#BadgeChatK12 Archive
#BadgeChatK12 was founded in December, 2014 by a group of educators who are passionate about credentialing learning and achieving. While there are thousands of us around the globe issuing badges to learners, there was not yet a regular twitter chat for those of us in the K-12 space to gather for learning and sharing about badging. After reaching out to leaders in the field (like the good folks at Mozilla and The Badge Alliance) for their thoughts, #BadgeChatK12 was born.

I'm curious about badges. :) First time here.
Let’s get to know each other. What do you teach? Where are you? Do you use badges or just curious?
Hello ! Sarah here from the DC area.
Hola Deb! Thanks for joining! Don't hesitate to ask questions...we'll do our best to answer!
As far as badging/PD, I believe in flexibility for providing evidence. It depends on what best demonstrates your learning
Katie in Atlanta, using badges w T's in middle school, curious how to scale to Ss
Hi I'm Shelly from Texas! I use badges in highered & when training teachers
Hola Laura! Great to have you with us today!
Q1: How is attaching evidence to Badges valuable?
A1 Evidence provides substance and context to a badge assertion. It tells a story about why the earner earned it.
A1 It can be even more motivating and empowering to have your work displayed.
Love the *storytelling* idea, Don!
A1: attaching evidence helps future employers or those evaluating skills see the work and creativity behind the badge
need fast visual résumé but also need real projects that back badges up
A1: Allows the learner to showcase their learning and learning outcomes.
I like the idea of an earner's story https://t.co/kNMu6jWCgc

Agree! With evidence, employers don't have to take our word for it..can click to validate that criteria met

Awesome thinking to kick us off with the first question. On to question 2...
Q2: What might strong evidence look like?
make learning and voluntary skills more appealing in
Thx! I like to think that badges used this way are a bit like a behavioural interview in chunks
a table chart with a bullet point lust of the learning outcomes with the badge on the left
I dig it. Are you thinking this will help make criteria clear to all stakeholders?
A2: Strong evidence is arbitrary. To me, it depends on what the earner feels best demonstrates what they have learned
Gwen from VA, I teach history, civics and language arts! Wanting to learn how to use badges!
yes sorry lust should of spelt as list apologies
Fair...are there certain "lookfors" that distinguish arbitrary strong from arbitrary weak?
If it's my class, the student would have the choice. How about you? https://t.co/QxhnB0JbR7
Does student have choice to make their work public or is it a requirement of sharing your badge?
A2 Agree that "strong evidence" is arbitrary. Who decides? The issuer of the badge? The badge earner?
A2 Like ePortfolios: relevant, current, authentic, etc. Triangulation is good, ie more than one piece.
A2: strong evidence requires a view of the actual product or shows the impact of the work. I require links or attachments
From a badging/pd perspective, I trust my Ts to choose what they feel best demonstrates their learning https://t.co/N8xImjga0O
Fair...are there certain "lookfors" that distinguish arbitrary strong from arbitrary weak?
A2: Student just told me "Good evidence has to be more than just a picture...needs to explain how criteria is met"
I am a little slow, but will catch on!
I think the badge earner should have as much say and control over this as possible. https://t.co/8linMwwWLc

no worries! Twitter chats are often fast and furious
Yes, reflection on evidence is a form of curation
Could criteria come from the NETS*T standards? There are NETS*S and NETS*Admin standards as well...for Technology.
good point you could set up levels of difficulty to make a badge more challenging
Remember I am new, and have no idea what I'm saying. ahahha
I think Laura's "arbitrary" point is important. Also think important stuff is often *subjective* and it's a tough balance.
Little late...Amy from MD. Very interested in (and new to) badging for teachers!
Absolutely.. are stackable and can demonstrate multiple achievements https://t.co/GeadRQ6FNc

If you don't leave room for that flexibility, it is just another top-down initiative https://t.co/4OVczbS4A0

Feel free to linger on Q2 while we move on to our third question...
Q3: What are important considerations and Pro Tips for Badge evidence?
If you want to learn more about competency-based PD, you can check out our guide to micro-credentials! https://t.co/pTChK5kqwn
You mean ISTE? There are several badge systems that support ISTE stds. https://t.co/0HfZN3lW1G

Potentially yes! What if badge issuer establishes clear criteria in order for badge to be earned? https://t.co/JurRVcMWIl

I'm prepping for conf on this Saturday for 4pm
A2: When I consider "strong evidence" I go to Badge audience; what will they want/expect in order for Badge to have currency?
A3: Make sure S is proud of work so that connecting evidence with badge doesn't discourage them from sharing badge publicly.
A3: Tip! Give clear criteria in the beginning & have learners provide a link or attachment to the product
A2: Showcasing evidence can be a powerful way to learn from each other
Clear criteria/expectations are usually helpful for learners trying to reach them!
How do you strike balance btwn flexibility, student choice, and non-negotiable criteria for badge? https://t.co/dyTqAHKafv

Great point about impt of encouraging ss to share their Badges! Audience leads to meaning, value
make badges as attainable as possible.
Yes! Online evidence is easiest to post, share, showcase in other avenues (website, blog, eportfolios...)
Say more about that...assuming attainable doesn't necessarily mean easy?
A3 If your badge system doesn't support evidence, try embedding badges in ePortfolios w evidence: historical and/or ongoing
Welcome Amy! Glad you could join us
Time flew today. Thanks for joining today and huge shoutout to mods and
was about to ask about integration
What if you award a badge...and the students don't even notice they got one? Lived it. And I was SO hopefull!
Is this a weekly chat? I'd love to connect with you guys again!
It is! Every Monday at 6:30EST. We alternating btwn twitter and google hangouts for a show and tell
Have an awesome, Badge worthy week everyone!
Yes! every Monday at 630pm ET
Great Q - how might their learning community value badges? Perhaps brainstorming w/Ss could help increase value
Try co-creating badges with students, making students issuers, etc. Award them power & watch them go. https://t.co/KIR1w6avjz

Keep up your great work I empathize w/the struggle of not getting the desired response
Criteria SB rigorous but not overly prescriptive. There SB room for choice in how criteria are met. https://t.co/vletGfznL6
