HERE WE GO! Q1: We are going to start strong tonight, #tlap, and give grace to our students around the country during times of tragedy. #letstudentsspeak
Hi #tlap peeps, Tara -admin in Kansas.
Stoked to join you all.
Missed my workout tonight but ready to flex my edumuscles with some S-voice! Let’s do this thing @RebeccaCoda & @RickJetter !💪🏻💥
Thanks @HeckAwesome 🤗
HERE WE GO! Q1: We are going to start strong tonight, #tlap, and give grace to our students around the country during times of tragedy. #letstudentsspeak
A1: Students have started using their voices in that there needs to be something done. That they have just as much of a voice as others in change. #tlap
A1: For me, the biggest takeaway is that students do have a voice...their opinions vary, but their passion shows that we need to be listening as well as guiding and supporting.
#tlap
HERE WE GO! Q1: We are going to start strong tonight, #tlap, and give grace to our students around the country during times of tragedy. #letstudentsspeak
A1 Students have a lot of heart and have a wealth of information. Learning is all about them. We need to have constant discussions and involve them in the process. We need to collaborate and create partnerships to empower leadership/autonomy/citizenship. Ss are strong! #TLAP
HERE WE GO! Q1: We are going to start strong tonight, #tlap, and give grace to our students around the country during times of tragedy. #letstudentsspeak
A1: Watching this from abroad, it's interesting to see how some viewpoints want to squash #stuvoice in times of tragedy. #Letstudentsspeak becomes even more critical in an era where listening for understanding is forgotten. #tlap
A1 - Our future as a nation is dependent on our generation of young people. They inspire people with how articulate they are and their willingness to be risk takers. The team concept they bring is also a huge motivating factor to get others involved. #tlap
A1 Our school@participated in the #NationalSchoolWalkout on Friday and each student chose a purpose for their walkout. It was a powerful way for them to let school and community know what was important to them! #tlap
A1 The acts of Ss is the wake of all the tragedies has shown that they are invested in the future, they do care about others, and they are intelligent and well spoken. Student voice needs to be supported, not stifled if we want to empower them #tlap
A1: reminds us all that Ss’ voices matter. They have opinions, concerns, ideas NOT fed to them by someone else. Helps us make learning more meaningful to all. #tlap
A1: Students have been empowered via social media. That is a great tool for the students to use, whether in the face of a tragedy or just in a general learning sense. We must continue to teach students responsible use of these tools. #tlap
A1: Students speaking out about issues that are impacting their lives make a huge impact on their parents and in turn the government. When the children raise their voices, the adults listen closer because we love them, and they are our future. #TLAP
A1 Student voice has made others take notice. They have demonstrated strength and confidence in their ability to shape the future - their future. Very powerful to witness. #tlap
A1: So inspiring to see young people feeling EMPOWERED to stand up and raise their voice. Protest is one of the purist forms of patriotism. We were freaking founded on it. #tlap#NotFakeNews
A1: I think the most powerful part is that people are respectfully listening to Ss! For a long time, teenagers have been written off because they are young and inexperienced, but today their voice matters. This gives Ss confidence to continue speaking out and standing up. #tlap
A1: The nation is listening to students and taking action because of THEM! We recently upgraded our security district-wide because we #LetStudentsSpeak#TLAP
A1: I think that students are utilizing their voice now and really making an impact on our world as we know it. I love that they are exercising freedom of speech. #tlap
A1: Ss have been given the opportunity to share their voice & the nation is listening! Through tragedy, S voice is influencing much needed change!! #tlap
A1: Our high school students have spoke up that something needs to be done. They organized a vigil for the last school shooting and approached it with such maturity. Letting them speak and hearing their voice was so powerful! #tlap
A1: I am constantly in awe of the resiliency of our students. No matter what terrible event happens, our students stand up to it, and become stronger because of it. #tlap
A1: Students are showing that they have passion for a purpose, based on their experiences. They want something done. They aren’t saying they have all the answers, but they are asking for adults to help them move forward with intention. #tlap#LetStudentsSpeak
A1: Students are feeling a sense of empowerment like never before— an empowerment that is allowing them to see that systems can be changed and that they have the capability of being the change makers. #tlap
HERE WE GO! Q1: We are going to start strong tonight, #tlap, and give grace to our students around the country during times of tragedy. #letstudentsspeak
A1 #tlap
There is something good, and pure, and honest about student voice. It speaks truth to power in ways that can be both jarring and impactful. I, for one, cannot ignore their plea or their message.
A1: I think Ss have shown that politics aside, banding together for a common cause can bring about awareness and potential change. This is not the 1st movement driven by the power of Student voice. #tlap
A1: It has shown our country that empowering students can lead to powerful movements. Students can lead and advocate for themselves. Society always says "When will kids these days learn?" Listen to the news, I think we see them learning! #tlap
A1: Ss are learning and observing that even the smallest voice can be heard when tragedy strikes. Ss are realizing that they can make themselves heard in peaceful ways. Thousands of individual voices are powerful when joined together for one purpose. #tlap#LetStudentsSpeak
A1: As a mom of HS & MS daughters, I support their right to voice their opinions and stand up for what they believe in. The key is to have open conversations about what is happening. By making Ss feel like they don’t matter- we are making it worse. #tlap#LoveLiteracyLearning
#tlap Students are now taking action rather than waiting for someone to do something about violence. Student voice has evolved into a movement outside the classroom.
A1: It has shown our country that empowering students can lead to powerful movements. Students can lead and advocate for themselves. Society always says "When will kids these days learn?" Listen to the news, I think we see them learning! #tlap

A1: I couldn’t be more impressed with the classy voice that has ERUPTED. Even at my own school. Take a stand with class. They did & I am proud. #tlap#leadLap
A1 In times of tragedy and controversy, students learn that speaking their minds will not always be easy. They learn to have meaningful discourse, and through it, learn to differentiate between opponents and enemies. Skills we need in future adults. #tlap
A1: Ss speaking up and sharing how they feel is getting others to listen! They have such power in their voices and they are using it to inspire change #TLAP
A1: Student VOICE is critical. Students taking ownership to BE THE CHANGE! That is our ultimate goal of educators... to CREATE global citizens who ADVOCATE for what is RIGHT! #tlap#JoyfulLeaders
A1: it’s empowering to Ss speaking up about gun violence/issues in this country. A difference can be made if they are persistent. I wrote a blog piece about about the ages of the founding fathers during the DOI. History can help us understand how differences can be made. #tlap
A1: Ss have found their voice, but even more so they are finding perseverance & a passion to be heard. When we aren’t listening, they continue to use their voice. They are using their voice to build the world that they want! If you can’t get excited about hat, step aside! #tlap
A1: Those kids are using their fear and concern to be courageous and relentless on ensuring that shootings like the one in Parkland don’t happen again. #tlap
#tlap and I think social media is the game changer in the most recent movement. These kids are using the most effective tool they have in a way that we couldn't have imagined in the past.
A1: I think it's great that students, many of whom are too young to vote, are civically engaged. They serve as role models to what responsible citizens should be doing. #tlap
HERE WE GO! Q1: We are going to start strong tonight, #tlap, and give grace to our students around the country during times of tragedy. #letstudentsspeak
A1:
Student voices have brought a new edge in light of the tragedies. They are stepping out and going real world with what they’ve been taught. The result is the conversations have continued. Though some have tried, there’s not as much blame on “partisan tactics.” #tlap
A1 - Our future as a nation is dependent on our generation of young people. They inspire people with how articulate they are and their willingness to be risk takers. The team concept they bring is also a huge motivating factor to get others involved. #tlap
A1 We all have an opinion and Ss are no different.
We must listen to them and create a space (school/class culture) where they feel welcome to express their own beliefs-not that of their parents or anyone else. They have a voice and we need to hear it. #tlap
A1 student voice and choice was evident at our exposition evening, which was incredibly powerful. Kids were so empowered! Read more about it here https://t.co/bXnenFEIFc#tlap
Great connection! Just proves the point further that we need to give Ss the opportunity to #LetStudentsSpeak - not just about major issues but all things relating to their lives. #TLAP
Good administrators are committed to these three things:
1)Supporting teachers
2)Connecting with kids
3)Building positive culture
(And when they’re doing the first two... it goes a long way toward taking care of the 3rd one!)
A1: It has enabled students to understand that they can influence change. They can make a difference. Too often students come to school and aren't given a chance to express who they really are. That in itself is a tragedy. Give them opportunities to spread kindness! #tlap
A1. Ss do have voices and they need to speak. Parents need to talk with their kids at home about guns and shootings occurring in schools! Ss have opinions, and for their social emotional well being they need to speak to someone about issues and problems! #tlap
A1 Ss are opening up about their feelings, the impact of these events, joining together to support one another, or a cause, not being afraid to speak up #tlap#LetStudentsSpeak
A1: reminds us all that Ss’ voices matter. They have opinions, concerns, ideas NOT fed to them by someone else. Helps us make learning more meaningful to all. #tlap
A1: If we continue to allow students a chance to speak their mind, give them opportunities to come together and constructively discuss change, and keep an open mind listening to what they have to say, we can support our future! #TLAP
A1: Students have been empowered via social media. That is a great tool for the students to use, whether in the face of a tragedy or just in a general learning sense. We must continue to teach students responsible use of these tools. #tlap
#tlap And I hope we Ts can stand up to ensure that those voices continue to be heard over the loud wallets of lobbyist and other specialist interest groups. You can't have a 2nd amend w/o a 1st.
A1: Students speaking out about issues that are impacting their lives make a huge impact on their parents and in turn the government. When the children raise their voices, the adults listen closer because we love them, and they are our future. #TLAP
Week 6, Pic 1 of theme, “RELATIONSHIPS” #TeachersWithCameras photo challenge. Captured trust & rapport established during conversation. Watched these two Ss have what appeared to be a very meaningful chat. They were attentive & engaged. #xplap#tlap#ditchbook#edchat
A1 I strongly believe, no matter the circumstance students deserve a voice. I had a hard time seeing students get blasted just for having an opinion. You can disagree or agree.. students (everyone) still deserve to be heard and valued. #tlap
A1 Student voice has made others take notice. They have demonstrated strength and confidence in their ability to shape the future - their future. Very powerful to witness. #tlap
A1b - When we say that education is the most important driver for success, young people are showing that to be true. It’s our job to always push the concept of “anything is possible!” #tlap
A!: I wrote NBC a letter as a child. They moved Adam 12 to 7:30 and that was my bedtime. I told them this was stupid. Mom yelled at me, my scribe (school teacher sister) said I should say it. They sent me a form letter postcard and moved the time back to 7. I was so proud! #tlap
Regarding the issue at hand, the response to mass shootings, we need to be aware of our own biases and consider which Ss actually NEED the safe spaces to express their opinions (not that of their parents or anyone else.) It may be the Ss whose opinion differs from yours. #tlap
A1 We all have an opinion and Ss are no different.
We must listen to them and create a space (school/class culture) where they feel welcome to express their own beliefs-not that of their parents or anyone else. They have a voice and we need to hear it. #tlap

A1) It demonstrates that young people’s voices can be even more powerful than adults’. That they’re capable of staying focused and effecting change. #tlap#stuvoice#LetStudentsSpeak
#tlap A1 Student voice is not something teachers/leaders give students. It's not voice is it is given. In the past students waited for permission to take action. Now student voices are recognized and students are taking action over injustice.
They're also our best shot for a better today. I've said this numerous times, but I have far more hope and faith in this generation of kids than I have in the older ones #tlap
A1: It's unfortunate, but this generation has had to grow up hearing, and seeing the devastation caused by these mass shootings. They have had enough, and they know that there needs to be something done. They don't deserve to feel scared going to school. #TLAP
A1. Ss do have voices and they need to speak. Parents need to talk with their kids at home about guns and shootings occurring in schools! Ss have opinions, and for their social emotional well being they need to speak to someone about issues and problems! #tlap
A1b They also can learn how connection and collaboration with more experienced people is crucial. Remember the adults who helped organize #MarchForOurLives#tlap
A1- Ss often have a better perspective then the adults do...we just need to take the time to listen and be open to their thoughts, ideas, hopes and dreams #tlap
Q1: Allowing students to have a voice around these topics helps them understand that removing the symptoms without curing the disease, will not solve the problem. They become critical thinkers and deep problem solvers when allowed to explore such topics. #LetStudentsSpeak#TLAP
HERE WE GO! Q1: We are going to start strong tonight, #tlap, and give grace to our students around the country during times of tragedy. #letstudentsspeak
A1: If we continue to allow students a chance to speak their mind, give them opportunities to come together and constructively discuss change, and keep an open mind listening to what they have to say, we can support our future! #TLAP
A1: Students have been empowered to do something that most of us didn’t, they choose to have a voice to move the conversation forward on gun laws! #tlap
A1: Ss do not sugarcoat - they speak their truth and their desire for the future. For many, #studentvoice is the inner voice that has been silenced. #letstudentsspeak#tlap
A2: Here in KY, we have plenty of issues going on. Our pensions are being jeopardized and it is scary. BUT that's not why we have walked out... We walked out because our Ss are already getting an education on the bare minimum. Enough is a enough. Our kids deserve better. #TLAP
@burgessdave@burgess_shelley At some point, you should consider hosting your own #tlap conference. All the DBC authors could do breakout sessions. As my 6 year old son would say, "that would be epic!"
A1 Ss voice is imperative during these tragedies! They need to feel supported! They need to be given a safe platform to share their ideas, and they need to be respected! These Ss are our future! #tlap#champforkids
HERE WE GO! Q1: We are going to start strong tonight, #tlap, and give grace to our students around the country during times of tragedy. #letstudentsspeak
A2 When we were “at odds” over our contract here, students and parents spoke up big time. I think it had a big impact on moving this forward. If nothing else, it reminds us all WHY we’re here in the first place. #tlap
When guided properly, and given time, yes. Early on, you will see some youthful, knee-jerk reactions, but to get past these, they have to engage! #tlap
A2 great question. They can demand the best education possible and support their teachers. Unfortunately too many still see teachers and admin as us and them. I love hearing stories of admin joining the Ts and if the Ss join too...wow #tlap
@burgessdave@burgess_shelley At some point, you should consider hosting your own #tlap conference. All the DBC authors could do breakout sessions. As my 6 year old son would say, "that would be epic!"
A1. Student voice provides meaningful insights to help us empathize, exposes the vulnerability of the status quo, and gives us hope for a brighter future. #tlap
A2: Here in KY, we have plenty of issues going on. Our pensions are being jeopardized and it is scary. BUT that's not why we have walked out... We walked out because our Ss are already getting an education on the bare minimum. Enough is a enough. Our kids deserve better. #TLAP
A2 showing their support and gratitude with their words of encouragement! Seeing the bigger picture that those teachers are walking out for the benefit of the students themselves #tlap#LetStudentsSpeak
A2 Teachers are fighting for justice, equity and respect. Students often want the same thing. We need strong voices to learn from each other, to unite for learning, for heart and kindness, for community-building. We are there to make an impact and life better for others. #TLAP
A1: Children are speaking out and telling us they’re afraid to go to school. School should be THE safe haven for every child. We protect celebrities, politicians, and our money every day in this country. When will we take serious measures to protect our children?! #tlap#masdtlap
A1: I think so much frustration stems from the fact that they are being allowed to be heard or are being overlooked when they do voice themselves. Wasn’t that the punk movement? #tlap@amyburvall
A2: Wages and benefits are real issues in our society. If students share their understanding of the importance of the education they are taking part in, their voice could be the one that gets heard and change will occur #tlap
A2: We need the perspective of the student, as well as the rest of the whole child. Being a student is only part of who a child is. They are all unique and can give adults insight on what they need to help them become leaders and contributors. #tlap#LetStudentsSpeak
A1 My heart breaks for these tragedies and it is scary for teachers and Ss. Let them know you care, support them and your number one priority is keeping them safe. Most important though, is letting them talk and share concerns and opinions. #tlap
A2 having teachers walk off the job, means we are either disgruntled or neglected. Yet if the students stood up and voiced any opinion it might sway those states toward action. #tlap
A2: I hope they believe that the Ts are doing this for Ss benefit as well.
However, if Ss don't, we need to hear them thoughtfully. It would be wrong to hold them up as props on issues we do agree with them on and then diminish their voice here. #tlap
What ARE they saying?
A2 - While it’s easy for adults to show a high level of cynicism towards education, I see everyday how much kids appreciate great teachers. They want to be challenged, inspired, and be given hope. It’s what they are demonstrating and proving to others. #tlap
A2: Students can be the greatest advocates for teachers. When positive relationships are established built on trust, empathy, transparency, consistency and compassion, the power of student voice in support of their teachers can be extremely powerful. #tlap
When guided properly, and given time, yes. Early on, you will see some youthful, knee-jerk reactions, but to get past these, they have to engage! #tlap
A2: In order for Ss to develop their voice as responsible advocates for change, they need to see what it looks like! Empower Ss to share their voice allows them to have ownership for their own learning and experiences. #tlap
A1- Ss often have a better perspective then the adults do...we just need to take the time to listen and be open to their thoughts, ideas, hopes and dreams #tlap
A2: The best gift to receive as a teacher is appreciation from your students. Ts are not walking out because they think their job is unimportant but because they know it is the most important of all. Having Ss speak out on our behalf, acknowledging the role we play is huge! #tlap
A2: As long as students speak their truth about their Ts, and not what they are told to say or feel compelled to say, their voice will remain powerful and create positive impact. #letstudentsspeak#tlap
A2: When Ss speak up about the conditions of their schools, lack of supplies, how much they value their Ts that can have a great impact, esp. on their own parents. #tlap
#tlap A2 Students can be a voice for teacher when teachers can’t speak for themselves. Student can support teachers in public demonstrations and social media forums.
A2: Too often we underestimate our students. We dismiss their voices because we don't think they understand the issues at a deep level. If we are honest with them about the issues they will contribute a powerful voice. #tlap#LetStudentsSpeak
A1: it encourages ss to use their voice to speak up. This can help them speak up in other ways as well, like, “hey, can I show you how I learned this in a different way?” #tlap
A2: It does get Ss to be aware of situations they might not otherwise pay attention to, and these events help Ss grow and gain insight into adult events that will directly impact them. My HS Ss are paying attention! #tlap#LetStudentsSpeak
A2: This can happen with student support. I have seen images of students supporting teachers in various walkouts. Teachers need to be acknowledged as the professionals they are and be compensated accordingly. Many states require advanced degrees, but don’t pay for them. #tlap
A2: We know our students, as well as many parents, know their own children. If students see and know that we care, they will do anything for you, including sticking up for you in times of need. #tlap
A2: in the simplest form it shows a solidarity in using our voices to impact change, but Ss could help amplify Ts’ voices by lending theirs to the cause, even in something as simple as starting conversations at home and with friends #tlap
A2: When the students raise their voices, the world listens. How can anyone look their child in the eyes and say that they don't deserve the best of everything funneled into their education? #TLAP
A2: Ss are the voice from school to home and the community. When Ss realize you're walking out for them, they can explain that to their families. Having Ss support can really get others listening! #tlap
A2: Ss will speak their mind and show support for Ts when they feel supported. Parents are the same way- we are all invested together for the same goal: student success. Without Ts- where would any of us be? #TLAP#LoveLiteracyLearning
A2: Too often we underestimate our students. We dismiss their voices because we don't think they understand the issues at a deep level. If we are honest with them about the issues they will contribute a powerful voice. #tlap#LetStudentsSpeak
A2 Without reading other responses yet, I don't like involving students in union issues. When we are with them, we are with them. Fight for rights later. Just my opinion. #tlap
A2- Not sure we should ask Ss to get involved with these battles (contract pay etc) it feels like we are putting them in a bad spot, but it is easier for me to say in southern NY where we are paid well. #tlap
A2: I think our districts have become less focused on the Ss and more about $ and scores. If we #LetStudentsSpeak to admins/board, maybe they will listen and remember why we do what we do. #tlap
A2: students care about their teachers. Bringing voices together creates a strong unity and coalition, hence more power to affect positive change #tlap
A2 I think student voices help remind the public that teachers don’t create a product that can be distilled to something that is most cost effective or simplest form, but a living, growing, complex human. And that developing humans should be taken seriously. #tlap
A2. Our Ss need to play a key role in demanding what they want for their education, who they wnat, what $ needs to be paid for educ., $ for wages, --We are fighting here in KY!!!! Public Educ. vs. the startup of charter schools! #tlap
A2: I hope they believe that the Ts are doing this for Ss benefit as well.
However, if Ss don't, we need to hear them thoughtfully. It would be wrong to elevate S voices on issues we do agree with them on and then diminish their voice here. #tlap
What ARE they saying?
Makes me wonder if we put too much weight on voting as one of the highest callings to being a responsible citizen. It’s so much more than that. Though it is undeniable that students being future voters gives them more leverage. #tlap
A2 Ss voices could give perspective to the negotiations that lead to these walkouts. Students know many of the things that are really needed in schools. Prevent walkouts in the first place! #tlap
#tlap A2 This is not a simple question. If student voice is honest, genuine, sincere, and unbiased, would the majority support a raise for all teachers? Remember, true student voice isn't political, coached, biased, scripted, or a parroting of the adult voice.
A2: having open and honest conversation w/ Ss is really important. B/c they have to know that it is ok to voice yourself when there is injustice. #tlap
Couple this testimonial with all of the resources not available or the reality of class sizes or teacher turnover, only the willfully deaf can claim to not hear. #tlap#letstudentsspeak
A2 the walking educators & talking students have the same goals. They both want an education for kids that is innovative, compassionate & meets student & educators learning needs. #tlap
A2 Who understands the schools better than the Ss? They can speak to conditions. And trusting that the Ts have built relationships Ss will trust that the action is in their best interest. Let’s not forget Ss are soon to be voters too - very powerful voices! #tlap
A2 all voices matter and should be heard! What better way to lead to change than by hearing from those who are directly impacted by us day in and day out. They need to share their experiences! #tlap
A2: When the students raise their voices, the world listens. How can anyone look their child in the eyes and say that they don't deserve the best of everything funneled into their education? #TLAP
A2: When students complain about having long-term subs trying to teach a class, overcrowded classrooms, or textbooks with their parents' names, it seems more altruistic instead of "teachers venting" #tlap
A2 #TLAP WOW! That could be a game changer. Can you imagine if STUDENTS started making demands for adequate facilities, materials, books?? Who could deny a child who is requesting tools for something as fundamental as the opportunity to learn?? And THIS in the UNITED STATES!!
A2:
Ss can be a powerful voice. They know how hard Ts work. They also can attest to the deplorable conditions bldgs and resources are in (thinking about OK). They’re also observant. They know who puts in the bare minimum vs whatever it takes. Ss can speak to the quality. #tlap
A2: Students can highlight the issues they’re facing as learners; outdated resources, high class sizes, combined classes with no subs, tired teachers (😭), and advocate for a change in working conditions and class environment so they can be more successful, too! #TLAP
A1: recent media coverage of students using their voice has been such a beautiful example of courage and movement that will be an incredible example for a generation and I’m sure so many more to come #tlap
HERE WE GO! Q1: We are going to start strong tonight, #tlap, and give grace to our students around the country during times of tragedy. #letstudentsspeak
#tlap A2 This is not a simple question. If student voice is honest, genuine, sincere, and unbiased, would the majority support a raise for all teachers? Remember, true student voice isn't political, coached, biased, scripted, or a parroting of the adult voice.
A2 Ss have every right to express concerns about the treatment of their Ts! If we have done our job well, then Ss have developed a relationship in which they know we care about them and in turn they care about us! #relationshipsmatter#tlap#LetStudentsSpeak#champforkids
@burgessdave@burgess_shelley At some point, you should consider hosting your own #tlap conference. All the DBC authors could do breakout sessions. As my 6 year old son would say, "that would be epic!"
A2 Students are in a position to share the positivity of Education from their point of view with the community, and they are the recipients of education #tlap
A2 - A multitude of voices add weight to an argument. The more diverse the voices, the more powerful. The American republic is founded on the idea that voices matter. #tlap
A2: Ss and their families defending and speaking on behalf of teachers would not only be impactful, it would shine light on the different perspectives involved. What a great reminder of why we do what we do.
#TLAP#LetStudentsSpeak
It is on the agenda for planning! Right, W @wenders88 ?! We are going to ROCK this thing! All of the PIRATES together = dream come TRUE!

A2: Some teachers are heading to Denver to protest this Friday in Colorado! We had a walk in last week to let people know about the issues and students stood with us on the road! They need and want to be part of the conversation! #studentvoice#tlap
A2 Who understands the schools better than the Ss? They can speak to conditions. And trusting that the Ts have built relationships Ss will trust that the action is in their best interest. Let’s not forget Ss are soon to be voters too - very powerful voices! #tlap
A2: Again, circle of viewpoints has been interesting. In certain states, Ts are being chastised for using their voices. We want Ss to feel empowered, but what happens when Ts are being prevented from feeling empowered by elected officials? Our collective voices must unite! #tlap
A2: It can’t be about what we want/need, it has to be about kids. Who better to talk about kids than kids! They know best what it is like to sit through class in 2018. They experience what it is like to put resources towards testing instead of SEL, counselors, etc. #tlap
A2 all voices matter and should be heard! What better way to lead to change than by hearing from those who are directly impacted by us day in and day out. They need to share their experiences! #tlap
A2: At times, it takes the idea of losing something in order to see its true value. If students voice the impact teachers have in their lives, it can reveal teacher value to those in charge of making changes and solidify value in the heart of students.#LetStudentsSpeak#TLAP
A2: Transparency can go a long way with kids. If student understand the why behind something, they quickly become invested & passionate and naturally want to do what they can to make a positive impact. #tlap
I think there are things that go unsaid that limit the message. We stand in the gap for families. We don't have promises for EVERY student. We can't figure out every learning challenge. But we're trying despite how impossible it seems. #tlap
✨A2: YOU MIGHT WANT TO LISTEN. Students tell it like it is. They have great things to say and can sway opinions in positive ways! They deserve a voice too, after all these issues impact them the most. #TLAP#LetStudentsSpeak✨
A3: In order for a school to really be THRIVING, student voice is vital. Students should have a voice in what their classes are, how they learn best, what extracurriculars are offered, etc. #tlap
I really agree with this-I’ve heard a lot lately, “what do they know? They’re kids! I’ll listen to them when they ....” Student Voice often isn’t being valued nor students given the respect they deserve. They are very often underestimated!! #tlap
A2: Too often we underestimate our students. We dismiss their voices because we don't think they understand the issues at a deep level. If we are honest with them about the issues they will contribute a powerful voice. #tlap#LetStudentsSpeak
A3: Students are the heartbeat of school culture! When they feel their voice has been heard, and the see the impact of their shared perspectives, they (like teachers) have ownership of the community and will rise above and beyond expectations to keep the heartbeat alive! #tlap
A2: When the students raise their voices, the world listens. How can anyone look their child in the eyes and say that they don't deserve the best of everything funneled into their education? #TLAP
A3: Students should always have a voice in their school; in my school, I started a student council, have students contribute to newsletter, anything to give their views and ideas a platform. We need to promote student #leadership#tlap
A2: perception is everything and the wider lense we have the better. Ss voice can tell the stories of the classroom that not everyone sees. Their support for their teachers would not only impact culture immediately in their own school but huge life lessons would be learned #tlap
A3: we have a 2nd grade students voice as a voicemail message currently! Sends a clear message to callers that we care about our kids and their voices! #tlap
A3: we have to teach students to identify their learning style and then be advocates for their learning. We should be open to letting them show their understanding in their own way #tlap
A3: Student voice should be the map to any success in a school. Listen to what they want more of or less of. How can we make their ideas a reality? I don't want to go somewhere that never listens to feedback. Why would our Ss? #tlap
A3: This seems like a trick question. The Ss are the customers in our schools. Customer satisfaction should be something we keep in the forefront & should guide how we progress, change, & adapt. Without Ss, we don't have a job. Period. #tlap#LetStudentsSpeak
A3 - Everything! We are at a crossroads in education. People keep talking about choice, engagement, empowerment and other important words. These only matter when students actually have a voice. #tlap
A3: In order for a school to really be THRIVING, student voice is vital. Students should have a voice in what their classes are, how they learn best, what extracurriculars are offered, etc. #tlap
A3 The world class Schools have their students "advertise" or and highlight their success stories. The difference between world class and regular schools, the regular schools don't voice or share their success stories. #tlap
A3: Just like admin, teachers, parents, and community members, students are important stakeholders in the school, and they should have many opportunities to participate in deciding what happens at a school.
#TLAP
A3: Student input, along with family, faculty, and community input, leads to better programs, desire to attend, excitement about education, and a growing, positive culture with NO limits! #TLAP
A3: A common theme in successful schools across the country is that they are student-driven. Students should have a platform to share their ideas. It's their education, not ours. #tlap
A3: We serve our students. Listening to our students’ needs and interests encourages buy in and everyone has a richer experience. #LetStudentsSpeak#TLAP
A3: Service has been a pillar of my career. In the classroom, I was always looking for feedback from my Ss. I wanted to improve my teaching in order to improve their learning. Now as a coach, I try to listen to my Ts to how we can improve as a school to better serve our Ss. #tlap
A3 I think bridging the gap with technology could be a key area. Would love to have students teaching teachers and parents about technology (apps, websites, social media). #tlap
A3: It should certainly help influence various components and give them opportunities to express themselves. I am also thinking of when Facebook "forced" all users to the Timeline model and now billions of people use it - but still allows voice. It is a balancing act! #tlap
A2: Students can use tt as a model how to “fight” for what they believe they deserve, whether it is to feel safer, for programs, or better food in the cafeteria. Ss need to believe that the end justifies the mean and to never stop using their voice! #tlap
A3: student voice shows that a school is valuing a growth mindset, that Ss are making real-world connections, that the education is more than what you can learn from a textbook. Essentially the presence or absence of student voice reflects on Ts and admin at a school #tlap
@MsShute Have you gotten a chance to read this yet? Just finished last week and have already implemented a few changes. Completely energizing and a MUST read for every teacher! #bethewildcard#masdtlap#tlap
A3: Student VOICE should be ECHOED throughout the school. Students should be modeling expectations for one another and setting the culture & climate ALONG with Ts and Admin. Ss thoughts/creations should FILL the halls! We are #BetterTogether#KidsDeserveIt#tlap@RickJetter
A3: If you truly believe that schools are made for the students, student voice needs to be a primary factor in your decision making...in the classroom and at the school site!
#tlap
A3 We don't have schools without kids. All decisions, mission/vision should be built with students. Flexible seating, authentic learning, differentiation, all aspects can be built with students to keep helping empower their voice, their learning. Let this help thrive! #TLAP
A3: Students are the heartbeat of school culture! When they feel their voice has been heard, and the see the impact of their shared perspectives, they (like teachers) have ownership of the community and will rise above and beyond expectations to keep the heartbeat alive! #tlap
A3: Practically all of it. Usually we leave students out of meetings that are meant to address THEIR needs instead of just including them. Why not invite students to EVERY staff and board meeting? Not as exhibits, but as active participants. #tlap#letstudentsspeak
Yes! Relationships are so important! It's incredible how much ground you gain by simply creating strong relationships between students and staff. #tlap
A3: Schools are for students. Schools only thrive if students are thriving. Give them a voice in what the mission and vision of the school are. Build in time to meet with them, celebrate them, recognize them and provide platforms for them to explore their passions. #tlap
A3: Ss are the most important people that step foot on our campus each day! Their voice should be heard & it should play a role in the decisions being made for them! Also, they should have an active role in sharing your school’s story! #tlap
A3: Students should always have a voice in their school; in my school, I started a student council, have students contribute to newsletter, anything to give their views and ideas a platform. We need to promote student #leadership#tlap
A3: When a customer receives great service, they are often a walking billboard for the company. Our Ss can be our walking billboard reflecting the awesome service that we provide. #tlap
A3 a thriving school would be one where all students are learning. When students have voice & choice they WANT to learn & will show up that way. Parents will be on board because their kids WANT to learn. Staff would WANT to be there because their students WANT to learn. #tlap
A3: Kids need to have opportunities to share how they best learn, what makes them feel safe (or unsafe) and to show their learning in various ways. They need us to conform to them. #tlap
A2: Too often we underestimate our students. We dismiss their voices because we don't think they understand the issues at a deep level. If we are honest with them about the issues they will contribute a powerful voice. #tlap#LetStudentsSpeak
A3: Each customer/student is unique. In order for a school to bribe, We must know their passions and provide opportunities for them to have a voice and own their learning. #tlap
I am convinced that school environment is shaped by the behaviors, attitudes, and beliefs of the people who spend time there – both adults and students. #Tlap
A3: A few ways to involve students: Have them serve on interview panels for new teachers/admin, let them help run school social media accounts, have them give new students/families tours of the school #tlap
A3: This is so important. It should be balanced. Our voices are powerful tools and it comes with great responsibility. Have you experienced when Ss love their schools though? Something tells me they feel a sense of belonging because they have choice, voice, & safety. #tlap
A3: what Role? The lead for sure! My 4th grs created art that represented themselves, through a self-portrait drawing & a poem abt how they view themselves. Was so amazing & empowering. #tlap
A3 Relationships. It’s a two way street. In order for students to feel like they have a place at school and truly belong, they NEED to have a say! #tlap
#tlap As a Principal, I created a student advisory board. They met with me once a month or more (as needed). Student voice played a big role the administration of the school. We learned to lead with the students in mind.
A3: Student voice should play a huge role in a thriving school. If students feel that their voice matters, they will have a sense of pride for their school. This pride will yield positive results. #tlap
A3: We have to listen to our students and their opinions. Take them seriously. I don't know any kid who doesn't want to learn and be successful. When they tell us something isn't working, we have to work to fix it. #tlap
A3: Student voice in a thriving school looks like soliciting their feedback, meaningful discussions on their learning, and authentic leadership roles in the school. #TLAP#letstudentsspeak
A3 Ss should be listened to and honored. It doesn't mean we need to agree with or to everything they say, but we can give acceptance to their right to HAVE a voice. #tlap
A3: “students’ school” and “students’ classroom” - believe it and live it! Let them help create/establish school community, listen to what they like about their school and learning experiences #TLAP
I saw recently where a student in Oklahoma was issued a textbook that Blake Shelton has used in like first grade-hopefully Fake News- bit if not, WOW, on multiple levels!!! 😮🙁🙁#tlap
They're going to talk about the school one way or the other. If they feel that they're listened to, valued, and have purpose in the school, they're way more likely to be the positive "billboard" #tlap
A3. There should be diversity in student voice. Do we ask ONLY our Student Council or the top-performing students for input? What about those that frequent the office for behavioral issues? Their voice is just as important if not more insightful to create a thriving school. #tlap
A3. In a thriving school, student voice is important, Ss should have voice in varios jobs in school, extra-curriculars, lessons, activities, book-clubs, dances, twitter chats, and parent engagement activities that the school puts on. #tlap
A3 - Everything! We are at a crossroads in education. People keep talking about choice, engagement, empowerment and other important words. These only matter when students actually have a voice. #tlap
A3: Schools don't exist to give adults a job with state benefits. They exist to provide students with meaningful educational experiences. If we lose track of this, we'll lose kids to a nearby charter or private school that'll offer what we won't. #tlap
No clubs? That's a shame too. We had Ss submit in writing why they wanted to be part of student council and chose reps from grades 4-6 for now (K-6 school). Would love to hear about how you run things and what you've done with your kiddos! #tlap
A3: How can we design schools for kids that support their needs & interest w/o their voice? I had a great conversation w/ a 10th grade student today about how she feels Ss only care about grades, not learning. We ended with her thinking about how she would design schools! #tlap
We often judge by the student, rather than by what the student says. Sometimes the most unlikely student will have the radically important perspective. We have to give them a chance to consider and speak. #tlap
Customer feedback is huge in figuring out how to deliver world class championship service. But customer participation is even better. Full participation, instant feedback. Quick turn around. #tlap
A2: Ss will speak their mind and show support for Ts when they feel supported. Parents are the same way- we are all invested together for the same goal: student success. Without Ts- where would any of us be? #TLAP#LoveLiteracyLearning
A3: Not only should students help to identify needs, but they have valid ideas and solutions that should be explored. Allow them to collaborate on those solutions and their investment will ensure commitment to solution. #pbl#servicelearning#tlap
A3: Companies who SERVICE customers are mediocre. Companies who SERVE customers and listen to their customers thrive. Schools need to SERVE their students as much opportunity as possible, which includes listening & giving them voice so they too can thrive.
#TLAP#LetStudentsSpeak
They're going to talk about the school one way or the other. If they feel that they're listened to, valued, and have purpose in the school, they're way more likely to be the positive "billboard" #tlap
A3 As a district admin that plans PD for Ts, I'm often surveying the Ts & EDUs in all our district's elementary schools.
This year, we will survey the Ss, too, and use all results (Ts and Ss) to drive PD planning for next year. *Not only EDU data. #tlap
Q3 #TLAP#LetThemSpeak Um. a BIG ONE! Traditional school settings hear from the few when, in fact, all of our students are likely to need entrepreneurial skill sets that build upon communication, collaboration, and cooperation. These are thought-provoking questions! @RickJetter
A3 The world class Schools have their students "advertise" or and highlight their success stories. The difference between world class and regular schools, the regular schools don't voice or share their success stories. #tlap
A3 Ss are the author of their story, and they have a journey to travel, as educators & stakeholders we are here to support them every step of the way so that they can learn through experiences #tlap
A3: Ss need to know that their voices are being heard and that Ts and administration cares about what they have to say. Schools will thrive when the entire building works collaboratively! #TLAP#LetStudentsSpeak#LoveLiteracyLearning
A3: Ask for feedback about EVERYTHING! I especially try to often ask how the classroom environment is serving their learning, or not, and we problem together to better THEIR classroom. #tlap
Oh! I LOVE the idea of having student tour guides! OK, this is awesome!! Imagine being a new student/family hearing all the great things as a student guides you down the halls - what a great leadership opportunity, too! #tlap#inspired
A3 Ss voice should drive the “products that are on our shelves”. What are their passions, interests, and strengths? This should be what Ss see incorporated into their class and school! Listen and implement their ideas and suggestions! #LetStudentsSpeak#tlap#champforkids
I recently had a student build a steam engine out of LEGOs to understand the impact of th steam engine during the Industrial Revolution. This student loves cars/engines #tlap
If Ss told staff everything that they see and hear, schools might not know what to do with it. What then? Don't get me wrong I agree with you. What if we couldn't pretend we didn't know - at all ! #tlap
Hope you know that #Hamilton has been a huge side discussion among teachers in our #tlap (teach like a pirate!) chat here tonight! So much resonates and is relevant for what/how we teach kids today!
✨A3: You miss 100% of the shots you don't take! If we don't listen to students and let them take a few shots, we are missing out! How will they be our future leaders if we don't allow them the chance now? #TLAP#LetStudentsSpeak✨
Student must KNOW they are liked to do well. Part of liking someone is listening to them. You can't like, if you don't listen. Listen and respond. #tlap
A3: We get them curious by dressing up, decorating a theme, mystery boxes, @breakoutEDU, gamification or any kind of #tlap hook to spark interest!! #ksedchat
Yes, and who said the benefits were existing funds,... I thought it was in the after affects, after you finish you can look back and see all the good you did... #tlap
A3: Schools don't exist to give adults a job with state benefits. They exist to provide students with meaningful educational experiences. If we lose track of this, we'll lose kids to a nearby charter or private school that'll offer what we won't. #tlap
#tlap that is exactly right. But, also, when we serve them well, they are also a reflection of our educational standards. We are not a corporation, but we do help grow a product: productive citizens.
A2) It’s powerful if it feels as if they’re doing it for them. And students need to feel as if the adults have their back, if they were to do the same. #tlap
Customer feedback is huge in figuring out how to deliver world class championship service. But customer participation is even better. Full participation, instant feedback. Quick turn around. #tlap
A4: You have to make sure that there is structure and purpose in the activity that's going on. Model those conversations so students understand the expectations you have. #tlap
A3. Student Voice is vital-
IT is THEIR school, THEIR education- I already graduated from 2nd - it’s there turn now- they should have a voice & choice in how they learn, what they learn- #passions -should be EMPOWERED! We are a family-All my kids voices are MATTER❤️ #tlap
A3: Ss should have a share of the power during decision making. Ss reps should be a part of committees, pd, etc. All ss should be asked to give input on clubs and classes that are offered, how and when they are assessed and taught, what they learn, and culture of school. #tlap
A3 As a district admin that plans PD for Ts, I'm often surveying the Ts & EDUs in all our district's elementary schools.
This year, we will survey the Ss, too, and use all results (Ts and Ss) to drive PD planning for next year. *Not only EDU data. #tlap
A4 I think the challenge lies in learning how to do this and having access to someone who can model it for teachers. Kids love to talk and they have great ideas...their challenge lies in the follow through. #tlap
A3: Student voice is huge! Every 6 Weeks I ask my Ss. Do you think Mrs Seibel Likes you? What do you love about class? What would you change if you could? #tlap
A3. There should be diversity in student voice. Do we ask ONLY our Student Council or the top-performing students for input? What about those that frequent the office for behavioral issues? Their voice is just as important if not more insightful to create a thriving school. #tlap
A4: One must be willing to ask "What if?" and believe in "We can!" Perspective can make or break a mindset for change. Let's give it a go for the long-haul and make it happen! #tlap
A4: Those with fixed mindsets who think we need to keep doing things the way it has always been done which is to simply force every major decision and experience on them instead of giving them a seat at the table. #tlap
A4 - It is a true change in what many of us have been taught. We’ve always thought of the word “teacher” as us. This is incorrect and hurts the process of learning. Students can and are teachers as well. Embrace that concept! #tlap
A4: As always, time! It's so important to make time for these discussions and follow through. Without follow through, it's just another "nice idea" and no sustainable change can happen. #tlap
A4: There are many Ss who have a sense of entitlement about having their voices heard AND followed. We need to teach them to share in appropriate and respectful manners, and then to LISTEN to the other voices in the room. #tlap
A3: Thriving businesses are constantly checking the pulse of their clients, customers, & consumers...those, are our students & we must ALWAYS check the pulse of them to thrive in our field! #tlap
A4: The challenge is that many Ss feel that they have been silenced for so long, they are not trusting of the sincerity when someone really wants to listen. The us vs them. It takes time to establish that relationship, but once you do, you can really make a difference. #tlap
A4 It for sure is a process, but one that is so worth it! It may be slow at first, but the impact makes those challenges worth it! Plus, it gets easier the more they speak up and share their voice! #tlap
You mean, like giving them a second chance or even a third chance on a test. Why not, that really shows grit because they are determined to not only learn but they choose to work hard enough to get it right... #tlap (contemplating this philosophy)
In reply to
@brentcoley, @MrsMullinsClass, @pgilders, @CoriOrlando1, @Wes_Kieschnick, @tbed63, @Scotteach, @tsschmidty, @chaugen, @John_Eick, @ClarksRoom, @rickwormeli2
A4: We, as adults, must be careful not to put our spin on student voice. It can be easy to influence and turn words to meet our needs. That's not the point of student voice. #tlap
A3- We should give student a venue to discuss ways to improve our classes, our schools, our Districts, and truly take what they say to heart. Things are changing at a breakneck pace we need Ss to tell us how we can do better, Be humble enough to listen! #tlap
A4: setting high expectations , norms and consistency must be present. Strong classroom management and a culture of risk taking and growth mindset needs to be established. Lots of practice as well, integrating opportunities wherever possible amongst all your other must do’s #tlap
A4 The biggest change is you can't predesign everything. To truly empower student voice, they need to be active players in their learning and school. Listening to understand is crucial. We need to teach/lead with heart. Enter choices/decisions with an open mind/heart. #TLAP
A4: when encouraging Ss to speak, you have to build a community that promotes trust, honesty, acceptance, open mindedness, respect as well as teaching Ss not to allow their emotions to blind their opinions. #tlap#letstudentsspeak#LoveLiteracyLearning
A4: As a first grade teacher, I have my Ss practice using accountable talk when sharing their voice! This requires them to listen to each other, agree/disagree, and state evidence for their opinion! This is a detailed approach to our 1st grade class conversations! #tlap
A4: Our school has a weekly group for the girls. The boy girl ratio can get lopsided in a small school. Our behavior person runs them. Started with making sure they got heard. then moved it to help them with everyone's perspective. It helped. #tlap
A4: the challenges are taking that first risk, challenging the status quo, and trusting the process. All it takes is one success to build confidence to keep taking risks. #tlap
I’d challenge that. Adult voice is often a lot of those things. We’re shaped by others. And when we don’t agree we’re more likely to blame others for not thinking for themselves. #tlap
Awwwzers, thanks, Rebecca.
Why not ask the source? "What do you with your teachers were teaching? What tech tools do you want to use to share your knowledge of the content?" We have a 6 Q survey and one open-ended Q.--anything they want to tell us. #tlap#LetStudentsSpeak
A4b: I asked students on Thursday about how to make our warm-ups better because they were not working. Ss gave suggestions. Next class I applied their ideas and one student surprisingly said "Wow, he actually listened." We need Ts to see Ss voice matters!! #tlap
Q4- We must patiently teach Ss the way to appropriately express their ideas so they can communicate them in ways that others will listen...not always easy and often with bumps in the road. #tlap
A4 - 1 challenge is not liking what we are hearing. Then, feeling awkward. Here i told them that I would listen and hear and do, and now I don't want to run with their idea. I don't want to shut them down. What if things go badly? What if I look bad? #tlap
So proud to be a pirate . . . thanks to Dave and Shelley . . . They push their authors to not only write manifestos but to LOVE the final product! #tlap
A4: It's about having a conversation with Ss! "There's no time" is a frequent complaint or sometimes the focus is on the curriculum, the sched, etc. #letstudentsspeak#TLAP
A4: probably the same issues that arise when Ts feel their voices aren’t allowed to be heard. Time, bias, willingness of those around to truly listen and help, fear of change, and even at times the ability to effectively communicate the ideas #tlap
A4: It's challenging to get Ss to want to share, to believe we'll listen when they do, and then really truly listen to them, make sure we understand their point of view, and then go forward from there. #tlap#LetStudentsSpeak
A4: As a first grade teacher, I have my Ss practice using accountable talk when sharing their voice! This requires them to listen to each other, agree/disagree, and state evidence for their opinion! This is a detailed approach to our 1st grade class conversations! #tlap
A4. Encouraging our Ss to take those risks and speak up, For some introverts, it may be harder. We may have to work with them a little more! To empower our Ss, to create leaders for the future!! Get them ready for the challenge!#tlap
A4: Students are growing up in an "instant gratification world." Change in schools sometimes takes time. The challenge lies in the patience for them too see their voice and choice come to fruition and to believe that what they are doing matters. #tlap
A4: A challenge can be if schools value voice in making student evaluations of teachers be mandatory and used in the teacher’s performance review #tlap
A4: There are naysayers that don’t want to lose power. They believe that students will take over with no respect. We must stand up as social justice warriors and teach with action! #LetStudentsSpeak#tlap
A4: The challenges lie in truly hearing ALL voices even for those Ss that feel marginalized or that they have been silenced for so long it no longer matters. So often, it is the same voices being heard. #tlap
A4: People are often passionate during the discussion phase and then fizzle out on implementation. It is important to have team roles within the school to ensure that the voices are not only heard but the issues/ideas presented are acted on. #tlap
A4: One challenge is that this might be something completely new for Ts and Ss. Creating a safe space and authentic opportunities for student voice takes time. Time must be made because this is essential. #TLAP#LetStudentsSpeak
A3 If customers in a restaurant comment about a menu,it’s adjusted. If patrons at a hotel request more pillows, they get them. S voice should be a guiding voice for creating the environments they are to learn in! How do we create a product for Ss without listening to them? #tlap
A4 #TLAP#LetThemSpeak As an ELA teacher, student voice means breaking away from the traditional 5 paragraph essay. If you need justification for a writing program that honors voice and choice, read this article from the NYT: https://t.co/bLXcsEoc5K
A4: It is imperative to allow students to share their voices in a multitude of avenues. Just because students aren't "vocal" doesn't mean that their voice isn't powerful! #tlap
agreed, but so many of the changes our students want are things that THEIR parents wanted when THEY were students. change can be slow, but it shouldn't be generationally slow. #tlap
A4:
I think the biggest challengers getting Ss to trust that what they say is going to matter. Without that, they won’t take it seriously. Or won’t participate. We have to show that it’s more than lip service. #tlap
Your response reminded me of when my Ss use @Flipgrid for the first time... they are hesitant, not sure what to say or how, a little self-conscious... then the more they share, the more they own their own voice! Such a powerful transformation! #tlap
A4: In 3rd grade I use accountable talk too! I like the fact that everyone gets a turn to share, and everyone gets to hear someone else's opinion. #TLAP
A1: Hi everyone. Steve from Australia. For me, it's interesting to watch comments and posts on such a polarising topic. Gun violence is an inconceivable idea where I'm from. As an outsider looking in, it's hard to fathom. #tlap#letstudentsspeak
✨A4: MAKE TIME! The clock will keep ticking, but educators need to make time to let students speak! #Flipgrid has been a great tool to not only let students speak, but to be heard also. Their voices can be shared with the click of a button! The clock can't win this one! #TLAP✨
A4: Time may be considered a factor, but front loading these competencies helps lead to deeper understanding of concepts while building character. This process is part of #designthinking & #globaled skills. Involve your Ss in the feedback loop & be prepared to be amazed. #tlap
A4: probably the same issues that arise when Ts feel their voices aren’t allowed to be heard. Time, bias, willingness of those around to truly listen and help, fear of change, and even at times the ability to effectively communicate the ideas #tlap
A4 developing a schedule or setting aside time for communicating, building relationships and trust, challenge can be in getting Ss to open up, to feel comfortable speaking and take risks #tlap#LetStudentsSpeak
#tlap A4 The biggest challenge to student voice is coming to a consensus on a definition of student voice. What does it look/sound like? How do you know it is student voice?
I wonder if the feedback might be too "real" and maybe Ts, Admin, etc. don't want to face the fact that changes might need to be made, taking it personally? #tlap
Awwwzers, thanks, Rebecca.
Why not ask the source & listen?
"What makes class inviting & engaging?
What tech tools do you want to use to share your knowledge of the content?"
We have a 6 Q survey and one open-ended Q. #tlap#LetStudentsSpeak
Yes, if that’s what they truly care about. Kids certainly know how to protest when they’re not getting what they want. Adequate facilities may be a given... but are they inspired by the potential of, say, certain learning materials enough to fight for them? #tlap
A2 #TLAP WOW! That could be a game changer. Can you imagine if STUDENTS started making demands for adequate facilities, materials, books?? Who could deny a child who is requesting tools for something as fundamental as the opportunity to learn?? And THIS in the UNITED STATES!!
A4: With almost 38 students and only 57-90 minutes per period, I rarely have enough time to spend listening and engaging with each individual student on a daily basis. There are times when the bell rings mid-idea sharing and students want to keep going. #TLAP#LetStudentsSpeak
I had a student make a suggestion in class that would make my life easier. I was so enthusiastic that I made a vlog post about her idea during my prep time. Part of the excitement was that the student felt comfortable making suggestions to me. #tlap#LetStudentsSpeak
A4: I remember complaining about tracking in middle school. We had math and LA A and B semesters. It was pretty obvious how they grouped us. The principal denied it to my mom and I. They offered to move me. I said never mind. It was hard enough to speak up. #tlap
A4 One student’s “I Wonder” question from today: “Can we have more lessons like this?” YES! Let student voice guide the way and tell you what works (and what doesn’t!) #tlap#hcpspln
A4: The challenges lie in truly hearing ALL voices even for those Ss that feel marginalized or that they have been silenced for so long it no longer matters. So often, it is the same voices being heard. #tlap
A4: helping students feel safe enough to speak up and helping them realize that it is not only their right to be heard but that it is a responsibility to speak up. It’s a process that requires dedication #tlap
That safe space could be small chunks of time where they start with private feedback to the teacher through a backchannel. Then build to where they're comfortable to share out loud. Sometimes 'voice' just means being heard. #tlap
I am good! Really looking forward to this new project I am starting w my 5th grs. Reflecting on their 6yrs in elementary school & the importance of memories. Creating memory boxes of their time before moving up to Middle School. #tlap
And here it's become so commonplace, the kids don't even always react (or seem as horrified as adults do). Proof that things need to change here in the US. #TLAP
Just throwing this out, we are talking about Student Voice, what we really need to be talking about is Student Action #tlap Are we allowing for Student Action?
A4: The first challenge that came to mind was TIME. I wonder if teachers, administration, the community and all others involved will give Ss the time and listen to them in the first place. I hope so. I will—and advocate for those kids that want to speak.
#LetStudentsSpeak#TLAP
A4 I love the idea of student experts in the classroom. Especially when it comes to Digital Technology. Our Senior School kids (if they aren't already) are fast becoming more proficient with tech than there teachers. #tlap#LetStudentsSpeak
A4: Say “yes” to something if it’s what you believe in! One “yes” can take you very far! If we value this process, we may need to say no to some things in order to allow the Tim needed to truly listen and collaboratively problem solve with kids. #tlap
A5: Two words: Value Vulnerability. There is always room for growth and improvement. Guide students in the best way to share their critiques in an uplifting way - teach them the art of powerful communication! #tlap
A5: Feedback is a gift! I liked the criticism almost more than the praise, it gave me something to work on and an area in which to grow. If I have Ss that are unsuccessful and they never give me criticism, that means I can't help them. And that is unacceptable! #tlap
A5: That's tough for so many people. Remember, don't ask the question if you don't want to hear the answer. For someone w/o growth mindset that's not a good scenario. #tlap
Q5: Don’t take anything personally. Use what they are saying to build yourself as a better educator.
Ss will tell it like it is, if you let them! #tlap
A3 as the end user ... the students are the target customer. Getting feeback and input from students should be the Begin With The End In Mind step. We should start with our data & feedback from the end user...and build our product from there ✏️‼️#tlap
A5: remember that their feedback guides your growth the same way yours guides theirs. I always tell my Ss to be respectful but constructive in their feedback the way I am with them. #tlap
A5: What is the saying, "Put your big boy pants on..." If we truly want change in our practices that allows more Ss voice, than we need to take it on the chin when they say what we may not want to hear. Their feedback should be used for reflection. #tlap
A5: I think it’s fun to get constructive feedback from Ss. They have great ideas and great class discussions occur when we discuss projects or ways of making things better. #tlap
A5: I routinely ask for S feedback after learning experiences. If it's something new, I tell them it's new, might fail, but let's try it! I model risk taking, & then spend last 5 minutes getting feedback I can use to improve the experience for next class. #tlap#LetStudentsSpeak
A5 Keep in mind the purpose and outcome of the feedback is to improve instruction. Also that they’re kiddos...They may not have the social or language skills to sugar coat feedback so that it doesn’t hurt your adult feelings. #tlap
A5: Don't take it personally like an insult. We are dealing with kids, I truly believe they are not malicious. Use their criticism as growth opportunities. Reach out to those Ss as you are making changes to get more feedback and build positive relationships! #tlap
A5: I model a positive way to give criticism or feedback. Once they see how to help others with feedback, they use that purpose to practice giving feedback with peers. #TLAP
One way is to teach them how to criticize in a way the is helpful. Many don't come with that competency. So, show that you are hearing, then, show them how to rephrase. Also, reminder to self: I grow from criticism. I wanna grow, right? #tlap
A5 Any criticism is tough, but where can you get honest feedback from a perspective you don't always se - kids. There input is invaluable and can only improve you as a teacher and adult. #tlap
A5- Tough to hear criticism in any venue, even if it is just self reflection, but that is when true growth an improvement happen. Do we want honest feedback so we can get better? That is a question we need to ask ourselves #tlap
A5: You need to be reflective and realize that you are not perfect. If you are not willing to accept feedback and "criticism" then you have not embraced a growth mindset. You can learn a lot from your students, most importantly how they learn and what they want to learn! #tlap
We often judge by the student, rather than by what the student says. Sometimes the most unlikely student will have the radically important perspective. We have to give them a chance to consider and speak. #tlap
We'd love to include your success story of when you #LetStudentsSpeak in the #StoriesinEDU book. Would you take a few minutes this week to add your story here? https://t.co/qcPmZOOhnt#tlap Choose the category VOICE & CHOICE or the one on HOOKS!
Yes, I want to work on training those top performing students to serve as facilitators. I want them to experience the power of active listening and empowering others to share their voice. #tlap
A5: It can be scary at first as you feel vulnerable with self doubt. However, just like we encourage our Ss to have a growth mindset, their honest, constructive feedback opens channels of respect through dialogue. This establishes trust & rapport. Plus, you learn a lot! #tlap
A5: Similar perspective with critique that may come from others: What pleased you most from responses? What surprised you? Are there any changes or adjustments you intend to make as a result of this feedback? #tlap
A5: In the book we refer to student zingers and stingers. If we are really going to do this it starts with US! And it might sting at first. #LetStudentsSpeak#tlap
Such an important question. Example: We asked "Do you have high expectations of your Ss?" to Ts 95% said "strongly agree" We asked students "Do your Ts have high expectations of you?" 86% of our Hispanic male students said "Strongly disagree" #BePrepared#tlap
A5b: My number one classroom expectation has always been respect. I modeled it for my students and expected it in return. I welcomed criticism when it came from a place of love. And when it didn't, that gave me an opportunity to show that S some love. #tlap
They can be inspired... My students are AFTER me to find a way to incorporate a certain video game into our lessons. If they think it will be cool, they will stay on you to do it. Sometimes it is all in the presentation... #tlap
A5: how can we expect Ss to accept our feedback & constructive criticism if we are “afraid” to receive theirs? We need to know what they are thinking, what helps them, what frustrates them. We prepare by asking them to be honest. #tlap#LetStudentsSpeak#LoveLiteracyLearning
A4. I would say a challenge outside of what everyone else said is when a teacher empowers a child by promoting student voice and then that same child moves up to the next grade and he/she doesn’t have that empowerment, choice, or voice- then he/she feels silenced🙄😢#tlap
#tlap A5 With student voice comes responsibility and a set of norms and nonegotiables. It's not intended to be a free for all. Student voice needs to come with respect and kindness.
Q5: To prepare for criticism, there could be a balance of positive comments and critical comments. Also, if a problem is brought up, then a solution needs to be stated with the problem.
#tlap
A5 IMO it’s about remembering why we got into education, which for me was to make a difference in every child’s life, & when we remind ourselves of that & that we have to look through many different lenses. Our Ss provide us w/prescription lenses to help us see #tlap
A5: As a reflective educator, I am always seeking to improve, evolve, and grow. Receiving feedback from students is integral to this process. #TLAP#LetStudentsSpeak

✨A5: BRING SOLUTIONS! Let's lead students to be problem solvers, not problem identifiers! Constructive feedback is only constructive if a solution accompanies it! #TLAP#LetStudentsSpeak✨
Good criticism can be a great teaching tool - teach Ss how you can use some of their feedback/criticism but not others because it's not clear & focused on an issue. #tlap
A5: before we even start with feedback, Ts model respectful convos w/Ss! Our availability to engage in a convo makes feedback covos ones that can move both Ts & Ss forward as a team! #tlap#LetStudentsSpeak

The students who aren't at the high end are also good at getting other kids to respond and collaborate. They reach the kids that don't respond to anyone else. #TLAP
Thank you! It was inspired by our VP @hiyuuko when she turned a discipline referral into a solution-oriented conversation with the students involved. #tlap
We often judge by the student, rather than by what the student says. Sometimes the most unlikely student will have the radically important perspective. We have to give them a chance to consider and speak. #tlap
A5 Start by not taking things personally. If you want feedback, make sure you model constructive criticism. Be ready to reflect with them regularly. Always centre decisions and feedback on what makes things better for kids. They are what is most important. #TLAP
A5: I think student feedback provides opportunity for teacher reflection!! Without that knowledge, it’s hard to implement change! If we focus on doing what’s best for our students, we have to be open to hearing their opinions! #tlap

A5:Being secure in who I am as an educator and as a human is the first step. I started to allow others to be who they are when I accepted who I am (strengths and flaws). When I build efficacy and confidence in myself, I encourage that for my students. #LetStudentsSpeak#TLAP
The problem is that sometimes we (yes most of us make up that we) only want to hear them say "that was great." Sometimes it comes down to not wanting honest voices. However, those are probably times when the feedback may be the most needed #tlap
Overheard @AdVENTURESTEM 7th graders discussing how to best approach their writing across the curriculum assignment. "Dude, you just need to trust the process!" #ditchbook#TLAP#PLN@sandramc59's words coming back :)
A5. Having positive open discussions in the classroom where the Ss feel confident to chime in and add their comments freely without any penalties. #tlap
A5b: I also use S feedback, solicited or unsolicited, in my reflections. Sometimes I think something bombed, but the Ss don't think so. Sometimes I think something is awesome, & Ss aren't impressed. It's not personal. It's growth. #tlap#LetStudentsSpeak
A5: As a reflective educator, I am always seeking to improve, evolve, and grow. Receiving feedback from students is integral to this process. #TLAP#LetStudentsSpeak
A5: Be prepared to ask probing ?s. What a S says 1st may or may not get at the heart of their feedback. Remember that Ss will not provide always provide feedback in the most socially appropriate ways bc that is a skill they are still in the process of learning. #tlap
A5: I’ve never been upset by s feedback. If I’m feeling especially vulnerable, I keep extra chocolate in my desk, LOL. We learn early each semester how to give constructive feedback. They practice on me. I kind of toughen up. In doing this, I learn their voices early on. #tlap
A5 you have to have a personal growth mindset deep in your ♥️ so you truly value and respect student input and can wrap your head around it and take it into your heart without letting it bruise your heart or soul! #tlap
Thanks for this very challenging chat tonight. Made me think about things I wasn't fully prepared to think about at first. I'll be thinking about some of these things for a good while. #tlap
A5: At the end of the year, I have students write a letter to the upcoming class. It gives real insight into how they perceived me. I have to understand that this is their opinion, and it gives me room to grow. #TLAP
A5: Trust. Vulnerability & trust are intricately related. We must create deep trust between ourselves and Ss— a trust that says “I trust that you will take care of me” and both know that taking care of each other means giving feedback that leads to growth. #tlap
Totally! My current position allows me structured time to work with the ones on the higher end. I'll start there and reach out to others to get involved! #tlap
A5: Always remember that we ask our students to receive constructive criticism. We can't ask them to accept it and use it if we don't do the same. #TLAP
A5: I think we can influence the direct and tenor of Ss voice by being incredibly vulnerable with both past and present. IMO this encourages a healthier conversation. #tlap
A5: Be prepared to ask probing ?s. What a S says 1st may or may not get at the heart of their feedback. Remember that Ss will not always provide feedback in the most socially appropriate ways bc that is a skill they are still in the process of learning. #tlap
A6: Short conversations in the hallway, standing at the door between classes, the bleachers at school events = all great places to build relationships outside of the academic setting. Sometimes all it takes is a friendly smile and a genuine 'how are you?' to open the door. #tlap
A6: I started implementing circle time in the morning. We all share out something that is going on in our life and something positive. We didn’t do it today bc of state testing and the kids were upset. So that is where I will start. I will find time tmrw even with testing. #tlap
A6: While I love chatting with students 1:1, I think @Flipgrid, @Seesaw, and Google Classroom provide equitable access for Ss at my school to amplify Ss voice. Ask the question and they will answer! "How can we make your school experience better?" #tlap
A6: Our Ss have a commons area that always contains a variety of kids. Asking their opinion on anything happening opens the door for conversation. #tlap
A5: When you view feedback as the driver for growth, feedback becomes a powerful tool for learning, both as a student, but also as an educator. It's scary to hear the not so good, but who else will speak truth than a student? #tlap
Pumped up for the week now! Thanks #tlap for the inspiration! Hope to see many of you pirate sail over #waledchat on Thursday at 9pm ET when chat about procedures. Hope to see you there!
A6: Just talking & reflecting with a colleague friend regarding one of the lessons that didn't go quite as planned. One thing is to involve Ss to be reflective with you in understanding the objective of an activity or lesson. Do your Ss have clarity of expectations? #tlap
A6: I am the district level, but am always in and out of schools. I am also a librarian so I think the media center is my go to for talking to Ss and listening to what they have to say. #tlap
A6 The cafeteria and playground are great ways to see kids at their most authentic. With no stress of work surrounding them they show up in surprising ways! #tlap
A5: I’ll quote @BreneBrown on this one “those who have a strong sense of love and belonging have the courage to be imperfect” Grab her most recent book about Belonging to prepare yourself. It’s fantastic. #tlap#strongbacksoftfrontwildheart
A6: Our principal takes time to meet with students during lunch. It's a great time while Ss stress level is lowered to have a genuine discussion - just don't invade their space too much. #tlap
A6: 2 minute conversations during transition time not only builds relationships, but gets students talking about their thoughts and interests. Details matter. #TLAP#LetStudentsSpeak
