HELLO!!!! #Ditchbook!
Karly, Tech TOSA & Computer Science teacher from Concord, CA. One of my FAVORITE places to get curated content is from @creativeedtech's listicles! https://t.co/2OJjEZQk11 I also think @b_reamswpa is the bees 🐝 knees with her amazing @wakelet collections.
Hey #ditchbook! Happy to join you for tonight's chat!
Matt. Head textbook ditcher. Indiana.
Favorite place for curated content: gonna throw you a curve ball ... A museum!
Hi, I am Katelyn. I am currently a college student trying to become an elementary teacher. I like using Pinterest if that counts. Still getting familiar with the topic of content curation. #ditchbook
Hey, #ditchbook! Evan Mosier, Technology Integrationist Lead and Language Arts teacher from Davenport, IA here. Enjoying a warm and relaxing evening after receiving news of NO SCHOOL tomorrow for dangerous cold. Let the chatting, commence! @mccartney2grade, @Miss_Lievens u here?
A4 #ditchbook
I always want to provide my Ss the best resources and ways to learn 👨🎓👩🎓.
So I need to make sure and curate and save what works for future uses in my lessons 🤓.
Hey #ditchbook! Gretchen from California. I’m a middle school teacher and Digital Learning Coach for our schools. I’m just learning about Wakelet, and I have used Padlet for a few years now.
A1: Who knows their students better than the teacher? Who knows the needs and capabilities for every individual? When teachers curate their own lessons- they are bringing the ability to make learning authentic for all learners. #ditchbook
A1) Curation happens all the time. You curate primary source docs, articles, videos etc. As a teacher, you have to give your Ss them the resources to help them be successful. #DitchBook
A1 I have a #HyperDocs obsession... you may not know it but it's true 😂 Curating content for the explore section of my lessons is HUGE. I need to find good stuff! #Ditchbook
#DitchBook A1 Lately I’m of the opinion curation should be on par with human senses. It should be something we do just by moving through our day. Curation brings order to chaos. When I think about the things I learned at #CUELApalooza and #IACUE that I didn’t write down.. agh!!
A1 The world is a big place. So is the internet. We can’t just set students loose on a Google search and expect them to find high quality resources. We’re the experts, we can curate those better than Google. #DitchBook
Hello everyone! My name is Cliandonica, I am undergrad student studying to be a Special Education teacher. I don't have a favorite site because, I am new to this. Its nice to meet everyone! #ditchbook
A1 Every day I am hustling to gather all the awesomeness of the internet. I hit overload and then forget everything. Curate and come back! #ditchbook There is a song in there somewhere...
A1-There are so many strategies and resources for edu. Organizing these resources can save time down the road. @wakelet has helped me organize my tool box!
When I meet with ts and they ask me whats best for _. When I have a list of resources I can best support them.
#ditchbook
Hey my friend! When you were on the #gttribe recently, I wondered about what part of Indiana you were from! I'm about 1 hour and 15 minutes from Louisville! #ditchbook
Curation is a crucial skill in today's world. With all the info available at our fingertips, access isn't the issue.
It's organization.
Help students sort info out and be efficient with it.
#ditchbook
A1: Living in the age of information, knowledge and resources are a lot more ubiquitous. Curation is a skill that Ts need to navigate modern education. In fact, I think finding frameworks that help us curate purposefully is a must now a days! #ditchbook
A1: With the millions and trillions of sites and resources available for students, it's important to curate so that only the relevant information is accessible, making for maximum efficiency. #DitchBook
A1: #ditchbook curation shows our understanding of our students needs, our own understanding of content and relevance, and how they need to be intertwined for learning to occur
A1 With all the amazing ideas and resources that connected educators are able access, there is no possible way to manage them without some sort of curation. Although, not gonna lie, I still tend to curate thing in piles all over my workspaces. 😬 #ditchbook
I am college undergraduate, but I do believe that curation is important in order give relevant and quality resources to students. I also believe that educators have tons of resources that can be shared with other colleagues.
#ditchbook
Keeping track of all my finds is near impossible, so I have begun Google Docs with links, set up Google Classrooms, and most recently used Toby. #ditchbook
A1. Hi everyone. It’s Nyree from SoCal and I am getting so many notifications I had to see what’s up. Pulling resources together for Ts helps them gather info quickly. They are able to create lessons and give feedback faster also. #DitchBook@KarlyMoura@SEANJFAHEY
A1: there are so many great tools out there for learners but different tools work best at different jobs & May work better depending on who’s handling them. Would you give power tools to a 6 year old? #ditchbook
A1 #Ditchbook
I always wanted to find and use the best resources to help my students have amazing learning experiences 👨🏻🎓👩🎓
So curating was important to me to save and remember what I did year to year and improve upon. Made my life easier since I Ditched Textbooks.
Curation allows us to begin with the end in mind + create a learning experience for students that's recursive, giving them multiple chances to use what they've learned + practice new skills until they're mastered. If we don't curate, creating that connection is harder. #DitchBook
A2: @wakelet is easily the first one that comes to mind!! @padlet is also another one.
Sadly, @Delicious is no longer, so that cannot be counted...
#DitchBook
A critical aspect of curation is not just teaching Ss where to find info, but how question, analyze and understand perspective of various sources => teaching Ss to find QUALITY information in the digital access age #DitchBook
A2 #ditchbook
These I have been my go to tools: 📂 Google Drive folders
🗒️ Google Keep Notes
But my new favorite is @wakelet. It so easy to use on computer or my phone. #WakeletWave 🌊
A1: After looking up the true definition. This is what I did to get my lessons together. (selecting, organizing, and looking after items in A collection) #ditchbook
Real quick...I ❤️ sqworl as I gather good websites for students. It is a very easy to use bookmarking site. I can do it quickly and as we find things. #DitchBook
A1: Jumping in before I hit the hay.
Curation is important for me as a teacher because w/ a system in place I can reflect and plan forward for new opportunities. #Ditchbook
A2: @Wakelet for collaboration and organizing our findings + sharing.
@GoogleDocs for planning with collaboration in mind.
@Screencastify for curating videos to help struggling learners and challenge learners who already know.
@GoogleSlides#Ditchbook
A1: I'm constantly trying to curate content for different things. Right now for example I'm curating all of the responses I got on great poetry recommendations. I use a lot of hyperlinks in Google Docs. @wakelet seems like it could be promising. #ditchbook
Will Dunn; HS Math; Lawrence, Kansas.
Am I correct that this hashtag is based on the notion that textbooks aren’t really necessary, and we should (or at least can) ditch them?
#ditchbook
A2: using Google slides for choice boards or housing links to tools for different jobs is a simple curation tool that can be easily embedded anywhere #ditchbook
Hello, My name is Josh Torres, I am an aspiring high school history teacher and I don't currently use any software for curation but I'm looking for new ideas and a better understanding of the subject #ditchbook
A2 #DitchBook I used IFTTT to create a Google Sheet that tracked all my tweets and retweets. Then I found @Wakelet and my curation powers increased exponentially!
Did you know that you can create a @wakelet collection with tabs?
It's as easy as 1-2-3!
1. Download the @wakelet@googlechrome extension ⬇️
2. Open all of the tabs you want to curate and share
3. Open a new tab and click "Create collection with tabs"
https://t.co/XU2bBXaLSO
A2 I know @wakelet is awesome. I have used Google Keep to make lists and save sites as well. I have curated using my bookmark tool with folders. #ditchbook
Hello, My name is Josh Torres, I am an aspiring high school history teacher and I don't currently use any software for curation but I'm looking for new ideas and a better understanding of the subject #ditchbook
A2b #ditchbook Really Google drive and chrome bookmark folders are my biggest go to tools - I also like my new Rocketbook for adding written notes to drive
A1: Oh my. I seriously love @wakelet for curation, but it is so much more. However, since we're talking curation, I also curate (hoard really) tabs, so OneTab chrome extension can curate too. Also use https://t.co/n43YlQz9Ya for curating links in organized way for Ss. #DitchBook
It lets you add links to pages you might want to visit later. You can add all of your frequently used websites there too. So you have everything in one place! #ditchbook
A2: hey @SEANJFAHEY and @KarlyMoura ! I’m gonna bounce back to my favorite curation tool for student voice in all parts of the learning cycle (drum roll & cymbal crash) @Flipgrid !
#Ditchbook
A2: #ditchbook Could we consider our standards as a starting point to curate? Sometimes pinpointing a starting line is the first step. #rigor#relevance#engagement
A1) Teachers know the meaningful concepts of their classes and the students meant to develop them. The idea that the same book could suffice every year for every group is passive.
And it isn’t lost on me that “curate” is a verb. It’s an active process; not passive.
#ditchbook
I've really been focusing on getting students to collaborate with me, each other + people all over the world on Twitter to curate as well. It isn't as systematized as I'd like, but I feel like students are building a curator ethos. #DitchBook
For SURE. Can you give me an example of this? Are you speaking about the standards that speak to curation (like research) or curating the standards themselves? #ditchbook
#DitchBook A2 I like #EverNote and #OneNote. Lately though, given the video streaming I do at conferences like #CUE#compile#EdCamp social media sites like #FBLive and #Periscope house a clips I capture. I like sharing links during chats when a topic comes up.
I have finally taught myself to make folders ahead of time...doesn't always work...but it has gotten to be like Alice down the rabbit hole or Inception. Folders, in folders, in folders, in folders, within the Google Drive folder. #ditchbook PS somebody save me from myself!
A3 #ditchbook
Yes. Curation is an organizational skill that is very important. Being organized comes in handy when you have a family, in the workplace, or as a student.
A3: Ss are already curating content. Maybe not our content, but they are curating. My son has playlists on @YouTube for all his stuff, for example. Showing them other ways to curate productively is a great life skill. #DitchBook
A3: I think with anything, students need to be able to filter important information as well. Having the skills necessary to do this not only helps them in school, but is a valuable skill they can carry with them once they've graduated. #DitchBook
A3: For sure! I think it’s important that we teach students to be reflective about how they curate material. Before my Ss do any research we have a discussion about values, cognitive bias, and culture, so they can curate with an open mind #ditchbook
I'm using Flipgrid with my @Skyline_WC peer tutors to make introductions + provide online writing feedback to students at another school in our district. In the process, we're curating a feedback + tutoring repository for future training + reference. #DitchBook
In reply to
@KarlyMoura, @snej80, @SEANJFAHEY, @Flipgrid, @Skyline_WC
A3: Yes! I think in a sense they already are. It’s a great way to organize and I think some Ss are doing this by creating channels and playlists online! #Ditchbook
A3 curation in one sense falls into digital literacy. In another - it’s a journey of exploration - paths of inquiry opening up
A word I love: serendipity
#ditchbook
A3: YES. Without a doubt. Why should we teach students to curate? Because curation is a life skill. Ss should be able to find relevant topics from reputable sources and be able to organize/store that information. #ditchbook
A1: curation is such an important skill-as teachers, we are constant curators-of pedagogy, classroom management strategies, and content area knowledge. Knowing how to organize it all effectively and with reflection is key, and a skill to teach Ss #ditchbook
A3: yes! What a perfect skill students will need as they participate in student led conferences, applications for summer opportunities and post high school plans! Make a collection of your extra curriculars! Your dream boards? Your proud moments! Your mistakes too. #Ditchbook
A3) Yes. They will know how to do it in college or in a career. They will know how to organize things and find them. Wish I would have learned how to do that in school. Been a struggle. #DitchBook
A3) Yes we should teach students how to curate content. It's the digital age, and it is important for students to learn how to gather resources for research, projects, an future works. Students will be able to learn critical thinking and information management . #ditchbook
A3: Curation helps educators gather and organize teaching resources.
It helps students manage data gathered for research.
It keeps us, as human beings, from drowning in a sea of useless information.
#ditchbook
A3 - we are organizers of our world. Can’t help it - so let’s get good at it and do it with purpose-
So long as it doesn’t drive us crazy and prevent living in the moment
#ditchbook
A3) I do believe we should be teaching our students to curate because it is a valuable skill in their future education and even in their personal lives, financial records, ideas, previous work should all be curated #ditchbook
A3 I honestly had not considered how important it is to teach curation and I know there are instances when I do teach those skills but I definitely need to reflect and find ways to be more intentional in my teaching. Really curation is tied to executive function #ditchbook
A3 #ditchbook Curation skills are good to teach, but also the skills of collaboration and sharing - Like @EDUcre8ive said - we don't all have to start from scratch
A2: many! I like using Google Slides and more recently, @wakelet . I love that with @wakeleti can save resources from virtually any type of media, organize it, and write notes to myself, all in an easy to follow visual layout #ditchbook
A3 It is important to be able to sift through all of the "stuff". We need to know WHAT we are looking for and we need to know WHY we chose it over something else.
Our kids need to be able to do this too. #ditchbook
A3: Hey guys! Joining in late...but here I am Melissa, Tech Integration Spacialist from FL. Curation for Ss is a crucial skill...learning to prioritize and organize sets them up for weeding through loads info online #ditchbook
Curation isn’t a skill we can and should be teaching in a silo => we model curation skills when sharing content with Ss and ask them to do the same when sharing with us - it is a relevant and embedded skill to their daily lives! #Ditchbook
A3 #DitchBook YES! I’m convinced that curation is a life skill and the 5th C. We live in the Information Age. It’s not about do you know something but what you’re able to do with it. Enter Curation.
Q3: learners need to know what tools work for THEM. All learnersneef to know what tools work for them and put them in their backpack #ditchbook

A4: I created a collection of SEL resources to accompany a blog post recently. And am working with other Ts to create a “plan” for shifting practices this spring towsrds more personalized learning through SEL. #ditchbook
A2: Wakelet has helped me take the seemingly hundreds of bookmarked sites on my web browser and organize them so I’m not frustrated or forgetful when I try to find them! Such a great time saver and I can share my curated collections with others-double win! #ditchbook
A4 #ditchbook
I curate lesson ideas, helpful edtech resources for myself and teachers I support. You can find some of my most recent curated stuff at https://t.co/S4U3v2Vecd
A3 Curation is an organizational tool that is so necessary as a 21st century learner. We used to curate in binders and notebooks. We have just shifted the organizational tool. Without organization of information, Ss cannot continue on their learning path. #ditchbook
Curation is an active + often messy process that involves a lot of sorting, so sometimes teachers avoid it because active, messy learning isn't part of their school culture. We have to trust our students. A curator's mindset is all about embracing those attributes. #DItchBook
A3: SUCH an important skill for students. In an era where information is so easily accessible, plentiful, and available to students at any time, they need to be equipped with skills to make sense of it and navigate it in a meaningful way #ditchbook
A4) Here is a rough collection of Formative Assessment info Inhave been sharing with a few colleagues at work.Formative Assessment - https://t.co/14ykUTartg#ditchbook
A4: curation also helps learners understand what resources and organization systems work for them and which don’t. Helpful moving forward in life for any obstacles down the road! #ditchbook
I have begun curating #edtech tools for each content area using @wakelet in order to help faculty locate and then utilize tech in their courses #ditchbook
A4 I don’t really curate and share. I defer to others. Curation actually drives me slightly nuts!
I have a few good tools and sites - I change when I meet people and we have a conversation and sharing session.
#ditchbook
A4: I have created a collection of tech help collections for teachers I work with that include written, photo, and video instructions on how to use tech tools we have available in the district. With Wakelet, I can easily share these! #ditchbook
Knowing what to omit is as vital as knowing what to keep! Distinguish between signal + noise. Good filmmakers are good curators: they know what to leave on the cutting room floor. We need to help our students learn those same sorting skills + trust them to do it well! #DitchBook
A4 I need to get better at curation! Here is a Wakelet I messed around with in the summer looking at math resources for best instructional practice. https://t.co/4WNQSvI3hI#DitchBook
A4 I curate tech tips, resources for new lessons, and most recently puppy breeders (not for educational purposes) - for that life balance thing we teachers are supposed to do. 🤔 #ditchbook
Thank you 💛 for ANOTHER amazing #Ditchbook chat!
And special thanks to @SEANJFAHEY for once again being a FABULOUS co-moderator!
See you all next week! Same bat 🦇 time ⏰ same bat 🦇 channel 📺
