-
Welcome Jay. How's everything?
-
Hi Ann, 3rd grade in Plainville.
-
Hi Jackie! What do you do as a peer practice coach?
-
A1: For me balances classroom content and gameplay in a way that promotes learning. It can be Hi-tech, Lo-tech or No-tech
-
Hi Ann!! How are you?! Are you coming to this year?
-
thx for joining our chat!
-
Hey there! So far so good. How are you?
-
Not sure if I'm on the right track, but to me it's using some type of game to teach or reinforce concept, instead of paper/pencil.
-
I have to say - I kind of forgot it was ! Oops! It was so warm it feels like spring!
-
-
A1: Integrating a game-based strategy into classroom lessons, study habits, and assessments
-
we host pedagogical discussions to enhance classroom practice, sometimes work one-on-one by teacher request
-
A1: Learning with games? I have no clue....
-
Yes, , definitely going to this year! Can't wait!
-
Oh wow...that sounds pretty cool!! Teachers must love to have that opportunity!
-
And he didn't see his shadow! Early Spring came today!! https://t.co/Lx0pdmnmZN
-
-
I have to say - I kind of forgot it was ! Oops! It was so warm it feels like spring!
-
-
A1 Can't beat Sean's definition but I see it as allowing kids to discover learning while having fun.
-
It's good! Focusing on the positive and enjoying the warm Feb. weather!
-
A1 For me, anything that provides an opportunity for sts to work on skills/learning in a friendly competition kind of way
-
A1: game-based learning incorporates strategy, forethought, collaboration of games into classroom exercises
-
A1 Game based learning is using components of game elements in your class. Can use tech, no tech, but it's about creating excitement.
-
Yay! Meeting you last year was my fav part! I can't wait to connect again!
-
Mike from Mt. Rainier Md - El school x2.
-
A1: game based learning is using digital game format to engage Ss in active learning
-
SO like playing a board game even? Can it be social learning?
-
Hi Mike! Welcome to ! Happy Tuesday!
-
It really is! we have discussed grit, 504 implementation, inquiry, even Twitter for PD!
-
A2 โ Providing Ss with limited consequences for failure and the ability to do something over and over again until mastery is obtained
-
A2: I use to pre assess, review content and post assess. I am using to enhance my electricity & magnetism unit.
-
WOw! So cool -- you inspire me to be better every day! I need to come visit your classroom
-
A1: Create the conditions that learners are not paralyzed by falling/failing. Aim to get to the next level as many tries as it takes.
-
-
-
game-based learning is my goal this year; I created this Fantasy Election for my gr10 AmGov S's https://t.co/qvX7fcHu0S
-
So can the learning be social learning? Or is it more turn a game of Sorry into something to do with a topic?
-
Hi, Tanya Anderson, media specialist in Stamford, CT
-
-
Second question coming soon
-
-
It's the truth! You brought blogging into my students lives!
-
We really need to come up with a project to connect our classes!
-
I'm def looking to get this going more in my room. Quite a novice for sure.
-
We draft at school, but prep for draft each week is done on their own Of course, they arrive to class talking about it
-
Hello everyone a little glitch I forgot to type in on the questions!! Yikes!!!!
-
Hello everyone a little glitch I forgot to type in on the questions!! Yikes!!!!
-
A2 So many options for gaming in classroom. to all have gaming components to them . Get kids excited
-
A2: We use things like with Ss created quizzes to help them be engaged
-
-
Math games are one of my rotation centers in math daily. Games always reinforce skills being taught. Mult. & Div. CandyLand are favs
-
A2 I use Socrative and Kahoot with iPads but also a few non-tech team review games.
-
Two I use: Kahoots and Quizlet ...Kahoots in class instant feedback visually and Quizlet for self directed learning
-
I forgot to attach on my tweets too :)
-
I forgot to attach on my tweets too :)
-
So it can literally be as simple as math games? Mult/Div CandyLand?! Do tell!
-
A2 Using apps like to take the mundane and make it engaging and interactive. Takes the information off the pages of the book
-
Kahoot starts at the end of this math unit, can't wait to intro it to them!
-
A1 Collaboration, Competition, Strategy, Cooperation,
-
A3 โ MinecraftEDU, All grades/ disciplines. As a sandbox game it can be used in a multitude of different ways https://t.co/H6Q1bCFu3j
-
A2: I use games as a way to encourage students to explore and take risk
-
A2: My students play "Vocabulary Concentration" to help reinforce their vocabulary words in Math & Science - they are obsessed!
-
Well, I don't know if that's officially what it is, but in 3rd grade, it is in my room.
-
Do you have a 1:1 classroom
-
Qt#3: What games are you currently using in your classroom? Please specify discipline and age of student https://t.co/P8N5qzyA3k
-
A3 โ QRCode Scavenger Hunts: All Grades & Disciplines. Inspired by the MagiQuestยฎ activity at Great Wolf Lodge but used to teach CCS.
-
S's make games to show what they learn like how a bill becomes a law; play & evaluate each others games for authentic feedback
-
Welcome to the every Tuesday at 8!
-
A2 Can't say I'm personally using gbl too much; I'm open to ideas for high school
-
A1) game based learning is anytime a learner can sit down and create some type of challenge where other can partake in it.
-
Here come the 3rd question
-
Oo..QR code scavenger hunts -- now that sounds like fun!
-
-
-
Looks like a lot of us r using and !
-
-
-
I love love love and the new videos are a hit with my middle schoolers
-
Yes, I have 24 Chromebooks, 7 ipads, and a PC lab in my library.
-
A1 - GBL is applying the elements of games (scoring, leveling up,...) to motivate and help Ss retain and apply knowledge
-
I could do everyday and my students would be in heaven
-
Agree! My kids are obsessed with -- they don't even think it is learning they get so involved
-
Our middle school looked into it, haven't used it at this point. Def some appeal there
-
-
it can get kind of crazy, and not for teachers that like quite classrooms, but very fun and engaging for students
-
Does anyone have an issue that provides points for the faster answer?
-
A3: We use a lot of math games - baseball multiplication, name that number, number top it 3rd grade
-
Is there a difference between learning that is game-based and assessment that is gamified?
-
-
I think a quiet classroom can be boring :) So this would work -- need to think of how to use it now...
-
My kids have used in my class when creating activities for peers, but I have yet to do it myself
-
-
. I am not sure if there is a difference.
-
A2 Love Kahoot. I think I could program q&a from every subject and every grade and students would bite.
-
A2: Is it weird that I make up my own games? Like "Just 2 words" Ss need 2 circle 2 keywords to use in a database search for inquiry
-
A4 - Challenging & relevant activities that allow Ss to feel confident while demonstrating perseverance
-
My students have an issue with that part of -- not always fair and sometimes makes them guess wrong answer
-
-
Most games are math games in my 3rd grade. Other than Kahoot, it's all board game or similar type, either ones I make or buy on TPT
-
Our middle school teachers are also using this year.
-
that can frustrate some students for sure and demotivate them.
-
A4: A winner isn't a bad thing, everyone gets a prize!
-
-
A2 - Nope, anything that engages and captivates works for me.
-
No - that's awesome! And sometimes those turn out to be the most fun and effective!
-
-
learned about it this fall...looks so awesome but my class so small
-
Does kahoot require strategy? collaboration? planning & revising? I think there is a difference
-
If I recall, Kahoot can be played wo points, yes?
-
A4 - Involves both intellect and feeling while requiring effort that feels like play
-
A4- In Quizlet, I ask Ss to "learn" sets...I've upgraded to T account 20 bucks per year and can create classes to monitor progress
-
sometimes I just make it up as I go!
-
I have a few kooky lo tech games I use from time to time also!
-
Sometimes you just need to make something up really quickly!
-
I use Kahoot to teach geography via Google Earth.
-
-
Ok, Teach may be an overstating it ...
-
Not really for you! Your students will use strategies to answer the questions. You can also have students work in teams
-
A5 โ They reinforce a growth mindset and promote "graceful failure"
-
Games definitely increase Ss engagement. But, we have to make sure that they don't bring anxiety issues out in Ss who don't "win."
-
A5 my students can't wait to play every time we review. They see test reviews as rewards now!
-
A5: The whole room is buzzing with discussion and excitement, about the craziest of things! Kids SOOOO motivated to know the content
-
I've thought about Global Kahoot - similar to .
-
-
Quick promo! We'd love to have folks come join our Thursday at 8 pm!
-
A5- I see total engagement, but one drawback... often vocabulary content driven so not high level thinking just memorization
-
A5: I agree. Games do introduce competition, so teachers have to be mindful
-
Wow! I can't believe how fast these things go. Next time I will have to have an espresso before I participate
-
Are your chats aimed at all levels or more towards secondary?
-
WestCiv S's made life-size medieval monopoly; gr10 made judicial branch Taboo - played and refined and reviewed
-
Wow! That was fast! Everyone thank you for chatting with us this evening. I have learned so much about game based learning.
-
-
I think lo-tech games are just as effective as high tech games and activities. They have their place
-
In past I had some Ss in tears over games or competitions, had to put an end to anything for points.
-
Invitation to ALL: in Colchester 4-6 on 2/17. 25 Student led activities, EdCamp Style. THERE WILL BE PIZZA!
-
In terms of Kahoot, my children tend to rush through it. Speed over quality.
-
I wish my life science class felt more like an unfolding adventure like some vid games.
-
Definitely all! This weeks topic deals with tech leading to behavior changes
-
-
Super! Going to have to put it on the calendar! I'm happy the days I remember it's Tuesday for this!
-
let me know if I can help
-
-
Thanks all! I've got some good ideas to try.
-
try Augmented Reality! So easy, so awesome!
-
Wow! That was too quick. Thanks you everyone participating in this evening. This was first time moderating a chat. Nice!
-
Why not? Make it a story. Plot, Action, mystery, even romance.
-
Time seriously flies in this chat! Goes by way too quickly! Thank you!
-
chats are so informative! What a great PLN. :-) thanks for your leadership!
-
might be my last๐ Thanks for showing me the ropes and helping me through it.
-
You guys rocked tonight. Great Job.
-
Thanks for sharing ideas tonight!
-
Thank you!!!! Do not let this be your last time. You did a great job this evening sharing your insight.
-
Thanks for helping us out this evening!!!
-
-
I will! Thanks for the offer Tanya!
-
-
You can control the pace of Kahoot. I have Ss justify their answer or support it with work on a slate.
