#UrbanEd chat is a twitter chat for educators. Topics relevant to the subject of urban education will be discussed, but all educators are encouraged to join the conversation. The chats will be moderated by Ben and Neil, founders of Engaging Educators and elementary school teachers in Detroit, MI.
A1: SEL is taking into account that the emotions that a Ss is experiencing affects their ability to learn and retain information. Not just Ss, but anyone if you think about it. #UrbanEdChat
#UrbanEdChat A1 SEL is learning & understanding how to manage emoition & setting goals while in a classroom setting while learning other ss or even ts emotions. It's important today because ts have to balance learn & adjust to ss & ts emotions while still being productive
#UrbanEdChat A2 not sure about this question because as educators we all talk about it in the beginning of the year but I feel like that is the only time we reflect on it. How done as educators make sure the SEL is maintained and followed throughout the year?
I feel that we have to stay on top it all year round. That means staying in tune with what is going on with Ss and the vibe in the classroom #urbanedchat
#UrbanEdChat#A1 Social Emotional Learning helps effectively apply the necessary skills to help students achieve their goals, by helping them stay positive, maintain and establish solid relationships & keeping their emotions it tact.
IMO you have to make it a priority and be intentional. Sometimes I think we (educators) feel we have to do all things we view as touchy-feely things on week one, so we can get to the real teaching, not realizing that this is the real teaching. #UrbanEdChat#SEL
#UrbanEdChat A3 it helps us all feel confident in the ss learning process. We all know ss learn differently but emotions do change throughout the year. when we acknowledge ss emotions that can and may affect their learning ss can respond positively & work towards being successful
A4: It's tough for a Ts because you have how many Ss and everyone is experiencing a myriad of different feelings and emotions at any given time. #UrbanEdChat
#UrbanEdChat A4 I'm with @DayCatherineM its hard because you are managing so many ss emoitions including your own. TIME is also a key factor, sometimes I think people above Ts need to look at their staff EL while we manage SEL.
#UrbanEdChat A2 & A3. When SEL is used correctly in any academic classroom it can increase grades and behavior across the board. All 5 core competencies go hand in hand. #ARTROCKS
A5: First, Ts and Ss must have those great relationships with each other. SEL also helps Ss learn how to handle positive and negative emotions and especially impulses. #urbanedchat

A6. Without paying attention to what the Ss are dealing with and feeling atm, these programs will not https://t.co/lEbR9c4utu have to take care of the person before you try to teach anything. #UrbanEdChat
A1: SEL teaching- Some teachers haven't shifted to teaching the WHOLE child and feel that their only job is to teach content instead of kids #UrbanEdChat
#UrbanEdChat A5. We are heading into the 2018-2019 school year. If SEL is implemented correctly in the 1st week it can dismantle a lot of the conflict throughout the year, helping increase scores and increasing better behavior.
Can't throw academics at an emotional issue. If it's some other issue, academics is the last thing Ss are concerned about. Now, if they are distressed because of academics, then those programs are good to go #urbanedchat
A2: These SEL skills are essential to teach so that our students can advocate for themselves and others. We cannot expect them to succeed academically without SEL support. So many students do not receive this at home or are in unfamiliar environments #urbanedchat
A5: Most students do not go from 0 to 100. As my students are coming in the door, I am doing a check on them. If they do not look okay, I ask, ”Are you okay?” If they are not happy on my room before I send them off to their next class, I talk to them.I let them #UrbanEdChat
know it okay to be angry, but do not take it out on the next teacher. I also scan the hallway between classes. Most (not all) of the time you cam see when a S is unhappy. Sometimes they get in argument with their parents and lash out at the T. #UrbanEdChat

#4 the problem for some teachers is that think teaching these skills os separate from thier subject matter. By creating a small moments each day can make a difference.
Great idea! Better not to pass off the issue! Plus it show the Ss that you truly do care about THEM as a person, which is one of the biggest complaints of Ss #urbanedchat
Self awareness and relationship skills will help students as well as teachers to deescalate situations. Teachers who teach these skills can help students become aware of their own actions and feeling.
A5: Teaching is all about the 3 Rs: Relationships, Relationships, Relationships. Once we see each other as partners, we work together toward an understanding, providing techniques for Ss to self-regulate- something that has to be taught #UrbanEdChat

A6: When schools do this, we treat our Ss as knowledge receptacles, not human learners. Where is the engagement and differentiation for SEL skills? We can't just plug and play. Ts have to consider culturally relevant practices. #UrbanEdChat
A6: IMO cookie-cutter approaches do not build in time for changes in Ss and Ts. At the middle school level, they change from minute to minute. #UrbanEdChat
I agree! I argue this point all of the time at work about workstations. How do you put Ss who have social deficits in a group to do work independently? It's like an train wreck waiting to happen! #UrbanEdChat
#UrbanEdChat A6. I hate a cookie cutter classroom. It is not productive. I have found that the the most successful classroom, have their own flow. A classroom is like a work of art. Each teacher has their own teaching style a strategies that work. Interjecting SEL strategies HELP

SO true. We have to empathize, as an adult who loves school and grew up loving school, I would HATE those learning environments and struggle in them. How can we ask that of our Ss with deficits? #UrbanEdChat
