Morning #bfc530 ! Another year of #insomniaEd has begun as I've been up since 3:30. Perhaps that's because I'm sleeping on a crib mattress on the floor until we move, but I'm still excited for another day !
Grade 9 has a solid core of classes: five (out of seven) are all grade 9 requirements. Students matches from two electives, including world language.
#bfc530
Depends on what classes they took in 7th and 8th. My old school would also get recommendations from each 8th grade teacher then counselors would sit down one-on-one to help students make decisions about what to take. #bfc530
Good Morning #bfc530.
I teach electives so it's up to students & family. Many departments including ours do presentations at the sending middle schools to recruit.
OK I'm the wrong person to ask #bfc530
Only choice our Year 8 have is Italian or Japanese.
Others all compulsory: English, Maths, Science, Humanities, RE, Art, PE and then one semester of Food, DIT, Music and Drama
We are an independent school, so a bit different. We follow state requirements, but there tends to be choice within projects. Our 8th graders are in their last year in middle school. #bfc530
Eighth graders machete choices after many opportunities to meet: Family Open Houses, large meetings, small advisories, communication between guidance departments, parent/family sign-off.
#bfc530
Most are predetermined based on 8th gr. Math, history, English, and science. If they did well in an advanced or honors course they continue. Electives are their choice #bfc530

Already been up for an hour working on school stuff! Always have to do this at the beginning of the year, but it won't be a daily thing haha! Hope everyone had a great weekend! #bfc530
Italian or Japanese fascinates me! I don't think I've ever taught at a district that teaches Italian, despite the fact that there are so many Italian -Americans in this part of the county ( unlike the rest) #bfc530
HS Counselors meet w/each S to determine next course based on which ones they r in now. They also help plan out the 4 years of HS to keep them on track. #bfc530
Yes, I've literally been sleeping on a baby mattress. Reminds me of when I first started teaching and couldn't afford furniture, slept on the floor for my first two years ! #bfc530
I’m unsure how high school classes are determined in my school... we have a lower school, middle school and high school- I’m with the younger students! #bfc530
Historically most schools chose their language on what language teacher they could get. Usually it was a European language. then we all realised we do business with Asia so we also chose an Asian language #bfc530 1/2
I have an opinion on this question, if that helps. I don't think there should be any honors courses for 9th graders. The focus should be on building community as a class, and that comes by heterogeneously grouping, not homogeneously grouping #bfc530
Ive only ever worked High school. I know that the HS makes a decision about which classes will be offered and send them to the feeder MSs. But thats about it. #bfc530

Our freshmen don’t get much choice. World History, their next math, science based on recommendation science 9 or bio, English 9, Spanish 2 and an elective. #bfc530
It is exciting ! It's been a long, long road. It will be more exciting once this house sells! Hopefully soon, this crib mattress thing and the long commute are no fun #bfc530

We have a strong relationship with a school in Italy and at Year 11 students can go over there for 3 weeks and experience the culture.
Also do a Japanese tour every 2nd year. (our relationship there is newer)
In our district, Ss take Honors, CP, or standard levels of freshman requirements. Teacher recs and parent demands put Ss where they are, you can predict who goes where. Little upward movement. #bfc530
Many of our 8th grade students are already taking HS classes ... next year they could be taking as many as four HS level classes now it sits at 3 #bfc530
I'm with you on that. The problem is that honors classes start much earlier than that. In some places there are GT (gifted and Talented) classes in elementary school. #bfc530
get the need for kids to be working on their level but I wonder how much is too much and what is our motivation? Is it really best interest of the kid or is it more about school grade enhancing. My old school dumped many kids in AP classes just because it gave bonus puts #bfc530
We r starting to c more classes being "pushed down" to the MS. Earth Science is the latest. In 2 yrs. all 8th graders will take Algebra & Earth Science, & prob a language. #bfc530
Good morning. Most 9h graders follow a pretty set schedule with required core classes. There is some flexibility with room for one or two electives. #bfc530
I agree. I am not a HS teacher, but when kids are placed in tracks as freshmen - what’s the point of striving for the ones not in honors? And they get that loud and clear. #bfc530

At my school, AP options start in 10th, so honors and AP in 10th for some subject areas. That's why I really feel as if giving them a year to set down roots and see what CP level demands is much better than floundering in honors just to be in honors #BFC530
I have this thought frequently. We have kids taking classes in the 8th grade that I didn't take until I was a sophomore or Jr in HS. Is that a good thing? #bfc530#notsosure
Good morning friends! Would consider donating to help my students take a seat in a classroom of the future? Please support my campaign to make their classroom a more flexible workspace with these desks. https://t.co/JMPH2elPIv#bfc530
I already see it with my middle school child. Feels deficient for being in standard level math classes. The kids discuss and label based on the institutional labels. #bfc530
Exactly. My daughter was one grade ahead in math since 3rd (along with 2/3 of her class) and took honors/advanced in all her core MS classes. I like the idea, but difficult to reset to the same HS starting point, especially when some 9th graders are already taking AP #bfc530
Lets not forget that GT and AP classes at such an early age usually denotes a difference in behavior and not a difference in understanding of the content. #bfc530

There is no evidence the party happened.
There is no evidence she ever met Kavanaugh or his friend.
There is no evidence Kavanaugh and his friend were drunk in a room with a girl.
There is no evidence Kavanaugh was at the same party she was.
There is no evidence this happened.
Don't forget to get your daily dose of Vitamin D. Go out and get sunshine on your body. Sunshine is best source of #VitaminD. If you are busy during the week, use the #weekend to spend sometime in the sun. #healthtip
I love the content of the AP course ... I taught AP US History ... 51 kids in 2 classes ... not every kid was ready for a college level class even if their test score said they were. #bfc530
I’ve been having these conversations lately. Our kids can choose to try advanced for 9 weeks (middle school), so cut-off is coming & many don’t belong. Amazes me how many think on-level is ‘remedial’ *sigh*. I teach both - on-level is often smaller & kids would thrive #BFC530
Ideally parent & teacher both help Ss pick appropriate stream (academic/applied) & electives (art/music /drama) but parents have ultimate choice. #bfc530

Morning, #bfc530. I'm at a K-12 charter, so HS counselor introduces course selection process to 8th graders. Ss identify elective priorities; Ts make recommendations from their course. (e.g., I recommend placement for grade 9 English, from 2 choices - honors or standard)
