A2: As a Math and Science teacher, making sure to be very aware of 'jargon' by defining it clearly, using it appropriately, and giving Ss opportunities to incorporate the vocabulary (through reports, projects, think pair share...) #MSFTEduChat#literacy
A3: You must pull out all the tools in your teacher tool belt: paired reading, changing the reading level, reading aloud to the class, creating a class dictionary and so much more! #MSFTEduChat
A2 I try to encourage my accounting learners to talk and write confidently using technical terms but always give them the option to talk/write using simpler language.
#MSFTEduchat
#msfteduchat In the classrooms I visit across the globe one thing stands out. When students have something that they care about deeply, they want to communicate about it in spoken and visual texts. Connect to the drivers to engage and high standard LITERACY skills are an OUTPUT
A3 Allowing students voice and choice is a great way to differentiate. Graphic novels, video clips, young reader's editions of class texts are all great ways to engage with the same text but meeting students at their level. #msfteduchat@SkypeClassroom
A3 Provide multiple supports and challenges to let the student "play" in their learning at the pace they find success and want to be challenged. Our classroom activities should draw in our students to want to participate.

A3, Part 3 : ) #MSFTEduChat@Girlrising customizes content for schools and nonprofits, enhancing their efforts to educate and engage young people and to create measurable change, community by community. #BeTheSpark#Literacy
A3 I differentiate by using @newsela. It provides my ELL SS with differentiated articles and allows Ss of all reading abilities to work with the same content but within their appropriate reading level. #MSFTEduChat
a2 The LNF doesn't tell excellent teachers how to teach a subject they are experts in, but prompts them to think about how skills can be developed in their classroom - making them even better teachers!
#msfteduchat
A3: Great teachers follow the lead of their students. They differentiate literacy with our readers by knowing them first, then following their passions, interests, and goals. #MSFTEduChat
A3. Differentiated instruction is not a single strategy, but rather an approach to instruction that incorporates a variety of strategies. Teachers can differentiate content, process, and/or product for students. #MSFTEduChat@SkypeClassroom

With a few taps on my screen, I can use formative assessment data from fluency to setup literature circles.
#MSFTEduChat#MicrosofEDU
A2b: Additionally, as a teacher of ELLs, I find it useful to have a running vocabulary list of any difficult/new words or concepts. Trying to link new concepts to old ones is also important. #MSFTEduChat
Being told stories and being read to leads children to develop the rich storehouse of language, grammar and vocabulary they need to bring to texts when learning to read and write. Visit our multilingual and audio stories section to explore with your child https://t.co/6oP0vUpy48
This is a great idea for an exercise. Identify a piece of jargon, bring out the conventional definition, then have students rework it to build understanding and share with peers. Love it!
#MSFTEduChat
A3: ideally, Ts would recognize what works best for each student, no one size fits all. Utilizing tools and tech can make the workflow issue easier. Since we are 1:1, our Ts and Ss can share audio/video/writing to make sure each student is progressing accordingly #MSFTEduChat
#msfteduchat literacy is too often factory fed as an input with the hopes that active, informed, engaged learners will the output. In my 25 years teaching, literacy skills have always been a by-product of engaging, purposeful, organized, fun learning.
A3. Provide access to similar activities at different levels, and allow for different output based on student ability and need. Group your students within the Buncee classroom dashboard to differentiate your lessons. https://t.co/X5xEBlefJR#MSFTEduChat
A4. There are many I use, Kahoot, One Note, Edmodo classnotebook, even Padlet and flipgrid. I am now contemplating the idea of using Teams.
Favorite still remains OneNote
#msfteduchat#Skypeclassroom@TeachSDGs
Literacy should be incorporated in each content in order to make it more effective and informative like images, videos, graphs, literacy importance is every aspect of life. #MSFTEduChat

A3 - Differentiate through #GuidedChoice... So important to support learning through student ownership by giving choice. Purpose guided by teacher and relevance provided by student!#MSFTEduChat
A3. Mainly through @OneNoteEDU -I know of many teachers who put audio notes beside written notes so students can read and listen to feedback. Obviously, Learning Tools provides great options here too to reach all learners!! #MSFTEduChat

A3: Ss need to be comfortable and confident in their own skills. While we need to develop their reading/writing, first we need to make them safe and secure in case they struggle. #MSFTEduChat
Amber Peterson: The need for diverse & expansive independent reading libraries can't be understated. Offer students choice & voice to foster a lifelong passion for reading & writing. Literacy skills = social/emotional skills. #MSFTEduChat@MicrosoftEDU@SkypeClassroom
A3: I always tell students if they're stumped on a math word problem to draw it out. Draw anything. Even if you think it's a bad model, you can work with something down on paper. I get some awesome drawings and the more artistic students come alive in math! #MSFTEduChat
I saw a teacher use the collaboration space in @OneNoteEDU to have her students create the dictionary and then she hyperlinked any words that appeared in her readings back to their class dictionary! #MSFTEduChat

A3: You need to make things relevant for all readers. Relevant to their culture and relevant to their everyday lives in order to make it more engaging. #msfteduchat
#MSFTEduChat I think that engaging with the learner about what interests them helps to draw them into a text/piece of writing. Free writing and free reading helps pupils to develop the joy of literacy. Give support where necessary. Sometimes they’ll surprise you though.
Literacy instruction should be precise enough to keep all the students involve in the work and should not be boring one, it is always depends on the teacher to engage the students in the class while teaching or letting them complete the class work,#MSFTEduChat

A3. I think that the challenge isn't how to differentiate the instruction, but something that I think many of us can improve on is getting to know the individual needs better. It shouldnt be "Ok I need to produce....." but "Right, what does John need to succeed?" #msfteduchat

Gran respuesta, amigo. Se puede ver claramente cuando un estudiante esta motivado y atento a la lectura y esto suele nacer de leer un género que le guste
#MSFTEduChat@SkypeClassroom
Lo más importante es despertar la pasión por la literatura en las nuevas generaciones. Una estrategia fundamental es dejar que los estudiantes elijan sus géneros y se use tecnología para motivarlos al máximo.

Wouldn’t miss it! As a student I struggled as a learner who was unconventional & who struggled as a reader, but books saved me! I found comfort in finding characters who I could see myself! So powerful! #MSFTEduChat
Besides @OneNoteEDU and the Learning Tools? @Newsela is one of my favorites everyone can get the same content just at a different reading level! #MSFTEduChat
A4 I use two tools that I use with my ELLs. They are the Learning Tools in @microsoftedu especially the Immersive Reader, and @newsela. I combine the reading practice with @flipgrid for oral practice. #MSFTEduChat
It’s the responsibility of all teachers to teach literacy. No matter what the subject specialism. Scotland’s Curriculum for excellence is very clear on that. 😀 And I love that about it. #MSFTEduChat
A2 Literacy is for all content areas and I am working with other state consultants to make this a visible practice. #literacy is not the domain of the English teacher for all teachers are facilitators of literacy. #MSFTeduChat#literacy#MicrosoftEDU
I use articles from reliable sources to highlight key points/issues in the topic we're discovering together. I also challenge learners to write their own in a similar style. #msfteduchat
A4: I use Learning Tools in OneNote frequently to teach my students English skills. Skype is also an amazing platform for students to exchange their stories.#MSFTEduChat#teachSDGs
a3. We have so many free, amazing tools at our disposal there is no excuse for pupils not being able to access - if they cant succeed its because we as teachers failed them #msfteduchat

A6. It's important to instill a ❤️ of reading at an early age. I love to read-aloud to my Ss, young and old & getting into character is my favorite part! #MSFTEduChat
A6: @magistravill & I have been talking a lot about this lately. We find that passion for reading has waned in our HS Ss & she is facilitating Readers' Workshop to combat that. Great Gatsby is anchor text but Ss came to library to read 1st lines & choose book. #MSFTEduChat
A5 - NEVER forget your #why and remember that even on the "bad" days, that you are affecting the lives of children & that your love & passion for what you do will stay with them forever. The faces of your students reflect their love for literacy that YOU inspired! #MSFTEduChat
The key is to be REALLY pedantic when following the students instructions - encourages the students to perfect their instructions - students want to beat the teacher!!! #MSFTEduChat

Tools are just what they are-tools, supporters in the hands of talented and passionate educators who are true facilitators of learning. #MSFTEduChat#literacy#MicrosoftEdu
A6 Giving students voice and choice when selecting reading selections can be incredibly empowering. Having conversations about books and reading can help foster passion and enthusiasm! #msfteduchat@SkypeClassroom
A6: We can improve reading instruction by giving teachers the time, space, and support to meet their students' needs. And the resources. And great professional learning and development! #MSFTEduChat
A6: In addition to teaching annotation & required texts, it's important to find time to allow HS Ss opportunity for book choice so passion for reading is not lost. @magistravill is trying to find that balance & I'm excited about it. #MSFTEduChat#literacy
A6. Let students choose what they read, “read for fun” each day, get parents involved in reading too, let students see your own passion for reading, and read together. #MSFTEduChat@SkypeClassroom#Literacy
Amber Peterson: Reading at its core is a deeply personal experience; make sure personal choice is part of the equation. Passionate readers are ones who feel connected to texts, who are inspired by them & eager to learn more. #MSFTEduChat@MicrosoftEDU@SkypeClassroom
A6. Do read alouds of exhilarating books & give students more choice in the books that they read in the classroom. Then, allow students a variety of ways to create and respond to what they're reading! #MSFTEduChat
A5: Encouraging Ss to blog is also another way to promote literacy. I've seen my Ss' writing grow tremendously since they started blogging. When they know they have an authentic audience, it's amazing what it inspires! #MSFTEduChat
A5. For inspiration, head to the Global Read Aloud and World Read Aloud Day websites. Use their resources for lesson ideas & books! We've then seen students use Buncee to create readers' journals and story responses. #MSFTEduChat
A6: Part 2 Introduce students to real people telling their own stories using their talents & passions to make the world a better place! #BeTheSpark#MSFTEduChat#Literacy
A6 We must make reading fun. Not force Ss to participate until they are ready. Allow Ss to respond in their first language when appropriate so they feel they are part of the conversation and have a voice. #MSFTEduChat
A5: It's not a resource, but a mindset. At first I thought if I wanted Ss to write, I'd have to grade on grammar, punctuation, etc but I DON'T. I still make corrections and have some expectations, but I focus on my content instead. More important that Ss read&write!
#MSFTEduChat
A1. #Literacy is an essential aspect of our everyday lives that is embedded in our activities, social interactions & relationships. It is not only the ability to read & write, but to comprehend. #MSFTEduChat@SkypeClassroom
A6: Part 3 #MSFTEduChat Through mass media campaigns & community-led partnerships, @girlrising uses storytelling to inspire girls to create a different future & bring people together in a shared mission to create transformational change in the way girls are valued. #Literacy
A1. Literacy means being able to critically analyze & appropriately respond to any content. Strong literacy skills are more important now than ever in this age of information! #MSFTEduChat
Giving students a voice is an incredibly powerful method of encouraging writing and fostering a passion for reading/writing! Great work! #msfteduchat@SkypeClassroom
Amber Peterson: Because reading is a largely invisible act, embrace any opportunity to create community around texts, whether through the read aloud, book clubs, or digital reading message boards. #MSFTEduChat@MicrosoftEDU@SkypeClassroom
A6: Book Talks are very important! That means the adults need to be reading books and talk about them to your Ss! Also, BookTube on Youtube! There are expert BookTubers out there like @jessethereader and @peruseproject who talk up their faves. #MSFTEduChat
a5. We have invited authors to connect with our pupils for lunchtime Skype Club - the room was full and the questions didn't dry up! @SkypeClassroom#msfteduchat
A6: Let students read about their world and the issues they feel passionate about. Give them choices and a say in their learning. Let them TALK to one another and COLLABORATE. Kids don’t dislike reading-they dislike when things aren’t purposeful. #MSFTEduChat#teachSDGs
Maybe we can help you make a persuasive Buncee ;) I actually just saw an essay written by a 3rd grader about a pig today made on Buncee! I'll have to check up on that for ideas...#MSFTEduChat
#msfteduchat A6) Have shelves full of books at home and make sure kids see you reading for pleasure... It's been a slog but my oldest son is finally starting to read for pleasure
A5. Create a #literacy rich environment. This involves the selection of materials that will facilitate language & literacy opportunities; reflection & thought regarding classroom design; & intentional instruction & facilitation by teachers & staff. #MSFTEduChat
Here we go, I know I'm behind as always!! Too busy chatting with all you awesome folks. Q6. How can we improve reading instruction to create passionate readers?
#Literacy#MSFTEduChat@SkypeClassroom#MicrosoftEDU
A6 we can engage readers by firstly being engaged ourselves, be excited about the books we're sharing. Consistent exposure to good quality literature. Reading should be a part of every day #msfteduchat
A5: I think that's also one of the magical pieces of @Buncee, the ease of sharing #Buncee reinforces to Ss that they have an authentic audience that really does actually read, respond, and share. And, MAGIC happens as a result! And, I LOVE it! 😊💛😊#MSFTEduChat
A5: Encouraging Ss to blog is also another way to promote literacy. I've seen my Ss' writing grow tremendously since they started blogging. When they know they have an authentic audience, it's amazing what it inspires! #MSFTEduChat

For me one strategy works the most in many aspects and Dts real life simulation.teacher must gadget himself with tool bag of strategies. Mental level of learner does count #MSFTEduChat
A6: I saw students in @LakeWashSchools who couldn't put their books down in MS, but then something happened in HS where reading is not as fun. I think we need to give more choice to students #msfteduchat
A6 Let them read - ANYTHING. Surely reading something is better than reading nothing? Get them to write a summary about what they're reading - maybe asking them to incorporate a key word or phrase. #MSFTEduchat
Give some choice on the books they read, and never tell student they are not reading fast enough. (This put me off reading) For reading to be enjoyed you need to use your imagination.
A6: Choice. Allow Ss to select reading material, even if it is a comic book, a cook book (analytical), it could jump start the love of reading #creativity with the written word #msfteduchat also start including #TechnicalWriting and reading- how to books, step by step guides, etc
A6. Utilize tools that streamline differentiation and personalization. Get out from behind the desk and talk to your students to gauge their interests and their reactions to materials. Slowly build up their confidence and join them on their journey through literacy!
#MSFTEduChat
A6. If we don't instruct and let the students pick what they want to read about (within reason!) they will be more passionate about it. Student voice and ownership of their learning 🤗 #MSFTEduChat
Ingenious, you have a really nice grasp of student psyche! There was one time I identified a teacher's mistake when I was 15 and I felt equal parts precocious and proud, still remember it haha... #MSFTEduChat

A6 - Allowing your students #accessible options for their learning. So many students are stuck in their own minds with their thoughts because they can't share their learning or passion. #Accessibility is not longer an option, its a #responsibility#MSFTEduChat@MSFTEnable
A6. Do read alouds of exhilarating books & give students more choice in the books that they read in the classroom. Then, allow students a variety of ways to create and respond to what they're reading! #MSFTEduChat
Yes! Opening their options (more than just books). Students love reading graphic novels and nonfiction (if it is within their interests). #msfteduchat@SkypeClassroom
A6: #msfteduchat very important tobe passionate reader to share our passion, love and Enthusiasm. If a charismatic author can share his charisma with your students the game is done
A6 we can engage readers by firstly being engaged ourselves, be excited about the books we're sharing. Consistent exposure to good quality literature. Reading should be a part of every day #msfteduchat
A6 #MSFTEduChat : my 8-year-old pupils are practicing to read an album for their 6-year-old companions. They are proud to read them the book into classroom.

#msfteduchat A6) Find the book that will spark the readers imagination. @AdamGrant highlights how inventor of submarine read 2,000 leagues under the sea... science fiction becomes science fact.
Amber Peterson: Reading at its core is a deeply personal experience; make sure personal choice is part of the equation. Passionate readers are ones who feel connected to texts, who are inspired by them & eager to learn more. #MSFTEduChat@MicrosoftEDU@SkypeClassroom
A6 Personalize it for all S's find something that kick starts that passion for reading in each of regardless of whether it seems educational or not our job is to introduce them to the Magic that reading a story can bring to life for them. #msfteduchat
A6 have a variety of texts in the class as well as directing pupils to some online (comics, science journals, biographies etc) Show parents how to access the Learning tools to support students at home. Let them read for fun and ask them about it too #MSFTEduChat
A2: #TeachSDGs make it easy to incorporate what they learn in all content areas,
starting by learning about the world and reflect about how to make it better,
giving them purpose de read, learn, understand and Communicate #msfteduchat#Litracy

A6:
1. Let students choose what they read
2. Don’t assign work with reading.
3. Let students decide what to talk about.
4. Get parents involved in reading too.
5. Meet outside of class to talk about books.
6. See a movie about what was read.

A5 ANOTHER great resource/event is @SkypeClassroom's broadcast event with Actor, Producer & Author, Henry Winkler & his partner Lin Oliver! Sign your classroom up for a live read aloud, celebrating each child's creativity & greatness #msfteduchat#Skype2Learn
A student not feeling rushed or embarrassed when reading aloud is vital - no surer way to associate books with humiliation than laughing at someone who is reading out a passage!! #literacy#MSFTEduChat

#MSFTEduChat We're working on HS curriculum framed around #esports that covers ELA, SEL, STEM. (Sorry for alphabet soup!) Why esports? We can meet students in the center of *their* interests & they'll be excited to learn > literacy increases dramatically. https://t.co/eYiPowgCVY
You are SO right! I always hated reading as a kid because we were told what to read and how much to read in each lesson. After ignoring the teacher, my reading passion grew! #MSFTEduchat
#msfteduchat Siendo tutores. Mi abuelo usaba el método mas simple... ¿Ya leyeron X novela? Te comentaba algo muy específico que despertaba tu interés y terminaba buscándola...

A6. Came across a wonderful strategy at a TeachMeet once, not tried it myself but sounded like a great idea. Imagine 'Speed Dating' but book review style. Each student has 5 mins to review their favourite bool with a peer. After five mins, students swap places.#MSFTEduChat
A6: We must put the right book into a student’s hands. Every student is passionate about something and there are books about everything. Let the students choose to read about what they are interested in, this will create a passionate reader. #MSFTEduChat

Q5 Every lesson is unique as is every child, the dynamics of the learning environment require all to utilise their Computational Thinking, I've no set rule of thumb - it could be Plugged or Unplugged , in doors or outside - Literacy needs inspiration from anywhere #msfteduchat
21st century is critical thinking, being able to recognize fake news etc. I believe we need to redefine literacy and emphasize critical perception of information. #literacy#MSFTEduChat

Speed dating? I have an Icebreaker app for that.
Each student will meet up with every other student in the classic handshake math problem.

GreT tweetmeet. Thanks to all the hosts and everybody. Tomorrow’s task, to give more time to read science stuff for pleasure and encourage the kids too #MSFTEduChat
A6. We can continue to create passionate readers, by allowing students to suggest the types of books they would like to read. Learning is a collaborative medium and not only dependent on the educator's recommendation(s). @SkypeClassroom@MicrosoftEDU#Literacy#MSFTEduChat#GC4W
#MSFTEduChat started with me describing how I became passionate about reading and it has come full circle with Q6 describing how we can pass that passion along to others. See you at the next one!
En grados superiores utilizar herramientas de colaboración como OneNote para que en grupo creen sus propias historias y las compartan con otros pares, pueden ser también temas del interés de los chic@s. #MSFTEduChat
There's more tweetmeet action next week in Canada! On Tuesday, join the Canadian #MSFTEduChat on building future-ready #DigitalSkills in today's students.
#MSFTEduChat I love that we can send reading books home via the internet, to read and test for comprehension in a really fun way. Now there are always enough books for every reading group.
I am beyond excited to announce that I will be one of the hosts for the upcoming #MSFTEduChat on February 20th! The topic is LITERACY! Trust me when I say it is one you do not want to miss!
A2 Great point, Chefia - we try and incorporate a global platform for learning wherever we can! Very motivating for Ss - like our biggest annual writing comp: https://t.co/3ltf9MDqb9#MSFTEduChat
