A1. All transactions are investments in classroom culture. Work hard in advance of incidents to ensure your group is sensitive to the impact/consequences of decisions. Then, when issues do occur, you simply guide/repair as always, vs. assume an authoritarian role. #Edugladiators
A1: Management sets the tone. We need to reflect the kind of culture we want in how we act. I extend choice and hope that those who work against a positive culture learn by my example and those of the rest of the class. #edugladiators
A1 Hmmm... I think we can switch that question to: how does the culture of the class contribute to classroom mgt? When my Ss feel safe, respected & heard, classroom mgt becomes easy #EduGladiators
A1 I am going to hype up @responsiveclass for this answer. If you are not familiar with it, check it out. It's what I've been using for years to create positive classroom community. Just all sorts of awesome! #EduGladiators
#edugladiators A1 Classroom culture is everything! Once had a studen t who had a 10% in my class but whouldn’t drop because he said “I love this class!” Ha
A1) We have a social contract collaboratively written with young adults. We work together to be accountable & grow. Developing our professional voice gives purpose. #EduGladiators
A1: Classroom management is EVERYTHING..makes or breaks the culture of your class. Positive classroom community stems from each S knowing their role, positive reinforcement, reteaching expectations, & holding Ss accountable. Bring in humor & S interests #EduGladiators
A1. Great start - the way you proactively set the stage leads to less misbehavior... the way you respond to misbehavior affects the relationships you seek to build which in turn changes the culture and climate. #EduGladiators
A1: It establishes what kind of environment you want to have. Have clear expectations and Ss will feel safe. However, becoming a drill sergeant can stifle any creativity in your culture. Find the balance. #EduGladiators@ERobbPrincipal@PHausTech@Stella_Pollard
A1: Class meetings are highly encouraged after specific, consistent modeling strategies by our teachers to create a voice for our students to problem solve as a team #EduGladiators
A1: Classroom management sets the standards for all parties. It provides clear expectations for how learning will be accomplished. Students must be involved in this process from Day 1. #EduGladiators
If you have a Respectful culture in your classroom based on Relationships with your students, you greatly reduce the incidents of misbehavior. And the need to deal with behavior at all.
#EduGladiators
I love this. I'm not a fan of CM either. I think classroom culture or community really makes the point that it is about all of us contributing to the space & energy! #EduGladiators
A1: shared ownership is Paramount in my classroom. I never want students feeling they're walking into "my room". I make no decisions without student voice. #edugladiators
A1: this sign about my door is the first thing students see when they come to ELA. Our classroom environment is that they only need to be a student in the room, leave everything else behind. Leaves discipline to a minimum. #EduGladiators
Very true! I’ve noticed that the classroom management challenges I run into are much less severe than some of others and I attribute that to the culture I develop in my room. #EduGladiators
A1) I like to use the term #ClassroomMotivation because it empowers students to take ownership of their learning thus enhancing the culture of the class. #EduGladiators
A1:I believe that classroom mgmt. plays a huge role in Ts being able to teach and Ss being able to learn. Ss can't learn w/distractions, plus part of learning is the ability to focus. I create this with repetition, fairness, firmness, and consistency. #EduGladiators
A1: Classroom management is a life skill learned over time by Tt. It is based on relationships and willingness not to engage in power struggles w Ss. High expectations, consistency, and you have to have an entertainment factor to hook Ss #EduGladiators
A2. It is like a relationship contract between each student & teacher. It is how we treat each other. If it is negative & oppresive, students will act out. #EduGladiators
A1: this sign above my door is the first thing students see when they come to ELA. Our classroom environment is that they only need to be a student in the room, leave everything else behind. Leaves discipline to a minimum. #EduGladiators
A1 I try2remind myself that they are just kids. I also try2remember what it was like to be a kid. They are still learning how to manage their own behaviors. Honestly, as an adult I am still trying to manage a lot of behaviors. We need to be patient and model a lot. #EduGladiators
A1 Emphasize the power of choice. Ss have to make their own decisions. I am there to help them make more good decisions than bad. Also, use empathy when helping Ss recover from a bad decision. #EduGladiators
A1 Classroom management is walking that fine line between having a controlled, productive learning space while also still building strong relationships T to S & S to S. Working hard to create a positive TEAM mentality-we're in this together. #EduGladiators
Does culture set the tone for management or does management set the tone for culture?
The teacher has the power. Do they have to relinquish it first in order to set the culture? #EduGladiators
A1 Hmmm... I think we can switch that question to: how does the culture of the class contribute to classroom mgt? When my Ss feel safe, respected & heard, classroom mgt becomes easy #EduGladiators
Classroom management is everything. It sets the tone for student expectations and behavior. Remaining positive and giving positive feedback elevates student performance. They need to feel good about themselves! #EduGladiators#conversechat
A1. It’s important that all students have a voice in creating the non negotiables for their learning space. Everyone needs to feel safe and know that they belong. #EduGladiators
A1) I teach “classroom management” at our local university in the evenings. I have informally changed the name to classroom culture, for I think that when we aspire to a higher place than just managing students, we create a place of connections, community. #EduGladiators
A1 The absolute core of great classroom management is RESPECT - for yourself, your craft, your kids, and your space. Crafting strong lesson plans, facitating quality lesion plans, loving yourself, and loving your kids #EduGladiators
A1 Classroom management tells the student whether they are valued, their voice and opinion matters. They want boundaries, they want organization. They also want to be respected and have a voice in the process.
Establish early, revisit often. #EduGladiators
A1: Management & culture are all about respect. We have to respect our Ss and show we care about them as people.
You tell me what you believe but you show me what you value. Our actions need to value respect for all #EduGladiators
A1: Classroom management is EVERYTHING..makes or breaks the culture of your class. Positive classroom community stems from each S knowing their role, positive reinforcement, reteaching expectations, & holding Ss accountable. Bring in humor & S interests #EduGladiators
A1 #EduGladiators Classroom management must be proactive and established from the very beginning. Teachers should exhibit high expectations and establish a positive environment. My goal has always been to use 5 positives to every 1 negative when correcting student behavior.
Yes! Ss see how close we are as a 7th grade team and model our behavior with their friends. It's so great to see at the middle school level! #EduGladiators
A1 The absolute core of great classroom management is RESPECT - for yourself, your craft, your kids, and your space. Crafting strong lesson plans, facitating quality lesson plans, loving yourself, and loving your kids #EduGladiators
Setting clear expectations, routines in first 6 or so weeks. Taking the time to front load community goes a long way for the rest of the yr. Big supporter of @responsiveclass philosophy. #EduGladiators
Ah that's a challenging question. I don't know about power. But I definitely think Ss need to feel respected & cared for in order to show respect & caring. My tone seems to set the tone for the class. Is that power? I'm not sure. #EduGladiators
A1: Former ELA teacher - current HS AP - LOVE when I see teachers empowering students by shifting behavior management to them as a class with class contracts or norms. #EduGladiators
A1 Both Ts and Ps need to plan concrete, tangible, and consistent routines to object positivity into the classroom culture, not just focus on classroom rules and consequences. #EduGladiators

I believed it class is a community, everyone comes with strengths and weaknesses including me! We all need to work together and support each other #EduGladiators
We have all the power to begin with. Being the adult, being in charge of safety, disciplining a ss etc. How do we share that power is the hard question. #EduGladiators
Especially in middle school when Ss are starting to come into their own... teaching them negotiation and decision making skills will lead them to success beyond the classroom #EduGladiators
A1 Emphasize the power of choice. Ss have to make their own decisions. I am there to help them make more good decisions than bad. Also, use empathy when helping Ss recover from a bad decision. #EduGladiators
A1 Marian from Atlanta. I don’t “manage” Ss any more but guide them in a loving space. No clips or stoplights. I work to prove myself trustworthy.
Ex: Ss don’t “ask” to use the restroom, rather inform me. Issues are discussed with them privately.
#EduGladiators
A1: Classroom management happens if lessons are engaging, directions & expectations are clear, students have choice & voice, routines are set, and there is respect & trust. Takes a lot of thoughtful planning & listening to students! #EduGladiators
A1: Good morning, Amy from CA. It is the mood of the classroom. Well managed classrooms, where Ss feel safe and able to express themselves are where we see growth. #edugladiators
A1: Classroom management involves the structured routines with clear high expectations. A classroom can function effectively. A classroom with culture, adaptability, passion and love is a will thrive beyond expectations! #EduGladiators
A1) To that end, we come to see ourselves as creators of culture, creators of worlds. And that “creation” begins with a simple question l, “How do we want kids to feel when they enter our world?” That is what drives our decisions. #EduGladiators
A1: Good classroom management creates a culture in which kids feel safe, secure & comfortable taking risks - so they’re able to learn. Then even as “too cool for just about anything” teenagers they excitedly come ask you to go see their work on display! #EduGladiators
A2) For some reason we think that every day is going to be perfect, however if we build relationships that enhance expectations we can proactively teach and reteach expectations with clarity. Students will also take ownership and lead by example. #EduGladiators
A1 in surveying 5000 5-12 @NCSD grade students over the past 2 years, RESPECT was the number one trait our kids said made a great teacher #EduGladiators
A2 #EduGladiators CLassroom management is not discipline at all. You manage a store you do not discipline a store. Therefore, you manage a classroom you do not discipline a classroom.
A2 Management needs to be viewed through lens of building cooperative, collaborative community. Rules and consequences have their place but don’t speak to proactively developing our young people’s character and scholarship. #EduGladiators
A2 I see classroom management as so much more big picture than I do consequences. Management is more about how we all work together. Consequences are for one specific behavior. #EduGladiators
A1: With a deliberately created and fostered culture, classrooms are managed effortlessly. Relationships, collaboration, and voice run happy and productive classrooms. #EduGladiators
A2a: I think that mgmt. has to do with the daily expectations that build the classroom community. It's how the class runs on a daily basis. With punishment (I hate this word), it doesn't allow for correction and learning from mistakes. #EduGladiators
A1 I want my students to feel connected. To me. To each other. So we begin each period with what I call Smiles and Frowns. When we are connected we don’t have to be managed. #myroom#EduGladiators
Definitely, but I'd like to say there's more than that. A student who makes an error will more likely own it and learn from it when impact on the community is front and center. Best for teacher relationships to take a step into the background, on occasion. #EduGladiators
Absolutely! I always had great classroom management but saw some@of my colleagues who struggled. How can you help fellow Ts who is struggling with this? #EduGladiators
A2: Classroom management involves teaching and reteaching expectations with students. We're not expecting perfection from them, but we do expect reflection. Find the why behind the unwanted behavior and help them grow. #edugladiators
A2 Healthy classrooms rarely need to be managed, instead they are placed of mutual respect and curiosity. The core to this culture is well planned/executed learning opportunities undergirded by respect. #EduGladiators
A2: Management should be the tool that alleviates much of the "need" for punishment or consequence. Some Ss will push your management skills regardless. Our reaction in those moments is key in determining our class culture. #EduGladiators
A2: Managing your classroom w/Restorative Practices allow us to:
🔎Focus on learning
"Restorative practices equip schools with tools to ensure that learning occurs, not just punishment."
🔎Learn from mistakes
🔎Restore relationships
#EduGladiators
I so agree. Can't tell you how many Ss that have been sent to my office over the years have said about the T, "if s/he wants me to be respectful, s/he has to treat me with respect." I can't argue that. #EduGladiators
A2b: With consequences, the Ss is held accountable for his/her mistakes, is able to correct, with help or by themselves, and learn for that mistake. It's all about the growth of the S. #EduGladiators
A2) Reflection is such a powerful tool especially when things go awry. Collaborating after an error can build the skill to avoid again. Empowers learners to realize they do have control & many other options. #EduGladiators
A2: we have consistency in school wide and class room expectations- the key is to reteach, revisit, and reward Ss for positive behavior! Tt and Ss always feel great when I tell them how great they are behaving from the lunchroom, hallway, etc #EduGladiators
A2: when the right measures are in place, little management is needed...just like being an admin in a building...I can manage less and less more #EduGladiators
A2 Classroom management sets expectations for how we are treated and expected to treat others. Accountability to the fundamental of respect should always be the first point of focus when an issue arises. Reteach, refocus, move on. #EduGladiators
A2 Healthy classrooms rarely need to be managed, instead they are places of mutual respect and curiosity. The core to this culture is well planned/executed learning opportunities undergirded by respect. #EduGladiators
A2: Classroom management is a system in place to limit punishment and consequences. Those two won’t help or change a student’s behavior. Through positive interventions and reflection students can ask what they want to change. #EduGladiators#conversechat
Great follow to Q2! Research has shown Ss of color are disciplined more often & harshly. Classroom Management can disrupt the pipeline by Ts intentionally building relationships & class environment that is welcoming & respectful to all Ss. #EduGladiators
A2: Managing your classroom w/Restorative Practices allow us to:
🔎Focus on learning
"Restorative practices equip schools with tools to ensure that learning occurs, not just punishment."
🔎Learn from mistakes
🔎Restore relationships
#EduGladiators
If you have a relationship with them, you can offer suggestions. Hopefully you are a great model and they will ask for assistance and then be kind and offer it. #EduGladiators
Absolutely! I always had great classroom management but saw some@of my colleagues who struggled. How can you help fellow Ts who is struggling with this? #EduGladiators
A1: 2 way relationships of caring, respect & common goals. A positive, loving, structured tone day 1!Take time to get to know why the S in your room may do or say the things they do is critical & allows you as the T to respond in a way that meets their needs. #EduGladiators
A2: A highly effective classroom inspires everyone to have a voice. It inspires everyone to dream out loud, to share their experiences, and perspectives. It also encourages all S's to create the learning culture that best helps them grow and develop. #EduGladiators
A1: I love how so many folks have already responded that they don’t manage the classroom - I agree. Systems are for managing- I lead, empower, connect, and sometimes redirect. #EduGladiators
A2 setting clear expectations for class routines, offering students a lot of choice in response types and building relationships with each student is building a learning community #EduGladiators
A2: Again, unfortunately, management suggests the need for punishment/consequences. If we shift to the idea of culture it creates an environment where kids can feel connected, valued, respected. A place where they belong. A place where they are an individual. #EduGladiators
A2 Classroom mgt lays out a clear set of expectations AND give Ss strategies and practices to help meet them. When an expectation isn't met, we need to help them understand how their actions impact the team & then TEACH them the skills they need. #EduGladiators
#EduGladiators A2: when the right measures are in place, little management is needed...just like being an admin in a building...I can manage less and lead more #EduGladiators
A3 Well... good classroom mgt means there's usually no need for punishment or consequences (though as a believer in resortative justice, I see no need for punishment ever) #EduGladiators
A2: It certainly does but I think the answer is very culture specific. I would argue that region, SES, school size, etc all contribute to this. #EduGladiators
A2: Classroom management isn't about punishing Ss to keep the classroom comfortable & working, it's about creating a space where students make mistakes and have the chance to learn from them, learn the impact of their behavior, and be coached in their behavior! #EduGladiators
Sure but if a teacher feels exhausted managing or that it takes a great deal of T input to keep a class managed, they haven’t established the right culture. A classroom can very much manage itself with the right foundation built. #EduGladiators
A2) Classroom management is a system developed over years where you have plans in place for situations. Discipline is reactionary in the moment not reflecting #EduGladiators
A1 For classroom management & culture to coexist fruitfully, positively, sustainably, both demand doing *with* students rather than for them or to them. Prepositions matter™ & remind us that collaboration does, too. #edugladiators
A2: @bethhill2829 reminded us the other day that the word “discipline” comes from disciple to teach. Behavior management and conflict resolution has to be taught. #EduGladiators
In reply to
@EduGladiators, @SchleiderJustin, @bethhill2829
With consequences, though, they are not harsh. In my "little people world" a consequence to spilling your milk at snack would be getting paper towels and cleaning it up. I look at this as learning responsibility. #EduGladiators
And as #EduGladiators we can be afraid to have this convo. First step to recovery is admitting there is a problem...our Ss of color are not treated the same when it comes to Discipline. We MUST train our Ts in Restorative Justice practices & Culturally Responsive Teaching!
#EduGladiators@SchleiderJustin Yes actually on 3/8 TCHLN will hold its 3rd Annual Education Consortium featuring keynote Jerry Tello who will focus on Restorative Practices & Healing Centered Education.
🔳"What are we restoring for?"
A3: In the ideal world my management wouldn't prevent the naturally occurring conflict, it would model to my students how we solve those conflicts without escalation. #EduGladiators The reality is that is still a work in progress.
A2b: developing relationships with parents, Tt, and Ss! I am an active listener to concerns. They now that I genuinely care about them. Proud to say we have few discipline problems at FT Elm but we work hard to maintain a high standard both behavioral/academic #EduGladiators
A2 #EduGladiators Discipline is helping a child solve a problem. Punishment is making a child suffer for solving a problem. To raise problem solvers, focus on solutions not retribution. L.R. Knost

A1: I love how so many folks have already responded that they don’t manage the classroom - I agree. Systems are for managing- I lead, empower, connect, and sometimes redirect. #EduGladiators
A3: It can lessen conflicts by having clear & practiced routines, directions, & expectations. But the important thing to remember is that conflicts do arise, and we need to teach students how to express themselves & handle situations in productive & safe ways! #EduGladiators
A3: In the ideal world my management wouldn't prevent the naturally occurring conflict, it would model to my students how we solve those conflicts without escalation. #EduGladiators The reality is that is still a work in progress.
A2 It’s no longer ok to not openly have this dialogue. We are dishonest and complicit when we don’t address race and power explicitly. Ss see through this disingenuous behavior and don’t trust their edus. And positive culture doesn’t exist without it. #EduGladiators
February is #BlackHistoryMonth & next Saturday, #EduGladiators begins {NEW} series: We Shall Overcome! This isn't your average chat, nor will this series be your traditional #BHM topics!
We are excited to have CORE Warrior @D4Griffin3 kicks things off with "The Struggle"!
A3: Establish trust and build not just T-S relationships, but also S-S relationships. You're there to help them talk through conflict and teach resolution strategies. #edugladiators
A3: Setting up a community that is built on respect Ss learn how to disagree while still respecting each other. When they know they are respected & valued by everyone in the room, they feel safer and conflict becomes a teaching tool. #EduGladiators
A3 Consistency In redirection and consequences are key. Also, management isn’t always WHAT we are doing but HOW. We need to take our emotions out to ensure that management strategies best support about what’s best for Ss learning and not our ego/preferences. #EduGladiators
Do you know at all if those statistics stay the same no matter what the student population percentages are? As someone who lives in an area with a very, very small % of SOC (rural MN) I always wonder if this is still happening to our SOC. #EduGladiators
In reply to
@D4Griffin3, @mgrosstaylor, @SchleiderJustin
A3: When everyone has a stake in the learning culture, trust becomes a driving force. This force can be used to establish systems of communication and collaboration that optimizes student performance. #EduGladiators
A3 I know it’s difficult for some, but having a fascinating personality is an important tool that can prevent common poor decisions. Look up the work by @SallyHogshead#EduGladiators
A3 Focusing On classroom culture early is everything, ditch the curriculum at beginning of year and have a laser like focus upon classroom culture = far less conflict later #EduGladiators
A3: A thriving classroom with well-established rountines rooted in respect and equity that adapts to the continuous needs of students will rarely incur discipline issues. #EduGladiators
A2 Follow up: unfortunately, it has the potential to impact it devastatingly. So many factors that create potential for abuse and misuse of power. But if we focus on what we can control in our created classroom cultures we can create a different potential #EduGladiators
A3: We can’t always prevent conflict but I like a “check yourself” mentality. “Do I need an adult for this, can I just walk away, or can we talk this out?” Sometimes students need a moderator instead of a disciplinarian. #EduGladiators#conversechat
A3) younclassroom management should reduce those conflicts. It should also allow you to stay productive in class and still hold expectations #EduGladiators
Q3 #EduGladiators My classroom layout is weird - due to overcrowded science lab. It cannot be changed as cabinets & counters aren't getting moved. We used to have conflict when turning in papers due to traffic jam. @ the BOY I teach kids the path from desk to inbox.
A3 Back to Relationships. If you cultivate and model positive relationships and develop RESPECT for everyone, when conflict arises Ss can respectfully disagree.
#EduGladiators
A3. By anticipating possible disruptive actions in class. Role playing conflict situations as a part of the curriculum. In other words be proactive. At the same time fully debriefing conflict situations after they occur. Learning ops. #EduGladiators
Agreed! It’s up to us to change it! Also let’s not forget to include our Teachers/Ldrs of color who face similar challenges & lack necessary support to be more effective. #EduGladiators
In reply to
@PreK33, @D4Griffin3, @SchleiderJustin
A3 a classroom that has a climate & culture set up with restorative practices, routines that are known, & shared power alleviates some conflict. When it does arise the ss are empowered to deal with the conflict on their own making the classroom a true shared space. #EduGladiators
A4 Sharing my passions for the content and other things. Also inviting Ss to do the same. Create a community of common ground for passions. #EduGladiators
A3: Ts who are masterful in this area spend their time tchg & re-tchg. They model, share the spotlight and make sure their is no misunderstandings about how conflict in the classroom is handled. These Ts are proactive, but allow Ss opportunities to practice. #EduGladiators
A3:By giving Ss the tools to peacefully develop solutions,Ts empower the Ss in their own problem-solving skills.Ex.2 Ss were arguing over who would be the Dad in the housekeeping center. They came to me and asked if I could set a timer so they cold take turns. #EduGladiators
A3. It is a natural occurrence but i get concerned when "too much" interrupts instruction..Stressing and modeling Respect. Having support systems outside the room for extra reinforcement #EduGladiators
A3: relationships and a clear understanding where my Ss come from! Know their names and know where they live! Know who the main care giver is, know if a parent is ill or in jail, know if a kid is hungry when they come to school, etc #EduGladiators
A3 Be prepared and plan ahead. Removing obstacles and fostering respect coupled with engaging and energetic instruction should not leave time or space for the cracks that allow for those conflicts. #Edugladiators
A3: Prevention of conflicts isn’t the key to me, but teaching Ss how to self-regulate, how to communicate effectively because THEY WILL ARISE, and how to build deeper connections so that that are fewer conflicts, & resolution ➡️ valued for all. #EduGladiators
A1: The best classroom management tools are simple and free: engaging lessons & trust. Have those and you have everything to build from. #EduGladiators
A3 Once positive culture and trust exists, Ss can be taught how to self-advocate, and advocate for fellow Ss. Lack of advocacy for others = complicity. This must be intentional since many adults do not naturally model this. #EduGladiators
Yes. Especially those schools that assume that Toc should be in charge of SoC and their discipline simply because they share the same skin tone. #EduGladiators
Agreed! It’s up to us to change it! Also let’s not forget to include our Teachers/Ldrs of color who face similar challenges & lack necessary support to be more effective. #EduGladiators
In reply to
@PreK33, @D4Griffin3, @SchleiderJustin
#EduGladiators I try to teach students all about respect and kindness and that everyone has an opinion that might be different from our own which is okay. I do lots of relationship building activities and talks.
A4: New Year- New Kids- New Needs
I realized that my management needs to meet my students needs more than mine. It is a learning process for all of us. #EduGladiators
I'm a huge fan of Fred Jones and walking towards any Ss that are off-task without missing a beat. You cannot manage a classroom if your shoes are stuck in cement from the front of the class. #EduGladiators
A3: In the ideal world my management wouldn't prevent the naturally occurring conflict, it would model to my students how we solve those conflicts without escalation. #EduGladiators The reality is that is still a work in progress.
A2: Management is proactive so the conditions are optimal for learning. Punishment and Consequence are reactive and only make a T feel better for rules being broken. #EduGladiators
A4 When I was teaching kindergarten the best thing I could do is get down at their level, actually getting on my knees, and making eye contact with my Ss when talking to them. Made a huge difference with the trust level we had in our classroom. #EduGladiators
A4: Always being present in the classroom, mentally and physically. I get to know my students, crack jokes with them, NEVER sit at my desk during instruction or even when they're doing independent work. That has made all of the difference in my classroom management #EduGladiators
A4: Learning about each other and taking time to create a contributory culture steeped in trust that best suits the needs of the learners has helped incredibly. Resist the pressures of curriculum pacing that first week. #EduGladiators
A4 Sharing my passions for the content and other things. Also inviting Ss to do the same. Create a community of common ground for passions. #EduGladiators
Classroom Management is a critical skill for all Ts to master and Ldrs to support! Kudos to all who shared their trick of the trade and to @SchleiderJustin for leading this discussion!
Share all week by following others in this chat & sharing resources using - #EduGladiators
A3 #EduGladiators biggest conflict in science classes - lab partners. I survey Ss after the first cpl weeks of school & at semester. I ask who would you work well with & opposite. @BOY the not lists are long. At semester everyone has <3. This is learning, growth & mutual respect
A4: I am Ss and Tt biggest cheerleader and I let them know how proud of them I am and vice versa. Not afraid to tell them how disappointed in something they have done #EduGladiators
Exactly! Teaching is not “do this worksheet and raise your hand if you need help.” Putting in the little bit of extra effort had made all of the difference. #EduGladiators
A3: Do we really want to stop conflict? Sheltering isn’t the answer. I’d say you learn more from solving/understanding conflict than avoiding it. But an odd balll that way. #EduGladiators
A3: I don’t know that I want to see conflict prevention but rather students who can be in conflict and still exhibit respect. All their lives there will be conflict. The classroom is a great place to show that you can vehemently disagree and still work together. #EduGladiators
A4. Humor is huge. Sharing the power. What do you want to learn about this subject. What music should we listen to. Restorative practices to help with conflict resolution. Getting to know each student. Being real and talking to them on a level of respect. #EduGladiators
A4: Always being present in the classroom, mentally and physically. I get to know my students, crack jokes with them, NEVER sit at my desk during instruction or even when they're doing independent work. That has made all of the difference in my classroom management #EduGladiators
A3. It's about teaching Ss to be good people and part of that is how to navigate conflict. If Ts buy into that idea then the way they manage their classroom will include strategies for conflict resolution. #EduGladiators
Natural arising conflicts will happen regardless! CM will guide the conflicts in a “safe” direction. All conflicts are not bad—Ss need to learn from different perspectives &others a management system that values community will steer the conflict away from disaster #EduGladiators
A4 What’s been most helpful is planning, teaching, and reinforcing classroom expectations (not rules) on a daily basis. Frame expectations in what TO do vs. what NOT to do. Also, using daily shout outs and celebrate both achievement and growth to motivate Ss. #EduGladiators
A4: Resist the rush to jump into content in the beginning of the year. Take the time to get to know your Ss and let them get to know you, share stories, teach and practice routines, and start positive!!! #edugladiators
A4: 1st day of school I tell kids I ❤️ them & I mean it. I cannot tell u how much that puts them at ease. We talk about being a family. We look out 4 & take care of 1 another and sometimes we might get mad but @ the end of the day we r still there for 1 another. #EduGladiators
Yes, clear routines and structure are first steps in good classroom management. Far too many "discipline problems" arise from a lack of routine. #EduGladiators
A4. Allow the students to participate in the process. Let them develop some rules/expectations. This creates ownership. It is not your rules but "our" rules. It can be done @ most ages with guidance of course. #EduGladiators
A4 No tricks just honesty. I tell stories from my childhood or my adult kids’ childhoods. As see how actions/inactions stay with you for decades shaping who you are. #EduGladiators
yes!!! conflict will happen whenever groups of people are together. How we deal with that is the key. Restorative practices are huge for my class. #EduGladiators
A4: Each new year I spend SO.MUCH.TIME. developing my classroom culture.I want it ingrained in them that this is what I expect and, more importantly, what they can expect each day they come to school. We revisit expectations as often as needed and refocus after breaks.#Edugladiators
A4 When I was teaching kindergarten the best thing I could do is get down at their level, actually getting on my knees, and making eye contact with my Ss when talking to them. Made a huge difference with the trust level we had in our classroom. #EduGladiators
A3 I don't think strong classroom mgt can stop ALL conflicts but it can have a set of expectations and strategies in place so that it is clear how we will work through them together. #EduGladiators
Great chat this morning off to a busy day at FT Elem—run a little dribblers b-ball program! Great way to get my day started! @SchleiderJustin#EduGladiators
A4: It sounds simple, but the biggest "management" strategy I've used this year has been standing by the door and greeting each student by name on their way into class. Sometimes that's all a kid needs to enter the room with the right mindset. #EduGladiators
A4: When working with my littles, trust and respect. Instead of calling you out in front of everybody, let’s talk about what’s going on and what we can change. Students should have a voice at every age. #EduGladiators#conversechat
A4 I like to give a shout out to Students that are working on their learning goals, the students also cheer each other on. I use humour a lot and genuinely laugh with them #EduGladiators
A4: Relationships. Relationships Relationships. Any success or failure as a manager has had everything to do with relationships. So proud hung up the title of manager in exchange for member. I am a member of the classroom. As a member, I forge relationships. #EduGladiators
Yes! Excellent point. First of all, we learn and grow from conflict. Secondly, we are going to encounter conflict, and we need to learn how to handle it. #EduGladiators
So important! Emotions are complex and often are manifestations of our bias. Bias (racial and otherwise) is another topic we need to discuss more because it impacts Ss whether we like it or not. #EduGladiators

A4: I embrace @ConsciousD model which teaches Ss how to gain emotional intelligence and self-regulate with a big emphasis on building a strong classroom family. Connection is the key! #EduGladiators

A3: Create classrooms built on the foundations of a solid family - togetherness, compassion, forgiveness & love and our kids will begin to see and engage in conflict differently. Respective classroom conflicts (and ulitimatey lack thereof) will follow suit.🔴⚫️ #EduGladiators
#EduGladiators A4: ✔️out 👇🏼Managing your classroom w/Restorative Practices by @ASCD
While restorative justice is about reacting to a wrong, restorative practices seek to create a school culture building the capacity of ALL (Ss, Ts, Ps) to prevent a wrong in the first place.
A4: As other awesome tweeters have said, we need to reflect on our own biases & discuss discipline and race, gender, etc. Read & reflect... make sure you are working everyday to change the system and not perpetuate it. #EduGladiators
Yup - that’s my point exactly. 👍🏻Conflict is going to happen at some point with or without you (the T) there. If Ss don’t have the skills to solve without us, we aren’t helping them, sheltering and pretending it doesn’t exist could do more harm in the long run. #EduGladiators
I agree: during my first few years of teaching I didn’t see the value in taking the time to stop &discuss the conflict after what I thought was “fixing” the problem. Open dialogue between Ss &T goes such a long way — in the end those 5 minutes were better spent! #EduGladiators
My concern is the messaging to young teachers. If you do this and this, you won't have conflict. That's untrue. Even the best relationships have occasional conflict. #EduGladiators
A4: Day one introduce and practice procedures and expectations. Have steps for each activity or transition you have in your class. Even high school students need the structure. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻#EduGladiators
1/3 A4 #EduGladiators Practice what you preach. This wk I shared with Ss the heart wrenching story of why I was inspired to teach. 3 wks b4 K my dad was tragically killed by a shark while we were on vaca. His body was not recovered. As a kid, I didn't really get it. My mom made
A4 While I always tried to foster this feeling, a couple of years ago I literally changed the sign on my classroom to say "Team" & referred to everyone in our class as being part of that team-Ss, Ts, families. Made it very clear that we all have to work together. #EduGladiators
A4 Stand at the door, greet each student, lay it down instructionally, give meaningful feedback, and love the heck out of each kid...especially those that didn’t especially like me:) #GreatestProfessionEver#EduGladiators
2/3 A4 #EduGladiators the best choice she knew how & tried to provide normalcy. So I started K. I had this HUGE fear of abandonment b/c my Daddy just didn't come back one day. So everyday when Mom dropped me off I cried. That K T's response - 1) get a drink of water. & if that
When I first witnessed a teacher perform a"social autopsy" with Ss I was blown away. She literally dissected and diagrammed a social situation that went wrong on the board and then brainstormed how to do it differently. So powerful. #edugladiators
#EduGladiators great chat today. I was in and out w/ my little one but I loved this series on discipline. Made me rethink some things in my classroom practices!!! #edchat#ohedchat

3/3 A4 #EduGladiators didn't work - clip down. I had 5 other K Ts in the bldg who volunteered to eat lunch with me on a rotation. Those ladies were so different than my K T. They made up 4 what she lacked. It was a rough yr & I still cried a lot, but eventually it wasn't daily.

Here is a glimpse of what I do in my classroom. Relationships cannot be ideas they have to be realities. Realities require intention and work. https://t.co/ooxo9xtdm2#EduGladiators

This is true... However... You will have much less... At our school personal relationships are at the forefront... Kid's even settle disputes on their own most of the time... #EduGladiators
My concern is the messaging to young teachers. If you do this and this, you won't have conflict. That's untrue. Even the best relationships have occasional conflict. #EduGladiators
You will have less conflict. And when they do arise they are addressed. THere is no utopia where conflict disappears. Appreciate your comment. #EduGladiators
I thoroughly enjoyed the chat on classroom management with #EduGladiators. Thanks everyone for a job well done and for the new connections. I love building my #PLN
Made me recall these words, questionably attributed to Churchill: "You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.” https://t.co/ATePzU9JlM#edugladiators
You are the best!!
Creating that dialogue and opening up is key. We are not infallible superheroes. I am a person who has made and continues to make mistakes. Also creating that authentic bond is hard and well worth it. #EduGladiators
Agreed. Accountability is essential. I just think authentic accountability exists in our accountability to one another that we create through our relationships. There are still consequences in my room. But they are approached from how choices impact culture. #EduGladiators
She had As come in from recess upset about something that happened. She asked them to describe it and drew it on the board. Then they broke down every action and reaction. She called it a social autopsy. It was effective in illustrating each Ss role in the breakdown.
I just wish edutwitter was more nuanced. Lots of advice that claims to solve problems and a lot of teachers out there not seeing to promised results. Leads to even more self-blame. #EduGladiators
A2: management includes being prepared and proactive. Explicitly teaching expectations, routines and preferred behaviors is the key. Students hit most targets they are aware of and have opportunities to practice.

Routines, structure are certainly necessary, healthy components to management. I like to think that if those are considered from a “this is how I can help you be successful in this classroom,” then even better. I worry that some use it as a don’t cross this line... #EduGladiators

I think too often it creates an “us v. them” environment. If we can instead view ourselves as members of the classroom and not managers, then I think that has the potential to change everything from learning to behavior. #EduGladiators
