Hey Cynteria from Tri Cities HS
Q1: What does it mean to be a "sage on the stage" and/or "guide on the side" in YOUR classroom?
A1 Sage on the stage are gatekeeper of all learning (dare I say micro teachers)
For me being a guide on the side meant that the students were in charge of their learning and I was there to help the process
Guides on the side protect the learning process
Alexandria Elikwu from Instructional Coach from College Park Elem
Guide on the side lets students and learning be the focus VS. Sage on the stage wants the teaching to be the focus.
In my classroom, I take on both roles; however, I am usually only the sage on the stage during an introductory lesson.
A1: I've seen a teacher were students wanted to ask questions and she instructed them to ask her questions
guide on the side is to create an interactive learning experience for students
Being a guide on the side lets Ss have more control over their learning
A1. Sage on the stage wants ultimate control. They are the keeper of all knowledge and does most of the work/talking
A1: guiding students as they set and track learning goals
. I think students need to have the opportunity to ask their peers questions and learn from them in the classroom setting
Would you say a T should never assume the role of sage on the stage?
a guide on the side = personalized hmmm..
True, just on that day the teacher wasn't having it.
A1. A guide on the side lets the students facilitate and you are a listener or redirector.
Hey Daniel from Shakerag joining the chat a little late. Love the topic tonight.
A1. Guide on the Side shares the instructional stage with their students.
I don't my introduction came in. Denise Merriell College Park Elem. Vanguard Newbie
I'm saving my view for the end, don't want to come out the gate with it.
A1. A Guide on the Side can be seen as a facilitator for learning, in which they teach and learn side by side with their Ss.
A1: Sage on the Stage knows where they want the children to go. Guide on the side knows how to get them there.
I would be the guide! I enjoy being the facilitator and allowing my students to discover. A2
Joining from my phone and all tweets aren't loading. :( I really like the term facilitator for guide on the side!
A2: I think you can't get to the guide without starting with some of the sage to SET the stage
I would rather be the guide. I love to see children think and collaborate and second guess themselves, then show confidence.
It's really a good feeling to take a step back and watch your kids work, take ownership, and go further than you imaginedA2
A2 Guide on the side! It allows for individualized learning which can lead to a better understanding
A2: Facilitator for sure! You are never surprised or challenged, or when you are the one "holding" all of the information.
A2 I would be the guide. I find learning more meaningful if it is self led
A2: I would choose to be Guide, but it's easier to be the Sage - and sometimes less work. Guide is where best teaching happens
Q2: Guide/ because the student is the focus & learning experiences becomes more meaningful
I would rather be the guide. I love seeing my students reach the "ah-ha" moment because of their own discovery.
I prefer to be the guide on the side. I love to learn from the perspectives of others. Expands my view
Side note: Remembering to put the A for answer and the hashtag before tweeting sure takes practice!
I didn't expect to get a lot of, "I prefer the teacher centered approach," from this group.
or even remembering you have a limited number of characters..lol
Amazing what an update can do! I see all tweets now! Guide for certain. It builds stronger relationships with Ss.
Neither did I , but I just had to ask. Inquiring minds...
But I think when it's all said and done, teacher is always in control. It's deciding how much control to release
A1: Since I teach AP Cal this year I have been more of the sage on the stage.... But I do allow my students to explore some.
Ok. For Q3, try to compare the "traditional" learning to the current personalized learning... https://t.co/eNtlegmvLk
In Reggio Emilia they refer to it as the "invisible hand" that guides the actions of the children
So sorry I'm missing out! Kindergarten show tonight.
I like "the partner on the path"
A1:Which is different from how I usually organize my classes. Being a content expert helps
A3 Sage, students are less engaged and have less ownership of their learning.
No problem . Enjoy the show!
Both roles play an important part in the learning process, it just depends on when it is used in the learning cycle.
A3: Sage, How do you adjust for students needs with only one voice. Combination of both could also be effective
A3 a class that is sage would be least effective because personalized learning isn't occurring. https://t.co/IEZV8YJaX8
Ok. For Q3, try to compare the "traditional" learning to the current personalized learning... https://t.co/eNtlegmvLk
A3 in PL the sage is less effective bcuz its giving the kids less voice & choice. The Ss will not have input in their education.
A3- sage is less effective. No student active involvement = tuned out Ss
A3: This one is tough b/c when the guide doesn't know what they are doing stuff can get messy really quick.
A3 I struggle with this one because the way I learned was from a sage, but as a T, being the guide is more effective
well said! Less voice and less choice means the info isn't retained
A3 I would say sage is less effective though I do think 10-15 minutes here and there are important
A3. Guide on the side please! 2 eyes, 2 ears, 2 hands, and 1 mouth to direct 15+ needs in differ places on the learning curve??
Not just important, but essential. Just in time Direct Instruction.
A3 it depends on the situation, knowing when to be sage and when to be guide can be hard. 25 yrs of teaching, still learning
A3 All I know is I can't tell you a "great lecture" I had in school but I can tell you great things I DID in school. Sage.
Q4: Formative assessment, formative assessment, and formative assessment. But mostly, it's formative assessment.
A4 - the material I'm teaching...opening a lesson is more sage but once Ss have an understanding, I watch them explore it
A4 there's a planning aspect, can't be the guide if you don't have something for Ss to do while you're guiding a few at a time
A4 When I start a unit or a section then sage but as we move through the material is depends on Ss need
yea! Let's chat. Delta Community Credit Union just gave our school some as well.
It's a great way to incorporate choice and voice.
A3: All I know is that I can't tell you a "great lecture" I had in school but I can tell you great stuff I DID. Guide
A4The day of the week lol
Lol Thanks for the honesty!
A4 Based on indiv classes determ what hat I will wear. I do both. I guide more by small groups their https://t.co/wtgVQCuiYL
Q5: What is the role of the student while you are "on the stage" and "on the side"?
A4 There is definitely give and take with both. Always gaging student needs to decide which hat to wear!
The student is always the learner. Mediums should always change, rarely however should the role
A5: While you are on the stage = create questions, when you are on the side = make connections.
Q5: while you're on the side, leverage student leaders to lead small groups for behavior accountability & peer assessment
The amount of time for the unit, the Ss interest, skills and strategies needed for the Ss to master the content
The student plays both roles in the learning process
A5: To do what students do naturally and explore, and lead their own learning path
Kali- What? The student should never teach the teacher?? It's awesome when a kid adds something I can't
A5 When T is sage, they are somewhat passive. When T is guide, Ss have to take ownership of their learning.
A5 . Me on side: stduents should Listen peers. Collaborate with peers. Me on stage: Listen, understand. Ask for clarification
A5- on the side, Ss are leading & being their own advocates. Stage, Ss are "sponges", taking it all in and forming own opinions
A6: When a students extends your lesson and increases your efforts, your on the right track
Q6: Measure my sage by efficiency (how much I got across in the time I had), my guide, by my effectiveness
Q6 - student surveys and formatives to see what's working the best
A5. If they leave the media center smiling then I am happy on both ends. . LOL. Ask for feedback for the students.
A6 I measure my performance based on student interactions. What type of questions are being asked; how are they collaborating
measure myself on content mastered by Ss and their ability to demonstrate their learning through their own creative lens
