Welcome to #prinleaderchat this evening. We will be discussing "Improving Your Instructional Leadership"
Please introduce yourself and tell us where you're from
Q1: As an instructional leader, what is the importance of sharing instructional resources with staff?
Please share effective examples you have tried or seen as a leader
@cybraryman1#prinleaderchat
A1 It is vital we share and collaborate instructional resources as “the smartest person in the room is the room”. I shared this with staff. Got this idea from @RichHayzler . #PrinLeaderChat
In my weekly communication with staff, I include links to articles, blogs, and videos. If you aren’t engaging in learning, you’re falling behind. #Prinleaderchat
Q1: As an instructional leader, what is the importance of sharing instructional resources with staff?
Please share effective examples you have tried or seen as a leader
@cybraryman1#prinleaderchat
Great to have a @MasonSchools leader jump in. Mrs Bly is a true instructional leader. Her building has a great deal of passion & life for the learning process #PrinLeaderChat
A1 Sharing resources returns leaders to their teaching roots. We have emerged from being only the building principal to a lead learner when we continue to share our professional growth strategies. #prinleaderchat
A1) While I think it is important to share instructional resources with staff, I think we (admins) often try to tell teachers what to do with those resources or how to use them in their classes. We must treat them as the experts and let them figure out the "how."
#PrinLeaderChat
A1) Your teachers are of utmost importance and their talent levels yield varying degrees of learning. Resources I’ve used w/ Ts include Common Instructional Framework, @edutopia, and #TLAP book study. #prinleaderchat
A1: That's a primary purpose. We need to assist & support our teachers as much as possible. Remember, teachers don't mind change or initiatives as long they are supported & receive necessary training. #PrinLeaderChat
Q1: As an instructional leader, what is the importance of sharing instructional resources with staff?
Please share effective examples you have tried or seen as a leader
@cybraryman1#prinleaderchat
A1: I created a website for staff that has articles, videos, etc We do book studies and are currently doing a "Jumpstart January PD" that encourages them to take a look at resources. Created a mini PD series called #learningsparkshttps://t.co/lvwo5xY9e3#prinleaderchat
A1: In addition to the What & the Why, I’ve seen that the How is also important — Meeting them where they are and offering a broad range of How.#PrinLeaderChat
Q1: As an instructional leader, what is the importance of sharing instructional resources with staff?
Please share effective examples you have tried or seen as a leader
@cybraryman1#prinleaderchat
Example meeting faculty where they are and offering a variety of How is this physical version of a Twitter feed that we used at our school. #PrinLeaderChat
A1: I believe my greatest instructional responsibility is not sharing resources, but facilitating the sharing of resources. #bettertogether#prinleaderchat
A1: If we truly believe the experts are in the classrooms, then we need to share examples FROM our classrooms. Programs, guest speakers, and outside experts shouldn't come before our own experts. #prinleaderchat
A1. Nothing gets better response from staff than the real-life instructional strategies being used within the building. Having staff share with PLC or at PD events, and highlighting them. As well as Ts going on instructional rounds is critical. Lots to learn from. #Prinleaderchat
A1: As the instructional leader, you’re the learner-in-chief of your school. Sharing resources is one way to model curiosity and the desire to always get better. #PrinLeaderChat
A1: Allows us to connect & share without the traditional “roles” that sometimes hinder growth. We are all in this together. Sharing, reflecting and growing together is a key ingredient to success! #prinleaderchat

A1) I think it's critical to share resources in a variety of ways - shared documents, twitter chats, google sites filled with ideas, Padlet... and most importantly - giving staff opportunities to share their expertise.
#PrinLeaderChat
A1: It is important to share resources as it encourages collaboration, keeps us in touch with our staff and the instruction happening, and it models our investment in learning. #PrinLeaderChat
Q1: As an instructional leader, what is the importance of sharing instructional resources with staff?
Please share effective examples you have tried or seen as a leader
@cybraryman1#prinleaderchat
Couldn't agree more @clegleiter! Our teachers are a wealth of resources but with limited time during their day, many of their ideas often stay inside their classrooms...we need to help facilitate connection and collaboration #PrinLeaderChat
A1: I believe my greatest instructional responsibility is not sharing resources, but facilitating the sharing of resources. #bettertogether#prinleaderchat
Q1: As an instructional leader, what is the importance of sharing instructional resources with staff?
Please share effective examples you have tried or seen as a leader
@cybraryman1#prinleaderchat
A1 Our district utilizes personalized PD let my administrators, instructional coaches, and teachers as a way to collaborate and showcase the strengths of others use of instructional resources #PrinLeaderChat@bobby__dodd
Q2: @john_hattie states:
"Effective instructional leaders should be concerned with interpreting evidence about the quality and nature of learning in the school."
What are effective data analysis strategies that create positive change in schools?
#prinleaderchat
A1: It is important to share resources with the right team members. Few resources are helpful for every discipline, grade level etc. Save teachers time by sharing specific and targeted resources with them. Personalized sharing sort of deal. #PrinLeaderChat
Q1: As an instructional leader, what is the importance of sharing instructional resources with staff?
Please share effective examples you have tried or seen as a leader
@cybraryman1#prinleaderchat
A1: Sharing instructional resources opens conversation w Ts, gives risk-takers sitting on the fence, courage to step out, & give instruction without pushing something down someone's throat. #PrinLeaderChat
A2. When looking at student writing, the best conversations are when teachers evaluate a sample separately, then discuss their evaluations. They grow so much from those exchanges.
#PrinLeaderChat
A1: It takes time to vet good resources so providing this to Ts is valuable bc it gives new information & saves time which empower Ts to spend more time working to individualize for Ss. #prinleaderchat
Q1: As an instructional leader, what is the importance of sharing instructional resources with staff?
Please share effective examples you have tried or seen as a leader
@cybraryman1#prinleaderchat
A1: I try to share things I see other teachers doing / using in the classroom. Has more meaning if someone down the hall has tried it out. #PrinLeaderChat
Q1: As an instructional leader, what is the importance of sharing instructional resources with staff?
Please share effective examples you have tried or seen as a leader
@cybraryman1#prinleaderchat
A1: I often take pictures of the good things happening in teachers' classroom in relation to PD we've done (IE: goal-setting, writing). I share with all for "virtual classroom visits" Example linked here: https://t.co/7HxPZVuKBA#PrinLeaderChat
A2. We focus on individual student growth and also adult growth. With students this includes assessment data, SEL data and their “soft skills”. Most important is to provide ways for kids to lead as that develops confidence. #PrinLeaderChat
A1b: I send out a Monday Motivation Newsletter with a whole page dedicated to resources. Love seeing Ts pick some up and run with them! #PrinLeaderChat
Q2: @john_hattie states:
"Effective instructional leaders should be concerned with interpreting evidence about the quality and nature of learning in the school."
What are effective data analysis strategies that create positive change in schools?
#prinleaderchat
A2. AttendNce rates of students AND staff. Number of students on ineligibility list. % of students involved in an after-school activity. Number of office referrals. Number of anonymous tips to admin about anti-social behaviors. % of parents at conferences. #Prinleaderchat
A2) Concerning data - there's a temptation to look for what needs to be fixed before we look for anything else. This is a bad practice.
We need to start with celebrations. People will understand where they can improve if they don't believe they're all bad.
#PrinLeaderChat
Short, quick, & small interval data points and analysis are essential. Waiting for end of unit tests or benchmarks, is too far apart and the data becomes old quickly. We’ve adjusted pacing calendars to ensure we are getting relevant data and making adjustments. #PrinLeaderChat
Q2: @john_hattie states:
"Effective instructional leaders should be concerned with interpreting evidence about the quality and nature of learning in the school."
What are effective data analysis strategies that create positive change in schools?
#prinleaderchat
a2 I am finding that assessing retention is hugely important. I see that highest scores in the short-term can be related to worst scores in the long-term with direct instruction. #PrinLeaderChat
A2: We are constantly looking at data. That data basically identifies our strengths and weaknesses. It gives us direction and drives instruction. "NUMBERS NEVER LIE." #prinleaderchat
Q2: @john_hattie states:
"Effective instructional leaders should be concerned with interpreting evidence about the quality and nature of learning in the school."

Q2: @john_hattie states:
"Effective instructional leaders should be concerned with interpreting evidence about the quality and nature of learning in the school."
What are effective data analysis strategies that create positive change in schools?
#prinleaderchat
A2:Gathering data on climate and culture is critical. Find out what the needs of your stakeholders are. Create common assessments in departments..analyze strengths and areas of growth. Sometimes the best data you can gather is just by talking with staff/students #prinleaderchat
A2: Mike Schmoker's article: Demystifying Data Analysis is THE best read for working with data in a way that is non-threatening but still works. SO GOOD! #PrinLeaderChathttps://t.co/lghWdm7Had
A1 sharing resources allows for instructional leaders to continue modeling the fact that they are lifelong learners. Additionally, sharing allows for the opportunity to have a conversation and build rapport and collegiality. #PrinLeaderChat
A2: One effective strategy is to not overemphasize the one/year blips in the data, positive or negative. If an area isn’t growing in year two or beyond, that’s a trend. Same holds true for increases. Look at the long term trends. #PrinLeaderChat
Q2: @john_hattie states:
"Effective instructional leaders should be concerned with interpreting evidence about the quality and nature of learning in the school."
What are effective data analysis strategies that create positive change in schools?
#prinleaderchat
A2: I'm loving our @MCCHarvardEd survey data of staff, students and parents. All three groups listed Happiness and Care as more important outcomes than Achievement. #PrinLeaderChat
I used ORID for the first time last week. It's really helpful to understand what others are thinking when they see the numbers before I rattle off my perceptions. #PrinLeaderChat
A2: Sharing the data in nonthreatening way, gives teachers the opportunity to reflect on things they notice and things they wonder about. I have experienced success with small groups that extend into larger conversations that can then lead to positive change #PrinLeaderChat
Q2: @john_hattie states:
"Effective instructional leaders should be concerned with interpreting evidence about the quality and nature of learning in the school."

#prinleaderchat
A2: tracking pre/post data for content, and using forms to track behavior both positive and negative is an easy warp keep a pulse on campus learning & culture. However you track it can’t be an autopsy. Track consistently & often! #prinleaderchat
Q2: @john_hattie states:
"Effective instructional leaders should be concerned with interpreting evidence about the quality and nature of learning in the school."
What are effective data analysis strategies that create positive change in schools?
#prinleaderchat
A2: Honestly, I think it starts with good conversations about data! We started a data team last school year consisting of teachers and administrators. It has been a great way to look at, analyze, and share data with staff! #PrinLeaderChat
Q2: @john_hattie states:
"Effective instructional leaders should be concerned with interpreting evidence about the quality and nature of learning in the school."
What are effective data analysis strategies that create positive change in schools?
#prinleaderchat
A2: To analyze data, a crucial first step is to eliminate blame and level the playing field. Be concerned with growth, not achievement. Establish a baseline for each S, classroom, and grade level, then focus on movement from that point. Achievement is a byproduct #prinleaderchat
To improve your instructional leadership it is important to be a connected leader who is not afraid to seek feedback and support from your staff & online connections. Our Administrators & Tech page https://t.co/0TBx4XHo4K Leadership page https://t.co/jPnn390jId#PrinLeaderChat
Q3: What are ways leaders evaluate the quality of assessments in their buildings and the effectiveness of alternative assessments used by staff to assess students?
#prinleaderchat
A2:Gathering data on climate and culture is critical. Find out what the needs of your stakeholders are. Create common assessments in departments..analyze strengths and areas of growth. Sometimes the best data you can gather is just by talking with staff/students #prinleaderchat
2) I think the most powerful use of data is when teachers work in effective teams to analyze formative assessment data and work towards using that data in a timely manner that supports the needs of all the learners. #collectiveresponsibility#PrinLeaderChat
A3. We look at the learning and did the assessment produce high quality work (authentic skills) or low level knowledge. We do quarterly content team reflecting. #PrinLeaderChat
Q3: What are ways leaders evaluate the quality of assessments in their buildings and the effectiveness of alternative assessments used by staff to assess students?
#prinleaderchat
We use Q’s from item banks provided by the district. Our coaches create them with district specialist support. I review them and our teachers look at them as well. We also cross reference and vet against @lead4ward resources to see how often items are tested. #PrinLeaderChat
Q3: What are ways leaders evaluate the quality of assessments in their buildings and the effectiveness of alternative assessments used by staff to assess students?
#prinleaderchat
A2: Often the most effective yet underutilized data is asking the students what’s working and what isn’t. We get lost in the spreadsheets and the color-coded growth graphs, when some open discussion and conversation can lead to answers the charts don’t provide. #prinleaderchat
Q2: @john_hattie states:
"Effective instructional leaders should be concerned with interpreting evidence about the quality and nature of learning in the school."
What are effective data analysis strategies that create positive change in schools?
#prinleaderchat
A3: We analyze our assessments in PLCs, looking at DOK levels of questioning and student performance. District Goal this year is to analyze common assessment data on specific standards 4 times a year to create local benchmarks for future years.
A2 we're all a different stages when it comes to the utilization of data. Taking ownership of the data and moving beyond the superficial thought that it is used 2 reprimand as opposed 2 growth is 1 of the most important hurdles 2 surpass in order 2 make use of it. #prinleaderchat
A3: being in the classrooms. Talking w/Ss about their understandingly the learning tasks are the best ways to evaluate the learning happening in the room #PrinLeaderChat
A3: If we are using outside assessments, it is our responsibility to do our homework. We need to make sure assessments are measuring what they are supposed to measure. We use PD time for item analysis, dept collaboration, and assessment/curriculum revisions. #PrinLeaderChat
Q3: What are ways leaders evaluate the quality of assessments in their buildings and the effectiveness of alternative assessments used by staff to assess students?
#prinleaderchat
A3 the best way leaders can assess effectiveness of assessments is by assessing what learning it leads to/ what will our learners gain by knowing these skills/ competencies? If the answer is nothing the? is why are they being asked to demonstrate this knowledge #PrinLeaderChat
A3: A nearly fullproof way to evaluate assessment quality is to watch a student as they take it. Not the conversation with the teacher afterword, not score results, - but watching students during the performance. A well designed assessment reflects taught skills. #prinleaderchat
A3) I wish I had more training in my education program for writing quality assessments. As a math teacher, I followed the layout of the textbook. #prinleaderchat
A3: We look at actual assessments and ensure that they are aligned with state and district standards. Of course, we also look at student data. We then review the data with our teachers to identify "hotspots". #prinleaderchat
Q3: What are ways leaders evaluate the quality of assessments in their buildings and the effectiveness of alternative assessments used by staff to assess students?

A3. Teachers analyze Priority Standards formative assessments each quarter. Our Admin Team provides feedback for teachers each quarter. All of this information helps drive classroom instruction. #PrinLeaderChat
Mahalo for joining #PrinLeaderChat! Special thanks to my buddy @bobby__dodd! Be sure to follow your fellow chat participants and grow your #PLN. See you again next week as 2013 @NASSP National Digital Principal @Dwight_Carter discusses Coaching Teachers and Principals.
Agree! Giving students a voice and choice in how they want to demonstrate evidence of learning is critical as we move toward building a system for innovation age learning. #PrinLeaderChat

Even with that structure, though, it is easy to mistake short-term results with direct instruction as superior to effort-ful learning for which strength may not become apparent until months later on a test that measures retention. #PrinLeaderChat
Thanks all at #prinleaderchat for stretching my thinking tonight.
I’m officially ready for the challenges of next week.
Thanks @bobby__dodd and @winstonsakurai. You are both awesome!!
Thanks for the ideas and resources. As a first year admin, it is extremely beneficial to learn from talented experienced leaders! @bobby__dodd#PrinLeaderChat

A3 assessments need to be previewed and measured for relevance. The assessments need to be aligned with what is being taught and in accordance to the timeline. There should be constant checks and shifting in accordance to the results. #prinleaderchat
A3: I think this can primarily be done through PLCs. Although our staff hasn't had consistent PLC time until this year, they are making great strides. Phase 1 is identifying essential standards, and phase 2 will be looking at the quality of our assessments. #PrinLeaderChat
