Interested in student-driven classrooms? Join Dr. Nancy Sulla @nsulla (author of Students Taking Charge, Its Not What You Teach But How, Building Executive Function: The Missing Link to Student Achievement, and more) and educators from all over in #LATICchat on Thursday nights at 8pm ET. We hope to bring together a community of educators to share insights, stories, examples, pictures from their classrooms, and more. We welcome all educators to join; no need to be running a #LATIC classroom.
Nancy Sulla here ... got my new headshot photo! Creator of the Learner-Active, Technology-Infused Classroom (#LATIC) ... ready to roll with #LATICchat.
A1 parents were taught how to live and work in the world. #LATIC teaches kids how to change the world and create one in which they want to live.

A1) Conv clsrms focus on T activity (lesson plans-what the T will do; objective on the board-what the T will address; front of the room-where the T sits) #LATIC is all about the Ss (Ss schedule time, sit where it makes sense; engages in activities they need.#LATICchat
A2) I like using the bridge metaphor ... it's structured to ENSURE you get to the other side ... and it's the MOST structured piece of roadway out there but doesn't always feel like it as you choose how to travel across. #LATICchat
#LATICchat Hi! This is Ms D! A1) My ALUs are designed to help my art students explore art concepts, then we can apply their understanding to new projects. I want students to understand that artmaking is about what artists choose to do with their knowledge.
A2 unfortunately you can't tell a parent that it is structured beyond explaining all the different structures, but that won't move a parent. What moves a parent is weeks into the year and kids are active in their learning and increasing executive functioning skills.

Might be fun to come up with a list of questions parents have (typically) and put them in one column.... and then answer in another column: "there's a structure for that..." #LATICchat
how do you run back-to-school nights? don't they see all the structures there? But I agree, the power is in parents seeing their students learning #LATICchat
#LATICchat A2) I would describe it as a a trail map: we all have different routes we take, but we all experience the same environment, just in our own way. A lot of real world offices are set up in a similar way, with an emphasis on personal accountability. Why not start early?

A3) Dr. Rick Saylor, principal at @CENMS tells a great story about this to parents recounting his felt need to learn how to replace a pool timer (YouTube vs a manual vs hiring help... he used YouTube).

Keeping a record with photos, videos and in-classroom updates for the parents on websites or blogs helps parents understand how you emphasize "process".
It is very interesting to see parents work inside the #LATIC structure. They are totally resistant to it because it goes against what they believe school to be. They love it for their kids but have trouble themselves in it.
A4 Here @SandersSMES we use our student led conferences to facilitate parent immersion in #LATIC. Parents work with their child to go through an activity list of sorts to go through their portfolio and the teacher is only facilitating. #LATICchat

A4) B-t-S night have Ss draw or write a metaphor to explain how #LATIC works ... have them leave their activity list, schedule, task, rubric, and their notes or progress for parents to see ... maybe write a letter to the parent about #LATIC#LATICchat
Q4: during our conferences I actually created an activity list that the parents had to follow to experience what their kids go through. They cannot believe that their child is capable of completing all the tasks and the tasks being quality!#LATICchat
A5) I see a lot of teachers using @RemindHQ and @ClassDojo ... and good old communication folders, journals, and agenda books! So many ways to communicate and keep the conversation open with parents. #LATICchat
A5 twitter has proven to be very powerful to exhibit media of students working in #LATIC. We also use @ClassDojo to keep parents up to speed on structures. @msonenote is also amazing because parents can see what kids are working on while at home. #LATICchat

A6 it is old school low tech but our student conference binders allows kids to make goals and keep track of them. That way students are setting the expectations of their parents. #ParadigmShift#LATICchat
A6) Maybe students could write their own checklists of what is expected of them in class, including how to appropriately use each of the structures. #LATICchat
A7 24 hour school! Learning and tasks don't stop once you leave the school. Making that partnership early is key to a productive home/school relationship.
#LATICchat
A7) There are many ways to build homework assignments around the ALU task that can involve parents ... interviews, brainstorming together, and more. #LATICchat
A7) I loved the opportunity to respond to a Google Form from a QR with questions about how my child learns... surveys, forms, and opening up dialogue in a variety of forms is key! #LATICchat
A8 How will this get them ready for the state test? Because #LATIC makes students apply their learning in a cross curriculum way that is far more rigorous than a test.
#LATICchat
A8) Parents used to ask me how students would acclimate to college ... but more colleges are more about student choice and voice ... and we still offer whole-group lessons and Ss take notes in SGMLs ... so it's all good! #LATICchat
Yes, that's always a question! Moreso because the tests are written in specific ways. So Ss might know the content but not know how to answer the test ... it's why in #LATIC we offer tests that look like the kinds of tests they'll encounter in life. #LATICchat

CQ the idea for this year I am trying is a brain break corner. They schedule time to relax and de-stress their minds. Similar to how companies are providing services to relax during the day to increase productivity.
