Q1: Teaching like a PIRATE has nothing to do w/the dictionary definition! We don’t want you attacking & robbing ships at sea. It’s the spirit! What is it about the SPIRIT of a pirate that makes for a great educator? #DojoChat

A1: Pirates were willing to "Break the rules" occasionally when it was for the good of their crew. As Ts, we need to be willing to break with traditional teaching methods to best serve our students! #dojochat

A1: Perseverance and uniqueness pirate educators aren't afraid to be different and step out of their comfort zones to try new things & they keep trying until they find something that works for their students #dojochat
One day I stopped my students as they entered the classroom so we could take selfies. They were not expecting it... They loved it! It set the tone for the entire day. #DojoChat
☠️WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE SPIRIT OF A PIRATE THAT MAKES FOR A GREAT EDUCATOR? ☠️
✨A1: Pirates love a challenge, they fight for what they believe in, and always travel with a crew! Pirate educators do the same! ✨
#DojoChat
Q1: Teaching like a PIRATE has nothing to do w/the dictionary definition! We don’t want you attacking & robbing ships at sea. It’s the spirit! What is it about the SPIRIT of a pirate that makes for a great educator? #DojoChat
I believe it stems from the adventures pirates have! I always picture the movie The Goonies when I think about the spirit. It's all about the adventure! #DojoChat
Q1: Teaching like a PIRATE has nothing to do w/the dictionary definition! We don’t want you attacking & robbing ships at sea. It’s the spirit! What is it about the SPIRIT of a pirate that makes for a great educator? #DojoChat
Q1: Teaching like a PIRATE has nothing to do w/the dictionary definition! We don’t want you attacking & robbing ships at sea. It’s the spirit! What is it about the SPIRIT of a pirate that makes for a great educator? #DojoChat
A1: @burgessdave gotta admit, I've seen your #pirate movement all over twitter, but haven't read your books 🙈 Your pirate definition def. describes me! I'm rebellious and spontaneous #dojochat
A1: Going through uncharted waters alone if it is what's best. Working hard and playing hard! Taking risks, bending the rules! And breaking into a fabulous sea shanty every once in a while!! #DojoChat
Q2: A key tenet of #tlap: “Don’t just teach a lesson, create an EXPERIENCE!” What is the difference & how can we make content come ALIVE by creating extraordinary experiences for students? #DojoChat
#dojochat A1. Understanding it is okay to be different and try something new. Pirates have a sense of bravery mixed with curiousity which we should all have in the education field today.
Pirates aren't afraid of a changing wind! They know the seas are unpredictable and are ready with engaging content and a great environment whether it's a change in curriculum or a new principal #dojochat
A1: I agree with the adventure and risk taking. I also believe it is about not worrying about your colleague's opinions of you, only if you are connecting with kids. I spent a lot of my 23 teaching years not rocking the boat, now I do. #DojoChat
A2: I think lessons just tend to deliver information... usually without relevance. However an experience immerses students in something meaningful. It's something they won't forget. #DojoChat
A2 An experience will stick with our Ss. They will revisit this experience in their memories for years to come. Striving to create as many experiences as possible will create depth in our teaching content. #dojochat
A2: I was a theater major for my undergrad, I use improv and acting techniques in all my teaching. You make learning an experience by removing the passive, I teach, you learn, and making it let me explain to you this awesome thing and we can learn more about it together #dojochat
A2 It's all about engaging students! If I just stand up and teach, they are bored out of their minds. When I plan a hands-on experience for them, their faces light up and they are immersed in the curriculum! #dojochat
Teaching does not necessarily mean students are learning. Through EXPERIENCE, students can grow in their knowledge and excitement to LEARN. Teachers need to make their classroom and learning experience LIVELY and FUN in order for students to engage and learn. #dojochat
Q2: Train your crew then let them run the ship! Let them figure out choppy waters-but don’t let anyone go overboard 😉 PBL with hands on experiences that include their interests #DojoChat
A2: Creating an experience means attending to the atmosphere with music or decorations. Possibly dressing in a costume. These things really engage kids. It’s about makingthe curriculum come alive. #DojoChat
An experience is immersive. I physically change my teaching environment OFTEN to get involved. Love messing with lighting / music / seating to make an effect! @burgessdave#dojochat
A2: If it ain't real life, students do. not. care. Create learning experiences that students recognize as valuable to them (even if it seems like it has no value to you) #dojochat
#dojochat A2. We are reading the Among the Hidden series in 7th grade on book 4 now and the theme is about the shortage of food. We are growing gardens and soon will be cooking to create a real life experience.
A2: it’s easy to forget a lesson but it takes a lot to forget an experience! Introduce basic factions with a cooking lesson with all the wrong measure cups! #DojoChat
Q2: A key tenet of #tlap: “Don’t just teach a lesson, create an EXPERIENCE!” What is the difference & how can we make content come ALIVE by creating extraordinary experiences for students? #DojoChat
A2: Experiences are the things my former students still talk about 15 years out of my classroom.Immersive, intriguing, exciting, creative, & a bit crazy. When kids talk about time with me it is experiences they remember not lessons. Wouldn't have it any other way. #DojoChat
A2: bringing energy and excitement is key to #studentengagement. If you’re excited, they’re excited. If they’re excited, learning takes place w/out realizing it #dojochat
A2. Don't limit student learning to your own knowledge. Since reading your book. I have learned to view my role as a learner along with my students. I give them tools to access knowledge. Then we learn together. I'm just the biggest student in the class. #tlap#dojochat
A2. Don't limit student learning to your own knowledge. Since reading your book. I have learned to view my role as a learner along with my students. I give them tools to access knowledge. Then we learn together. I'm just the biggest student in the class. #tlap#dojochat
Can I like this 100 times? Yes! Have the personal power, intestinal fortitude to teach in the most powerful way you can! Critics be damned! #DojoChat#DontLetCriticsStealYourSoul
YAS! I'm a terrible actress/singer but I try to use voices, songs, excitement and exaggerated body language, I may look like a fool but it's for the kids! #dojochat
A2: In an experience everyone has a voice and active role in learning. Giving choice & control over to the students and planning student lead learning activities. Tapping into students interests and building lessons based on their interests. #Dojochat
Q2: A key tenet of #tlap: “Don’t just teach a lesson, create an EXPERIENCE!” What is the difference & how can we make content come ALIVE by creating extraordinary experiences for students? #DojoChat
Q2: changing to meet the students needs, emotional and academic, building relationships, using games, real world experiences, and activities that are purposeful and relevant. #dojochat
Students can tell when a teacher is into it!! Be the role model. Show students just how exciting learning can be... it truly makes a difference. Be there for kids... they deserve it! #DojoChat#KidsDeserveIt
A2: bringing energy and excitement is key to #studentengagement. If you’re excited, they’re excited. If they’re excited, learning takes place w/out realizing it #dojochat
A2: Theme days where all learning is focused on 1 topic, dressing differently, creating the environment, ie. turning my room into a rainforest. Music helps a lot too. #DojoChat
A2: Make sure that you are excited and passionate about what you are teaching. I am a strong believer in give my students hands-on projects and activities. #DojoChat
A2: Teaching does not necessarily mean students are learning. Through EXPERIENCE, students can grow in their knowledge and excitement to LEARN. Teachers need to make their classroom and learning experience LIVELY and FUN in order for students to engage and learn. #dojochat
Q3: It’s not just about raising test scores, its about raising human potential! How can/do you embed LCL’s (Life-Changing Lessons) into your curriculum? Examples? #DojoChat#tlap
A3: We are in the life-changing business!! Embrace the mightier purpose of being an educator and add LCL's (life-changing lessons) into everything you teach. #DojoChat#tlap#LeadLAP
Q1: Teaching like a PIRATE has nothing to do w/the dictionary definition! We don’t want you attacking & robbing ships at sea. It’s the spirit! What is it about the SPIRIT of a pirate that makes for a great educator? #DojoChat
A3: I think being real and honest with your students is critical in teaching the that you are a human being just like them. Some of the best lessons I got from my teachers were not something in their lesson plan, but something from their raw, personal experience. #dojochat
I generally leave my door open so when other kids walk past my room & stop to peek and listen to my lesson I know I'm doing something fun lol. #dojochat
A2: Give students the reigns. Let THEM write the questions, make the game or create a learning activity. When they own it, it takes them to a new level of learning. #DojoChat#tlchat
A3: during class meeting we talk about social skills, life skills and practice them! I also do free play to help build social skills! I try to give my students real life task! How they will use what they are learning in life! #DojoChat
Q3: It’s not just about raising test scores, its about raising human potential! How can/do you embed LCL’s (Life-Changing Lessons) into your curriculum? Examples? #DojoChat#tlap
A3: Hmm... I have to say that #makerspace has made an impact on my students. They are making arcade games using cardboard. They are creators!! The games will be played during indoor recess. #DojoChat#CainsArcadeChallenge
A3. We have at least one service-learning project each year. This not only teaches a sense of responsibility for our community; it also gives students an empowering experience that makes a real world impact #talp#dojochat
#DojoChat A3 Just recently had John Stamos speak with our students and shared his story of music and acting. Several students ask questions of those subjects because they are interested. His talk engaged/inspired them.
Q3: Tech integration in meaningfways. Not all tech is created equal! It’s a tool not a babysitter and when used effectively you’ll find that treasure mateys! Tech that allows teachers to be the captains! #DojoChat@gonoodle@Flipgrid@nearpod@SpheroEdu
#dojochat A3. When we cover unfair taxes in 7th grade social studies we did an experiment where they had to pay taxes for wearing glasses or having a pet etc. They were so angry their Skittles pile was getting smaller as the king's pile was getting bigger.
A3 By making them relatable and engaging students will remember them for life. You always remembered what you learned when you were able to create something. Creation is KEY! #dojochat
A3: CHALLENGE THEM! Don't just give them a worksheet! Immerse your students in your lessons by giving them choice and encouraging them to pursue their passions. They will likely take it a step further when it's meaningful to them, and they'll create their own LCLs! #DojoChat
My classroom mission statement is to get Ss thinking creatively, critically, and collaboratively. When I have students ask me to do a project they thought of and when I see students helping each other through issues that’s a LCL to me. #DojoChat
A3 Life changing lessons are the ones that keep kids talking for weeks afterward. Usually they involve food. 😂 Especially teaching in a low-income area, life changing lessons often give students experiences that they would otherwise not have. #dojochat
Build a sense of urgency and excitement by believing they can do more. It never hurts to allow for some choice and to enjoy what you are doing. Build excitement and leave them desiring more. #dojochat
Q3: It’s not just about raising test scores, its about raising human potential! How can/do you embed LCL’s (Life-Changing Lessons) into your curriculum? Examples? #DojoChat#tlap
A3: SHHH I sometimes don't follow my character ed "plans". Generally, I use my character ed. time to address something relevant in the classroom. Even in K we use real words like trustworthiness, focus, compassion and have some "real talk" and reflection. #dojochat
#DojoChat A3 Also Had Philo Barnhart & Charles Moisant visit our school. Mr. Barnhart is the creator of Ariel from The Little Mermaid and other Disney animation movies. Inspired many of our art students to see what they can do with their skills.
A3: Teaching in the moment all the time. When I make a mistake I own up to it and learn from it. Showing them it's ok to fail forward as we learn together. Creating an atmosphere of perseverance even when facing challenges. #Dojochat
Q3: It’s not just about raising test scores, its about raising human potential! How can/do you embed LCL’s (Life-Changing Lessons) into your curriculum? Examples? #DojoChat#tlap
A3 Teach students about work ethic, practicing, responsibility, goal setting, continuous improvement, and growth mindset. All of this can be done while teaching the content curriculum. #DojoChat
Q4: In #tlap, we always pre-heat the grill to make content SIZZLE when we drop it! How do you build up mystery, curiosity, anticipation, & buzz ahead of time for lessons? #DojoChat
A4: Don't serve raw steak (content) to kids! It's the rub, seasoning, marinade, side dishes, beverages, desserts, & how you PRE-HEAT THE GRILL that makes the difference! #DojoChat#tlap
Credit to my colleague @1988project for arranging this interview. We work together to bring outside history makers in to share with our students. #DojoChat
A4 I feel like I could use some ideas on this. In the past I have shown S's the pieces of our science experiment and then sent them home to let their minds wander. #DojoChat
Q4: In #tlap, we always pre-heat the grill to make content SIZZLE when we drop it! How do you build up mystery, curiosity, anticipation, & buzz ahead of time for lessons? #DojoChat
A4 My favorite way to start an amazing lesson or introduce a topic begins by quietly telling a student, "Please go close the door." That "taboo element" makes student "lean in" and really pay attention. That begins the excitement. #dojochat
A4: Giving students a taste of what's to come! I am going to school for history and one of my professors has us watch a movie/tv show about the subject we are covering each week for extra credit. It is a great way to have a taste of what the lesson will be and have fun
#dojochat
A4: I love making them conspirators in a secret. I use my fourth grade teacher Mr. Wilson who was a rockstar in my eyes and say "Mr. Wilson's secret for..." t
They eat it up!!! #DojoChat
A4: I always try to keep them guessing. Leave them wanting more for the next lesson! I want them thinking “if she is this crazy today what will she do tomorrow!!” #DojoChat
Q4: In #tlap, we always pre-heat the grill to make content SIZZLE when we drop it! How do you build up mystery, curiosity, anticipation, & buzz ahead of time for lessons? #DojoChat
A2: students should be exposed to a variety of experiences and tools. Then they begin to see what works best for them to learn and grow. Exposure leads to #personalizedlearning, #wonder, and #curiosity. #DojoChat
Q2: A key tenet of #tlap: “Don’t just teach a lesson, create an EXPERIENCE!” What is the difference & how can we make content come ALIVE by creating extraordinary experiences for students? #DojoChat
A4 I sing (not well) or tell a story, or play a game to peak their interest. If I'm bored with it, they are too, so I also try to get excited! #Dojochat
A4: I always try to make a story out of a lesson, for instance we are doing a unit on community helpers and I started the lesson with a crime scene (our reading buddy's were stolen) and we had to brainstorm who we can call for help. #dojochat
#DojoChat A4 Discuss a event history and then find that expert to share the story. Congressman John Lewis shared his story of Selma and the March on Washington with our students.
A4 I plan to use materials that students love to play with. Try and find cool videos that relate to students. Also getting students excited ahead of time for whats to come builds anticipation! #dojochat
I send out DojoNotes on Sunday night that give little teasers on what we will be doing in class. Sometimes these are "Guess who is visiting us this week?" Or "What's in the box?" This gets parents excited about school too! #tlap#dojochat
A4: give choices to students and let them see where the content takes them or introduce pieces of content over time in a unit plan leaving room for different directions based on student interactions and curiosity #dojochat
A4 I often leave hints around the room that lead towards our experience. It gets the kids thinking and questioning before we even start. The best part is hearing their mini-conversations with each other about what is going to happen next. #dojochat
A4: Dress up as a character from something that you are teaching, I leave little clues around the room too. In December, our classroom magical elf was a great way to get the kids excited for lessons. I always tell my kids there is a method to my madness! #DojoChat
A4: I love to start many lessons with a personal experience from when I was my Ss’ age. They feed off the fact that I was their age once and went to the same school 😉#dojochat
A4: In kindergarten I will do a related read aloud, show a short video clip, bring in/display objects related to the subject for students to explore.#DojoChat
Q4: In #tlap, we always pre-heat the grill to make content SIZZLE when we drop it! How do you build up mystery, curiosity, anticipation, & buzz ahead of time for lessons? #DojoChat
A3: I share my life experiences and those of my 14-year-old son to help them connect what we are doing with their lives. I try to let them know that I know what is happening in their lives and what’s coming for them. #DojoChat
A4: part 2 the reason for the choices is because many times students end up giving the perfect segway into the lesson you as the teacher are about to drop 🙂 #dojochat
Somethings are easier than others. When I like a content or theme, it is easier b/c I am genuinely excited to do it, aka contageous. I struggle with math because I'm not all in. Trying some relevant project based my to cover topics and hopefully be more exciting. #dojochat
Q4: In #tlap, we always pre-heat the grill to make content SIZZLE when we drop it! How do you build up mystery, curiosity, anticipation, & buzz ahead of time for lessons? #DojoChat
Q4- LOVE this Q! Over winter break, I posted a series of “WinterQuests” to my website, offering a bridge to my storyline they wouldn’t get in class, leading up to the new semester. Also teased the theme with sneak peak “posters” @burgessdave#DojoChat
#DojoChat A4 when we study the year of 1980, introduce Ss to the 1980 Olympic Hockey Team and the movie “Miracle.” Mike Eruzione has filled in the rest by sharing his story. Very humble! All about the team!
A4: I tell them a secret, or tell them not to tell first grade that we're doing first grade work if we're doing something that I know may be very challenging for most of the class. #dojochat
#DojoChat In math class I try to show how the content that we are learning in class has relevance to their everyday life as older students and adults. I believe it is important to let Ss know it is ok to struggle-that life isn’t always easy, but good things can come from it.
Q3: It’s not just about raising test scores, its about raising human potential! How can/do you embed LCL’s (Life-Changing Lessons) into your curriculum? Examples? #DojoChat#tlap
We currently still have a computer lab & para I have the privilege of working with. She helps me prior to integrating tech into classroom lessons they’re able to learn the tools in the lab with engaging activities. This pre-heat is huge for Ts buy in & Ss success #DojoChat
Q5: I want students to graduate not just knowing my curriculum; I want them to know ME, as well! How do/can you add more of YOURSELF (hobbies, interest, passions, personality) to your class? Why is this powerful for you AND them? #DojoChat
It’s all about being present and taking advantage of situations and moments that occur. Every day we do a quote of the day & ss discuss the meaning to them. The conversations held are so deep, and often result in us taking action to better the world #dojochat
#dojochat. A4. I like what questions in junior high. What if you had to hide for 13 years? What if you were born a slave? What if you were in a new country and didn't know the language?
A4: Another thing I like to do is give the Ss a question to think about the entire lesson, then send home a dojo message challenge to the parents for Ss to answer. If I get replies, Ss get dojo dollars in their bank. #DojoChat
Hard one. I guess my natural enthusiasm for all things literature pops up. I get excited about what is coming up next. Hope it rubs off on Ss.#DojoChat#tlap
We read a story about a little girl who learned that things don’t need to perfect in order to be magnificent. We were inspired to write positive affirmations to say when we make mistakes. Are they perfect? No. Are they MAGNIFICENT? Absolutely. #tlap#dojochat#growthmindset
A5 I think it's important for teachers to talk to their students like they are actual humans. Have a conversation, share interests, show them that you actually have a life outside of the classroom. They think we live there, you know... ;-) #DojoChat
A3: Share personal connections with students. “If I see someone older, disabled, a mother, a child, or just someone who looks tired, I give them a seat, open a door, ask how I can help.” #DojoChat#tlchat#kidsarethefuture
I often tell my kids not to tell the principal that I am teaching them 2nd grade "stuff." They think it's hilarious that I could get in trouble for challenging them. It immediately engages them though! #dojochat
I say this often! They are kids, but they are little people too! I talk to them with the respect I expect, without patronizing. I think they appreciate it! #DojoChat
A5: One example is when my students are working on a #GeniusHour project, I do one too. They see that I am a learner. It builds connections and shows them that we are always learners. They see that I am a risk taker and not afraid to make mistakes. #DojoChat#growthmindset
A5: Students won't work for a teacher they don't like. Showing them your personality is an opportunity to be vulnerable and show your students things you enjoy and develop relationships. I have @starwars bobbleheads on my desk, a @steelers poster up, and more! #DojoChat
#DojoChat A5 I am open & honest in the classroom. They know me. But I hope they see it's ok to let people know the open & honest, real THEM. I love the point in the year when a class becomes a family.
Q5: I want students to graduate not just knowing my curriculum; I want them to know ME, as well! How do/can you add more of YOURSELF (hobbies, interest, passions, personality) to your class? Why is this powerful for you AND them? #DojoChat
A5 Getting to know each other, making ourselves "human" to our students, let them know that we care. Learning happens BEST when students know that we care about them. #dojochat
A4:#DojoChat maybe it is a plain box sitting out that sparks wonder or a video of an activity that we are going to do. Showing my own excitement about something’s gets the Ss pumped and excited too. Now I get Ss asking-what’s happening tomorrow?
Q4: In #tlap, we always pre-heat the grill to make content SIZZLE when we drop it! How do you build up mystery, curiosity, anticipation, & buzz ahead of time for lessons? #DojoChat
A5: I chime in during class builders I sit and talk to my class all the time in class meeting! It makes a huge difference to Ss. Students can’t learn from a teacher they don’t like!! Right @leighmragsdale#DojoChat
Q5: I want students to graduate not just knowing my curriculum; I want them to know ME, as well! How do/can you add more of YOURSELF (hobbies, interest, passions, personality) to your class? Why is this powerful for you AND them? #DojoChat
A5: I think they leave the classroom knowing my 🐕 dog Walter maybe more than even me! Walt pops up in many activities and they go crazy...he makes some dojo Class Story appearances as well! Can you blame me? #DojoChat
A5, Start off the year by telling them about yourself, you are a person too and have interests, just like your students. Decorate your desk with pictures of people you love. Use your own life as examples #dojochat
A5: I love hockey and the LA Kings. My kids know this. I have bobble heads of my favorite players in my room. I talk Hockey with them and invite my kids to come watch when i play. #DojoChat
We are at work too high of a % of our lives to unplug ourselves when we walk in the building. I try to add more of myself to what I do all the time. #Rapport#Relationships#Human! #DojoChat#tlap
I LOVE using superheroes, gardening, art, cooking, and passion in my room. All things can be conceded to one of those and the students know me better and trust our relationship more. #dojochat
Q5: I want students to graduate not just knowing my curriculum; I want them to know ME, as well! How do/can you add more of YOURSELF (hobbies, interest, passions, personality) to your class? Why is this powerful for you AND them? #DojoChat
A5: Fill your classroom with your interests and hobbies and your history! Decorate your walls and your desk! Brighten up your room! This is powerful because it makes you vulnerable and students appreciate seeing their teachers' lives beyond the classroom.
#dojochat
#DojoChat A5 One of our HS SS teachers, regardless of the class he teaches, starts off the period with a song of the day. He is very passionate about music and shares that interest with them.
I have established a culture of learning. We work as a team. I do what they do. I read my own reflections to them. We talk about ourselves. We share. We question. They all have a sense of who I am. Don’t be afraid to let Ss see the real you. #DojoChat
pirate teachers possess AND most importantly SHARE the excitement of learning and willingness to take explore, take risks, make mistakes, and learn from them. #dojochat
A5 I often write a teacher Weekend Journal with pics to share my Weekend with them, show them pictures of trips or my time at the cottage. I share my life with them and tell them about things I'm learning about too. #DojoChat
A5 Have conversations with your students. Not about school. Not about academics. All about their interests. Eating lunch with your students is a great time to learn more about them and for them to learn about you. #dojochat
A5: We start every day with #morningmeeting. We often share about things that are going on in our lives. My Ss love hearing what my 2 yr old is up to ☺️☺️ Ss get share time and so do I. #dojochat
A5: bring your hobbies, interests and family pictures into your classroom decoration. During class meeting on Mondays, we share what we did over the weekend and i make sure that I share too! #DojoChat
A4: I have a class schedule on the board and put just enough info to tempt them. I also like to play hangman or scramble with a word that introduces the topic of a fun activity. #DojoChat
I’m honest. It’s important for me to be a role model, but it’s ALSO important for them to see that a good person can still make mistakes. Yes, they know that I’m notorious for losing everything. Yes, they call me out on it. 😂 🤣 @burgessdave#dojochat
One of my favorite examples of this is when I use the @PapaJohns vs. @pizzahut debate my wife and I have and how we meet in the middle with @dominos (though dominos has now become our favorite) in order to teach compromise. #dojochat
In reply to
@aplin_classroom, @PapaJohns, @pizzahut, @dominos
A5. We start our week with Good News and Show and tell. I always share with my kids. I try go to baseball games, birthday parties, ect. Being involved in Cub Scouts also helps me stay closely connected. #tlap#dojochat
A5: a way I show my personality is through a good “dad joke” - I like to share animal jokes after rounds of quizlet live. My fav....”knock knock, who’s there? Owls. Owls who? Yes, yes they do” #DojoChat
We are at work too high of a % of our lives to unplug ourselves when we walk in the building. I try to add more of myself to what I do all the time. #Rapport#Relationships#Human! #DojoChat#tlap
A5 I just refuse to spend all day in a roomful of strangers! Goal #1 in school year is to build relationships. I show them that I am still learning, and that I make mistakes too! #DojoChat
Q6: The #tlap mindset: Look at the world around us & ask, “How Can I use that?” How can you use upcoming events, recent news, latest tech, student hobbies, viral sensations, etc to engage & HOOK student interest? #DojoChat Let’s hear examples!
A5: In the classroom I loved sharing my favorite read aloud a for our novels, bringing in mystery readers from my life & theirs, and sitting/laying down to read during SSR. Watching them slowly creep closer to see what I was reading or just be nearby made my heart melt #dojochat
A5: When we do our responsive circle in the morning, I participate with the Ss and answer the question of the day too! They love getting to know my interests outside of school. Relationships are the heart of learning! Show them you care! #Dojochat
Q5: I want students to graduate not just knowing my curriculum; I want them to know ME, as well! How do/can you add more of YOURSELF (hobbies, interest, passions, personality) to your class? Why is this powerful for you AND them? #DojoChat
A5: Share your hobbies with them! We made these cool rocks at writing camp! I love owls and creating! Sharing stories about our families and pets. #tlap#dojochat
My high school math teacher used to play the song "Tell me something good" and we would all share good news at the beginning of the class. That has stuck with me 11 years later. #dojochat
I have been using the QBall (dodgeball with a microphone) to throw around the room and answer our warm up and end of note questions. Students love throwing the ball and giving answers! #dojochat@ERobbPrincipal@misskoplin@ToddRisser@KGT_Educator
A5 my Ks ask me all sorts of (sometimes very) personal Questions 😂 but I love sharing bits of my life. This year Ss has to arrange my life in chronological order during our timeline unit! It was a hit. #dojochat
A5: I was going use a pizza joke in this chat, but it’s too cheesy. They say they can’t stand my dad jokes, but I know they secretly love them. #dojochat
Q6: The #tlap mindset: Look at the world around us & ask, “How Can I use that?” How can you use upcoming events, recent news, latest tech, student hobbies, viral sensations, etc to engage & HOOK student interest? #DojoChat Let’s hear examples!
