Please join us for a weekly conversation about design thinking in K12 education. We will have a variety of moderators with a wide range and depth of design thinking experiences. Each week, we will connect the dots to the design thinking methodology and how it can and will play a bigger role in today’s K12 educational arena.
Thanks Jess! It's busy as we're kicking off some new #PD initiatives and also exploring more ways to integrate #STEAM. #dtk12chat How's your year going?
I"m swimming smoothly. Refining my gradeless system, working on increasing feedback and Dist. Admin is seeking me out to help teach them about DT and Deeper Learning. (someone must have told them!) #dtk12chat
A1: Feeling pretty good about this year. It is Year 4, so I finally have some tools under my belt. Now is the time to start adding things like #designthinking in! #dtk12chat
A1 As it is my 1st year teaching DT, I have moved from being uncertain to feeling better about teaching DT but still learning how to truly harness all that it can do for our students at the high school level #dtk12chat
I am inland near Charlotte so we are not expected to be impacted till late Saturday or early Sunday. We will get lots of rain. My friends have most evacuated inland #dtk12chat
Embarking on some strategic work, which has been interesting, trying to shift teaching practice. I have a great team of teachers to work with. #dtk12chat
A1: Things are just getting rolling w/me; new title (IDEAS coach - Inquiry, Design, Engineering Art & Science); working toward partnering w/staff on a range of projects, not just science #dtk12chat
A1. Pretty great! Last year, my school wasn't finished being built yet so we were housed in 4 different schools until it was finished being built. It feels amazing to start this year together! #dtk12chat
A1 #dtk12chat feeling good. I've mindmapped out a month ahead, looking to increase student conferencing in many ways, and looking for a place to hang my "25 years of service" plaque ;-b
A1 One kid just started to learn to drive. One kid is the president of his class. Both parents: "O brave new world, / That has such people in 't!" #dtk12chathttps://t.co/jFtcUSCgzd
A2. My big hope and dream is to build a classroom where my students support each other, no one feels isolated or unsafe, and they get deep into reflecting about their learning. Another dream I have is for them to deeply connect with the land we live on. #dtk12chat
yes! So far working w/digital art teacher to create stop motion of seed dispersal w/2nd gr & using turtle art to make radial art design w4th gr #dtk12chat
A2: I really want to add in opportunities for my ss to empathize with those from other cultures and create based on the understandings they gain. Worry it is too ambitious though. #edt598#dtk12chat
A2 We are integrating DT and Challenge Based Learning with all 10th grade students. We are helping S learn how to apply DT process to create their own challenges to solve problems #dtk12chat#cbl We are learning so much together as we develop and refine this process
A2 We were talking about this at a #PD gathering today! I'm hoping for a balanced & inspiring year full of new learning opportunities with my colleagues & students who are excited to explore new ideas like computational thinking #dtk12chat
A2 #dtk12chat Increased student inquiry through year-long Purpose Projects. Hoping to continue prodding Admin to let me run @projectwayfindr (you HAVE to read about it!). In all, the year's going to be an exciting story full of amazing characters.
A2 hope to create real #designthinking experiences and @HQPBL units with teachers. Connect @AGSHurricanes to greater Atlanta community. Connect Diversity,Equity&Inclusion with STEAM #dtk12chat
I don't think that you can't dream too big- they need this and what they take with your experience will be so much more that will serve them better in life #dtk12chat
Hi All. I'm new to the chat and I'm in MA. I've started courses to pursue a graduate degree in education. I work at UMass Amherst Libraries Digital Media Lab. Could anyone recommend gamification resouces for STEM subjects?. #dtk12chat
I don't think that you can't dream too big- they need this and what they take with your experience will be so much more that will serve them better in life #dtk12chat
A2: I hope to inspire staff to try something new with me and to empower them to also try out a new idea on their own; I dream of truly integrating IDEAS across disciplines with meaningful projects #dtk12chat
A3 Great question - We have to help our S understand that joy is important and something that they should have in the lives #dtk12chat We must create a culture where S is valued and empowered to share their gifts
A3. Yes let's! Let's sprinkle unexpected and surprising mini moments through our days. Let's design learning experiences that put kids right in the thick of the topic in the wild. Let's use our students' loves to spark our learning! #dtk12chat
Especially since school can be a place where joy quickly fades for many students. #Whatif going to school was the most joyful part of a child's day? #dtk12chat
A3b. And also! As a teacher of English Language Arts, I hope we can learn that joy is in and of itself a good reason to learn something, read something, and do something! #dtk12chat
We are building upon last years work with @SCADdotedu, we are starting to working with global village project (provide education for refugee girls) #dtk12chat
A3 You wanna promote joy? Have kids ID what they hate and, at regular, strategic moments, remove this stuff from their world. My man Hillel points the way: “That which is hateful unto you do not do to your neighbor." #dtk12chat
A3: @stumpteacher posted a thought about fun being an essential part to the learning experience. I believe whether we teach 5 or 15 year-olds that we make sure learning has fun involved. #dtk12chat
Yes, and wouldn't it be fun to collaboratively create a "mini moments of joy" book across multiple classes, with kids brainstorming/sharing ideas to spark joy at school? #dtk12chat

A3: I think joy is manifested in gratitude. Something I think about in my personal life & use to tap into a few years ago w students, but this is something that would be really beneficial to connect w/ again professionally & bring to my wok w schools. #dtk12chat
A3: Joy from freeing myself of fear of failure and embracing unknown; hopefully sharing and spreading that mindset to others so they also find joy in change #dtk12chat
Yes, and adults too! We've found that intentionally planning for joy in #PD events can make all the difference in sparking learning & happiness #dtk12chat
A3: @stumpteacher posted a thought about fun being an essential part to the learning experience. I believe whether we teach 5 or 15 year-olds that we make sure learning has fun involved. #dtk12chat
A3: stop taking things so seriously. make time to play. be willing to throw out the days plans and take the Ss out of the classroom #WhereLifeIs#dtk12chat
@MsMeservey --you might want to connect with @TheRealJamCam --he is recovering MS humanities teacher & is terrific with empathy & teaching students about different perspectives #dtk12chat
In reply to
@TheRealJamCam, @mpowers3, @SCADdotedu, @MsMeservey, @TheRealJamCam
A3 #dtk12chat Ah Joy! Start with Stevenson: “And the true realism, always and everywhere, is that of the poets: to find out where joy resides, and give it a voice far beyond singing. For to miss the joy is to miss all. In the joy of the actors lies the sense of any action” 1/2
We did a whole workshop on the power of moments during staff development --around intentionality & the designing of peak moments. It was very cool #dtk12chat
A3 #dtk12chat 2/2 Then read Dr. T. Armstong, "Awakening Genius." Joy is one the 12 quals. of Genius. Then... The Power of Moments. Then...back off, and take time to watch them...listen to them...Joy is, as a S in my 7th grade class once said, "like all 'Wow!' inside."
So many!! I LOVE leaving #notesinthewild, little notes for people to find. I'm scheming an art project for my Art 8/9 class to design an art installation to surprise and bring delight. #dtk12chat
Well, it is my bedtime over on the East Coast, so it is time for me to jump out, but thank you for adopting me into your chat tonight and I will look into all the WONDERFUL suggestions you gave! Thank you, thank you! #dtk12chat
A4. My immediate connection to this is that if we design purposeful, rich, and meaningful learning experiences for our students, then they will create purposeful, rich, and meaningful responses. #dtk12chat
A4 In our classroom, we are working with a high number of
"at-risk" S to help them see and celebrate their own gifts while furthering developing their gifts. it helps them to see self worth in who they are #dtk12chat
A4: designing learning experiences that are as authentic as possible. Always asking: Is it relevant? Meaningful? Real world? Not every moment has to be but enough to truly empower and engage ALL in learning — leaders, Ts, Ss, parents, communities. #dtk12chat
A4 #dtk12chat "The world is a story we tell ourselves about the world. " When design brings into existence what wasn't there or what alters our perception, the garden of forking paths that is the future grows. We shift the possible.
right now they are looking at some of the everyday things we interact with and looking for "what ifs" around them. one group is looking to create a divider for the "bus tubs" in the caf. to make lunch clean up faster #dtk12chat
A5: I feel like every lesson I do is a prototype :) Definitely when designing learning experiences for adults--I am constantly modifying & shifting based on feedback (even facial expressions :) #dtk12chat
I really like the idea of this, create diff. prototypes, listen to needs of each other, build a culture of collaboration right off the bat....
Teamwork prototype
Mindfullness prototype
Feedback cycle prototype
Inquiry prototypes would help #dtk12chat
Shared student resources. Pencils, glue, scissors, etc. HMW care for them so we can all benefit from them? It seems like a minor thing but it's one of those things that zaps my joy! Need my students' help with that one. #dtk12chat
A5 #dtk12chat If we're prototyping, for me, it's more like drafting stories. My classes are based upon a notion of stories, perhaps Hero's Journey, but also like #imaginED Kieran Egan's work (see @perfinker and @CIRCE_SFU.
So my class's story is an iterative feedback loop
we're not fully in the makes just yet. They are finding out what their capacity is by just tinkering with different ideas. we are slowly (intentionally) getting familiar with empathy, feedback, and prototyping cycles #dtk12chat
A4: For me, I hope to have Ss make connections across content areas, increase their skills of creativity and having more possibilities for them to pursue their ideas #dtk12chat
Ooh I bet that will lead to some awesome prototypes & designs!! I do love clear, over-the-door shoe racks for supplies though - everyone can see them, see where they go, see who's putting them away :) #dtk12chat

love how you look at this challenging issue in the classroom - I have never thought of it like this, but it does zap joy since it diminishes supplies others could use to create something great #dtk12chat
A5 Prototype a class chat! Students should get in on the fun. Hell, they could be part of #dtk12chat. Prototype inter-generational real-time digital social learning. Or some such.
A5: for me it is all about helping leaders & teachers engage w/ empathy and create feedback loops to start trying things out (small pro types can = big successes in the end) #dtk12chat
That is one advantage MS & older have over K-5. When I taught 1st grade, I hd to train myself to reiterate immediately because I had forgotten a year later #dtk12chat
A6. Brene Brown says empathy is about connection and sympathy is about disconnection. If we practice empathy for one another, then we feel connected: to each other, to ourselves, to our topics, to our places. #dtk12chat
and time is lost trying to track down what someone needs when it's not where it's 'supposed' to be.. but I guess could be an opportunity to pause and have Ss design solutions #dtk12chat
A6 #dtk12chat let's equate that empathy with deep listening (to understand) . So listening to yourself and your students and then prototyping different futures for this year's class is probably a great start.
A6 In a healthy ecosystem, empathy is the atmosphere everyone swims in. #dtk12chat Though how people swim in an atmosphere, as opposed to, say, a pool, remains a mystery...
Each year I turn to Brene Brown's work for inspiration to live each school day with #empathy and to help my students find empathy with their peers! #dtk12chat
A6: I agree — emapthy forges connection. Also engage constantly w questions and asking for feedback regarding people’s experience in your school. Don’t assume, rather be curious. #dtk12chat
A6: empathy for myself to find projects that inspire me; empathy for colleagues who struggle w/change - to do baby steps; empathy for students by not rushing through lessons because of time, but letting them guide where we go #dtk12chat
Our 7th graders do an engineering challenge that is similarish but I feel like they jump too fast into high res prototypes--love the cardboard boxes for prototyping. #dtk12chat

I am but I can’t dive into the #dtk12chat LIVE (although Im keeping an eye on it) as I have a work assignment I need to complete ASAP… I know this is a killer Power Hour convo I will circle back too.. Thanks for checking in
My current goal: I want to make time to think deeply since I feel like I've been playing catch up since new staff development (over a month ago) #dtk12chat
A10. This week I'm going to design a protocol that lets my students really deeply reflect on their learning after a provocation or a experience. #dtk12chat
we also just spent some time learning and using conditional statements in Scratch. I hope to incorporate Makey Makeys or other micro controllers in the next iterations #dtk12chat

Q10: @DesignEdTodaywork has been primarily focused on Ts but using the DT process for our own work, leadership coaching has been requested a lot, so this is a new & exciting direction I’m focusing on to make sure our work is ultimately impactful for schools. #dtk12chat
