Q1 Students who have trauma in their lives often will seek safety at school. How do you not only identify these students but provide support to them? #teachNVchat
A1: I think the first step to helping learners w/ trauma is caring enough to let them know you care. It is so easy to focus on content, and lose the fact you have a hurt human being in front of you. #teachNVchat
A1- you have to know your Ss first to notice differences in their behavior. Listening first then guiding them to the proper in school Resources if needed #teachNVchat

A1 IDing these kids is hard; you have to build a relationship and listen with the heart. Treat Ss with respect, provide structure and boundaries. React to Ss on a personal level. #teachNVchat
A1: I think it is important to let them know that you are there for them. Spend time talking to them or playing a game or reading a book, anything to show support. #teachnvchat

I agree. This is 1 situation where the relationship that you've been building since the 1st day of school really comes into play. The trust and love that you've already proven can start to help. #teachnvchat
A1 people who have been through trauma or are living it, often try to hide it so you have to get good at reading people, looking for little changes #teachNVchat
Q1 Students who have trauma in their lives often will seek safety at school. How do you not only identify these students but provide support to them? #teachNVchat
Article I read last week said great teachers need to know 3 things: Pedagogy, Content, Kids. We must know our kids well in order to be the teacher they will let into their lives. #teachnvchat

#teachNVchat A2: I would start with 2 minutes of uninterrupted one on one attention. If we dont know why the behaviors are occurring just ask "whats up?"
A2 Greet them. Be glad they are here and let your face and voice show it. Soft landings or thoughtful team bldg. Surprised that kids yesterday read books for 20 minutes while munching get breakfast. #teachNVchat
A2 Last year I had morning tubs with manipulatives like pattern blocks or alphabet cards but it wasn't calm or lovely with this year's group. So we have morning work i.e. book bags, sentence building - predictable, calm, dynamic. #teachnvchat
A2: I started every class (HS) with a high five. It wasn't calm, it was energetic, enthusiastic, and about them. Different grades, different needs? #teachNVchat
#teachNVchat Since I have been teaching at UNR, I have learned how much trauma we, as teachers, cause at the MS & HS level wrt math. The stories I have heard make me sad.
#teachNVchat A2: i have started using morning meeting with, the greeting, share, and activity. The kids enjoy it and it has really built relationships.
Once everyone is in (we have a rolling dropoff), we do a @responsiveclass morning meeting with a couple different greetings and community building activities to start our day #teachnvchat

Q3 Students who have suffered trauma often struggle in academics as well as social situations. How do create structures for them to be successful? #teachNVchat
This year we have a quick academic password that the kids work through before they say See you later to Mom or Dad and get a High Five/Cleared for Entry from me. It's a nice 20 seconds of 1:1 time with them #teachnvchat

Q3 Students who have suffered trauma often struggle in academics as well as social situations. How do create structures for them to be successful? #teachNVchat
A3:Ss often perform well at school but suffer in grades due to hw. Home environment is so tumultuous, that Ss can't succeed. Time to rethink hw. #teachNVchat
#teachNVchat A3: At the high school level, we never really had to deal w/ this head on. The counselors did 90% of the effort on this. I don't know how to create structures to help. #realization#moresadness
#teachNVchat a3, trust is a must with students who've experienced trauma, letting them know you're dependable, reliable and available and that you will support them in whatever they need helps students to be successful.
#teachNVchat I definitely did this many years ago, so I didn't have this struggle. The 2-4-2 idea of @steve_leinwand's on homework is very successful. 2 Q's on new material, 4 Q's on cumulative review, 2 Q's on conceptual mathematics.
#teachNVchat A3: I think it is important to work through situations first. Listen first to understand their why? The behavior is occurring. I also have a peace corner if they need to calm down, if they are feeling any emotions they can go there.
A2- greet them at the door, say their name, ask them about their life/sports/interests and show interest in them as a person not just a student #teachNVchat
