A1: to me formative assessment means finding out where the Ss learning currently stands. It helps to guide daily instruction #octmchat
  • MissLovelyWE Feb 8 @ 8:36 PM EST
A1 In kindergarten, formative assessment means being able to see what a child understands without them knowing I’m assessing them. #octmchat
  • 2TMurphy Feb 8 @ 8:36 PM EST
Tommy Murphy. Junior at Otterbein University. Early childhood education major. #octmchat
  • Katherineawalt Feb 8 @ 8:36 PM EST
A1- Formative assessment to me means keeping track of what my students know throughout the unit! I want to be aware of any misconceptions happening and know that I am able to keep building on what I have taught. #octmchat
  • mslaylay22 Feb 8 @ 8:36 PM EST
    #octmchat Hello Bonita from Princeton
  • chhardyman413 Feb 8 @ 8:37 PM EST
A1: I see formative assessments as my road map along the way during a unit. Their results tell me when to slow down, interviene, challenge others, etc. #octmchat
  • mathbarb Feb 8 @ 8:37 PM EST
A1 formative assessment for me means finding out what students know now to make instructional decisions in real time. #octmchat
  • stadtjay Feb 8 @ 8:37 PM EST
A1 Giving me a quick check of my Ss current learning- where they are on the pathway to mastery #octmchat
  • HeatherHJC Feb 8 @ 8:38 PM EST
A1 checks throughout the unit to check for understanding #octmchat
  • MathRocks73 Feb 8 @ 8:38 PM EST
A1: Formative assessment is gathering information about strengths, weaknesses, misconceptions, level of understanding #octmchat
  • schultzem Feb 8 @ 8:38 PM EST
A1: Fomative assessment means opportunities for students measure how they are progressing to mastery. Formative assessment also means I can tailor learning for specific needs. #octmchat
  • cmsmath Feb 8 @ 8:38 PM EST
A1 Formative assessment to me is taking a pulse of the class. Where are they now and using that information to figure out where I'm going #octmchat
  • jillcolaw Feb 8 @ 8:38 PM EST
Hi I’m Jill 5th grade teacher ELA- enjoying this chat in front on my fireplace #OCTMchat
  • chrissybug24 Feb 8 @ 8:38 PM EST
A1: Formative assessments allow me to see what the students are "bringing to the table" -- this includes observation, exit tickets, conversations, journal entries, etc... Formative assessments should be my roadmap to instruction... #OCTMchat
  • swoctm1 Feb 8 @ 8:40 PM EST
Q2 is coming soon. We have 4 prompts tonight with an end time of 9:00pm EST. #octmchat
  • chrissybug24 Feb 8 @ 8:40 PM EST
I'm glad you said "throughout the unit" -- sometimes we think formative assessments are done only at the beginning of a unit/module and forget that formative assessment is ongoing! #OCTMchat
    In reply to @HeatherHJC
  • jillcolaw Feb 8 @ 8:40 PM EST
A1 formative assessment is like taking the pulse of the classroom -strengths and weakness. Also where should my teaching go next ##OCTMchat

“It is teachers that make the difference.” John Hattie #octmchat
  • cincy_mathanne Feb 8 @ 8:41 PM EST
Anybody else hearing the undertones of true differentiation in this conversation tonight?!? #octmchat
  • chrissybug24 Feb 8 @ 8:42 PM EST
Oh... I like that you mentioned Ss... I was being selfish and using that as the teacher, but formative assessments are a great temperature check our students as well! #OCTMchat
    In reply to @schultzem
  • 2TMurphy Feb 8 @ 8:42 PM EST
A1: Formative assessments allows for me to check for understanding in my students and see how I am doing as a teacher. #octmchat
  • cincy_mathanne Feb 8 @ 8:43 PM EST
A2: Entrance and exit tickets, conversations, journals, group work... what isn’t? Anytime you take a second to pause and really hear the students thinking. #octmchat
  • MissLovelyWE Feb 8 @ 8:43 PM EST
A2 It can look different depending on the moment! Sometimes a video of students explaining their thinking to a friend, sometimes a turn & talk so I can listen, sometimes I’m glancing at manipulatives, sometimes overt answers. #octmchat
  • schultzem Feb 8 @ 8:43 PM EST
A2: warm-up questions, card sorts, card stacks, math games, exit tickets, conversation, informal observation, number talks, I notice/I wonder, DESMOS activities / challenges... #octmchat
  • stadtjay Feb 8 @ 8:43 PM EST
A2 More often than not, my formative assessments were unknown to my Ss- observations, quick writes, discussions, checking models and journals #assessmentninja #octmchat
  • mathbarb Feb 8 @ 8:44 PM EST
A2 anecdotal notes, exit tix, entrance tix, my favorite no, number talks & strings #octmchat
  • chhardyman413 Feb 8 @ 8:44 PM EST
A2: Exit tickets, journal entries, I have been using many of the performance tasks from Howard County, games that require proof! (Recording charts, number lines, etc) #octmchat
  • cmsmath Feb 8 @ 8:44 PM EST
A2 Exit tickets, journal prompts, question of the day, number talks, white boards, "I used to think but now I think"....#octmchat
  • chrissybug24 Feb 8 @ 8:44 PM EST
A2: I see formative assessments as observations, conversations, writing prompts, exit tickets, self-assessing (thumbs up/down), interpreting body language of my students, etc... #OCTMchat
  • jillcolaw Feb 8 @ 8:45 PM EST
A2 looks different everyday. It could be a quick 5 fingers on how well Ss understand, an exit slip with a question to answer, might be just kid watching and writing anecdotal notes for my use only. ##OCTMchat
  • chrissybug24 Feb 8 @ 8:45 PM EST
What a great list of formative assessment ideas! Thanks, @schultzem ! What would you add to this list? #OCTMchat
    • schultzem Feb 8 @ 8:43 PM EST
A2: warm-up questions, card sorts, card stacks, math games, exit tickets, conversation, informal observation, number talks, I notice/I wonder, DESMOS activities / challenges... #octmchat
  • Katherineawalt Feb 8 @ 8:45 PM EST
A2- I don’t have my own classroom yet, but in class my peers and I each came up with our own exit tickets! I like the idea of using exit tickets as a formative assessment. You get to see what they learned without them feeling the pressure of a quiz/test. #octmchat
  • MathRocks73 Feb 8 @ 8:45 PM EST
A2: Number Talks, listening to conversations during exploratory learning (I love @joboaler Mindset Mathematics activities for this), exit tickets, mathematical mistake and problem solving journal, self-assessment #octmchat
  • 2TMurphy Feb 8 @ 8:46 PM EST
A2: to me it is anything to check for understanding. Such as written or verbal communication on the topic. #octmchat
  • HeatherHJC Feb 8 @ 8:46 PM EST
A2 I like something per lesson for info gathering, but I am also working towards some “key” formative that kids can give it a go as they will be tested. Thought is they can use these to study for summative assessment. Thoughts? #octmchat
  • chrissybug24 Feb 8 @ 8:46 PM EST
Yes... Howard County's Math Tasks are a great resource! @JohnSanGiovanni #OCTMchat

    In reply to @MathRocks73, @joboaler, @numbertalks
  • cincy_mathanne Feb 8 @ 8:49 PM EST
I love it heather! Some FA is more formal than others. Students need to understand how to show what they know especially when it really matters. This gives them practice #octmchat

  • stadtjay Feb 8 @ 8:50 PM EST
A3 Using @PearDeck is a great tool for formative assessments, especially with the ability to anonymously share student answers #octmchat
  • jillcolaw Feb 8 @ 8:50 PM EST
A3 Kahoot!, Peardeck, Google Classroom, surveys, etc... Hoping to learn about more##OCTMchat
  • HeatherHJC Feb 8 @ 8:50 PM EST
A3 Flipgrid, google form. Made plicker cards, but have not used them. Anyone used those? #octmchat
  • schultzem Feb 8 @ 8:50 PM EST
A3: My recent favorites are Flipgrid, nearpod, and rocketbook pages. I also use schoology polls and quizzes, google surveys, today’s meet, and mentimeter. #octmchat
  • Katherineawalt Feb 8 @ 8:50 PM EST
Q3- I like using Kahoot! It’s fun and engaging for them. They get to play against their peers and you can see what they know. #octmchat
  • MathRocks73 Feb 8 @ 8:51 PM EST
A3: Peardeck is my new find! #octmchat

  • stadtjay Feb 8 @ 8:52 PM EST
A3 Also Desmos actitvies. Can share student answers anonymously to show thinking without embarrassment #octmchat
  • chrissybug24 Feb 8 @ 8:52 PM EST
A3: I know a lot of my teachers use @Seesaw and @Flipgrid to gather formative assessment data I also use @GetKahoo and @plickers as a way to gather information And... Google Forms are another go-to for me #OCTMchat
  • mathbarb Feb 8 @ 8:53 PM EST
Desmos polygraphs are great too! #octmchat
  • chrissybug24 Feb 8 @ 8:53 PM EST
Yep! LOVE @plickers -- and know that @mrsflaniganmath uses them with her 4th graders in @WestCler #octmchat
    In reply to @HeatherHJC, @plickers, @mrsflaniganmath, @WestCler
  • 2TMurphy Feb 8 @ 8:53 PM EST
A3 Kahoot is by far my favorite. It turns assessment into a game and students have a lot of fun playing. also some get rather competitive.... #octmchat
  • swoctm1 Feb 8 @ 8:54 PM EST
Last question (Q4) is coming up in one minute #octmchat

"Great teachers are habitual students for their students. They assess continually to understand the human beings that they teach." -Carol Ann Tomlinson #octmchat
  • MissLovelyWE Feb 8 @ 8:55 PM EST
A3 Regular “old fashioned” iPad camera app! I’m in the process of learning @Seesaw with my class. @WilsonElem #octmchat

A4 For me the technology pieces are extremely helpful!!#octmchat
  • cmsmath Feb 8 @ 8:56 PM EST
A4 I need some PD on the technology resources. I keep hearing about them but think I need to see them #octmchat
  • cincy_mathanne Feb 8 @ 8:57 PM EST
A4: You guys have me thinking about what could be a new pd presentation in my arsenal 🤔 #octmchat
  • stadtjay Feb 8 @ 8:57 PM EST
A4 I don’t know anything about Flipgrid, so that is at the top of my list! Hopefully I can learn more from OETC next week! #octmchat
  • chhardyman413 Feb 8 @ 8:57 PM EST
A4: I'd like to try peardeck and check into desmos. Sometimes I get overwhelmed with everything that is out there! They are on my list though! #octmchat
  • MissLovelyWE Feb 8 @ 8:57 PM EST
A4 I totally forgot about Plickers. I need to figure out a good kindergarten twist for that! Maybe I can put my student teacher to work on that. 😉 #octmchat
  • Katherineawalt Feb 8 @ 8:57 PM EST
Q4- I’ve learned about some new technology tools to possibly implement in the classroom. I can’t wait to learn more about them. Thank you teachers for all the great advice!! #octmchat
  • mathbarb Feb 8 @ 8:58 PM EST
    I agree!! #octmchat
    In reply to @cincy_mathanne
  • schultzem Feb 8 @ 8:58 PM EST
A4: I want to learn more about peardeck and seesaw. Also, looking for strategies to keep track of formative assessment ... I see 130 students over 6 bells. Keeping it all straight can be overwhelming. Suggestions?? #octmchat
  • chrissybug24 Feb 8 @ 8:58 PM EST
A4: I want to promote more student ownership when thinking about formative assessments... I selfishly use them as my own information, but students can learn so much more if they are reflecting about their journey Thanks for opening my eyes, @schultzem #bettertogether #OCTMchat
  • MathRocks73 Feb 8 @ 8:59 PM EST
A4-I learned I need to investigate some more technology. #octmchat
