Happy Birthday, #bcedchat. I can't believe it's been 5 years since @MsVictoriaOlson and I connected on #21stedchat and started on the road to this amazing learning experience. #bcedchat
Hi. Christine from the Sunshine Coast, BC... and one of the co-moderators of #bcedchat.
HAPPY 5TH ANNIVERSARY!!!
I am a sessional instructor and educational researcher... and former secondary math teacher.
Hi #bcedchat moderators. Stella here from Victoria BC. Looking forward to being on vacation soon. Grade 1/2 teacher. Happy Birthday. Have loved the conversations this year.
My name is @MissJalisaLogan, 7th and 8th grade, U.S., instructional technology resource teacher, I'm interested in learning about various cultural perspectives on education. #bcedchat
A1: Five years ago I had just graduated with my MFA and decided to change careers before I had even started. I joined an alt cert program and started teaching immediately. #bcedchat
Remembering to breathe and reflect as we head into the last 4 days. These days can be hard on both little and big people in the building. #bekind#BCEdChat#breathe#reflect
A1: 5 years ago I was finishing my masters, had a newborn, was teaching in #sd36learn enjoying myself, coaching sports and helping developing a sense of community at my school #bcedchat
A1 reflecting on this past year. I can honestly say this was my biggest growth year EVER academically professionally and as a learner. 5 years ago I thought I was an OK Teacher and struggling to stay afloat. Now I know I’m a good teacher and can now swim #bcedchat
A1 5 years ago I was preparing my learning community for a thing called eportfolio. @k_timms and I were hoping my oldest might grad with a folio and no my a traditional transcript....it was close.... #BCedchat
A2. That I can do whatever I put my mind to. I finished my dissertation... finally. Successfully defended (best interview ever!!). It's only as big as you perceive/believe it to be. #bcedchat
A1: The truth? Five years ago I was not participating in #bcedchat. Just lurked and learned. Was terrified of the pace of the conversations. Did not know how to keep up and wished for f2f. ... but look at me now?!
A2 my biggest aha moment is understanding that teaching has nothing to do with teaching. It is all about relationships #kidsmatter#kidsdeserveit#bcedchat
A2 that there is still a gap (and systemic barriers) to inclusionary practice and accepting mental health on the same level as physical health (comment that still burns me: well the anxiety only comes out at home so we don’t need to deal with it at school) #BCedchat
Hey #bcedchat! Liz sd43 teacher. FINISHED my report cards!!
A1. 5 years ago I was at my previous school getting ready to spend 2 weeks in Kenya (which was AMAZING!)
A2 big aha... change of province meant dealing with old multiple choice provincial ma/sc exams. biggest thrill that they stopped and a new curriculum came. #bcedchat
A2: There were too many aha moments this year as I started my Masters program at SFU! And it's not until this yr I felt that I'm a competent math tchr. #bcedchat
A2: Also it is always worth stepping out and taking a risk even if things don't go to plan. You never know who you inspire just by taking teh step! #bcedchat
A2 my biggest aha moment is understanding that teaching has nothing to do with teaching. It is all about relationships #kidsmatter#kidsdeserveit#bcedchat
A2 my biggest aha moment is understanding that teaching has nothing to do with teaching. It is all about relationships #kidsmatter#kidsdeserveit#bcedchat
A2- Biggest aha moment- There is more than meets the eye for both teachers and students- everyone comes in with their invisible knapsacks- we just need to let them know we care #bcedchat#sd42#sd36learn
A3: Summer is a time to relax, so I'm only doing professional activities that I enjoy. If I'm not enjoying it, it can wait. I have all year to do the tedious stuff. #bcedchat
A2. Love the revised curriculum. it puts into words and gives "legit" status to the stuff that we've been talking about forever in Learning Services. #bcedchat
Yup. I guess I’m in a weird mood on this fifth celebration. I’m always learning, though. And when I stop learning, that’s when I need to stop being an educator. #bcedchat
A3 There are some things I enjoy learning enough that it is like having personal down time. No balance required when I really enjoy something. #bcedchat
A3: My almost adult kids and husband @BobBobfleming keep me grounded and enable me to rest. Keeping healthy and fit is also important. Right now tiredness is taking over and eventually I will feel human again. #bcedchat
A3 start with two workshops in the first two weeks, then going to volunteers in some festivals and meet some friends. Make sure i have loads of deep sleep, fitbit will tell me #bcedchat
A3 reading my “gotta read” pile...talking with my new learning community....spending time with my graduating daughter who is off to @WaterlooENG in a few short week! #BCedchat
A3: We start our 6 week summer term tomorrow. We’ve started a staff chat focusing on differentiation. Doing a book study on Inquiry Mindset. Train staff on twitter PD & apply new ideas. #DiffEdu#bcedchat
Seriously? The comment regarding anxiety is absurd... Yes, there are certainly still work to do in the area of mental health! Such an important topic! #bcedchat
A3: Be intentional about using times in which you don't have to focus to much the task in front for professional learning opportunity. For example, use long drives or travel times to listen to audio books or watch webinars. #bcedchat
And it’s the “hidden” factor that is the toughest. People will adapt to great extremes for the kid in a cast... but the kid for whom the open door is the toughest to go through....not always as much... #bcedchat
A3 not gonna lie @Teachinginthe21 now has me thinking. The educator in me wants to say read all the books I didn’t have time to read this year. The mom in me wants to say spend time with family and the exhausted old me wants to say wine 🍷#bcedchat
A4: #bcedchat has done soooo much already! I am still processing it all! I teach in a small school so connecting with others on a Sunday night has just been wonderful. Love hearing what is going on in schools in BC. Love knowing that I am not alone in my enthusiasm!
A2: Aha = all behaviour has a reason & we need to move from judgement about the student to curiosity about the “why” behind the behaviour. Love @StuartShanker quote “see a child differently you see a different child” #bcedchat
Dang... I want to read a tonne too... but my mind move way faster than my eyes can read. I need to practice patience and perseverance. I have a HUGE pile of books to read. #bcedchat
I would have to agree with the many people that said my aha moment would have to be about putting relationships at the top of the priority list. I love the video with the title Every Child needs a champion. Teachers must like their kids to teach effectively. #bcedchat
A4: I love the weekly chat and opportunity for reflection and new ideas that BCEdChat provides. I loved differences in topics and also the growth in PLN that this has allowed me. There has been some amazing resource sharing. So more of what I have seen, keep it up! #bcedchat
A4: What about a live #bcedchat where a group of moderators meet f2f with other local #PLN and questions are tweeted and responded to from a fun place (Pub PD or a #tweetup)?
A5. I love to acknowledge learning. Sometimes this is hard to do without seeming like I'm rewarding achievement. I love listening for the soft skills and longterm impact on self. That's exciting. #bcedchat
A5: Our annual Bike a Thon has a built in (free) carnival, during winter season we have potluck & each class performs a song. We do a lot of class parties. #bcedchat
A5 We personalize that according to the event and the needs of the kid. Some of our kids actually short circuit from praise when they are new to the program; they sadly have received mostly negative feedback, which is what led them to us. #bcedchat

Shhh...Should we tell @RosePillay1 that the moderators are meeting f2f in July to talk about the future of #BCEdChat? Whoops...cat out of the bag now! :)
Q6: Craig @CraigMah asks...How did you show gratitude towards members of your classroom or school community at the end of this year? How was gratitude expressed to you? #bcedchat
Q6: Craig @CraigMah asks...How did you show gratitude towards members of your classroom or school community at the end of this year? How was gratitude expressed to you? #bcedchat
The other challenge is sometimes we're designing the Qs the day of the chat. It's a great idea, but balancing #BCEdChat and our work in schools can be a tightrope walk! :)
A6. Hmm... The gratitude is ongoing with my #educ454e100 class. I blog about them but also they do some pretty awesome things to blog about. The gratitude and respect are mutual.
For me, I like the idea of ongoing sharing of ideas... motivating each other... #bcedchat
Q6: Craig @CraigMah asks...How did you show gratitude towards members of your classroom or school community at the end of this year? How was gratitude expressed to you? #bcedchat
A5: I've been trying to tweet most days a + in the classrm or school. Trying to flood positive @HammondSD42 lots to celebrate and getting out positives creates visiblilty. Ss choose when they want me to share or celebrate something, frequently they take the photos. #bcedchat
A6: I have bought my students gifts for tomorrow (last day), for colleagues it is all connected to coffee. Words mean the most though. Cards are always wonderful. #bcedchat
A6: Usually we help each other clean our classrooms, but I spent the bulk of the year in a district office. Gratitude was shown with food and daily conversation. I will miss it. #bcedchat
Q6: Craig @CraigMah asks...How did you show gratitude towards members of your classroom or school community at the end of this year? How was gratitude expressed to you? #bcedchat
A6. I had food treats for both classes. I ask all my students to sign my yearbook. I have a very large bag of treats to go with the thank you notes I'll be writing this week to my team, the secretaries, the counsellors, youth workers and admin. Gratitude is important! #bcedchat
#bcedchat A4: Rose's idea of a live chat made me think of several ideas. 1. Play an ignite session and then discuss it.
2. Put up an image and have people discuss how the image speaks to them of education or learning or . . .
#bcedchat I like slow chats as they can go global more easily through the timezones.
I wonder about several chat groups joining together in the summer for a common chat?
A5 expansion. More mods (eso guest ones) and possible blending into special event days such as the provincial day - perhaps even YouTube living events #BCedchat people are presenting?
A7. Great question Vic. I just got through the last 5 years... most of it unplanned... much like the next 5 years. I hope to venture forward as a writer, entrepreneur, and public speaker. I say that... let's see what happens. I am a teacher at heart and I LOVE TO LEARN. #bcedchat

True. I don't mind missing questions at all during our 1-hour #bcedchat. Just feel that the slow chat format will allow me to participate in every question! :)

#bcedchat A4: I wonder too about how we often use the summer to catch up on some excellent blogs & books. #bcedchat summer slow chats on a certain blog or book study?
PS> I haven't had time to read all the earlier posts yet that is why I'm working on the later Qs.
A7 I see more Skype or f2f meetings of your plns. on line opens our world for so much learning and opportunities or reasons to travel and share #bcedchat
There are 9 questions in this chat for 9 #bcedchat co-mods. It's going fast. No worries. Slow chat is coming in a couple of weeks and this chat is almost over. #bcedchat

A6: Gratitude is important my Ss baked 🍪 for our little buddies and all staff, sent Grat stickies- each S writes one thing they appreciate to a staff. Grat letters to their parents were sent. I send Gratitude letters to each S over summer, and we are having a party. #bcedchat
Q8: D’Alice @DAliceMarsh asks...Where do you hope to be in the next 5 years? With your teaching/professional life? With your personal life? Any big changes? #bcedchat
I do hope #bcedchat and other professional learning communities stay online and visible to the public. It boosts our profession to see people bettering themselves - and we learn from those who share, even if we don’t!
Q8: D’Alice @DAliceMarsh asks...Where do you hope to be in the next 5 years? With your teaching/professional life? With your personal life? Any big changes? #bcedchat
I think the interactive nature of online networking will develop so it looks less like shouting out answers to building something together. I think we've started doing this a few times in #bcedchat but would like to see the innovation continue to develop.
A5. I hope to write the book about my mom within 5 years. I hope to be published as well (i.e. academic articles). I hope to be 50lbs lighter. LOL. I'll be in my 50's in 5 years... let phase 3 of my midlife "situation" begin!!! #bcedchat
Q8: D’Alice @DAliceMarsh asks...Where do you hope to be in the next 5 years? With your teaching/professional life? With your personal life? Any big changes? #bcedchat
I also wish to see BC educators continue improving themselves now that my own child is here in the world and will learn from those awesome people soon enough. #bcedchat, meet Bennett!
A7. would love to see more teachers participating in these kinds of activities. Thinking about how I could use them with my students. In 5 years, we may be conversing with holograms of each other! #bcedchat
Q8 In 5 years, I hope to be a certified counsellor, and continue working with at-risk youth on their mental health issues. I also hope to be teaching young teachers to better understand at-risk youth and guide them toward success. #bcedchat
A7: I am looking forward to connecting with the #bcedchat community during my school day with something like Skype. Had a great time on Friday doing #mysteryskype with @teachermrskhan and @JanetIFHo Would love to see teacm teaching across BC.
A8. I hope to write the book about my mom within 5 years. I hope to be published as well (i.e. academic articles). I hope to be 50lbs lighter. LOL. I'll be in my 50's in 5 years... let phase 3 of my midlife "situation" begin!!! #bcedchat

A8: "Alive and Kicking" will be the hope both personally and professionally. I would have crossed a milestone b-day by that time. Would love to work for Ministry of Ed.
#bcedchat
I also wish to see BC educators continue improving themselves now that my own child is here in the world and will learn from those awesome people soon enough. #bcedchat, meet Bennett!
Nailed it! #bcedchat Build could be done as a concept study with a primary, intermediate, secondary component on the same concept. Product, process, metacognition being exposed as we go. Must be a slow chat though and relevant for the coming year. Sounds like a cool summer idea

Certainly challenging to break through with a medium such as Twitter. Benefits and drawbacks with every tool, of course, but we love new ideas and topics that get our community creating! #bcedchat
A8: Publish a book that people actually read. Shift my energy into online PDs and the creation of digital resources. Generate enough passive income to take a few years off. I'm so tired. I'm trying my best but I'm so tired. #bcedchat
Q8: D’Alice @DAliceMarsh asks...Where do you hope to be in the next 5 years? With your teaching/professional life? With your personal life? Any big changes? #bcedchat
Q9: Ian @technolandy asks….With our pension forms arriving over the past couple of weeks, what disruption or innovation do you think (or hope) may next change why & how we do what we do before your retirement date? #bcedchat
I also wish to see BC educators continue improving themselves now that my own child is here in the world and will learn from those awesome people soon enough. #bcedchat, meet Bennett!
A8: In the process of trying to answer that question. So many possibilities. Will be spending the next year thoughtfully looking at opportunities. #bcedchat
Q9: Ian @technolandy asks….With our pension forms arriving over the past couple of weeks, what disruption or innovation do you think (or hope) may next change why & how we do what we do before your retirement date? #bcedchat
Good night #bcedchat and thank you for the past 5 years of awesomeness and growing my PLN. but mostly thank you for the true friendships that I have formed from the amazing people here on Sunday nights...too many to name #youknowwhoyouare#summercamp2018
A9. No pension form for me. I walked away from that, but I know what you speak of. I hope to have an impact on student learning and professional learning experiences with the work that I do. Math Ed, policy, and leadership focused. Let's see what happens. #bcedchat
Q9: Ian @technolandy asks….With our pension forms arriving over the past couple of weeks, what disruption or innovation do you think (or hope) may next change why & how we do what we do before your retirement date? #bcedchat
A9 I’m hoping that the work being done on mental wellness continues to enhance the work of schooling (and that virtual reality field trips and schooling become more available!) and more efolios #BCedchat
#bcedchat A9: Being "retired", I can't do "before" but the shortages certainly have changed the "after" component of pensions, TOC rolls and the complexity of many pension funds running short.
Q9: Ian @technolandy asks….With our pension forms arriving over the past couple of weeks, what disruption or innovation do you think (or hope) may next change why & how we do what we do before your retirement date? #bcedchat
A9 The pension form is not really something that affects me. Although retirement is technically not too far off for me, I have no intention of completely stopping work; just changing the format. 😀 #bcedchat
Good night #bcedchat and thank you for the past 5 years of awesomeness and growing my PLN. but mostly thank you for the true friendships that I have formed from the amazing people here on Sunday nights...too many to name #youknowwhoyouare#summercamp2018
A9: Technology is no longer considered an additive to our daily practice. It's now just woven into learning and teaching, as much as the pencil has been in the past. #bcedchat
There will be no #bcedchat next Sunday, July 1st. It’s Canada Day!!!
We’ll be back with SUMMER SLOW CHAT. Discussing the Core Competencies. One question per week starting July 8th.
