Welcome to another exciting #GAHSFBCHAT "Coaches Meeting". Let's not waste anytime.
Who's in the house tonight? Name, School, State & title.
Also adding a twist to intros tonight: Tag a coach that you feel your coaching colleagues should be following.
#GAHSFBCHAT
We will use our normal Q1:A1 format. Be sure to use the tag #GAHSFBCHAT in each of your post for better visibility by your coaching cohorts.
Also make sure that you take a few seconds & follow each coach & expand your coaching network!
A1: Effort, Selflessness, Hard work. Trying to build boys into young men. They will be better when they graduate from our program Athletically, Academically, Socially and Emotionally. #GAHSFBCHAT
Vision : To Leave A Legacy Mission: To create STRONG men! Strong spiritually, physically, mentally and academically
#BringTheHammer#NewtonBoyz#GAHSFBCHAT
A1: as a coordinator trying to get the defense to play fast/aggressive. What the HC has as a goal for the program, thatâs what I have to keep reminding the kids about. #gahsfbchat
A1: for our program itâs burning the boats. Itâs about not resting or being focused on whatâs happened in the past but working EVERY day for what we want. #GAHSFBCHAT
A1) We have a different motto every year but the foundation of our program is based on a motto we carry in every season: LMMY = Less Me, More You #GAHSFBCHAT
Q1 Trust, Loyalty, Pride, Effort, The biggest thing we have to do is gain trust from our players and show them that we care about them "more" then just on the field! #GAHSFBCHAT
A2: its a new focus on physicality this season. Going to use a number of new drills. I also created a DB Manual that each player will get that covers our core beliefs and what we want to be about! #GAHSFBCHAT
A2: for me seeing what doesnât work and what does. I also rely on my mentors, many times they have gone through a situation, may not be able to give you the right answer, but can put you in the right direction. #gahsfbchat
A2) Our core beliefs were built on a tradition thatâs been around long since before I was fortunate enough to join so I canât really speak on that. All I can say is I hope to help to continue that great tradition. #GAHSFBCHAT
A1) Fairness. Our kids are different and are not equal, but all players are treated the way we would want some one to treat us. They get chances to show us what they can do, and that helps them respond well. #GAHSFBCHAT
A2: Personally, I've tried to develop ideas by reading about what other coaches & programs are doing. That usually sparks some type of motivation.
#GAHSFBCHAT
A1 - very much a pete carroll style... "do things better than they gave ever been done before", "working to maximize your potential", "if you want to win forever, always compete" #gahsfbchat
A2: Had to determine WHY for my kids and for me and my staff! We want to LEAVE a LEGACY! Protect the N! What are we trying to do, create STRONG Men! By #bringThehammer - Discipline, Commitment, Toughness, Effort & Pride get u there #gahsfbchat
A2: Honestly it was really a matter of just simply deprogramming our players from all the bad habits & lack of commitment & using our personal experiences as coaches to shed light on what needs to be done!
They hadnât had coaches who really connect with them so..
#GHSFBCHAT

Q2 We are using the ones that our New HC has brought with him, but will use a few that have learned over the years for my Q's to live by. If we are going to be leaders of our team we must learned to be looked at different. #GAHSFBCHAT
A2 Be more involved in our players lives. If I donât live the standard myself, I canât expect the players to do the same. Get involved! #GAHSFBCHAT
A3) through practice. It is something that has to be expressed and demonstrated at times before it is adopted by players, teachers and family members #GAHSFBCHAT
A3: All we talk about, we are working now on common language . But for example our current OFF-Season theme is #PayTheFee we are all wearing wristbands, not just staff and players. Principal, AD, Instructional Coaches, Counselors. Leaders create Culture! #gahsfbchat
A2 practice what you preach, this involved bringing in new coaches who believed in those beliefs and training and teaching our coaches, before we ever brought this system to the players... its all about being the best you #gahsfbchat
A3: In Practice. Itâs all about getting them to go full speed and not be afraid to give up the body to make the play or prevent a play from ever even developing #GAHSFBCHAT
A1: I think one thing Iâm going to do with my position group is have the kids vote on a word that they want us to focus on as a group that is applicable. I think there is power in ownership! #GAHSFBCHAT
A3) I think you have to live it. We as coaches must demonstrate what âLess me, more youâ looks like to our kids by being willing to put others first & put ego to the side for the betterment of our program and our kids. Iâm lucky to be able to learn from a great staff #GAHSFBCHAT
A3: We use the kids to promote the core beliefs! To me they are the best advertising strategy! We have had a wave of commitment this offseason and the kids are starting to exude the qualities weâve been looking for and in return parents notice, admins notice, etc!
#GAHSFBCHAT
A2 practice what you preach, this involved bringing in new coaches who believed in those beliefs and training and teaching our coaches, before we ever brought this system to the players... its all about being the best you #gahsfbchat
A2 We have culture meetings every Wednesday morning in the weight room. Our HC talks culture and has a coach speak each week on one aspect of the wolverine way. We also are listening to Chop Wood, Carry Water #GAHSFBCHAT
A3: All we talk about, we are working now on common language . But for example our current OFF-Season theme is #PayTheFee we are all wearing wristbands, not just staff and players. Principal, AD, Instructional Coaches, Counselors. Leaders create Culture! #gahsfbchat
Team dinners are integral. Invite EVERYONE. Talk about beliefs and how theyâve shaped everything the program does. Never done but maybe put on T-shirtâs and hand out/sell. #GAHSFBCHAT
A3, there are visual cues and clues everywhere in the facility, as well as being seen in the behaviour of our entire program - "great effort, great enthusiasm, great toughness, be smart" #gahsfbchat
Hope & Belief are two of the most powerful things in the world. Do everything you can to strengthen yours while never crushing someone elseâs!
Also... #TPW#GAHSFBCHAT
A3: with your attitude and support to the entire program. You should show what your selling is the best way to put it. Be true to you and to all those around you and they will follow, therefore showing your core beliefs. #gahsfbchat
Q3 All of the above, but it will show in the way we do things on and off the field. It starts with coaches and will work it's way down. Once we set that our community will be more involved. #GAHSFBCHAT
A3: youâve got to live it. It canât just be something you mention once or a sign in the locker room. It has to be a key part of your program every day. #GAHSFBCHAT
Talk to your kids. More importantly, listen to them. How can we expect our players to be leaders if we never give them a voice. How can we expect our players to be mature, if we donât give them opportunities to grow.
#GAHSFBCHAT
I believe practice time is where u reinforce your culture through ACTION and effort. Outside of practice is where u educate and elaborate on your culture through less physical means. #GAHSFBCHAT
As a coordinator, I try to make sure and incorporate these things into everything that I can. I had each of my kids select one word, following John Gordonâs principal. We begin each meeting with different kids sharing their word and itâs meaning with their teammates.
#GAHSFBCHAT
A4: for my DBs this season. Not going 100% on each play is going to be a huge issue. Go 100% for each rep in practice, or pay the price. If you donât go all the way Monday thru Thursday, I canât trust you to do so on Friday night #GAHSFBCHAT
Very important that "Non-Negotionables" are established and more importantly....ENFORCED!
Keep those ideas flowing coaches.
Q5 is up in 2 minutes!
#GAHSFBCHAT#Culture4Coaches
A4 keep it simple. 4 team rules that have to be followed: 1)Always protect the team 2)No whining no complaining no excuses 3)Be early 4)Communicate. The central theme: always compete. youre either competing or youre not in a relentless pursuit of a competitive edge #gahsfbchat
A4: 100% effort and attitude are always things that we preach. I would like to develop a few "More Tangible" non-negotionables that yield more concrete results that can be shared with the kids.
#GAHSFBCHAT
A4: This offseason as the S&C Coach also, I made it a #PayYourDues type of offseason. Not only is missing workouts not accepted but players are the ones holding each other accountable so itâs taking what weâve instilled & taking it the Player-Led Accountability piece
#GAHSFBCHAT
A5: Buy in was mentioned earlier. I think this may be the most crucial part of establishing culture. And most of the time, it's not the kids who have trouble buying in. Tough to get EVERYONE ELSE to buy in completely.
#GAHSFBCHAT
A5) Younger kids or maybe kids who are new to our program might not truly understand what it means to put the TEAM first or how important it is to protect our legacy #GAHSFBCHAT
Ego! Too many coaches think they are âspecial.â Too many kids think they have arrived. Too many parents think they know better. All a byproduct of ego! We have to be in it together.
#GAHSFBCHAT
A5: Outside noise. We control the message inside our program. Leaders make sure it stays intact when they leave. Kids are bombarded with negativity, 'me-first' mentality, and D1 bound pressure. Great cultures drown out the noise. #GAHSFBCHAT
Q5 We have to weed out the cancers, 1 kid can take down the whole group. Once you do that then kids start to buy into our beliefs and values! I have been a part of 3 schools that we have rebuilt and it's one of the best feelings when that light bulb starts to flicker #GAHSFBCHAT
A5: Kids adapt once you are firm & parents do as well. U have 2 UNDERSTAND unless you are in a small town you may LOSE kids. That's ok! Also every HC needs a principal and AD that can see the vision! Better be able to sell them, sometimes they change, u have 2 resell #gahsfbchat
A5 the biggest push back you will get is when the coaches don't walk the walk, they need to lead, and that means earning peoples' trust, then making a very clear standard, and equipping and inspiring people to live up to it #gahsfbchat

A5: we have a few kids that are athletically gifted, and who think they donât have to work as hard as everyone else in order to succeed. We have less gifted kids that give it all. We need that effort from everyone #GAHSFBCHAT
For a lot of coaches the core values we try to teach them about are not promoted as much, if at all in their homes. Sometimes kids hear something polar opposite core value wise from their parents that we emulate as coaches. They are taught me over WE. #GAHSFBCHAT#Culture4Coaches
A5: I would say getting the buy-in of the players. Theyâve had coaches do some things you wouldnât believe so getting them understand that had their best interest at heart was the biggest hurdle!
#GAHSFBCHAT
My good friend @NolandTravis@OCFearTheSpear has always done things the right way, I'm always using culture and leadership things he showed me years ago! Great man and leader! #GAHSFBCHAT
#GAHSFBCHAT I'm a big fan of how Paul Chryst handles his program at Wisconsin. In our conference, a Coach named Jeff Spiwak just stepped down at Clinton. D5 team playing D3 teams and has won conference last two years. Takes all my lunch money
A6: Thereâs so many examples out there! I would love to name them all but itâs such a long list. Any program with success has bits and pieces that every coach can pull from. There are things to be luearn d from every coach in this chat! #GAHSFBCHAT
A5 I think the kids have done a great job buying in to the culture. But I can buy in to a poker game, now is the time for next level culture. Can we get the guys to hold themselves AND each other accountable? I think that part has been the most difficult. #GAHSFBCHAT
A6: Huge fan of what Urban Meyer is doing, since reading his book. Also quite a few local HS programs doing a lot of good stuff, who I am monitoring consistently and picking their brains.
#GAHSFBCHAT
A6: Gotta love North Dakota State. Toughness, well coached, brotherhood. So many great coaches in this state to keep up with. The change @CNix86 is in the middle of at GC is special. #GAHSFBCHAT
Q7: Do you have a quote (or quotes) that summarizes your approach to establishing culture within your program? (Be sure to cite your sources - no plagiarism - lol)
#GAHSFBCHAT#Culture4Coaches
A6) After reading Urban Meyerâs book Above The Line I came to appreciate the culture that heâs built and the 9 units strong and Focus 3 principles that go along with it #GAHSFBCHAT
Too many to name! Twitter doesnât give me enough characters...
But I respect any man that has dedicated his life to using this game to help boys become men. So many coaches do it for the right reason(s). I salute them all. #GAHSFBCHAT
A6 Dabo is a culture guy that I look up to. I think he lives it, and you see that in his players and coaches, and he doesnât change it for an interview. He lives the standard. #GAHSFBCHAT
A6: Iâm a Urban Meyer guy...I hold my position group to very high standards and expectations...Iâve also pulled some stuff from previous HCâs Iâve coached with... #GAHSFBCHAT
Leaders establish Culture, Culture creates Behavior, Behavior produces results ---> @TBrianKight. This guy and his pops @TimothyKight are pretty much at the beginning & the end of my mindset. NO BCD for Lent #gahsfbchat
Q7: Do you have a quote (or quotes) that summarizes your approach to establishing culture within your program? (Be sure to cite your sources - no plagiarism - lol)
#GAHSFBCHAT#Culture4Coaches
A7) âA culture of greatness doesnât happen by accident. It happens when a leader expects greatness and each person in the organization builds it, lives it, values it, reinforces it and fights for it.â @JonGordon11#GAHSFBCHAT
âThe process is more important than the product!â - Inky Johnson @InkyJohnson
Simple words that carry so much weight and players understand the meaning too!
#GAHSFBCHAT

Q7: Do you have a quote (or quotes) that summarizes your approach to establishing culture within your program? (Be sure to cite your sources - no plagiarism - lol)
#GAHSFBCHAT#Culture4Coaches
A8: KEEP GOING! You wonât get where you want to be by giving up or giving in. Have to keep fighting for what you believe in and for your vision to become a reality #GAHSFBCHAT
A8: Stay the course. It may be tough but things will break and your culture will take over. Find out why the troublemakers wonât get on the bus! The worst thing you can do is give up or allow the energy vampires to win. #GAHSFBCHAT
A8) Stay with what you believe are your beliefs no matter what. Surround yourself w/people in your program who buy-in to these beliefs. Donât just preach them but live it out each and every day! Speak the truth, but speak the truth in love! Others will soon follow! #GAHSFBCHAT
A8: You can impact the culture of ur team even when you are not the leader. How you ask? Make your 20 by 20 foot box the best part of a child's day & they will show you up just for you. Imagine if they had all the coaches like that! The culture would change fast! #gahsfbchat
