The #michED chat is a grassroots effort dedicated to giving teachers, students, and parents across Michigan a bigger voice in the conversation about education in our state. We welcome all voices through a variety of projects, media, and social networking. We’re trying to address educational issues through apolitical conversation, spreading ideas and stories of success from Michigan classrooms across the state, and helping teachers and students regain the courage to connect and demonstrate that schools in Michigan are creating amazing opportunities for learning. We want the face and voice of education in Michigan to be a mural of shared experiences and positive examples of connected learning.
Compliant students are doing what they're told. It looks like the s who creates the storyboard but lacks content to get to the next step.
Engagement means students are digging into the content, asking questions, and putting effort in the storyboard. #miched
A1 Compliant high school students often are quiet and gazing at their teacher. Engaged high school students look excited, you can almost see their wheels spinning. They are talking and answering and asking questions. #miched
A1. An engaged student ask questions out of curiosity and a genuine interest. You can see it on their faces at times. A compliant student does what they need to do to get the job done but doesn’t have the desire to ask the questions or dig deeper on their own. #MichED
A1: Compliant students do tasks without understanding why ... read the power point/presentation
Engaged students know the WHY and present from memory with passion #miched
A1: An engaged S is empowered to become a producer and composer of their own information. A compliant S is just following the rules and processes of the classroom dynamic #miched
Yes #miched compliant students doesn't ask the deep questions just ask questions to get answers to the assignment. Engaged students dig deep and often go off topic to new places
A1 I see many compliant Ss who are going through the motions (but you can tell nothing is sticking and they won't remember what they did/learned/saw by later the same day). Engaged Ss are sponges who are soaking in and struggling with the content. #michED
A1: compliant: the answer is 6
Engaged: the answer is 6 because I had to do inverse operations to isolate the variable and I was able to justify my answer my proving that it is a solution by plugging it back into my equation. #michED
Q2 Sometimes we model compliance through PBIS examples😞 or in elementary schools with red, yellow, green cards. It isn’t the policy or the card, but the instructional framing of the behaviors is where it can get sticky. #miched
A2. As educators we have to comply in many areas. School Improvement serves to be valuable when the process is reflective and done so in order to truly improve and grow. We need to comply with the goals and mission of our districts. Those are both necessary and good. #miched
Compliance looks like a T consistently modeling school code of conduct expectations. It is necessary for Ss to see the adults in their lives being held accountable for their actions. #miched
A2: what appropriate interactions in the halls look like, where are papers turned in, what should I do if I need help. These things are stressed early in the school year. #michED
Well only if the student comes up with all of that on own without prompts or modeling ... engaged is more 6 but if I change the variables and set up my own problem it would be 8 #miched
I agree, some of it is needed, by developing relationships with S where there is mutual respect in a safely fostered environment, it allows for S to take exploratory risks. They respect the boundaries, naturally, to support one another in having a unified space to explore #miched
A3: Modeling engagement is done with passion: It is where students feel the lesson not hear it #michED Engaged means going the extra mile and figuring it out without the how
We model engagement by asking Ss to expand on their thoughts, asking deeper meaningful questions that provoke Ss thinking and conversation. We model engagement by bringing our passions to the classroom and tying them into the relevant content. #miched
Q4: How do we work with non-compliant learners? #michED
(YES, relationships help but what if a strong relationship is present but students still doesn't want to comply)
Q2: Compliance is needed when there are larger masses of people. We teach this order to students in the classroom; however, it has become the norm for structure. Ss are disengaged, so we must take risks & explore other ways to help them take owenership for their learning #miched
A4: First acknowledge that they may not want or like to do everything but the NEEDS to complete task outweighs the wants... Give examples of when compliance has to happen in our lives #miched
Q5. It’s always great to seek the knowledge of our colleagues. Student Study Process can help. If that doesn’t work and we’ve reached out to parents, our county resources such as the MISD also have great ideas as outside opinions and experts. #miched

A3: Modeling engagement starts with ourselves and the passion we bring. By creating open spaces for students to safely explore their thoughts, ideas, knowledge and passions. We must engage in them as individuals and develop strong trusting relationships. #miched
I struggle w/this 1 because well-rounded individuals are needed in society & that means introducing Ss 2 concepts they may not like. If they've truly explored it & still decide it's not for them ok move on. The tricky part is ensuring true engagement w/the subject matter. #miched
A4: Each non-compliant learner is unique and we need to work to figure out the root of the non-compliance. Some Ss behave inappropriately because the content is too challenging (maybe they need more scaffolding in the lesson). #michED
A5: Constant compliance without engagement could turn into apathy for learning. If a Tt doesn’t recognize a student’s attitudetowards learning soon enough in high school, teenage angst and peer pressure could squash all learning! #miched.
A5: We must look to each student and discover what will engage them as individuals. What are their passions, strengths, and weaknesses? We must hone in on those and keep working and allow them to see that you support and believe in their potential. #miched
YES, I struggle here too... Hold idea of chat tonight ... Student wants to be a mechanic so doesn't want to engage in school unless in that area of knowledge ... #miched should I just let it go or push???
A5. We can’t force anyone to love something they just aren’t interested in. We can still have expectations and tasks they need to accomplish to demonstrate learning. In this case, if you’ve done your best to engage and they are only willing to comply, that’s ok. #miched
A6 Depending on the activity I think most 8th graders need a change about every 15 minutes (movement, talking, shift of activity, intensity). Although, for 'Hour of Code' today many of my 8th graders were INTO their activity for the entire period. #michED
A6: Seems students vary but I find 20 minutes max and it doesn't carry over from day to day so have to reenergize each day. They need to be moving and talking #miched
There's always a limit. @lkolb shared her story about the initial PowerPoint implantation. Beyond the tech for engagement, there is only so long people can stay focused. It requires a variety of tools and strategies to continuously engage Ss throughout the day. #miched
My passion in teaching a subject may not be your passion. I can teach you to be a better reader and pour my heart and soul into it but it doesn’t mean we have failed if at the end of the day your passion as a student still isn’t reading. #miched
I wonder about the message about compliance for compliance sake. Don't Ss check out with that argument?
I agree that there are things we all have to do. I just know my experience is that argument kills student wish to engage in the conversation.
#miched
A6: I think carryover can’t be counted even for the Tt. Sometimes what was cool today is not tomorrow. Although there is something to be said for those “one hit wonders” I am a firm believe in our ability to pay attention can be measured by our years in age. #miched
a7: Most jobs desire more compliance than engagement: Want employees who show up, complete tasks but engaged employees satisfy the customers best and are innovative but might not complete ALL tasks #miched
A7: job title Mom, preferred engagement!! Depending on day, compliance. Military, law enforcement, etc Compliance w/ a splash of engagement in the act of protection. #miched
Can I cop out and say both? If leadership isn't exhibiting the desired behavior I have a hard time with compliance and respect. That being said, it's hard being around long-time coworkers who are just compliant and aren't pushing for engaging and innovative ideas/projects #miched
A7: I think compliance becomes the norm for us in the workplace because we have been so conditioned; it is valued because it often allows people to not speak up and just go with what they are told. Ss and society become good rule followers. #miched
