#resiliencechat I am still raising money for COBRA and other expenses

Tomorrow I go in for a PET scan. Then oncologist will know if this is my old cancer or a brand new one.
Thanks, Sara. I need all the help I can get. Funny you mentioning white light, 'cause tomorrow's PET scan is about seeing what will be lit up as the oncologist put it. #resiliencechat
#resiliencechat Tidbit: According to the National Center for Education Statistics, there are currently 3.1 million full-time-equivalent teachers in public schools and 0.4 million in private.
Q1: What teacher from your schooldays, was inspirational to you and/or made an impression on you? What did he/she say or do that made a difference for you? #resiliencechat
A1: As a poor reader in Gr1, my Gr2 teacher saw the need in me and invested extra time in helping me learn to read. It’s bc of Mrs. Yee that I became a teacher. #resiliencechat
A1 If you include graduate school, then Professor James Miller is the one who said something to me that caused me to think and influence me. #resiliencechat
A1: My 1-4 grade teacher, Miss Rogotze, was the first teacher to have a great impact on me. She is the reason I am a teacher. She took the time to build relationships with her students. Then during my undergrad, Dr. Spurgin sparked my interest in special ed. #resiliencechat
If pay is higher then more people will want to be teachers. And if we have more teachers then we wouldn't have as much as 35 kids in a classroom. #resiliencechat
A1. My high school English teacher personally asked me to join his ‘free the children’ group. The potential he saw in me beyond just academics is something that stood out #resiliencechat
A1: Music and theatre teachers. Choir made me feel instantly valuable. Theatre gave me a chance to be great. Mrs. Judy Stephenson and Mr. Marion Sweatmon. Marshall Rams, San Antonio Texas. #resiliencechat
Q1: What teacher from your schooldays, was inspirational to you and/or made an impression on you? What did he/she say or do that made a difference for you? #resiliencechat
In addition to paying Ts more, we also need for it to be harder to become a teacher. If you make it more competitive and increase salaries, you will get the folks you want. #resiliencechat
A1 What he meant by that is that he knew that the white supremacists and antisemites would make my life miserable for stating it that way. #resiliencechat
You are a hero--and a multi-tasker extraordinaire! (Yet is there really such a thing as multi-tasking?) I think we did a #resiliencechat on that subject... #resiliencechat
Hi! Most of the kids who decided to watch “Coco”have gone to bed even though the movie “It” is still playing. Pizza and tie-dye were the other evening activities this Founders’ Day Eve.
#Resiliencechat
A2: often it is other adults, the uninspired staff colleague, the helicopter parents, the pseudo educational experts who all can detract from our work with kids #resiliencechat
I think my mom, who was a HS French and Spanish teacher for CPS would have agreed with that. People think Ed degrees are easy. No respect for it. #resiliencechat
A1 Too many to name them all, but Miss Dmytryk in 5th grade is one of the reasons I stuck with writing through some not-very-encouraging moments.
#resiliencechat
I am not sure I agree with that advice. If you feel your religion was more important than your nationality, why should you allow extremists to decide how you define yourself. #resiliencechat
A2 #resiliencechat We have been seeing some stress created by the feeling that as a society we are expecting our teachers to “fix” things. So many of them work so hard, and need our consistent support to help them thrive. We all need each other to be successful!
A2: Attitudes. I can handle behaviour as that's not a choice for the learner, but attitude, totally a choice in happy or grumpy. WE all have stress, we all have to cope, we all have to learn to get along. #resiliencechat
A2: I find that getting caught up in a negative environment is stressful. If you can move past that and stay positive, focusing on your Ss, while staying calm and having fun, this is helpful to get past this stress. #resiliencechat
Once “It” is done, I’m heading home to rinse and dry all the t-shirts so they can sign them in the morning after our Dunkin’ breakfast. #traditions#Resiliencechat

#resiliencechat A2: The perception that we are superheroes. The expectation we create for each other that we should work 24/7 and not care for ourselves. And, quite frankly, knowing that we will have to work forever and might not be able to safely retire. The job...and the life.
Yes, we have to be careful not to feed off the negative energy in education these days. We must use the stress to motivate us all to make things better.
#resiliencechat
To be clear, he wasn't saying I shouldn't take pride in my heritage. But think about the current culture. I think of myself as a Jewish Chicagoan. Being American for me is happenstance. #resiliencechat
A2 The belief that teachers deserve to be second-class citizens is out there and sufficiently pervasive to have a major effect on respect, working conditions, and more.
#Resiliencechat
A2 In my case it was students being about to complain about final grades. I had a student whose parents donated money to the community college "win" an argument with the dean. #resiliencechat
A3: “In a completely rational society, the best of us would aspire to be teachers & the rest would have to settle for something less, b/c passing civilization along from one generation to the next ought to be the highest honor & responsibility anyone could have” #ChatwithTNEdu
Yeah. To add insult to injury I had to call up to find out the outcome. And the dean essentially told me what a terrible person I was. So much for having my back. Stabbing is more like it. #resiliencechat
Thank them and give them a little something, too. Thank you for being there for my child every day. Seriously, how do we forget to thank them? #ThankATeacher#resiliencechat
#resiliencechat In humility as a T, I might dial this back a notch. Farming, building homes, being a soldier/protector. These are foundations of a community and society. T enters the picture soon after.
So “It” is over and variously scared kids are coming up to bed. Good night, #Resiliencechat- I’m off home as soon as they settle in a bit! The houseparent on duty can take it from here. 😏
A3: I got what is shown in pic along with Mountain Dew from a staff member today. That was an awesome surprise! Made my heart smile. From Ss...I love getting hand made posters, words/cards of appreciation, or hugs. #resiliencechat
A3 When I was a part time instructor at this one community college that served a working class community, I had my own version of the Sweathogs in this one classroom. #resiliencechat
A4) Why the heck not? Just as kids social/emotional needs must be met to be in a position to learn, teachers should feel cared for to teach. #resiliencechat
A3 Later on when I was in this cubicle for "office" hours, the head of my Sweathogs actually came and apologized to me. They behaved after that. #resiliencechat
A4: I believe so. My experience with these opportunities is that it creates a more positive environment which is beneficial for everyone. #resiliencechat
#resiliencechat A4: Instead, I would prefer the funding go towards programs or resources to lessen the NEED for teacher resilience. Cure the illness rather than ease the symptoms.
A4: School districts need to allocate funds to support what teachers need. Cater to the specific needs of the most important topics/improvement areas. Resilience is one area that, in my opinion, should be considered. #resiliencechat
Q5: If professional development funds WERE allocated to support the resilience of teachers, how would you like to see those funds used? #resiliencechat
A5: I am not sure what it would look like, but I imagine some major training w #growthmindset philosophies (empathy, grit, resilience, flexibility, etc...) to help Ts persevere and pass along to Ss. #resiliencechat
A5: I am doing something close for my teachers...I am getting a masseuse to come to the school for a day for all the teachers to have a 10 min. chair massage! #resiliencechat
I consult with a number of schools throughout the country and abroad and I am the Director of Engagement and Professional Development at one particular school in CA. #resiliencechat
Urg. This is why I really hate hierarchies. Can’t we all just be important and valued contributors each in our own way? I don’t want to be seen as more than *or* less than, nor do I want that for anyone else.
#resiliencechat
A5) Dealing with negativity -- from colleagues, from public officials, from (hate to say it) parents. I wouldn't say it's fighting these forces as much as moving beyond. Can't let it get you down. #resiliencechat

A6: Make sure I am staying positive, calm, and having fun with my students! Continue to appreciate every moment I have with them until the last day of school. #resiliencechat
A6: Prep gifts for my kids HS teachers. I hope they like Blackwing pencils and chocolate. AND
get ready for Teacher Appreciation Luncheon on Wednesday. #resiliencechat
A big THANK YOU to all who joined in #resiliencechat tonight. I want to say "thank you" to everyone for all of your dedication and hard work. Your have no idea how much you mean to so many c students!!! Keep tapping that resilience and keep coming to #resiliencechat!
