more focused on the test. Blah! #oklaed
A6: Surround yourself with others that believe the vision just as you do. You can’t focus on something that is splintered around you.
A leaders hire A+ people. B leaders hire C people, C leaders hire D people, D people hire bozos. #oklaed
A6) Some days are tougher than others to stay true to my vision but taking time to reflect on what is happening, listening to my stakeholders, and thinking about what is best for students makes it worth the stress and time. #oklaed
A5 Find ways to remind yourself daily about your personal vision. Write it down, post it, integrate it into your Twitter profile. Reflect on it with trusted colleagues periodically. Ask for honest feedback and make appropriate adjustments. Listen to others. Pray. #OklaEd
A6: By having a team concept among your admin team and teachers. Try to surround yourself with those that make you the best version of yourself. It's easier to stay on track when your team knows they can be honest with you. #Oklaed
A6) I’m not gonna lie, it’s hard! You have to stay connected to your accountability network and build a team that is relentlessly focused on the vision! #Oklaed
A6) Using the 3 R’s I referred to in Q5 and implementing the results. Writing is also helpful and a discipline that I need to do a better job with. #oklaed
A6: I talk with those "supernatural forces" (my mentor teacher(s)) a.k.a. #MrsSearcy112 for guidance and feedback. By surrounding myself with those who are better than me, I become better. Thanks to everyone for all their support! #oklaed
A7 I take the pulse of my students enthusiasm for reading and writing. When they are enthusiastic, I know I'm doing what's right. When they aren't, I know something needs to change. #OklaEd
A6: Life interferes. Sometimes it's necessary to take a break. Step back catch your breath and refocus. if you don't occasionally take a moment, it will all overwhelm. Focus and Breathe #Oklaed
#oklaed A6: Be ready for problems and the roadblocks that may occur. What you have planned may not work, you may run out of time, or it may not be the right moment for the idea. Plan, design, implement, reflect, redesign, and do it over again.
A6: Lots of answers include accountability partners. I always had one as a corporate lawyer, often a younger direct report, empowered to keep me on track. Lots of "No, it can't wait until tomorrow, you said 'tomorrow' yesterday, and now it's today." #oklaed
A7 - I am blessed to work for a great superintendent that cares more about students and real learning than what is normally measured in education so I focus on teaching and fulfilling my vision. #oklaed
A7: Im going to think hard about this over break...I want my students curious about the world, they care about the grade bc thats what is measured. I want to find a way to measure and 'grade' their curiousity #oklaed
A6: If your vision is student centered, and your actions serve that same focus, then your actions AND reactions should reflect the attention to students needs in every instance. Your walk will reflect this mission. #Oklaed
Q7 If teachers love to teach & students love to learn & support employees love to serve...all that measuring gets whipped! Culture Matters #sequoyaheagles#comesoarwithus#Oklaed
A7) When people want to challenge systems, or promote a mind-set or process shift that aligns MORE with the vision. When people say it "feels different here" in a good way. #oklaed
A6 - I have teacher friends and admin friends who know my heart and will call me out when I'm not living up to my end - accountability is important. This job is HARD - it can be so easy to get lost in the day-to-day. #oklaed
A6: When I am doing something crucial to my vision, I close every tab on my laptop that's not relevant to the task and put my phone in another room. #oklaed
A7: Make it part of the yardstick you're using. The checkboxes of measurement can incorporate your vision: make sure every S finds one interesting book to read, check. Give Ss choice in research topic, check. #oklaed
A7) To be sure my vision is happening I need to be in classrooms daily, I need to talk with students daily, I need to listen to my teachers daily. The measurable stuff will get done but the unmeasurable needs to be observed. #oklaed
A8) I know I've mentioned him before but... Lee Roland was my principal at Tulakes, he was a true visionary leader, a servant leader, and lived by example #oklaed
One litmus test for inspiring curiosity in the classroom is the number of conversations you catalyze. I love using “curiosity links” for this! https://t.co/69kSyS23h8#OklaEd
Help them to understand how well their mindset changed, how well they attempted to understand others, etc. Sometimes we can turn qualitative into qualitative with self-reflection. #oklaed
A6 Leaders need a personal vision & a school vision. The two should be clearly connected, but school stakeholders should be involved in defining the school vision. Ownership lends to investment & fidelity. #oklaed
A8 - LBJ, he was prolific, had a vision, and got things done in a way few presidents ever did. There is a reason he is called the master of the senate. He knew what he wanted to accomplish and he went for it. #oklaed
A7- Honestly, I refuse to live in this environment. Data can be important, but it goes back to my reflection from Q5 - "Is this what I would want for my child?" I refuse to be the teacher who only worries about what can be measured. If I do, I am doing a disservice. #oklaed
A8: Will have to give it up to 2 admins that have changed the way I teach and lead... Shawn Blankenship and @coach57 You both have done more for me than you will ever know... #oklaed
See?! The roads diverged, and I took the one with Forrest running through the jungle to find Bubba (on TV). And I could have missed this! You, @grendelrick , have put us on the right road! #Oklaed
A8 #oklaed I spent seven years working alongside @romines1969 I can't count the things I learned. It starts with how to let people know they matter to me.
A7: Know your "non-negotiables" and ensure they are communicated and enforced throughout your school/district. Then, be visible. You can't promote an effective vision from your office. #oklaed
A7) You have to have others that believe in the end result. Fortunately, I am surrounded with amazing educators and a leader who cares and works with us. #oklaed
A7: Insepect what you expect! Collect feedback on your outings, conversations; and events. Value feedback and use it to drive future opportunities to share your schools vision. #oklaed
A7: If a student with an opposing opinion to the rest of the group feels empowered to speak up (while providing strong evidence), I know I’ve done my job. #OklaEd
A7: Students and Teachers should know what the vision is, so ask teachers and students if we are on track and are things headed where we want to go. Then dig deeper and find specific reasons for the answers they give. #Oklaed
