Steven Helmick, Proud Principal and Lead Learner @RobertsElemLRSD! I love pumpkin spiced lattes, leaves changing colors, and crisp morning runs in the cold weather! #RobertsSoarsChat
I noticed you steered clear of the coveted This is Us time. Many thanks! Might need to hold out for A Million Little Things too. I’ll let you know after Wednesday about that. #robertssoarschat
A1: Home innovation = K Cups. I love coffee, but who wants an entire pot?!? Education innovation = Twitter Chats! Such a valuable way to connect with other educators locally and across the globe! #RobertsSoarsChat
A1 let my kids have choice in their book clubs. The kids “try on” the books I have ready for clubs and I let them pick their top three and I group them. I try to pick book clubs that also connect to topics taught in class too. Starting clubs next week. #robertssoarschat
I've started using @Seesaw this year. The other day the kids did a voice over a picture of their multiplication model and it seemed to ease the confusion about ”the new math” their teaching and the parent involvement made a huge difference #robertssoarschat
Yes! CHOICE with a PURPOSE! Very cool. Love that book clubs are starting to meet kids on their instructional/reading levels! Keep it up! #RobertsSoarsChat
So cool @melanieadams593! I love that you incorporating this is fostering parental involvement and clarity of content! @Seesaw must love this! Keep it up! #RobertsSoarsChat

A1- Not my invention but...We started using Google Team Drives last year to store EVERYTHING related to projects. Now everyone in the group has access anywhere and their project materials can be shared with community partners easily! It has been a game changer! #RobertsSoarsChat
This is a game changer! It has done wonders for our admin team to in having stuff in one location! Also, looking forward to seeing how the staff classroom does the same thing. #RobertsSoarsChat
A1- Home- Marco Polo is a great way to chat with friends and family. At school, I am doing writing conferences in docs and leaving comments about what is in need of work, and what is fabulous. Then I can spend more time with those who need it. #RobertsSoarsChat
A2: Innovation in leadership = allowing others the opportunity to lead and shine through their strengths. Innovation in teaching = allowing kids to create, discover, #failforward. Innovation in learning = #failforward, take risks, read! #RobertsSoarsChat

A2- This year we are going to be using some new types of tech that I have no idea how to use! I plan to learn WITH the students. I think it’s valuable for the kids to see me research, experience trial and error, problem solve. They need to learn how to learn. #RobertsSoarsChat
A2 creating innovation opportunities in class requires strong community and team work. Ss must trust the teacher who In turn helps Ss realize they can trust themselves. Not sure if I’ve made this happen in class yet, but trying to make a safe place for it #robertssoarschat
A3: Technology. I know it can be a love/hate thing for many, but it is a GAME CHANGER! We live in a tech world. If you're not on board you are already left behind. #RobertsSoarsChat
We need to expose our kids to how to utilize technology appropriately. Keeping it out of the classroom doesn't help.... it hinders learning in the 21st century! #RobertsSoarsChat
A3what has changed today is instant sharing and feedback. Ss can create and share their ideas immediately via apps like seesaw, and instantly their families are in on their learning. We are developing collaborative kiddos in all ways home and at school #robertssoarschat

Technology has changed so much of how we communicate and will be a part of our kids social and professional life.. Like everything, there are pros and cons.. We must take on the challenge of teaching them how to use it for good #RobertsSoarsChat
A3- Devices to “connect to learning” are everywhere: watches, phones, tablets, computers...we are surrounded! We would be crazy not to use it to our advantage in teaching. #RobertsSoarsChat
Q3 Because information is so available with technology we must teach students even more effective ways to distinguish reliable information and facts. Research skills are a must! #RobertsSoarsChat
Our kids live in a microwave world. The key is for them to allow their thoughts to simmer enough to have depth of knowledge while providing an avenue where they can have instant/microwavable feedback and connection to others. #RobertsSoarsChat
Tech also exposes our students to increased innovation opportunities. What is happening in the world? How are people meeting challenges and finding solutions? What a great springboard for brainstorming possible innovation resources! #robertssoarschat
A3 Technology has changed our world, and makes innovation easier. Students are tech savvy and easily engaged in anything that includes technology. #RobertsSoarsChat
We have been talking A LOT about this in EAST!!! The kids need to realize what they put out on the internet now...follows them!!! Good or bad...we HAVE a responsibility as teachers to teach them to use it correctly! #robertssoarschat

Yeah pretty wordy! Basically we need to allow them the time and space to wrestle with challenging content (SIMMERING WITH IDEAS) but when they share their thoughts we need to jump on it and provide valuable feedback and conversation (MICROWAVE RESPONSE TIME) #RobertsSoarsChat
It’s so interesting...technology is so prevelant even with our littles. They can learn from it too. But we are also seeing students with too much tech and not enough old fashioned imaginative play which is so important to our kinders on so many levels! #robertssoarschat
I agree. I love that you focused on tech being a springboard into action. Tech isn't the goal. Authentic learning experiences is the goal! #RobertsSoarsChat
A3 I walked into a redone terminal at LaGuardia this summer and this is what it looked like. There was no seating without a screen attached. The future is now. #RobertsSoarsChat
I still don’t get the microwave analogy, but yeah. Kids do need to have time to wrestle with their thinking! I Do think with a topic such as innovation, maybe we can look at an induction oven instead of microwave. Seems more 21st century #robertssoarschat

There are fundamental things our Ss need to learn for lifelong success, but we also need to understand the curiosities of our Ss. What interests them? What do they have questions about? Nurturing curiosity encourages lifelong and self-directed learners! #robertssoarschat
Where do they come from? What challenges do they face? What potential makes them unique? How can we guide them to where they want to and can go? #RobertsSoarsChat
A4- We need to know...What makes each student special, gifted, and unique? What are their strengths and weaknesses? What’s their passion/interests? #RobertsSoarsChat
A5: We must be willing to share, connect, and collaborate with the teacher next door, across town, around our state, and throughout our world. #RobertsSoarsChat
A4- We need to understand who our children are, and what skill set they’re coming to school with. As educators, we need to be open to differentiating instruction to meet the needs of all our kiddo’s. #RobertsSoarsChat
It underscores you value them and who they are. This is a vehicle to demonstrate how much we care and know they have something unique to offer. Their ideas matter and are important, not just to them, but to us, the educators and our world!
A5: We have to continue to work on building our community so that are relationships are deeper. Student to student, teacher to student, teacher to parent, and teacher to teacher! #robertssoarschat
