Hi my name is Katherine! I’m a senior at Otterbein University. I am an early childhood education major and getting my 4/5th endorsement as well!#octmchat
Hi! I'm one of the math consultants/coaches @HamiltonCoESC down here in Cincinnati -- and I'm the current president @ohioctm
Tonight I'm joining #OCTMchat from my kitchen table (late dinner after a cut & color) :)
A1- Formative assessment to me means keeping track of what my students know throughout the unit! I want to be aware of any misconceptions happening and know that I am able to keep building on what I have taught. #octmchat
A1: I see formative assessments as my road map along the way during a unit. Their results tell me when to slow down, interviene, challenge others, etc. #octmchat
A1: Fomative assessment means opportunities for students measure how they are progressing to mastery. Formative assessment also means I can tailor learning for specific needs. #octmchat
A1: Formative assessments allow me to see what the students are "bringing to the table" -- this includes observation, exit tickets, conversations, journal entries, etc...
Formative assessments should be my roadmap to instruction... #OCTMchat
I'm glad you said "throughout the unit" -- sometimes we think formative assessments are done only at the beginning of a unit/module and forget that formative assessment is ongoing! #OCTMchat
Oh... I like that you mentioned Ss... I was being selfish and using that as the teacher, but formative assessments are a great temperature check our students as well! #OCTMchat
A2: Entrance and exit tickets, conversations, journals, group work... what isn’t? Anytime you take a second to pause and really hear the students thinking. #octmchat
A2 It can look different depending on the moment! Sometimes a video of students explaining their thinking to a friend, sometimes a turn & talk so I can listen, sometimes I’m glancing at manipulatives, sometimes overt answers. #octmchat
A2 More often than not, my formative assessments were unknown to my Ss- observations, quick writes, discussions, checking models and journals #assessmentninja#octmchat
A2: Exit tickets, journal entries, I have been using many of the performance tasks from Howard County, games that require proof! (Recording charts, number lines, etc) #octmchat
A2: I see formative assessments as observations, conversations, writing prompts, exit tickets, self-assessing (thumbs up/down), interpreting body language of my students, etc... #OCTMchat
A2 looks different everyday. It could be a quick 5 fingers on how well Ss understand, an exit slip with a question to answer, might be just kid watching and writing anecdotal notes for my use only. ##OCTMchat
A2- I don’t have my own classroom yet, but in class my peers and I each came up with our own exit tickets! I like the idea of using exit tickets as a formative assessment. You get to see what they learned without them feeling the pressure of a quiz/test. #octmchat
A2: Number Talks, listening to conversations during exploratory learning (I love @joboaler Mindset Mathematics activities for this), exit tickets, mathematical mistake and problem solving journal, self-assessment #octmchat
A2 I like something per lesson for info gathering, but I am also working towards some “key” formative that kids can give it a go as they will be tested. Thought is they can use these to study for summative assessment. Thoughts? #octmchat
"The first fundamental principle of effective classroom feedback is that feedback should be more work for the recipient than the donor.”
― Dylan Wiliam, Embedded Formative Assessment #octmchat
I love it heather! Some FA is more formal than others. Students need to understand how to show what they know especially when it really matters. This gives them practice #octmchat
A3: My recent favorites are Flipgrid, nearpod, and rocketbook pages. I also use schoology polls and quizzes, google surveys, today’s meet, and mentimeter. #octmchat
A3: I’m going to say what a lot of others will probably echo... flipgrid! After seeing 2nd graders explain how they did a problem I was sold! @TeixeiraKatie#octmchat
A3: I know a lot of my teachers use @Seesaw and @Flipgrid to gather formative assessment data
I also use @GetKahoo and @plickers as a way to gather information
And... Google Forms are another go-to for me #OCTMchat
A3 Kahoot is by far my favorite. It turns assessment into a game and students have a lot of fun playing. also some get rather competitive.... #octmchat

A4: I'd like to try peardeck and check into desmos. Sometimes I get overwhelmed with everything that is out there! They are on my list though! #octmchat
A4 I totally forgot about Plickers. I need to figure out a good kindergarten twist for that! Maybe I can put my student teacher to work on that. 😉 #octmchat
Q4- I’ve learned about some new technology tools to possibly implement in the classroom. I can’t wait to learn more about them. Thank you teachers for all the great advice!! #octmchat
A4: I want to learn more about peardeck and seesaw. Also, looking for strategies to keep track of formative assessment ... I see 130 students over 6 bells. Keeping it all straight can be overwhelming. Suggestions?? #octmchat
A4: I want to promote more student ownership when thinking about formative assessments... I selfishly use them as my own information, but students can learn so much more if they are reflecting about their journey
Thanks for opening my eyes, @schultzem#bettertogether#OCTMchat
