#CreateEdu#whatisschool
Hi all @ #whatisschool and #createedu , Priya , Visual arts educator from Singapore . What an exciting topic today...love it as a scrapbooker and art journalist who loves to share personal narratives via visual storytelling
In schools, we are seeing a shift toward prioritizing personal narratives and storytelling. Why do you feel it is important to support students to share their stories? #whatisschool#CreateEdu
Q1) In schools, we are seeing a shift toward prioritizing personal narratives and storytelling. Why do you feel it is important to support students to share their stories? #whatisschool#createedu
In schools, we are seeing a shift toward prioritizing personal narratives and storytelling. Why do you feel it is important to support students to share their stories? #whatisschool#CreateEdu
A1: Important for students to learn how to communicate thru multiple mediums. Learn how to communicate shareworthy information thru multiple mediums (posters, videos, ebooks, etc). Valuable, transferable skills. #whatisschool#createedu
A1: Sometimes, understanding our personal narrative connects us to important non-fiction issues and topics. We understand the world better when we understand ourselves. #whatisschool
A1 sharing personal stories builds relationships btw people and builds a class culture. Also, provides space for Ss to converse with others - it is such a busy world for families. #whatisschool#createedu
A1: Storytelling is one of the greatest gifts and a way to personalise learning. Students need to feel comfortable sharing their own story and to use their own imagination #whatisschool#createedu
A1
- it is important that Ss have self-awareness, understanding who they are & why they want to learn certain things
- Schools teach Ss abt others; but also important to reflect on who they are
- storytelling is a great way to discover the self
#CreateEdu#whatisschool
Q1) In schools, we are seeing a shift toward prioritizing personal narratives and storytelling. Why do you feel it is important to support students to share their stories? #whatisschool#createedu
A1)Personal narratives are meaningful to students. In a world where every classroom is diverse, sharing authentic personal narratives can help in developing empathy, growth mindset and gratefulness in an instant gratification world. Great way for self-reflection #whatisschool
Making connections is important, as is the ability to re-tell what we've learned through multiple formats... see how the information translates. #whatisschool#createedu
A1: Because human beings are designed to preferentially remember and understand the world through stories. Stories help us reflect on who we are and the things we experience. This is why stories are so powerful. #whatisschool#createedu
A1: by telling their stories, our Ss feel truly connected and safe and ready to take on whatever challenge comes their way, whether it be academic or social. #createedu#whatisschool
A1b) Storytelling is a powerful way of reflecting on our experiences and making connections. Art of visual storytelling is as old as human race itself with our earliest forms of communication are visual in nature #whatisschool
What formats do you have your students complete personal narratives in? Traditional writing, ebook, poster, video, animation, etc? #whatisschool#createedu
In schools, we are seeing a shift toward prioritizing personal narratives and storytelling. Why do you feel it is important to support students to share their stories? #whatisschool#CreateEdu
Like @flipgrid and @BookCreatorApp - two of the best world-wide collaborative platforms that I am trying to promote like crazy! So much endless potential to story tell creatively. #whatisschool#createedu

@aiaddysonzhang, @HmccoyESC11, @Flipgrid, @BookCreatorApp
A1 Children need to have a variety of tools available to share their stories but they need to feel valued and listened to by their peers and educator or no amount of super tools will work #whatisschool
A1: In today's world of transformational change, sometimes all we need for a hook is a story to capture attention and to spark curiosity #whatisschool#createedu
A1. Stories help build a bigger picture. Often bringing light to strengths and sense to fears. Personal stories can also assist with developing empathy and relationships. #whatisschool#createedu
A1: Unless we provide students with a voice to tell, share and use their stories as building blocks for their growth, deep learning is unlikely to happen, in my view #whatisschool
There are various formats and we can choose based on our students age, resources available etc . I will share the details when I share answer for q5 #whatisschool
A1: As a math T, the most common question is "When will I ever use this?" Personal narratives and connections make the math meaningful and help students see the purpose. #whatisschool#createedu
Great question, Ben. Hope you don't mind me joining
My Ss use @AdobeSpark to create digital stories including written words, visuals, and videos. We also do LinkedIn articles, tweets, and livestreaming on FB & Instagram
How about you?
#CreateEdu#whatisschool
Amazing how a powerful story, and flashy presentation of said story, is all we need to capture our attention. Gimmicks may draw us in but the underlying story needs to be relatable and strong to make the most impact! #whatisschool#createedu
1A. Any time you can add student voice to their work it brings it home to my students. . I know this is true in the Art Studio. It also Increases the quality of work🎨 #whatisschool
A1 It is incredably important to learn to view the world from other people's vantage. That is to seriously consider and value your classmates stories. #WhatIsSchool#CreateEdu
Amen! Cannot agree more with you. Storytelling is an art and science! Learn to craft that hook is such an important skill.
I am learning everyday to improve my storytelling skills
#CreateEdu#whatisschool
Thanks, George! It's been a crazy week both personally and professionally, but today's #createedu and #whatisschool and then tomorrow is Friday so there's that... #TGIF

love it, Ben!
Have you discovered that our students, so-called "digital natives", are not necessarily as digitally savvy as we assumed ... in terms of using tools for learning & career development purposes

A1 stories also are a great way to create disucssion around sensitive topics. They provide a third point to talk about - avoiding the personal focus to help Ss with personal issues share without divulging personal sensitive issues #whatisschool#createedu
Jumping in - YES! We assume our kids know how to navigate all technology but that isn't true. They might know how to navigate youtube but that doesn't mean they are know how to use tech well. #whatisschool#createedu

A1 “According to Uri Hasson from Princeton, a story is the only way to activate parts in the brain so that a listener turns the story into their own idea and experience” https://t.co/UN2jc9xVjW#whatisschool
A2: When we are openly expressing ideas in our classrooms we open the door to discussion. We can have more free-flowing, organic conversations, seeing where we agree with our classmates and issues we might see a little differently too. #whatisschool#createedu
A2: Sometimes students hold back from expressing their thoughts and opinions because they are fearful of being wrong. Creating a culture of openness to share is key #WhatIsSchool#createedu
There is a huge difference between being able to use Facebook and Instagram and understanding how they work, and the philosophical and legal questions they raise for personal privacy. #WhatIsSchool#CreateEdu

YES! Basic things like typing skills aren't really taught in our lower grades and we are seeing the negative impact in our higher grades. Also, when our kids transition from Chromebooks to BYOD there is a big struggle. We dont do enough to bridge the gap. #whatisschool#createedu
In reply to
@aiaddysonzhang, @rramapriya, @AdobeSpark, @canva, @BookCreatorApp, @Flipgrid, @Powtoon
A2.
- Ss do NOT just learn from teachers; they learn from each
- When they open up, they create synergy that brings learning to a new level & also helps activates the talents within
#whatisschool#createedu
A2) Providing non judgemental safe spaces for students to explore personal and social identity helps the children feel valued and respected. It provides an opportunity open ended discussions #whatisschool#createedu
A2: I think that if those ideas are guided by teachers in ways that can assist students to develop understanding and accepting of others' ideas then it can be very useful. They need to be guided with a purpose #whatisschool
Kids can pick up on how to navigate a program or platform with limited to no training. What is important is the message, the content, etc. that should be focused on. The why, the what, not the how. #whatisschool#createedu

A2: At times, I have tried to explain the same idea in 5 different ways & a S still doesn't understand but when another S explains it, they get it! Create a classroom where all Ss feel they are heard. #whatisschool#createedu
exactly, Courtney!
Most of my Ss use social and digital tools for pure entertainment.
it is always interesting to hear from them saying that they didn't know they can use these tools for learning

A2 if you can get one student to open verbally with their story it can spark a chain of small hands in the air desperate to share ! That's a super teaching moment ❤️ #whatisschool
A2: The more we practice sharing openly, the deeper our connections. As long as we develop protocols for respectful sharing and listening without judgement, everyone wins and our collective potential as a community of learners can be realized! #createedu#whatisschool
A2: builds habits of mind like #empathy, open mindedness, fair mindedness and examining diff perspectives - if we share our stories, we get to know each other and build those skills. #whatisschool
Cannot agree more with you.
i just had the great honor to interview Seth Godin who said that our edu is training students to become mediocre.... i have to agree w/ him unfortunately
Ss are so afraid of making mistakes..."will this on the exam?"...
#whatisschool#createedu
A2 open expression of ideas helps to create trust in a learning community. Once extablished, Ss are able to support one another both academically and socially. When the walls are down, real listening and dialogue can begin! #whatisschool#createedu
A2: at the end of the day, we are humans, social beings and stories connect us - as humans that is what we crave - connections and for ppl to care and show kindness. #whatisschool
A2: In my mind, open expression of ideas is where we want to get to---creating safe spaces for open expression of ideas feels like how we get there. #whatisschool#CreateEdu
It’s significant thus helping the students to have a systematical understanding about the storytelling thereby increasing their professional. Nevertheless, it plays a vital role in their daily life. #CreateEdu#whatisschool.
A2 you have to open you the actual design of the activity or experience to students. That creates choices for students about their own ideas. #WhatIsSchool
Hi #whatisschool! Had a late meeting at school, but wanted to make sure I got to this chat. First time here. Heard great things about this chat. I'm Genny from Memphis and I teach if the kids grades 3 through 5
A2: Open expression of ideas allows for new connections to be made. The opportunity for an Ah-ha moment that can impact future ideas or opinions about the world around them. #whatisschool
One thing I see in our school is the culture outside of school doesn't allow students to make mistakes & learn on their own. They all have helpers, yayas, drivers that handle everything for them. School isn't teaching them what they are missing at home. #whatisschool#createedu
Totally. They are savy in terms of device usage (they have no fear) and entertainment. But, as a tool, they need set boundaries and guidance from the adults in their lives. #whatisschool#createedu
In reply to
@aiaddysonzhang, @heyheyman, @rramapriya, @AdobeSpark, @canva, @BookCreatorApp, @Flipgrid, @Powtoon
That's why we need to ask open ended Qs = not just personally but through the curriculum as well - #inquiry that leads to critical thinking and SEL development. #whatisschool#createedu
A2 you can’t wait until students are creating representations of knowledge. At that point they are creating what you envision the product should be. #WhatIsSchool
This is also the FIRST generation where everything they have ever done from an early age will last online forever. That's powerful. Mistakes at a young age could come back and haunt them later. Red flag!! #whatisschool#createedu

A1: Allowing kids to tell their stories says to them, “You matter,” gives them a voice, & helps them see that they are their own storyteller; hence, may be able to write the next chapter. It also allows us to see ourselves in their shoes. #whatisschool#Here4kids
Q3) What topics do you find your students are personally interested in exploring? What topics do you feel are of critical importance and need to be further addressed? #whatisschool#createedu
What topics do you find your students are personally interested in exploring? What topics do you feel are of critical importance and need to be further addressed? #whatisschool
SOOOO related! too protective of our kids!
I have learned so much from my failures and mistakes.
And today's kids need to learn how to figure things out on their own!
too protective and too structured
#whatisschool#createedu
A2: Sooo important to let every voice be heard. Storytellling is an expression from heart and soul. Honor it, connect with it, grow from it! #whatisschool
But it can be dangerous to let kids loose online and just "figure things out". The implications there could be really dangerous! #whatisschool#createedu
Makes me wonder, should we simply ask our students "Is this a safe space for open expression of ideas for you?" and then "How can we make this a safe space for open expression of ideas for you?" #whatisschool#CreateEdu
A2. A safe space for sharing ideas can also provide a safe space for Ss wellbeing. Building a safe culture or speaking up and also listening is a better place for all #whatisschool#createedu
What topics do you find your students are personally interested in exploring? What topics do you feel are of critical importance and need to be further addressed? #whatisschool
Kids don't express their thoughts and opinions because they don't get a chance to offer their thoughts and opinions. You can talk "culture" all you want, but if they are not asked a good question than they will never open up. #whatisschool
i LOVE this question!
i bet some students will be afraid to voice their true opinions.
i am teaching all of my classes online now. students seem to open up more than a face-to-face class. interesting
#whatisschool#createedu
A3: I find students of all ages genuinely want to solve problems. The closer to home and reality they are the more engaged they are! Make it real and make a difference #whatisschool#createedu
A3) students love to explore and share about their family roots, places they travel, hobbies, technology / games that they love, latest trends that they are following #whatisschool#createedu
A3: interested in exploring issues directly impacts them - global issues, local issues, family issues. We need to infuse #socialjustice & #equity & #inclusion throughout the curriculum using big ideas (env't, racism, LGBTQ, #indigenous) #whatisschool
So true. We have these conversations constantly with Ss and my own kids. Hard for them to relate to thinking about future effects as their head space is the 'here and now'. #whatisschool#createedu
In reply to
@heyheyman, @aiaddysonzhang, @rramapriya, @AdobeSpark, @canva, @BookCreatorApp, @Flipgrid, @Powtoon
A1: Ss should be encouraged to tell their stories so they know we are listening, that we care. If we don’t take time to hear their story, to truly know THEM, why should they trust us? #whatisschool
A3: I find students want so figure out how to teach them a lot of things they don't know and aren't learning in school. They learn a lot from YouTube and can teach them almost anything. That's ridiculously cool, innovative and awesome! #whatisschool#createedu
2A. It is always a good to bring everyone’s voice to the classroom. It’s better to discuss social norms , ideas , and values so others can learn from each other and strive to be a contributing member of this planet 🌎🌍🌏 We are more alike than different. 🎨#whatisschool
A3: we have to remember we teach kids not the curriculum and curriculum teaches us WHAT to think but not HOW to teach it - you can be creative and infuse big ideas Ss want to learn. #whatisschool#createedu
That is why it is important to have students in the process of creating a learning experince. When they are part of the process, that can trust what is created and said #WhatIsSchool
A3) not in the classroom personally but my 5th grade daughter has a big interest in learning more about graphic design and animation, looking at a magnet middle school @my_pcs that offers this #whatisschool
A3: Topics I have found students are personally interested in exploring
PreK-3: connection to self, connections to family
Grades 3-6: connections to interests, connections to friends
Grades 7-12: #socialjustice, #socialgood, connections to world, advocacy
#whatisschool#CreateEdu
A3
- i teach undergraduate students. i found that my students enjoy talking about things that help them become career ready
- starting last year, more Ss seem to be interested in exploring entrepreneurship which is what i am passionate about as well
#whatisschool#createedu
What topics do you find your students are personally interested in exploring? What topics do you feel are of critical importance and need to be further addressed? #whatisschool
A2: Ideas are usually taken as mental representational images of some objects. However, when open expression of ideas are analyzed, it delivers viable results. #whatisschool#CreateEdu.
A1: Because everyone has a story. When anyone feels valued enough to share their story, their relationship and trust with others deepens. They will be more open to taking risks and letting their uniqueness shine. This applies to everyone, not only students. #whatisschool
A3: Lots of issues in the News. Anything involving the US President, the South China Sea, Asia in general. We live in very "interesting times" for better or worse. This is an interesting era. #createedu#whatisschool
Because the world they live in has made them the most ego-centric, self-focused generation. Not fully to blame... social media and instant communication has had some negative impacts. #whatisschool#createedu

A1: We all have a need to tell our stories. We are storytellers at heart. It gives us meaning and it grounds us in our community. Our stories help know we belong.#whatisschool
In my US History class kids love talking about the interconnectedness of history ... then their mind is blown when we find how understanding history helps understand current events ... and how current events are rooted in historical events. #whatisschool
#whatisschool Acceptance is a virtue, often with open expression, putting third person into first person context helps with shared understanding.
You've played Chinese Whispers, let's make it PC and rename it Scotty Whispers, or whatever name you want to call it. Fast fresh fun.

Q4) How can classrooms use visual stories (graphics, video, webpages) to express ideas and encourage shared understandings of perspective? #whatisschool#createedu
A1: Because everyone has a story. When anyone feels valued enough to share their story, their relationship and trust with others deepens. They will be more open to taking risks and letting their uniqueness shine. This applies to everyone, not only students. #whatisschool
I think that's a dangerous statement. Curriculum is equally important. We don't want children growing up not knowing content, not being able to solve problems and further their knowledge. I think we have to be very careful with this. #whatisschool
A2: I feel that sharing experiences help us create a common community. We know that we belong to something bigger than us. Stories help us connect with the bigger world. Stories are the way we transmit our understanding of the world.#whatisschool
This is partially why we choose to build the trust and practice personal story sharing through classroom meetings. Face to face conversations, learning to read body language, listen for expressions, etc. So much gets lost in text only communication. #whatisschool#createedu

it is important - my point is that we have to meet kids where they are and use the content to develop their skills and habits of mind - it's not a one size fits all for kids; they are at their own stage - we use the curriculum but the focus should be on the child. #whatisschool
A4: Opportunities to story tell and convey information creatively thru posters, video, webpages, eBooks, etc. allows students to become teachers themselves, thinking of story and how to package it to get others interested and learn from their knowledge. #whatisschool#createedu
Interesting. My experience is that they have the potential 2B the most ego-centric generation, but some R wise beyond their years because of their access to info & the way they process that info. Others have generated change in incredible ways! #whatisschool#createedu

A3: I teach elementary and I am always surprised by the “deeper” topics they are already aware of & asking Qs about: WW2, life in space, etc. They are much deeper thinkers than we think they are. #whatisschool
I do personally, yes, to share travel photos and food. I do find I post far and few between and keep personal struggles off the platform. So, looking at Instagram you would not get the best perception of my life completely. #whatisschool#createedu

Totally agree with you here Sara. Stories are so powerful. They allow us to peer into the lives of those we otherwise wouldn't have any experience with. As @KellyGToGo says, they allow for "imaginative rehearsals." #whatisschool#CreateEDU
A4: By using these visuals, I believe we appeal to what is relevant for our Ss. They have grown up with tech, so use of this kind of tech is speaking their language. They connect to that. They connect to one another. #whatisschool
A4: put up visuals/videos and do a "See Think Wonder" with Ss. I'd also place an artifact on Ss desk & do same protocol. Great discussions! #whatisschool
It is definitely our job as educators to teach #empathy in a world where suffering can go viral and as you said, mistakes can last a lifetime! I think teachers have a great opportunity to model effective and positive use of social media! #whatisschool#createedu

Genres are a powerful way for Ss to learn elements of rhetoric—audience, text, purpose. Any genre can make an argument; when Ss create their own genres, they engage in the content and become creators of their own content. #whatisschool

A4. Some Ss feel they are unique in their situation & alone, while some feel 'normal' when their situation is unique. Stories can create a wider understanding of our world & how to deal with our situations learning from the experience of others. #whatisschool#createedu
A4: great question! Can't wait to hear others ideas. We have quite a few restrictions, so I share things we're doing with it the social media person & it's gets posted (mainly photos) I wish we'd go deeper though and get into discussions though.#whatisschool
Q4) How can classrooms use visual stories (graphics, video, webpages) to express ideas and encourage shared understandings of perspective? #whatisschool#createedu
3A-Create student Voice and Agency in their work by students sharing their personal travel photos, fashion, social justice, understanding of culture and the cultures of others, history and portraits. What else? Create the mood/ show empathy, Go Deeper. Tell a story #whatisschool
A3: Ss love to be part of what's trending now but can quickly turn to the next trendy thing. If it doesn't connect to their world outside of school they aren't interested. The challenge is teaching how to be a leader, not just a follower. #whatisschool
A2. The more we are exposed to ideas other than our own, the more we realize that there are many different perspectives among us but also many things that tie us together. This helps us celebrate our differences and similarities. #whatisschool
A5)Tools : can be digital or non digita. I am big fan of Adobe mobile apps (spark, comp, capture ,sketch, draw, PS express, Photoshop mix, clip),explain everything, puppetpals, Visme, pikotochart, iMovie, Canva , Adobe Creative suite ,ibooksauthor

A5: @StoryboardThat is pretty good. Whatever digital tool Ss use, I always want a written script. I feel like the writing is so important and we sometimes undersell the complexity of it. #whatisschool#CreateEDU
#WhatIsSchool A4. if the tech tools are used wisely and in moderation, it's fine.we would need to get all stake holders to be on the same page...be convinced of the effective use of social media for furthering the learning process.
From research to final product, about 2-3 weeks. I assisted our history teacher in talking through the final product and helping students with BookCreator. :) #whatisschool#createedu
#WhatIsSchool a4b.
On ground picture is ...not all teachers are convinced or equipped, parents are not aware and students generally take the tasks and the media lightly.
An awareness ,and an education therefore needs to be build around it .
A5: Next week our students will be completing service projects for the week. Their reflection consists of: contributing to a collaborative word cloud, @Flipgrid daily reflection, then either poster in @canva, @BookCreatorApp book or iMovie video. #whatisschool#createedu
A5 My own kids when they were younger used stickbots to make stop gap animation clips - a great tool for story creation and sharing #whatisschool#createedu
A5) projects : infographics, scrapbooks, animation videos , photography, art journaling, sketchnotes. All these can be made with or without digital tools
#whatisschool#createedu
Yep, I have used @mentimeter but in limited capacity. I was going to try it again next week. Will have to explore PosterMyWall, but right now loyalty lies with @canva! :) #whatisschool#createedu

A5: They include viz Adobe Spark, Photoshop, ZooBurst, StoryBird, UtellStory and Piclits. They are amazing tools for digital storytelling in education. #whatisschool#CreateEdu.
I think I used to be on it :) Maybe I need to sign up again! Poor guy who has my old phone number is probably getting reminded quite a bit :) #whatisschool
A5 I came in at right time, Craig. Yesterday during PD, I shared tools (@waterlogue@picmonkey@WordSwagApp) 4 #digital storytelling

Unfortunately the family is calling me to dinner. Sorry I can't stay longer. Offering an invitation to share digital art, etc at my winter gallery https://t.co/i6V9VK8okS. #whatisschool
5A. Currently in ES I am using @seesaw to write and build understanding about their Art work. This gives my students a digital place to write - a caption Title, a story about their work and finally Reflect on their Art work. #whatisschool
Our entire elementary school started using @seesaw this year. I don't have a lot of visibility into it but I hear it has been really well-received by students, teachers and parents! #whatisschool#createedu
A6 storybird is another platform for having Ss create and share their stories. The can create pictures and share their stories. I haven't used this platform but have seen it used by younger students. #whatisschool#createedu

As human beings, our greatness lies not so much in being able to remake the world – that is the myth of the atomic age – as in being able to remake ourselves.” Ghandi. #WhatIsSchool#CreateEDU#DesignThinking#openyoureyes

A3: Most of my Ss are interested in technology, medicine, law, debate, sports, creative writing, & STEM. What they don't always seem to realize is that they become interested in anything that they see as relevant! Growing them through relevance is always best! #whatisschool
