I'm Grant, #saskedchat Book? Probably... To Kill a Mockingbird. Chocolate bar? Reese's cups. This is not a debate!. Movie? Um, Harvey, Princess Bride, Apocalypse Now, and Rogue One, maybe?
Hello #Saskedchat my name is Lindsey McNab and I am in my third year of Early Education at UofR. My fav book is To Kill a Mockingbird, fav chocolate bar is Cookies and Cream and favourite movie is Grease!!
A1. understanding how kids learn and what unlocks their curiosity and creativity.... then put them in positions to be successful. Don't overthink it. #saskedchat
Hey #saskedchat, Brooke from Dilke SK. English teacher and student support with @SunWestSD207. Can never pick a fav book, Hersey's cookies and cream, and Mulan
A1: To differentiate in the classroom means to utilize your resources and ‘tools’ as a teacher and implement them as needed to ensure that all students succeed! #saskedchat
A1. Knowing that not all Ss learn at the same rate or in the same way requiring differentiation changes teaching.... but knowing that it occurs daily with reflection on Ss daily needs and formative assessment changes learning and lives. #saskedchat
A1: It could look like designing content in multiple ways, delivering to the different learning styles or adapting the learning environment. #saskedchat
A2: Making students feel “stupid”. Giving them an “alternate” assignment because they’re not “able” to complete the fun assignment. Singling students out. Basically, differentiation is NOT making kids feel less. #saskedchat
A1: Okay, I'll play nice. I'm different, so.. Oh, REALLY answer? Meet them where they are, with what they care about, how they can, to take them where they need to be. #saskedchat (All these extra characters are going to slow me down and make others crazy!)
A2: Differentiation does NOT mean giving students special treatment! That being said, it must also not be singling students out with "alternate" assignments to complete. #saskedchat
A2: Differentiation does NOT mean to give all students the same means to show their learning, because that one way will not ensure success for everyone. #saskedchat
I want this in really large writing, written in the sky so that every person understands that a teacher does not have to plan a individual lesson for all students, for every lesson, everyday! #saskedchat
Please stop at using all the characters - it’s too hard to read all the way to the end and, like sitting in the back of the bus, I’m getting nauseated trying to read your responses as they scroll by so quickly so can you use a normal amount of characters for #saskedchat please
A2.Differentiation should never require re-inventing teaching and could allow students who understand the material to "pull" peers along who may need a little peer love in learning.. it should never be difficult for the teacher and it should always be owned by Ss. #saskedchat
Q3. Differentiation requires teachers to "own the success of a student"(Tomlinson, 2008). What does this look, sound and feel like in the classroom? #saskedchat
A1. To differentiate in the classroom is to recognize individual student learning styles, then teach each student in a safe and supportive learning environment #saskedchat
Hey you. Yeah, you! You're here at #saskedchat taking part in this great learning. Why not moderate an upcoming chat about a topic of your choice. Check out our upcoming themes and add a topic. And yes, we'll help you along the way! https://t.co/OOcoiTpFso
A3: It looks different for each student and it feels like MAGIC!
For real. I cannot explain the rush I get when my kids say, “MRS. POLLARD… I UNDERSTAND NOW!” You can see the excitement on their faces and I love it. #saskedchat
A3. Student ownership looks like students talking about Ss' work hanging in the hallways, discussions and disagreements about the best strategy to multiply, shared novels and poetry that moves in different ways... Ss talking learning!!! It's theirs not mine. #saskedchat
A2: Differentiation should not be to help the "dumb" kids or give more work to the "smart" ones so they take the same amount of time to complete the assignment.
#saskedchat
A3: To "own the success of a student” (Tomlinson, 2008) I think LOOKS like excitement, SOUNDS like cheering, and FEELS joyful - for the teacher and student. #saskedchat
A3: Not sure I agree that teachers own student success, unless it's mean to mean that teachers must try every reasonable means to see a student succeed. Students still have to do the work.
#saskedchat
Q3. Differentiation requires teachers to "own the success of a student"(Tomlinson, 2008). What does this look, sound and feel like in the classroom? #saskedchat
A4: students can learn in different ways, we can have one method of teaching something but having additional to supplement allows for greater differentiation. #saskedchat
A2: Differentiation does not mean focusing on 'outliers' or students who need extra support. It is about being proactive and valuing equity #saskedchat
A4: This means to provide various ways to learn, to accommodate all learners! For example, allowing students to use manipulatives as well as work out a math question on a piece of paper, on the whiteboard, etc.! #saskedchat
A4 I think that means planning to accept different forms of response whenever possible. A spoken response can be as valid as a written one. Art can be a legitimate response. #saskedchat
A4: "Varied avenues to learning” (Tomlinson, 2008) means that educators must plan for students to learn differently than their peers. This relates to teaching, assignments, assessments, etc. One’s path to learn will require different ways to get there. #saskedchat
A4 Abd when it is not possible to vary the response medium, planning for recognizing different levels of success based on current student ability is extra important. #saskedchat
A4. Know.Your.Kids. For example- some of my Ss chose a biome and built a model, explaining it in a video. Others built a place they would most like to live, and we talked through what biome they had just created together. #saskedchat
A4.Asking Ss to choose written vs. video vs. song vs. acting vs. sketching to show their learning... the material matters little.. the method of showing what you know defines the efficacy of differentiation. Plan for Ss' choice in sharing mastery.
#saskedchat
Q5. Differentiation is systematic attention to readiness, interest, and learning profile. How does a teacher use these when planning differentiation? #saskedchat
A5: Being intentional about individualizing the learning experience for every single student.
Make every student feel like they CAN learn it. #saskedchat
Craisins are supposed to be healthy. Adding chocolate seems to defeat the purpose. Not saying they aren't amazing, but really? It'd be like chocolate-covered cucumber...

A3. Teachers "own the success of a student"(Tomlinson, 2008) because in differentiated classroom, the teachers is expected to intentionally adjust curriculum & instruction in response to each student readiness, interest, and learning style #saskedchat
A5. This is very much a culture you have to create. Ss voice and choice, combined with the desire to create authentic learning experiences make it part of what you naturally do as a teacher #saskedchat
A5: knowing what interest students gives you a starting point in how to connect the curriculum with the students, more interests can be reached in a lesson if you allow the student to take part in the convo #saskedchat
A5 Readiness: identifying the current level of the student to be able to complete the task. Interest: noting how engaged the student is in the material. Learning profile: accounting for necessary adaptations the student may require. #saskedchat
A3. Differentiation means that the teacher teaches EACH student. That is, teaching-learning should take place within what Vygotsky’s (1978) calls a child's zone of proximal development #saskedchat
the main purpose of chocolate is so that people can justify eating way too much because technically they are eating the fruit that the chocolate happens to be covering. #saskedchat
A5: Developing relationships with students is critical in guiding their learning. Use their interests, experiences and social groupings as a starting point when planning differentiation. #saskedchat
It's me again. Yeah, I'm serious about this moderating thing for #saskedchat. Why not moderate an upcoming chat about a topic of your choice. Check out our upcoming themes and add a topic. And yes, we'll help you along the way! https://t.co/5mJZkcifeO
A6 I really think the journey is more important than the destination. Identifying how the student is attempting to problem solve tells us so much about what they have learned. #saskedchat
A6: I think the easiest way of incorporating student choice is to let them have options for showing their understanding (i.e. assessments). As long as they can demonstrate the knowledge, understanding and skills, does it matter how they do it?
#saskedchat
A6. It's all in how you offer their choices to show what they know.. models to video... there is more than just a test or quiz!! But then there's methods to present material from EDpuzzle to Nearpod to Class Flow... it's endless... differentiate away!!! #saskedchat
A6 The final product will reflect the work and understanding the students have achieved. The medium of that product is a reflection of their interests and aptitudes. #saskedchat
A7. More frequently assessment looks like conferencing with students often in literacy and math... frequent formative assessment and over-analyzing pre-test data and teaching to it!!! #saskedchat
A5. I like the term student 'interest.' In differentiation, a teacher needs to know what excites & engages the attention & curiosity of a student; & keeps the student motivated & involved. Thus, teacher needs to know his/her students. Learning is about relationships #saskedchat
A7) It is where teachers are constantly reflecting their practice and refining in order to reach all of their students and moving away from the mindset of I taught it so they should have learned it #saskedchat
A7: This one is hard. My thoughts are to expand the idea of assessment FOR learning. Chats about hobbies, likes/dislikes, etc. are all fodder for creating learning tailored to Ss. Maybe? #saskedchat
A7: Using assessment to inform instruction looks like engagement, sounds like teacher-student and peer conversations and feels like a community where the teacher cares about students’ success. #saskedchat
A6. We are a democracy, right? Lets allow students to have choices based on a variety of interests. Some/many students may have common interests, while others may not. Will well planned activities, all students are likely to benefit when given choices #saskedchat
TA. Differentiation solutions are only a click and a message away with PLN's like these.... Differentiation IS an extended PLN.
Thanks as always for a great chat.
