#musedchat Archive
Each Monday evening at 8PM EST, music teachers get together and share ideas about important topics within music education. Itβs a great chance to interact directly with educators from all over the world and to get new tips and tricks to help you succeed in the classroom. The entire #musedchat discussion is organized and moderated by Joe Guarr.

Thanks, Ready for festival this weekend?
-
I left MSBOA a few years ago. HS is going to MMEA festival in Fowlerville though.
-
I host my own festival for our schools in Dearborn. Similar to MMEA.
-
That's awesome! Hope it goes well
-
Q1 coming shortly And to save characters, let's use the abbreviation MIOSM tonight.
-
Antoine Buttigieg here from Woodbridge Ontario Canada HS instrumental music teacher MB and drumline director
-
HI Antoine, hope you're doing well tonight
-
Q1: How do you currently celebrate MIOSM with your school and students?
-
-
I don't really spend much time on it, honestly. March seems to include a lot of different "months" like "March is Reading"
-
A1: fun music facts in school announcements. special fun media based projects in each music class.
-
-
Ooh, I want one of those shirts!
-
A1: March is when we do our annual chamber music concert, and we have a "this day in music" each day during school announcements
-
-
what happens if there isn't any trivia for that specific day?
-
I have to dig REALLY deep on some days. Composer birthdays, chart-topping songs from that date, etc
-
do you do the work or get a 'reliable' student?
-
I'll dig up the facts, but the students read them on the announcements.
-
Q2: How can we get the entire school involved in MIOSM? How can we take it beyond the school into the community?
-
A2 it's really about getting all the departments to help out and support each other. They ask what's in it for them?
-
A2: use MISOM to schedule community performances. Host a mock rock event or talent show. Recruit, recruit, recruit (scheduling)
-
A2: school wide concert and a community concert too. We used to always watch and sing the PBS Worlds Largest Concert.
-
A2: I start with Ss responding to and during our concert, I include inserts for parents to add to it. Small but effective.
-
but how do you get the whole school to buy in?
-
but how do you get the whole school supporting ur ideas?
-
The importance of strong collegial relationships. Building a supportive culture, so other depts are eager to help
-
A2: could begin with departments/grade levels.
-
make it S lead. Ts and Ss buy in to student initiatives. This year my Tri-M students are organizing the events.
-
fair enough, but we all know that's not how most school work. How do you get people to buy in?
-
I just asked. I didn't have to 'sell' a thing
-
I'm willing to work w/ other depts, so they are willing to return the favor.
-
I find that music Dept are always eager to help/support out other Dept and the thoughts /actions are not reciprocal
-
A2: A long-term goal is to get a district-wide collage concert going during MIOSM.
-
geez then I guess it's me ππππ π€π€π€π°π¨π±π
-
and high stakes testing, and data mining, and personalized learning, andβ¦
-
Yeah, all that makes class time very precious. Not every T is willing to be flexible
-
Q3: Are there any special MIOSM events you like that could be expanded through the rest of your year?
-
A3: I would love to build a culture where mini-concerts happen every month for the student body during lunches.
-
Love this idea! Sort of like a hybrid lunch/coffee hour. Could be really cool.
-
open mic lunch. cafeβesque. Exactly!
-
And logistically, this wouldn't be too difficult to pull off. Especially if you already do chamber music
-
lots of possibilities to incorporate all music disciplines if you have portable audio equip.
-
Yeah, and you could even offer Ss a chance to play their creations over the soundsystem at lunch
-
oh yeah. SO NOT open mic. Going for the feel here. haha.
-
You'd have to have some sort of prior approval system. Could have kids submit auditions online.
-
Sorry i missed ! Apparently a pre-bedtime nap on the couch was required this evening. Time for actual bed. Have a great week! π΄
-
-
-
Recording would be easy enough. Kids can just email an MP3 straight from their mobile device.
-
it's a ton of fun. Kids sign up just to make sure the lyrics are appropriate
-
do you find that the music Ss are shy to present their stuff to other non music kids?
-
Not at all. We send chamber groups caroling around the whole school in Dec. Kids love it.
-
5th grade - no. HS - yes. HS requires a slow build.
-
love Dec caroling! All schools should try it.
-
-
The Quick and Easy Carols by are great for putting something like that together on short notice.
-
thanks for the recommend! I have been searching for a set like this.
-
free duet/trio/quartet arrangements from the web
-
There's also a set of Christmas Duets for All books.
