Welcome to #AppleEDUChat! It's time to share ideas and experiences as we discuss how digital badging and micro credentialing can be used to inspire student and teacher growth! Please introduce yourself!
What is Digital Badging? A digital badge is a record of an accomplishment, skill, knowledge, or competence that can be earned in any learning environment by students of teachers and displayed somewhere publicly. #AppleEDUChat
Hi all - went from sunny warm Phoenix to snowy, cold Maine Yes, there is snow on the ground and delays today here in the Northwoods! #AppleEDUchat Mia tweeting from the north
Welcome to #AppleEDUChat! It's time to share ideas and experiences as we discuss how digital badging and micro credentialing can be used to inspire student and teacher growth! Please introduce yourself!
A1. Our district is ready to launch our first micro credential "The Digital Instructor." We use our LMS with a direct API into Badgr to award the credential once earned. The hardest part was deciding what was worth a badge and what was just a fundamental skill. #AppleEDUchat
Hey Everyone! Madi Wilcoxson from Norman, OK! I am an undergraduate student at the University of Oklahoma studying Special Education with HQ’s in Elementary Education and Social Studies Education. #AppleEDUchat
A1. Have skills you want ALL new teachers in your district to have? Design a digital badging system to promote and track their understanding! Reward their hard work! #AppleEDUchat
A1: we haven’t done this yet. It’s a discussion but nothing concrete yet. Instead, we started with a bingo card of tech. Teachers compete and earn physical buttons to display on their lanyards. #appleeduchat

A1: Our district awards Professional Development for Apple Teacher badges. But would love to see this option in other areas. And include students. Excited to get some great ideas here tonight! #AppleEDUchat
The best I've seen in our research is the work done at Aurora public schools. Their badging is tied in with local business and gets students credentialed from community partners, not just stickers from school.
#AppleEDUChat
A1- This is our district’s first go at digital badging and we currently offer them for online courses in tech topics as well as non-tech topics. A badge represents completion of a course, but can be for anywhere from 6-25 contact hours. #AppleEDUChat
A1: in my digital technology education class, we use badges for multiple workshops and assignments. We learn about them from the standpoint of how an educator can use them, but also from the students point of view. We all love getting our badges!! #AppleEDUchat
A1: focus on staff collaborating during team time to earn badges but then going further and integrating project ideas. We pushed the first part but need to work on the second! #AppleEDUchat
@meredithedtech do you have any public facing info to share about what the tech and non-tech topics are? What participation rate have you seen? #AppleEDUchat

I'd like to start working with our HS tech interns to develop programs for students to complete. Need to find time to make it happen. They're incredibly busy! #AppleEDUchat
Hi! 👋🏻 Traci from Montana - tech integration with k-2 Ss & Ts. Excited to join in, as we are beginning to use digital badging w Ts that we work with in a PD group called TILT. (Teachers Integrating & Learning Technology) #appleeduchat
Each credential is open-ended. Students start them on their own, teachers have agency to award a badge when a student shows competency in the area. Companies have specific programs can follow for creds. #appleeduchat
A2. Digital badges aren't that much different from the old school Boy Scout Badges that have been around for a 100 years. Digital badges are a visual representation that represents a specific skill or competency. #AppleEDUChat
A2. Students get recognized for their understanding. Badging can allow students to move through content at their own pace because once they have demonstrated competency they can move on to something new. #AppleEDUchat
A2 It can motivate those Ss who enjoy that type of recognition. It’s also an easy way for Ts and classroom visitors to see what areas Ss have mastered. #AppleEDUchat
Hey @ddburkey - you’ve had some success with this; want to share about how your seniors used their badges to defeat the zombie apocalypse? #AppleEDUChat
A2: They serve as a visual representation of accomplishment, and they are not a grade. I think both of these ideas can bring out joy in learning. #appleeduchat
A2. Digital badges aren't that much different from the old school Boy Scout Badges that have been around for a 100 years. Digital badges are a visual representation that represents a specific skill or competency. #AppleEDUChat
A2: Not only is it a good tracking system for teachers to assess the progress of students, but it also offers a sense of completion and pride for the student. Here is a sample from my badge page. The green checks are succesfully completed. #AppleEDUchat
Is anyone working within the Open Badges (certifiable and verifiable) format? That's one thing we did intentionally - not just stickers. There's data there. #appleeduchat
Actually only theoretical badges - we celebrated the staff with Apple Pie at the beginning of last year because we had almost 100% complete - just needed our new teachers to get certified. #celebrateeverything#AppleEDUchat
Students and teachers can use the digital badges not only to show what they know/have mastered but also as a way of identifying themselves as someone that others can go to if they have questions or need help with that thing/skill #appleeduchat
A1: I've done digital badging through platforms like Edmodo. Coaches in our district previously printed badges for teachers for PD. @iCoachLindsay, @mrstechfarlin and I currently continue this, but digitally, so teachers can place them into a portfolio site.#AppleEDUChat
One of our discussions internally was having badges expire. We have several that are only good for a year or two because things change so fast. Important to stay on top of skills/practice.
#appleeduchat
A2: I did do digital brag tags with kids and they collected them in a ebook. They loved randomly and
Surprisingly recieving them striaght to their iPad #AppleEDUchat
Other ideas we have tried to put our minds around to add to our digital badging/mico- credentialing program: Inclusive Educator, Collaborator, Formative Assessment Master, Reflective Educator...to name a few. #AppleEDUchat
A2 It can definitely be a time-saver for faculty - a quick and easy way to electronically provide a list of which students have and have not mastered a particular competency. #AppleEDUchat
A2- it can help build engagement if the badges are tailored around students unique interests. Not sure that a one size fits all model will reach every student 🤔 #AppleEDUchat
How are you assessing? We went back and forth on vocab. Skills are easy to assess (can you do it?). Competency needed to be demonstrated, so those are in their own badge class, after you've shown skill.
#appleeduchat
Here’s the link to @ddburkey ‘s paper- the digital badging helped student attitudes & got them involved with desirable above-and-beyond actions #AppleEDUChathttps://t.co/KqGxd8vUg0
We're not offering money for ours (we can't), but I do see people self-identifying as needing help in some of our courses, and they're jumping in on their own. #appleeduchat
In reply to
@alfredsiha, @HollyMecher, @bwphillips70
I think students and adults alike enjoy working toward a goal and then earning the recognition with something tangible such as a badge #AppleEDUchat#AppleTeacher It is very satisfying and fun to share
A2. Students need to see value in the badges and know that other outside of their school will recognize them. That is the power of the CTE Certifications. How do we harness that power! #AppleEDUchat
A2: These are things we haven’t even thought of or discussed at our school, but I can’t wait to bring the ideas back! Student badging would be such a confindence boost for our kids to highlight their strengths! #AppleEDUchat
If you're using @Canvaslms, it's the official badging platform now. They have some killer admin features and a /really/ sweet pathway tool to lay out an entire course or tree of credentials that build/branch off of one another.
https://t.co/EUk8aHu87u#appleeduchat
A2: It can be a great way to really promote student leadership in the classroom for experts on certain topics or resources/apps. Students like the challenge, but I like to offer a variety to collect to build confidence. Almost like a choose your own adventure. #AppleEDUChat
A2: we’ve also had a lot is success using competency badging for access to tools in our MakerSpaces! Sharing who is badged on what helps Ss know who to ask for help #AppleEDUchat
A3. One of the greatest assets of the https://t.co/yVcJogSZ2n program are the resources that go with it. The badge is cool and the quizzes provide a level of assessment but the real value is in the resources that Apple provides teachers. #AppleEDUChat
Q3 Apple gives you the tools to be able to publicly share your achievement. That get people asking questions and starting conversations south own they can learn and earn #AppleEDUchat
Skills are just quizzes right now, ie, 'can you use the thing?' Those open up an opportunity for portfolio-based evidence, coaching, and short-term PLCs for specific goal achievement. #AppleEDUchat
That was one of our driving forces behind our Teacher Badging system. We want to create a way for teachers to know who the experts are that might just be down the hall! #appleEDUchat
A2: we’ve also had a lot is success using competency badging for access to tools in our MakerSpaces! Sharing who is badged on what helps Ss know who to ask for help #AppleEDUchat
A3) Apple Teacher is truly self-paced learning that directly applies to classroom activities. Earning badges has become a goal for teachers each year. #AppleEDUchat
I refer teachers back to them all the time! They always think once they get the badge, they dont need to use them anymore. What a great free source of info. #AppleEDUchat
A3. One of the greatest assets of the https://t.co/yVcJogSZ2n program are the resources that go with it. The badge is cool and the quizzes provide a level of assessment but the real value is in the resources that Apple provides teachers. #AppleEDUChat
A3. A badge can be created by an accreditor for any reason at all. Several training websites, like https://t.co/yVcJogBnDN have started using badges to recognize proficiencies by trainees around specific programs or tasks. #AppleEDUchat
A3: Our hope is to help develop leaders from the Badging as well as allow principals to see a different side of the teacher and what they can bring to their school. #AppleEduChat
A3: I believe digital badging can be used to help with PD for educators by offering a set of professional credentials like Apple Teacher that can be earned online. Earning these badges expands the knowledge of teachers and adds to their expertise #appleeduchat
A3- biggest reason badging works in our district is because the PD is now differentiated. The list of topics grows each week, and while some rockstars competitively go after as many as they can, others engage just with topics that interest them. Win/win either way #AppleEDUchat
#appleteacher provides the ibooks & resources for teachers to work through learning apps on their own time - anywhere anytime learning whenever is convenient for them and at their own pace #appleeduchat
In my role, that’s left up to the faculty. But you’re right - there are various levels/stages where there are opportunities to award badges. #AppleEDUchat
A3: Apple Teacher is a perfect jumping off point for educators learning not just the buttons, but how to create with iWork on Macs and iPads. Earning badges builds the confidence to transform learning for our kids. #appleeduchat
I think most orgs are still looking for a sustainable, meaningful structure. A lot of higher ed was in on this several years back, a lot have petered out, though. #appleeduchat
It’s so helpful that the #AppleTeacher quiz questions link to the spot in the resource where you can learn the correct answer when exploring the feedback #AppleEDUchat
A2: Badging in the classroom lets you extend learning and challenge kids but also find strengths of all kids - I have badges for everything - photography - kindness - creativity - coding - app smasher - writing - thoughtful .... not for grades. #AppleEDUchat
A3. Just like with students, it can showcase trainings a teacher has participated in to create discussion or be a leader with that particular resource. Our Apple Vanguard groups share their portfolios with their buildings so the whole building can continue to learn. #AppleEDUChat
Love that it is tailored to you and your classroom. This could be replicated by any educator. Just think of the things where want your students to grow #appleteacher#AppleEDUchat

I struggle to see value in programs that measure time rather than evidence. Problem is that time is easy to measure with computers, quality of work isn't. It takes a big time investment to make it work. #appleeduchat
I'm excited that digital badges now work with @Schoology on the iPad - Completing self=paced PD courses could now earn teachers digital badges to show what they've learned #appleeduchat
Well I’m sitting on the sidelines watching. This is something I want to, but don’t know enough about. So thank you to everyone sharing your knowledge. #appleeduchat
Yeah, we pull ours into a mentor/mentee role to help achieve specific instructional goals (time with me and our other coaches, really). After step 2, they move on to step three where *they* become the mentor to others. #appleeduchat
I couldn’t agree more. The materials in the #AppleTeacher Learning Center can be used to create active hands on learning PD where teachers share stories of success and brainstorm ideas with each other! These elements can have a positive impact on school culture. #AppleEduChat
A3. One of the greatest assets of the https://t.co/yVcJogSZ2n program are the resources that go with it. The badge is cool and the quizzes provide a level of assessment but the real value is in the resources that Apple provides teachers. #AppleEDUChat
We're trying to head that way with new teacher orientation. It would really open up a lot of our time with them if we can offload skill acquisition. #appleeduchat
A4: would love to build some kind of district board/platform of badges earned of educators across the district so teachers know the experts they can go to. #AppleEDUchat
Exactly. It needs to be about the resources, lessons and projects..not about the quizzes. AppleTeacher is just about getting teachers into the pool! Then the hard work starts! Using it to improve instruction, student engagement and student achievement #AppleEDUchat!

A4: We’ve used badging in @Schoology to showcase and celebrate professional learning. We are currently exploring using Badgr with Schoology and our new digital portfolio platform, @bulbapp#appleeduchat

In one course called Video in the Clsssoom, teachers explore different apps and tools, creating a video with each one. Then for the final project they use one of the video tools with students. #AppleEDUchat
Once they have a collection of skills, they get the Foundation credential. To earn the Established credential, they build up skills (more quizzes) and submit a portfolio, work with me, etc. Self assessment and reflection are critical. #AppleEDUchat
A3 It can be used as a benchmark of skill. If you’re an Apple Teacher, then I know that you have a certain level of understanding of particular apps and devices. That could lead to involvement in particular projects where those skills are needed. #AppleEDUchat
A4 So... I've been considering the move to badging as I have developed my PK-12 math program. I would LOVE to acknowledge high quality implementation of impactful instructional routines in the classroom....then, leverage this to share the love. #AppleEDUchat#notsubtle
A5 I have a badge board for over winter break! Student get a badge for doing some optional academic work over our 3 weeks off. Motivates them to do the work #AppleEDUchat
For step one, it's short and sweet to help build momentum. We use visual design elements to differentiate between a specific skill (Gmail, below) and a competency.
#appleeduchat
Portfolio submissions are much more time consuming but a much more powerful way to assess competency. Particularly if we require reflection as part of the submission. #AppleEDUchat
A4: SeeSaw and some skill-based apps provide badges for mastery but I like the idea of badging students to highlight soft skills as well! #AppleEDUchat
We run a risk making intrinsic motivation extrinsic (ick!) BUT it appears when the badges have an additional function - like communicating who can supervise what in the makerspace - that risk drops #AppleEDUChat
A5 Digital badging is something that shouldnt be forced on educators. Like another thing on their to do to do list. They must be truely passionate to earn their badge to become an expert and have some kind of celebration! #AppleEDUchat
We only have one right now - Digital Instructor - that has modules based on our tech availability. They have to complete x modules to move forward with competencies. Here's our Google vs PowerSchool credentials.
#appleeduchat
A5: I believe it’s important to not only award badges to our high fliers. We must celebrate growth wherever it happens. Our educators and learners all come from different backgrounds and different starting points. #AppleEDUchat
Who does the portfolio review in that scenario? I’d love to do a lot of this, but if it’s just me reviewing, that’s a ton of work, just for badges! #appleeduchat
A5- it has motivated staff to learn about a topic that’s relevant to them. No more “blanket” Pd but instead topics that matter to their classroom. This is still a growing year though, so I hope to have many more offerings by next year. Course building takes time ⌚️ #AppleEDUchat
A few options: Get a committee together. A group of teachers. Make one badge...becoming a reviewer. Build up a few teachers to help become part of that process. #AppleEDUchat
Who does the portfolio review in that scenario? I’d love to do a lot of this, but if it’s just me reviewing, that’s a ton of work, just for badges! #appleeduchat
We use keys of excellences a school wide approach to behavior. What about a badge board that allowed teachers to recognize positive behavior. Students could earn multiple each time they are caught demonstrating a key. Thoughts?? #AppleEDUchat
A5. I think it is ok that digital badging may not be for everyone. However, it can be a great connection to incorporate gamification into your classroom or content area. I really like the comments others have made on benchmarks. #AppleEDUChat
That's why it's critical to design the pathway intentionally. I don't need to see a portfolio item on your email use. I want to see a lesson, examples of communication mechanisms, student growth, etc. It's the collection of skills that gets credentialed. #appleeduchat

We mostly separate courses based on teaching pedagogy. Apps change but fundamental usage in the classroom is key. That’s why it’s “Video in Classroom” not just “Clips” or “iMovie”. We do still have some that are app specific- @Seesaw will be coming up shortly. #AppleEDUChat

@amyattinger, @bennettscience, @Seesaw
Never thought of doing PD this way!! I am so excited to bring this idea to our staff - I was thinking solely of the Apple Teacher badges but opening up the various PD platforms that offer badges brings learning and leadership (& ownership) to everyone! #AppleEDUchat
Terri Cullen Assoc Prof @oueducation I do badging with my preservice teachers. We use @badgelist because it is free and open - and they can use it in their portfolios after graduation. #appleeduchat
I love this because they can take this with them. Do you have examples of the badges they get? Would school district's where they apply benefit from seeing these? #AppleEDUchat
Terri Cullen Assoc Prof @oueducation I do badging with my preservice teachers. We use @badgelist because it is free and open - and they can use it in their portfolios after graduation. #appleeduchat
a6) We do reviews of Apps, attending PD (where a selfie is documentation), interviewing other teachers, and #Appleteacher as a badge. (badge in a badge? huh) #AppleEDUchat
A6- Use of digital portfolios w/ Ss, Effective Co-teaching, Differentiating for Gifted Learners, Teaching the Whole Child (SEL), Video in the Classroom, and also completion of Book Studies (like #TLAP and student engagement activities) #AppleEDUChat
A certain badge is an outward sign that that skill is deemed important to someone, somewhere. It's also attainable and not in short supply. If the benefits outweigh the costs, I say go for it. #AppleEDUchat
A6: Worksheet making. Transparency integration. 😂 Really, though, awarding badges for not just learning new skills, but for evidence of embodying our district’s mission and core values. #AppleEDUchat
Right now we have teachers getting their Apple Teacher Badge and Google Level 1 certification. Our hope is to really develop this and grow our PD for our teachers and them move to students. #AppleEDUChat
A6: I think for teachers, badges should be for visible shifting of thinking instead of for using a specific app...focus more on global collaboration, addressing real world issues in the classroom, community engagement #AppleEduChat
Pure PD right now. Our original design would have influenced the pay schedule, but we moved away from that because of larger circumstances. #appleeduchat
We tried to get the Teachers Association and Administration to look at including it in the contract but that would be a HUGE step. There are models where you can include PD, or Badging as part of increasing salary or step. But mostly PD for us #AppleEDUchat
I love this, we use @Showbie for our digital leaders (1 amongst other groups we have too) but how do you deal with students on #Twitter? Do you have a student account or is it students created work and then teacher uploads? #AppleEDUChat

Agreed - micro credentials are not about being able to use a tool for the tool itself. Rather, how it is applied and leveraged to enhance learning, communicate or connect globally, advance understanding or creation of new knowledge #AppleEDUchat
Rob from PA dropping in late to learn more about badging. New to me in higher ed but learned that our @HACC_info LMS Brightspace/D2L now has badges! #AppleEDUChat
A6 You could use it for almost anything, but be careful. I’ve seen cases where it was overdone - a badge was made for everything. It can get out of control and people stop taking it seriously. #AppleEDUchat
It's literally just started, so the people in there now know they needed something like this and jumped in. I send reminders and prods, but it's totally voluntary, so I can't force people to learn things :-)
#appleeduchat
As we learn, we'll build out courses that have high interest. The main audience is folks who can't make after school stuff, really. So, it's a subset of the whole at this point.
#appleeduchat
A6: While it is great to use for professional development, I agree with @jdeinhammer that this would be a great opportunity to focus on strengths within content areas or topics. The go-to's in the district who can share ideas with others on their badge topics. #AppleEDUChat
A7- each badge has a classroom component in which Ts try something new with Ss. This helps them hone their craft, and incorporate new and innovative ideas. Then we follow up with support. Also, never underestimate the power of turning badges into actual stickers 😉 #AppleEDUchat
A7. Anyone have additional resources or articles to help those on this chat interested in starting a digital badging program at their school? #AppleEDUchat
a7) one of the most important things is public recognition. encourage sharing or maybe even awarding them visibly. When our faculty earned #appleteacher we put a sign on their door #appleEduChat
A7 Let's not make it 'one more thing' ... instead, let's connect them to what matters and use them to acknowledge the hard work and commitment to learning that is already happening. Then, let's leverage the excitement to encourage others. #AppleEDUchat
a7) for those attending #iste19, I really recommend coming a day early and going to #Badgesummit it is a great conversation and all the major badge grantors/apps are there.. Its a one stop shop. #appleeduchat
A7. Anyone have additional resources or articles to help those on this chat interested in starting a digital badging program at their school? #AppleEDUchat
Here's the research and proposal I wrote for ours at Elkhart. Pulls in several resources and articles on successful initiatives. Links to research/examples included: https://t.co/Jl2KrSMhyW#appleeduchat
A7: Districts can make sure that badges aren’t just awarded, but celebrated. We can also make sure that we involve educators and learners in the creation of the badges. Make sure that we are celebrating and aligning to our district’s values. #AppleEDUchat
A8. Transparency and a public understanding of what earning the credential means. Everyone who earns it or sees someone that earns it should know exactly what skills, knowledge or talents the person has because they have the digital badge. #AppleEDUchat
A7: Districts can make sure that badges aren’t just awarded, but celebrated. We can also make sure that we involve educators and learners in the creation of the badges. Make sure that we are celebrating and aligning to our district’s values. #AppleEDUchat
a8. FERPA is a concern.. make sure that students know that badges will be open and shared. Its a great opportunity for digital citizenship as well. #appleeduchat
A7: Thinking something along the lines of having a district Learning Playground where educators can truely earn it once they share their expertise “Help me earn my badge my coming to my booth!” Badge Bootcamp!?🤔🤔#AppleEDUchat
A7 For faculty and staff, make it part of assessing job performance. In higher ed, I’ve seen them used to demonstrate commitment to PD as part of the Promotion and Tenure process. #AppleEDUchat
I think there's a huge opportunity for teachers/admins/students to unite around these programs. It can't be skinny - make a deep commitment and put effort beyond 'app certifications' into design and implementation.
#appleeduchat
a8) I know some schools that use an advisory board to design the badges by local community and industry members so they have immediate value and weight. #appleeduchat
I struggle with this. Personally, I have a hard time finding PD that fits what I need to be effective. Does that mean I can't advance in practice if I don't participate in in-district programs? #appleeduchat
A7 Let's not make it 'one more thing' ... instead, let's connect them to what matters and use them to acknowledge the hard work and commitment to learning that is already happening. Then, let's leverage the excitement to encourage others. #AppleEDUchat
Q8. Deciding what you are going to credential and what are the requirements for demonstrating competency of that badge. Quizzes are the easiest to track but portfolios are more rigorous and meaningful. #AppleEDUchat
A8- I love how @MrsKemper worded it, “don’t make it ‘one more thing’.” Make the topics for badging meaningful, and the process of acquiring them one that is challenging yet attainable and will teach effective skills for meeting our Ss needs. #AppleEDUchat
A special thanks to @bennettscience. An amazing colleague in @ElkhartSchools. He is working hard everyday to make amazing things happen for the teachers and students in our district. Digital Badging is his passion and I love that I get to work with him everyday! #AppleEDUchat
Have been called away. Really look forward to going through the chat tomorrow! Thank you so much @WesMolyneaux for an idea & resource filled #AppleEDUchat
I was working on a badging idea last year that would have a puzzle made up badges that could be displayed by the learners. I am going to find the right place to do that yet!!! #appleeduchat
A8: it is important to have all levels involved and offering support for the system to work. It takes a team to make the shift and movement to happen. #AppleEDUChat
a8. One think I love about @BADGELIST is that students can include artifacts (videos, pictures, etc..) Documentation is more about multiple ways to show. #AppleEDUchat
Q8. Deciding what you are going to credential and what are the requirements for demonstrating competency of that badge. Quizzes are the easiest to track but portfolios are more rigorous and meaningful. #AppleEDUchat
Let me get this straight- Acting AG Whitaker should recuse himself from oversite of the Mueller probe because of his past political activities but Hillary's personal lawyer can lead the potential prosecution of Roger Stone ?
https://t.co/3uowkB9MSX
So glad I made it home from my *chilly* run in time for this evening's #AppleEDUchat - It's comforting to know my friends are navigating the same path.
