A3: I learned so much more about my Ss by seeing the things they created and shared.
A3: Give students opportunity to choose their medium to show what they know.
Q4 coming up in 1 minute…
That has to be embraced by Ts and not discouraged.
I was playing around with compiling ChromeOS awhile back. Check out Neverware
Yes! The kinesthetic learner. The auditory learner. The edtech learner!
a good tech integrator sees the direction the kid is going and helps them take it even further ... redefine possible
Good idea. I think we're going to start with Win 7 as this is the OS on school computers. Then explore Linus & Pi
LOVE! Which school?? I would love to see this as the norm.
A3: when Ss show what they know it alleviates boredom for all of them.
Q4: How do you balance incorporating and options for students to creatively “show what they know”?
ready to sign up at least 3 - need to tell the teachers I am doign it first :)
A4: Let them use either/both!
A3: I want Ss to show what they know w their choice of tool https://t.co/pfdgPBLcKy
Q3: How does allowing students to show to “show what they know” with allow for ease of differentiation?
A4: I think someone has already said it.. They are just tools. Let the students select the desired tools!
"create opportunity"! Putting it on a t-shirt.
The book, the movie, or something else?
A4: You have to provide student-choice in the avenue they take to show mastery of standards. Doesn't matter if it's tech or not
A3 In the elementary classroom is an amazing tool for Ss to show what they know, with added key of parent engagement!
A4: The concept and the learning is more important than the tool!
Amen!!!!! Bridgewater College! It can be difficult though for candidates to know about every tech tool
A4: I use a blend of old/new tools. Hands-on manipulatives in math paired with a document camera. Have Ss take pix & video!
A3: Book Creator, iMovie, Doceri, Chatterbox and Pic Collage are some apps my students prefer to show what they know.
, not neverwhere. My bad.
Nice! Thoughtful and timely addition to teacher training.
A4 varied options and Ss choice. They will choose something they feel successful at doing. Build on that.
Very true, but exposing them to the world of tech tools is a plus!
A4 I let the individual S drive the choice of how to show what they know, let them use what they are comfortable with
Q4.1 do we need to teach them/ enable them to experience both and edtech?
A4: Model by showing them how they relate or can work together. They can enhance each other if done right.
A4: I offer both as options to show what they know on the assignment.
A4 Can't contribute here but...Ooooooo...good question
Yes, Seesaw has been a powerhouse with K-6 More popular to use than QR Codes
A3: Engagement spikes when Ss can choose
I would love to test it too. I used to build Linux thin clients, but this now…
learning with is not about setting boundaries; it is about breaking them down
Tech is just the tool, allow students to share what they know using a medium that works for them https://t.co/IU3VZHSPvW
Q4: How do you balance incorporating and options for students to creatively “show what they know”?
This is so important for districts with limited tech to hear! https://t.co/ORs0annfrF
A4: The concept and the learning is more important than the tool!
Every time I turn around I hear about
On podcasts, twitter chats, presidential candidate commercials...
A4: allowing total student choice w/ constraints (e.g. must be accessible for non-readers, so a print poster w/QR code audio...)
that and collaborative learning so peers can fill gaps of one another. done so well w "Houston we have a problem"
A4 There are some skills I want all Ss to have, but most of time I leave it up to them,
A4: it's pretty easy when your is limited. 😜 I love giving choices for projects.
If we teach skills - logical thinking - not tools - programming - we would be better off
A4: There are many steps to a balance, but theres nothing wrong w/ challenging Ss to use a tool they wouldnt typically choose
A4 Student choice is important, but not to the point where you sacrifice the intended learning outcomes
Could be used by alot of schools, especially ones that get cheap/free refurbs.
A4 differentiation, give students choice in how they show what they know.
trying it this year! Can't wait
- You bet! It's about getting them started and realizing the power
A4: Why not ask them to show their knowledge both ways - or simulate a projector failure in the middle and see what happens
Have you tried ? I really don't think anything comes close to it's possibilities.
I totally agree - I think it's best to teach the skills through the tech :)
A4.1: We need to encourage experience in both. Don’t want Ss too much to one side and not getting exposure to the other side.
Q4: Absolutely. I want, we want, teams flush with practitioners whose talents flow through any bundle of resources
Compose the piece well and they'll never know they don't have choices.
Love this create failure to get them to problem https://t.co/b7987hBrXo
A4: Why not ask them to show their knowledge both ways - or simulate a projector failure in the middle and see what happens
Computational thinking works for me.
danieldowns: RT edtech_update: How You Can Support The New Kid In Your Class By teachthought https://t.co/Dlf1ZSMkka
A4: A culture of appreciation for nontech solutions and edtech solutions is critical to the balance of a classroom.
True, but if creativity and innovation are to be considered, we must leave some wiggle room. Such a fine line
A3: Each S can provide evidence in the medium and style with which they are most comfortable. Lots of options for extension.
This!!! https://t.co/ehrZBiokLw
A4: A culture of appreciation for nontech solutions and edtech solutions is critical to the balance of a classroom.
A4 Build the capacity of our students to use the correct tools when needed and not just default to
Immigration app by NYC DOE, Scratch JR, an avatar creator, + one more
Q5 coming up in 1 minute…
Exposure is the key! It's all about the journey
A4: Yes. Tech is not always the best solution. Ss to know how to pick the right tool for the job https://t.co/oRg0IpQVGN
Q4.1 do we need to teach them/ enable them to experience both and edtech?
Q5: How do you encourage students to try new and different and options outside their comfort zone?
I am not sure I like the term - makes it too much like an instruction sheet
Back to that engineering model. "and the grid goes down no power ..."
You need to 3D print big stencils so you can mark the last known location of Pikachu!
Loving all these "lowtech" ideas!
Quality vs quantity every time! https://t.co/jju2OphqG3
A4 Build the capacity of our students to use the correct tools when needed and not just default to
A4: Have some of each, allow for either on S work. Analog activities are part of the process in science! https://t.co/tJuslwRZ2d
Love! "Culture of appreciation" 👍🏼 description because particular skills come with vs https://t.co/bTinp0dCqO
A4: A culture of appreciation for nontech solutions and edtech solutions is critical to the balance of a classroom.
A4.1 both because the design process starts not tech and moves into tech
I think it's more about exposure & reshaping the learning experience so they don't teach like they were taught
and it's not coming back anytime soon - how do we keep going?
Hmm hadn't thought about it that way.
A5: Require Ss to try something new from list of choices. Have Ss who have used that 1 be the 'go to' if Ss have Qs. collaborate
A5 model by doing it yourself. Showcasing Ss mentors who are willing to try and fail.
A5: Try it with them! Lateral learning speaks volumes!
I get the term and its origin, but I think computational implies formulaic
A1) If they can show what's in their minds with analog tools, digital tools can enhance it all.
A5 time to play with ideas/ materials is so important for sts (and ts!) confidence!
Oh, Give them room to be creative and innovate. But when we're exploring space they shouldn't hit the ocean floor.
A5: Model the use of low and no tech solutions for Ss. These types of solutions can be less scary to try!
A5: Collaboration! Ss fine confidence in one another especially when you the fear of failure factor is gone!
Q5: By exposing them to new ideas, allow for creativity, and ensuring that they know it's okay to fail!
A5 we are partners in any challenge. Working together builds confidence
A5: after teach many methods to "show what they know" Ss get choices that eliminate ways they are most comfortable with
A4: I have confused many Ss by starting w tech instead of no tech
Well said. just did an interesting piece on S choice just scrolled up in twitter
A5: Sometime it requires just showing it to them. Others need a little direction. https://t.co/9qxX4HkZls
Q5: How do you encourage students to try new and different and options outside their comfort zone?
A5: Try new with them! Tell them "We're all going to learn this one." My experiences have shown that they enjoy that
Ah. I hadn't thought about it that way. Couldn't logical have same result?
A5: I allow time for exploration through short rotating centers. Not long but enough time to spark curiosity and intrigue.
A2) Creativity is the backbone of innovation in or . Prototype and fail often... Then learn and move on
A4: kids thrive when I enable. Have them explore then allow them to create. Channeling leads to less creativity.
A5 Assess the process and sts mindset as much as the product
a5: exposure to many tools, focus on the outcome, and keep asking "why did you choose that method? Is there another way?
A5 i offer many options and provide safe space to try anything with lots of support. https://t.co/dipg7AfHVn
Q5: How do you encourage students to try new and different and options outside their comfort zone?
To me logical implies a process, computational a formula - but that's me
A5: I say things like, "Have you met ?" Then I offer time and space for Ss to really try them out for course work.
Not a bad idea for PD for Ts either. Get those lagging behind started w/ something where they can succeed.
A5: ETA Exposure-Time-Access for students
So perfect https://t.co/KEnCP40OqA
A5 i offer many options and provide safe space to try anything with lots of support. https://t.co/dipg7AfHVn
Q5: How do you encourage students to try new and different and options outside their comfort zone?
Q5- Exposure and not setting to rigid of guidelines to allow for collaboration and exploration
A5: MODEL & provide challenge with CHOICE! Ss will take risks if you create the environment!
A3) When a student "shows what they know" the teacher should have an understanding of the S's current level and where to coach
A5 Sometimes i create w/ show, have othr Ss share exper,I learn w/ & from them
A5: by presenting them with new and different options that they may have not seen before.
this is all really life skills - we just don't think that way sometimes
A5b) I say, "Choose two body systems and build a physical model showing their interaction." https://t.co/V190jRPzrt
or am I just being obtuse?
A5 - Comfort zone? do kids really have a comfort zone? ... tossing out those tech ideas all the time ... what works sticks
I want to teach at your school.
Bowing out to take daughter to dance. Thanks for some great ideas!
I shy away from the word fail. Learning what you don't know is success. Taking a step forward is success.
Love these great answers - leading me to think I can create safe maker space for Ts to explore new tech tools
A5: When Ss can choose, and work is showcased, they might want to try something that a classmate used https://t.co/4jzsVer6W9
Q5: How do you encourage students to try new and different and options outside their comfort zone?
A5) Teachers can encourage students to be outside their comfort zone by modeling the same.
the kids only have a comfort zone if they see us in a comfort zone ... have to model that risk taking attitude
A5 Choices are a reflection of culture. Students that trust the process and understand failure isn't the end will take risks
A5- being careful to model but not too much that students think there is only one way
Great idea. Start with successes and build toward more complex tech solutions. https://t.co/pBX6eyMr2p
Not a bad idea for PD for Ts either. Get those lagging behind started w/ something where they can succeed.
A5: I think the learning/curiosity builds on itself w
Oh yes, they do. Not all of them are "digital natives" More of them are than we are, but not all.
Thanks. Suggesting a tool without the time and space to try it is like not suggesting a tool IMHO.
That's awesome. The less we scaffold it, the less the projects look alike & the more the Ss use creativity.
A5: Encourage students to share their rationale for choosing a particular medium with their peers. Build maker capacity.
Start with the problem. Let them choose the tool and perhaps that one tool is the optimal solution. Choice via task necessity
Yes, they do. Especially in the pool. However, our zone can be much narrower than theirs.
Q6 coming up in 1 minute…
Putting my little one to bed. My head will be spinning with creative and innovative ideas tonight! Thank you!
working on Cornell notes ... can use GoogleDocs, Pages, Word, Paper ... whatever works for the kid, but they have to try all
A5 Build confidence students. Let them show you their talents and then fit curriculum around what they excel in.
Yes, I don't know what I was afraid of for so long. was amazing! rules!
A5: Modeling and time to play with the tools available before the "assignment" Allows st to become comfortable.
Q6: What are some of your favorite creative and tools and/or projcts?
how often do we let our fear be pushed on to the kids?
I appreciate the word fail and embrace failure as a way to grow. If it worked for Michael Jordan I figure why not.
Have any Elementary T's used on their elementary classes? I teach 5th.
what about marbles and silly string?
3 Essential Ingredients for Making Work in the Classroom: Leadership, PD, & Ongoing Support >> https://t.co/qQHXuM6EdZ
A6: Having kids explain the process of their learning, with or without tech!
Most are more comfortable w/ devices, but not for work or education purposes Ss need to learn those skills
A5: Model, model, model. For me, coming up w content is an issue. I will remake a resource w a diff tool to learn it
A6: Obsessed with anything esp the new draw feature on the classroom app! & for !
Start with scaffolding to allow the S to gain familiarity and confidence, but scale it back quickly.
prefer this definition of failure - the act or state of not functioning - this doesn't apply to students
A5: Modeling; time to play with the tools before the "assignment" Allows st to become comfortable and invites risk taking
A6 anything that requires power tools and sawdust ... flashing lights ... loud music ... costumes are nice ...
Ts need this time too. Time to play w/ Ss and see what they can do with tech. Brain time is essential.
A6: I love , , Paper by , , and all the analog tools I was raised on!
A6: I love clay and playdough hair as much as and its all a balance
Exactly. Scaffold as we start the learning process, but remove it when we assess their understanding.
It's trusting the students and relinquishing control. It works but we yield a little control
A6 lots of tools mentioned costumes, face paint, junk box of stuff,
A6: Favorite non-edtech is rolled brown paper - all ages enjoy
A6: I LOVE playdoh w/ primary! We create objects, 3d shapes, architecture, numbers, letters, EVERYTHING! The original 3D printer
I agree, but making sure I am not just going overboard :)
A6: Aurasma, Doceri. Have Ss create tutorials through Doceri or videos and link to auras. Aurasma for quick teacher tutorials
A5: Acknowledge work that is different. Love not seeing the same product plastered down the hall
I am not sure if has an official chat or time. It is a nod to implementing 20% time in the classroom.
CCSS is a framework. Ss can choose a set of standards, state how they'll meet, and then provide evidence.
A6: One was city Ss built from cardboard & then coded road & made persuasive videos for city improvements.
A6: I love clay and playdough just as much as and its all a balance
and the silly string? Just want to know how far you will go
And that my friend is a TALL order for some Ts to relinquish that control. That's a BIG & SCARY change.
GRR is my new favorite lesson planning style.
I was never really in control anyway, I just formalized it! hehehe
A6: use a green screen app to have students retell or make up their own readers theater, they love choosing the setting, acting
let me look through my pictures
Yes, this is the truth. I'm not sure what got me to go ahead with it anyway.
This is why I have my PK Ss code, create iMovies, and more. Just wait till they're in MS ....
It's always the illusion of control, isn't it.
I enjoyed your discussion thread on this one!
Thanks for the great conversation tonight
That is going to be SO RAD! I hope those Ts are ready for it!
you totally win if you have silly string in class pics.
just do it. Sorry Nike I will cut you a check next week
Well.. I missed the second half of but I know I can catch up tomorrow!
A6: Cardboard and duct tape.
Oh yes, it absolutely is. I would much rather the chaos of engagement than the banality of compliance.
I'm planning on introducing to my PK, K and 1st grade Ss this year.
Thanks for a great chat! Check out how Ss can work with a Global Partner to create their own websites https://t.co/MGtMB7fFdL
Thanks for joining this week’s ! Don’t forget to follow your new connections from tonight!
A6 introduced me to this summer. I am planning on using these skills in the classroom this fall.
Thanks for a great chat tonight Join us Wed at 8pm CST for as we return from our summer sabbatical.
Anyone out there in try the drone racing kit? Really want to know if as good as it looks
Thanks for moderating tonight!
Add some wires, puzzle floor, and and you get an interactive floor
I just need the equipment. 0 budget.
that's ok but I challenge you to use silly string.
As always, you folks are amazing! Thank you all for your energy and ideas and dedication. Have an amazing week!
A6: ❤️d NF narrative stories inspired by https://t.co/E9r7BVLArW Ss created on & cardboard/upcycled habitats to go w.
yes, what do you do when the internet goes down or there's no wifi or tech available?
Woah. Do you have any resources for this project? Very, very cool.
Loved it! Leaving feeling inspired- thanks.
A6: For non dig tech inspiration, I love PBS Design Squad spinner. Check items you have, spin and see design challenges.
A6: Love , and Dash and Dot.
Thank you everyone for your awesome Ida's and insight. So inspiring.
Read a book. Tell a story. Research the old fashioned way. Use the iPads.
much better drone for many projects, but these are specifically for FPV racing - basically a new team sport :)
A6: Flash polling, since they have their phones with them! Love getting the pulse of their actions and attitudes, anonymously!
Thank you for the welcome Susan! My reply is not timely.... I was juggling dinner prep and =)
