Happy Weekend Eve! Debbie, new grandmother & tech coordinator from #stl looking forward to chatting tonight about "How tech is improving education." #moedchat
Sharing your story allows students to view you as a human with difficulties and struggles and can provide a chance to help build a life-changing relationship some students desperately need. #growthmindset#edchat#moedchat#tlap
A1: I would say that tech plays a role in almost everything I do. Even if I'm focusing on a non-tech topic, tech comes into play in organization, communication, sharing, etc. #MOedchat
A1: As PD chair a huge role as I lead our PDC in implementation and helping Ts implement tech throughout the district. We're the tech guinea pigs & guides #moedchat
A1: Fairly good size role for tech and ever increasing. Every student in my room has had their own Chromebook for the past 2 years and all of grade level I believe now does too... so lots of tech transition too #MOedchat
A1 Tech is pretty much a majority of my job, I include a lot of physical/content stuff, but it ends up being physical/content with a tech element added #MOedchat
A1.2: As a T it is also huge as I was going to flip my classroom before we even went 1:1 and since am one of the most tech integrative Ts in our district--but still nothing like a lot of you all #moedchat
A1.2: As a T it is also huge as I was going to flip my classroom before we even went 1:1 and since am one of the most tech integrative Ts in our district--but still nothing like a lot of you all #moedchat
a1 HS Ss have often had tons of experience knowing how to hide the fact they don't know something. Tech helps me identify those Ss and work with them efficiently. #moedchat
A1 Since I am a tech coordinator/instructional tech specialist, tech obviously plays a huge part of my job. My goal is the seamless use of tech using it to ignite and transform learning. #moedchat
Learning how to integrate STEM through K-12. My specialty is algebra integration, but I don't know anyone else doing that...yet Hard to convince HS math Ts they don't have to sacrifice content. #moedchat
#moedchat For me in Indiana, it is my full time job. Working to help Ts become familiar with Google to scheduling Mystery Skypes/Hangouts for our Ss (Grade 6-8 went to Russia, Canada and Sweden last semester) and Guest speakers for our teachers.
#moedchat A1 Fortunate this week to have John Stamos, Indiana US Senator Todd Young and Original MTV VJ Mark Goodman speak with our students and share their stories.
A1. As a T, I think it has to play a rather large role. I don't think we can separate technology from the "real world value" Ss today need. Of course, it has to be used effectively #moedchat
A2: Tech makes me more efficient. From file management in Drive to digital contact logs and to-do lists, I rely on tech to make it through the day. #moedchat
I was having a conversation at the STL STEM Ecosystem design meeting this week about math being the forgotten part of STEM. We need that integration to make the content more "relevant" to students. #moedchat
A2: Assessment/progress checks are quicker and more immediate results... communicating with Ss and Ps is easier... PD via Twitter has changed the game too #MOedchat
A2. my Science Ss have started using Google Sites to create digital portfolios and document their work throughout the year. We send the site link to parents to see all they are doing, and they can keep it year to year #moedchat
A1: Tech is what I do 😊. It’s somethings am really passionate about and I love when I get to use creative ways to help students and teachers with curriculum #MOedchat
A2. One example includes @SmorePages !! I use Smore for my weekly staff newsletters, parent newsletters, and School Improvement Plan (SIP) updates. Yesterday I sent out our most recen update for the staff. #MOedchat
#moedchat A2 Resources are much easier to access. PDs, such as this chat, are available. Now I can learn new ideas from all over the world. Finally, collaboration with Ts and their classes.

A2 Finding resources, finding and connecting with other educators with same interests, finding inspiration (esp #etmooc ; ), finding answers to Qs, more efficient (esp with Google Drive), better conference participation, etc. all MUCH easier via technology! #moedchat
A2. we have also started using the power of video... both quicktime screen recording and @YouTube to show learning.... both things Ss can put in their portfolio #moedchat
I applaud you for that and a bit envious. For math, it is extremely risky to use anything not well aligned to our standards bc connections are missed. #moedchat
#moedchat A1 Fortunate this week to have John Stamos, Indiana US Senator Todd Young and Original MTV VJ Mark Goodman speak with our students and share their stories.
A2: Technology has helped me communicate with and meet so many incredible passionate teachers! It has been a great pathway to multiple PD opportunities #moedchat
So true! I've connected with amazing people. I'm piloting inquiry algebra & was able to find a professor with a non-profit "fighting" inquiry learning in Canada to learn what he didn't like, so I could avoid pitfalls. My Ss are thriving & retaining like never before. #moedchat
We use Twitter, Email and phone class to make contact and explain what we are covering in the classroom. Mark Goodman was the first to answer me in 2013. Today he made his 5th speaking appearance. #MOedchat
A3 I’m always checking on my school email and calendar and I can be reached at anytime for about anything. Far more connected to my job than I ever was before #moedchat
A3. there's a little bit of give/take here... Tech is great, but there is now an expectation of "information right away". The good thing is this pushes me to find something better often #MOedchat
A3: Randsom wear wiped a lot of our systems almost a year ago. Ss still see tech as a toy not a tool. Unless I created the formatives & sumatives myself then the answers are likely to be found online. #moedchat
a3 Tech is constantly changing. I can log in to discover the entire GUI has changed and have hours of exploring to do to complete a 15-minute project. #moedchat
A3: Email contact or (insert other contact method here) 24/7... online testing w/o infrastructure to reduce the "tech frustrations"... "inappropriate usage" (Ss... not my own) #MOedchat
A3 I’m always checking on my school email and calendar and I can be reached at anytime for about anything. Far more connected to my job than I ever was before #moedchat
A2: Tech makes me more efficient. From file management in Drive to digital contact logs and to-do lists, I rely on tech to make it through the day. #moedchat
#MOedchat A3 Overload of Information!! Everyday there is something new that can make it better in the classroom. Trying to see what works for our schools and implement it takes time!
When CCSS first came out, most of us had little to go on and wrote our own. Now that I have well-aligned materials, I feel like my Ss are much better off in terms of vertical coherence & efficiency. I still use some home-made, but very carefully. #Moedchat
A2- tech allowed me to go home with just my computer cause student work was in the cloud. I remember the days of multiple trips to the car to take home bags and crates of stuff to provide feedback!! #thankstotech#MOedchat
A3 Infrastructure is difficult, Teaching kids to be careful with devices, teaching privacy skills, keeping up with the dizzying pace of tech growth, leveraging the “cool” stuff for learning #moedchat
A2: Assessment/progress checks are quicker and more immediate results... communicating with Ss and Ps is easier... PD via Twitter has changed the game too #MOedchat
A challenge that a gold star recipient can undertake! You are a forward thinking teacher, challenging your kids to be better. Parents should appreciate that and I’m sure that they do #moedchat
Q3 Technology has made my life more difficult because I can’t keep up with all the twitter chats! Also I find it energizing when challenged but hate when I can’t fix a colleagues tech related issue...if that makes sense #MOedchat
A3: There are times when I know that access to technology is not allowing me to disconnect from work in the evenings. Continually working to prioritize my time. #moedchat
Ss w/Ps who know the value, nudge them. Those who don't can be unaware. It needs to be in core classes for 1,000 reasons...but we're not there yet. Potential here (click "direct link" to see cat video embedded in mine) https://t.co/TFYOOJYdKR#moedchat
A3: There are times when I know that access to technology is not allowing me to disconnect from work in the evenings. Continually working to prioritize my time. #moedchat
Hello! Martha Doennig from SWMO!
A3: I have tried to use an all-digital to-do list (trello, Keep, Google sheet or doc) and I think I am less productive. I need a good old paper and pen and need to be able to cross things out and writing down my to-dos secures it to my memory.
I have a hard time turning off the computer when there might be a S stuck on a math problem, frustrated & alone. I can send them a link to a drawing & watch them work, correcting as they go. #moedchat
A4: With tech, it is easier to differentiate assignments and push to students, eliminating some of the anxiety or embarrassment of Ss. The fear of speaking up to share ideas or questions is eliminated for those Ss who are quiet or shy. #moedchat
A3- the true amount of different resources available to engage our students is amazing, but can also cause friction amongst techie and non-techie #moedchat
Get the kids opinions on the change, I’m sure they enjoy it more, right? No matter what there’ll always be nay-sayers, but the change will benefit them in the long run, anybody can find facts with just their voice these days #moedchat
#MOedchat A4 We have used Google classroom to submit assignments. Only problem with going paperless is Math. We don’t have touchscreen Chromebooks do not easy to show the work in math.
A4: physical textbooks, a lot of paper waste (I print as much in the whole year as I did in 2 weeks before 1:1), scheduling computer labs, a lot of after school tutoring since Ss can more easily teach me virtually #moedchat
A4: Walls... figuratively and literal. Possible connection with others around the world... and learning (and teaching) from home (or a nice chair on the beach??? #MOedchat
A4: Professor @wadhwa believes technology will largely shift teachers into a coaching role, with #AI assuming most teaching responsibilities. #MOedchat
A4 Certainly not the people, but lots of "stuff" but I have to admit I am still working on defining this stuff because I tend to blend it all. #moedchat
A4. tech, in the sense of information availability, has changed everything. Why do we ask Ss to memorize so many things? Does memorization have any real world value with today's tools? Why do we write pages and pages of notes? We should find problems and solve them #moedchat
A4 Dr. Kia here late!! We could eliminate the idea that class happens at a certain time. We can eliminate the disconnect between classroom and home/community/world/businesses. We can eliminate barriers to opportunity for kids who need it most #moedchat
Peardeck pretty much solves that problem for me. I have the pro version from my Boeing grant so my Ss can "draw." I'd probably use Nearpod for that if I didn't have Peardeck. Nearpod has free drawing but limited storage. #Moedchat
Students can take a picture of a math problem and the computer will solve it --- This may make some of us angry, but what does it mean for the future? The goal as to be "future ready"... not "curriculum or standard ready" #moedchat
Trying to think of some sort of motivational way to say that’s their loss but I can’t think of anything clever… #beenalongweek but they’ll need those challenges once they get to the real world #moedchat
#MOedchat Need to leave the chat because of time. Thanks for allowing me to share. Thanks to all you have shared their ideas! We are all in this together! Have a great rest of the week and weekend!
A3 Technology has made it more difficult for me to prioritize retaining information. I can GOOGLE anything and as a result I don't write my thinking out as much as I used to. #moedchat
A3 I’m always checking on my school email and calendar and I can be reached at anytime for about anything. Far more connected to my job than I ever was before #moedchat
A2 I LOVE that with technology I can solicit feedback and ideas from ANY of the educators/thinkers that I admire. Because of that I am a more informed professional and a more flexible educator. #moedchat
A5: Could, should, and/or will? Could: not everywhere: in our district we still have some Ps/Gs that aren't connected save via telephone or snail mail. Should: not all of them: I'm still an advocate of the firm handshake. Will we? No. #moedchat
A5: I have parents who are inexperienced with tech and struggle with checking grades online. I think there is something of value about the face-to-face interactions with parents as well. #moedchat
A3 I’m always checking on my school email and calendar and I can be reached at anytime for about anything. Far more connected to my job than I ever was before #moedchat
A5: yes, but Ts would have to ensure they are using electronic platforms to comminicate beyond simply posting a grade and hoping a parent sees and we can’t assume everyone has access to it. #moedchat
A5. not right now... The idea of relationship is fundamental to Ss and P success. There is no substiture for this communication- at this point. #MOedchat
Students can take a picture of a math problem and the computer will solve it --- This may make some of us angry, but what does it mean for the future? The goal as to be "future ready"... not "curriculum or standard ready" #moedchat
A5 I don't think conferences will ever go out of style but the way we do them SHOULD. I personally like the @BVCAPS model of inviting parents in for students to showcase their work and using other communication mediums besides in person to communicate other concerns #moedchat
Also emailing stuff from my home computer to my work computer and visa versa. Saving and re-saving, naming and renaming files. #ThankYouGoogle#moedchat
A2- tech allowed me to go home with just my computer cause student work was in the cloud. I remember the days of multiple trips to the car to take home bags and crates of stuff to provide feedback!! #thankstotech#MOedchat
A5 I do think that we have an outdated conference approach and would love to see innovation and technology redefine this structure-and not just to student-led conferences but to rethink the concept! #moedchat
A3 I’m always checking on my school email and calendar and I can be reached at anytime for about anything. Far more connected to my job than I ever was before #moedchat
a5 I think more frequent video conferencing would be better than fixed-time physical presence. I do webex conferences frequently and don't feel it's significantly less personal. But I suspect few of my Ps are comfy with webex yet. #moedchat
A5. One thing I have started doing is making a @YouTube video each week explaining the "why" behind what we are doing, and sending that to parents. It is going well so far, and is just another way to connect #moedchat
A5) Yes. Using apps like Remind, @ClassDojo, Google hangouts. There are plenty of options if Ts and parents, and District personal are on board. #moedchat
A5 I think@it’s most important still to the child to have their parent there being on the same page. I feel at times grades cans be overwhelming and misunderstood. #communication#moedchat
A1.2: As a T it is also huge as I was going to flip my classroom before we even went 1:1 and since am one of the most tech integrative Ts in our district--but still nothing like a lot of you all #moedchat
A5. One thing I have started doing is making a @YouTube video each week explaining the "why" behind what we are doing, and sending that to parents. It is going well so far, and is just another way to connect #moedchat
A5: On going communication is the key whether it is in person, by phone or email. I would rather hear from my child’s teacher more frequently than just at a parent teacher conference. #moedchat
A6. more global connections. Students in a class in Valdez, Alaska together on a project with Ss in Taiwan. Ss in Missouri working with a class in Florida in real time #moedchat
A6: I would hope to see more personalized learning. Shifting the focus to Ss learning, exploring, and growing at their own pace. I would hope the tech would be in place so that it could help Ts meet each student exactly where he or she is at. #moedchat
I know this- computers cannot take over paper in the classroom. Paper all always play an important roll in more than HALF of student performance and/or engagement. #moedchat
I see less and less paper and as educators we need to learn and figure out how our community wants to be informed and try and ensure that we are reaching all #moedchat
Q3: Endless emails! Stay up late catching up...still have a full inbox next morning. Also, when tech fails, you have to have a back up plan. I never had a book in my hand refuse to load...#MOedchat
A6 I saw someone mention teachers being more of a coach, I would agree with that. I always say that I am not really a teacher, I am a facilitator in my class, I think this will become the norm #moedchat
A5: easier implementation of advanced methods such as mastery learning, Standards Based assessment, easier and more accurate differentiation, more world-connected Ts & Ss, virtual offerings to expand class offerings in smaller districts #moedchat
A6 The school structure will need to keep changing-flexibility in scheduling and when students learn is becoming a norm and schools need to keep up. #moedchat
A1. Well...... with more and more districts going 1:1. I foresee snow days becoming a thing of the past. Students can connect and continue to learn and teachers can facilitate. #moedchat
A5 Interesting! Some Ts do an excellent job of connecting and communicating with Ps. For some Ps, P/T conferences are the only time Ps & Ts meet F2F. Should that be given up? Could there be other ways to bring the two together? #moedchat
Q2: Easy to share & collaborate with kids, parents, colleagues. Plan using online resources, no need ro lug 10 teacher manuals home. Easier access to PD & new ideas.
#moedchat
a6 I am hoping with tech & STEM integration (4C's) that Ss will "reach" for learning instead of waiting for "Alexa" to tell them. Retention is so much better when they learn out of curiosity prompted by inquiry. #moedchat
A6) I am not sure schools, truly people in education, are ready to allow anything to revolutionize education. We on Twitter are at the forefront of change for the better. #moedchat
A6: easier implementation of advanced methods such as mastery learning, Standards Based assessment, easier and more accurate differentiation, more world-connected Ts & Ss, virtual offerings to expand class offerings in smaller districts #moedchat
There is going to be a shift from "what do I want to be" to "what problem to I want to solve". This is going to effect the "college" as we know it as well #MOedchat
A6. I guess I view this question differently. I see a growing gap of schools, buildings, and Ts who use tech and are trained and can afford the needs to support the tech vs who don't or can't. #moedchat
One of the Catholic High Schools in my area, already do that. Every student has an iPad. On snow days they are expected to check in and complete work assigned. Don't have to make up that day #moedchat
