A2: STEM stimulates innovation, innovation boosts economy. STEM is the backbone of exploration. Where would humans be without exploration? @ASD_STEM#akedchat
A1: #STEM is a cross curricular approach that fosters inquiry and develops students’ critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. It is important because who know what problems face future generations. #AKEdChat
I love the cross-curricular approach of STEM or STEAM or METALS... #akedchat Integrating things across multiple disciplines gives a great opportunity to explore content through many different lenses :)
A1: #STEM is a way of thinking and approaching the world. It is important because it helps us solve problems and find new and better ways of doing things #akedchat
Q2: Literacy skills are essential in understanding content and conveying information. How can STEM lessons apply rigorous science, math, ELA content? #akedchat
A2. STEM lessons can be designed with context that brings strength (my preferred word for rigor) across diverse content areas. I love connecting literacy and science. #AKEdChat
A2: STEM lessons can unlock creativity and exploration! I love this from @lavarburton “storytelling has the power to fuel all aspects of our children's higher mind development and learning potential.” #AKEdChathttps://t.co/lOmwGLt1Eg

Q3: Does your community have any local issues that have global significance? How could your students join these conversations? What tools could you use? #akedchat
A3: The effects of global warming are significant in Alaska. Students can engage in #citizenscience projects and advocate for their communities via social media platforms #akedchat
A3: #AKEdChat Global warming is an example of a local issue Getting students involved in #citizenscience both in data collection and anecdotal impacts is one way to encourage involvement #AKEdChat
Q3: Does your community have any local issues that have global significance? How could your students join these conversations? What tools could you use? #akedchat
Q4: Social and emotional learning (SEL) enhances students’ capacity to integrate skills, attitudes, and behaviors to deal effectively and ethically with daily tasks and challenges. How can STEM promote SEL? #akedchat
A4: STEM promotes curiosity and courage: a desire to learn and taking risks in exploration! Perseverance! I see that in my own kid with calculus daily. :) @ASD_STEM#akedchat
A4: Employers say soft skills are important! Group work using the engineering design process can grow students' skills in teamwork, communication, and persevering in problem-solving #akedchat
Q5: Curiosity is important in learning. What can you do to promote inquiry in your classroom? How do you encourage students to share with a broader audience? #akedchat
A5: Pose authentic questions with real world applications. Provide guided inquiry to build students' capacity. Encourage students to apply inquiry skills to community projects, which will engage them naturally in the broader conversations and develop their network #akedchat
A5: Not all students can handle a free inquiry environment. I liked this article on #inquiry as it explains the types (or levels) of inquiry to keep students connected to learning. #AKEdChathttps://t.co/bJKiZAk2sT
A6: It is so important for students to be able to visualize themselves in STEM careers. We need to connect them with role models. This can be in person, or via Skype, etc. Even simple images and videos can be effective. STEM can be anyone! #akedchat
