Hello #suptchat I'm Mike Lubelfeld, superintendent of schools in N. Suburban Chicago - Timeless leader is kind, has integrity, gives honest feedback and moves the organization forward
David Frusher; High School Principal; ZBTHS District 126; Joining in from Lake County, IL. I believe that a Timeless Leader is one that is not bound by constraints of clock time; and is driven by the Vision, Mission, and Values and Beliefs. #suptchat
Katie Algrim-director of innovative PL with Kane County ROE. Also on mom duty tonight so might be in and out tonight. Excited for the topic!! #suptchat
Good evening #suptchat - Jon Bartelt, Superintendent of Bloomingdale SD 13, and the timeless leader is the one who’s influence over others is always positive and strong.
A1: Time is a difficult concept for education. Proficiency is more important than time. But so many aspects of schools and youth are time-bound. #SuptChat
A1: How might we make learning more timeless for learners? Ask students for input - within the scope/sequence of content & standards - allow for interest/workshop model - school can be relevant and meaningful eg https://t.co/Kz80V0qRAX#suptchat
Kyle Thompson, Asst. Regional Superintendent for ROE 11, Charleston, IL. A timeless leader is one who is willing and able to adapt in an ever changing profession. #suptchat
Hello everyone. Jordan Decker. Not a supt but interested in education administration, leadership, and technology. Thanks for having back a 2nd time. #suptchat
A1: We could focus on standards attainment and move many Ss further along at an advanced pace. Ss that struggle could receive RTI supports immediately to meet their needs. Allowing for more flexibility in the curriculum, and not being bound by clock time. #suptchat
A1: By helping all learners understand that learning happens without deference to time - unlearning the concept of the school calendar and school day. #suptchat
A1: Listen to students and educators. Remove constraints of grades, bells, and tradition. Learners can learn anywhere, anytime, and anyway. #suptchat#MiddieRising
A1: we have so many boundaries that surround education. To create timeless students we need to think outside the bounds & make it happen WITH students. What do they envision and need??? A literal starting point - look at TIME as a concept. Do we really need bells now? #suptchat
A1 school is a process. I spoke with a supt. this week and he said his district focuses on skills. Another district @DrBTroop has a "Life Ready" program for all graduates. I agree, not a building but rather a process to discover content, dispositions, and life skills. #suptchat
think about learning before humans marked calendar time as we do today- learning was grounded in community, mentors, apprenticeship, modeling, story, active learning - #suptchat
A1: we have so many boundaries that surround education. To create timeless students we need to think outside the bounds & make it happen WITH students. What do they envision and need??? A literal starting point - look at TIME as a concept. Do we really need bells now? #suptchat
A2: Augmented reality would be far more prevalent - virtual connections with experts and classes around the world would be commonplace - experts would be in the classroom on a daily/hourly basis - school would be one to world #SuptChat
A2: I think that we could have more combined classes where disciplines from other departments could collaborate on projects & activities. Ss would learn how their disciplines are integrated & are part of a larger scope & sequence, not just in silos. #suptchat
A2: I think that we could have more combined classes where disciplines from other departments could collaborate on projects & activities. Ss would learn how their disciplines are integrated & are part of a larger scope & sequence, not just in silos. #suptchat
A1: By helping all learners understand that learning happens without deference to time - unlearning the concept of the school calendar and school day. #suptchat
makes so much sense in terms of learning that approximates success for life and not just school- how does the learning process become seamless vs controlled in silos that never touch each other #suptchat
A2: Students would have access to environments where they had 100% ownership. Teachers would igniters of passionate learners in these environments. What about a 3 hours portion of the school day from 4:00-7:00 pm? #suptchat#MiddieRising
we talk from our work together @irasocol@csratilff how educators shift learning power to learners and what looks different when that occurs - motivation, agency, influence #suptchat
A2: I think that we could have more combined classes where disciplines from other departments could collaborate on projects & activities. Ss would learn how their disciplines are integrated & are part of a larger scope & sequence, not just in silos. #suptchat
A3 Focus on possibility and getting past the "yes, but" by actively #listening and understanding potential ideas while empowering teachers to connect new ideas with frameworks such as a strong mission, vision and strategic plan. #suptchat
A3: Encourage everyone to dream big, and to think and live outside of the box. I believe it’s important to begin by working in a collaborative and supportive manner. Build trust! Start with what’s attainable right away, experience success together, and grow from there! #suptchat
A3: Getting beyond "yes, but..." starts at the top. The Superintendent, Admin Team, and School Board need to model and create a culture of innovation. #suptchat
In my state, it begins with a less emphasis on standardized testing. Allowing for a complete paradigm shift of what "success of learning" looks like. Also, as a leader, it's willing to be looked at as obtuse. Having courage to possibly compromise test scores. #suptchat
#suptchat A2: if we released the concept of time we would actually be preparing students for the real wold. Teaching them to manage their time and be responsible for their schedule and learning what works best for them and their lifestyle. #suptchat
A3: Using discussion protocols which prompt us to think differently (with really good additive and appreciative questions) and interact differently (less interrupting, sharing air time). It takes discipline to follow the structures, but the rewards are great. #suptchat
A3: Imagine a three-year period with no legislative mandates whatsoever. All educators could put more intellectual resources towards students/classrooms/schools. #suptchat
that is a challenge- because what kids learn when time isn’t a barrier, the dominant teaching wall isn’t the default, and their interests add context to what we adults think is of value to learn means taking risks and challenging status quo #suptchat
A3: Make collective commitments reflected in the DIP, SIPs, and within PLC’s. Foster conversations that don’t focus right away on cost and feasibility #suptchat
Developing and using common rubrics for reading and writing (everyone is a teacher of literacy - just within their discipline of expertise) is one way #suptchat
A3) we can listen to the “yes but” (not just hear it) - but we can also respond with how it could (hopefully) benefit the learner. I have learned that listening, not just hearing, offers depth and often reasoning behind the “but” or “why”. #suptchat
Q4: As we move from a Knowledge Age to a "Smart Machine Age," what do you see as the greatest challenge to educating children for life readiness? #SuptChat
A3: Imagine a three-year period with no legislative mandates whatsoever. All educators could put more intellectual resources towards students/classrooms/schools. #suptchat
A4: As we move from a Knowledge Age to a ""Smart Machine Age,"" what do you see as the greatest challenge to educating children for life readiness?
Preparing kids for the unknown - what we think the future will hold ... powerful and awesome challenges
#suptchat
A4 Leaders in the “Smart Machine age” must focus on collaborating with others to create and maintain strong #relationships while empowering colleagues to be engaged and collaborating. #suptchat
A3: I love being the person who replies to the “yes, but” with a concrete answer or “we won’t know if we don’t try”. It changes the dynamic of the conversation and sets a more positive tone to the conversation. #suptchat
A4: In the "Smart Machine Age" we need to admit that the adults must shift from the "knowledge sharers" to the the "learning facilitators/coaches." #suptchat
and @GrantLichtman (worth the follow) speaks eloquently to the North Star that takes your SIP or DIP and turns it into a more detailed document of agreements that clearly explain vision and mission and get to strategic design #suptchat
A4: Ss need firm knowledge of programming robots, artificial intelligence, increased global connectivity, major advances in computer power, and virtual and augmented reality. Finding teachers in these fields will be a challenge. Tech campuses and field-based internships!#suptchat
A4) States, districts and people who adhere to a narrow curriculum and a focus on test scores, which are not aligned to the needs of the present, let alone the future. #suptchat
and Sinek speaks to the critical focus on building a “why” curriculum to help paint the picture of why change will make a difference - we tend to focus more on what and how #suptchat
a4 Being relevant. How do our schools look anything a majority of real world work places? Content will always have a place as a foundation for learning. However, there are much more important topics that are less focused on #suptchat
A4) I see the biggest challenge is showing our future that the phone/tablet/I-whatever is a great tool, but not the end-all-be-all. Regardless of what era we love in, we need to be good people, and that requires us to actually interact with each other 👍👀👩👧👦 :) #suptchat
A4: Sustaining innovative thinking by adults to provide opportunities for all students. Meaning how might we find ways to educate Ss outside the walls of the school. #suptchat#MiddieRising
@HessEdward would give this a two thumbs up - how we learn and competencies that move us pass what we learn are critical for our kids to be able to transfer and transform capabilities over the decades to come #suptchat
Q5: Change in this day and age comes without a simple instruction manual. How do we prepare children if we don’t know what we’re preparing them for? #SuptChat
A5: Some basics for students are "Timeless". Manners, cooperation, and working with others. Ethics and problem solving. And basic skills such as reading with comprehension. #SuptChat
A5: We’re going to need to stay informed of all areas of the future. Partner with business & industry on the trends. Rely on one another through social media networks. Curriculums and going to have to be flexible, and change at a moment’s notice, to meet Ss needs. #suptchat
#suptchat agreed. We know our students need labs & shops for many skill/trade courses, but what about business, marketing, etc. Whose work place is rows of desks?
a4 Being relevant. How do our schools look anything a majority of real world work places? Content will always have a place as a foundation for learning. However, there are much more important topics that are less focused on #suptchat
I’m certainly guilty of a few “how” conversations which lead me to not have something to move forward. Blocking something out because you’re stuck on the “how” will often lead to discourse. #SuptChat
A5: Education need to focus on creating adaptive and resilient students for success in THEIR futures. We must prepare them for the unexpected world ahead. #suptchat
A5: teach them to be content seekers not receivers. Teach them to be kind, reflective, giving. Teach them to ask questions, generate an action plan and seek knowledge. Then they are prepared for anything. #suptchat
WE may not know the exact jobs (we do know some) But maybe have an idea of the skills that may be required. Computational thinking, problem solving, cooperation, analysis, information allocation, communication in all levels, networking. #suptchat
A5: I wrestle with this daily. Are we going in the right direction? Right now if we focus on 4 c’s (of some definition of C), and we prepare students on how to learn, then we prepare students to work in any context with any content. #suptchat
and this is why learning has to become timeless vs time bound so that we can create those deep experiences that encompass metacognition and reflective practice and learning #suptchat
#suptchat is nationwide tonight! active tweeters from IL, IA, OH, PA, CO, NJ, NY, VA, MN, GA - one out of every five US states in the chat tonight! Wow - thank you!
A5: It is more about strategies, thinking, problem solving, communication, research, "fixing" things and capabilities instead of singular skills. #SuptChat
Q6: Some say mass standardization has impeded more than supported contemporary learners and learning. How would educators and parents understand learning development and growth if standards were not the driver of the work children accomplish? #SuptChat
A5) we can still prepare for learners to be good people and partake in society in a productive and positive manner. We don’t need to know about wha the future holds for that! #suptchat
A6 Learning development and growth can be understood and encouraged by providing a continuum of general attributes and criteria that can be measured in a variety of ways. #suptchat
A6 How would educators and parents understand learning development and growth if standards were not the driver of the work children accomplish? Starting with clear, concise communication and standards - showing not telling, legit portfolios that students can create #SuptChat

A6: Tremendous amount of collaboration amongst staff and community members. Ensuring clarity on learning outcomes. Rubrics would need to be shared and reviewed throughout the learning process. Frequent formative assessments to check for understanding and obtain data. #suptchat
A6: We need to help parents understand that metrics of success that existed when they were young do not equate to metrics of success for their kids. The world is changing. #suptchat
A5: teach them to be content seekers not receivers. Teach them to be kind, reflective, giving. Teach them to ask questions, generate an action plan and seek knowledge. Then they are prepared for anything. #suptchat
Q6: This is a good q. I can imagine conversations, performance tasks, self-reflection, eye-balls. However, it is hard for me to put it into a organized boxed answer that would work. I'm sure @PrincipalMKelly has some good ideas #suptchat
A5: teach them to be content seekers not receivers. Teach them to be kind, reflective, giving. Teach them to ask questions, generate an action plan and seek knowledge. Then they are prepared for anything. #suptchat
A6: A true partnership with the community. Side by side, transparent, and a hands on partnership to generate clarity in direction. Stronger together! Better together! #suptchat#MiddieRising
A6: Standards are different from standardization. Standardization around singular tests is a narrowed communication. Standards within projects, problem solving, demonstration of learning in authentic ways tells so much more. #suptchat
A6: in the age of data, I’m sure we can construct means of progress in an instant gratification age. The trouble is that education is an investment in the future. Those outcomes will not be actualized until 10-15 years later. #suptchat
A7: teaching and learning time might be different if approached through a “problem-posing” educational model - it could be like teaching US History via the Supreme Court cases - what was the problem that caused the conflict & solution & positions on both sides? #suptchat
A7: We use a Project Based Learning model where Ss drive their leaning with a “problem posing” Driving Question. Through PBL, learning through projects, through less constrained time period, where Ss lead their learning & allowing flexibility & deeper understanding. #suptchat
A6) We are still sending our children to school to learn how to interact with others while obtaining information. Granted how we are teaching is (and will continue to be) the subject of change, regardless of standards, we are instilling academics, athletics, & arts! #suptchat
educators everywhere care and commit to educating our young people well -and they understand that learning begins with relationships they build and sustain - that’s timeless! #suptchat
A7: I love inquiry based learning for this very reason. It is more authentic, increases engagement and opens so many more doors for leaning. Teaching students to question is a life-skill. #suptchat
and I think David how early tribes and villages shared the teaching of young people - stories around campfires, imagery, dance, arts, modeling, imitative play - the best of who we are as educators was defined in community learning #suptchat
A7: we wouldn’t”cover” as much, but we would develop deeper understanding. Test scores would likely dip, but we would have better thinkers. Thinking is a practice made perfect! #suptchat

Q8: .@grantlichtman refers to a school's shared vision as its "north star," what is your "north star?" #SuptChat
A8: My North Star is Data Informed Student Focused, Learner Centered Innovation (safe place and space for ALL students, staff)
A7. Sorry that daughter’s softball practice made me late. Problem based instruction would allows risk-taking, wonderful mistakes and accidental solutions to flourish at every grade level in each discipline: pretty cool stuff. #SuptChat
A8: My North Star is our shared Vision that “All students will learn and be successful” and our shared Mission “To promote self-worth, social responsibility, and lifelong learning in partnership with our community”. #suptchat
A8) my “North Star” will always be to meet ALL of my learners where they are, regardless of background or experience. That’s the point of school; to learn. Us included. #SuptChat
A7: Time might not even be factor or noticed. Learning would be the driver. How often do we lose track of time when we are deeply engaged in a project? #SuptChat
A8: Opportunities for all students. Every student in this country deserves opportunities to be successful. My "north star" centers on those opportunities 24/7/365. #suptchat#MiddieRising
Thank you, #SuptChat, for a stimulating conversation tonight. And thank you hosts, @pammoran, @npolyak, and @mikelubelfeld. We appreciate your time and leadership.
Thanks @pammoran for stretching our thinking tonight. Grateful for the opportunity to learn from everyone this evening. Continue to do great things for students. #suptchat#MiddieRising
A8: My North Star is opening access to all possibilities for all students. Learning and growth for all - students and adults. That our students are able to attain their "first choice" for their future. #SuptChat
A8-2) that, and I stay the course in doin what is best for our learners, knowing that not everyone (and sometimes nobody) will be happy with the decisions you make. It’s certainly not easy, but nothing involving change or different points of view is. #Suptchat
as always delighted to connect with the amazing participants in #suptchat who are always willing to share, answer questions, support us all up in our hard work to lead with our educators and communities for our children #suptchat
A8. I have a passionate belief in the ability of remarkable teachers to transform lives. My North Star is to create a culture that supports truly remarkable educators to be their best. #suptchat
