This is a question. Sadly, I don’t! But I am getting better at it. Two years ago I started saying no. Even if I really wanted to do what was being asked. #bfc530
#bfc530 Good morning, you beautiful people! Hope the weekend was fantastic! Susan from the Jersey Shore. *YAWN* *pours a second cup with one eye closed*
Our Coping Skills page has links to balance work and family https://t.co/zDszpRHRFI Hope everyone has another awesome week of learning. My youngest granddaughter just woke up and will be taking her to 1st grade this morning. #bfc530
Morning #bfc530.
The balancing act is always a challenge, but our Principal is a family man and always tells us family first! He has our back if we need any time for family.
Through the years, this has been a challenge at times. Family must be first, always! Making lists and sticking to times I set for work have been key for balancing things. #bfc530
I have 2 elementary age girls. I work from 6:00 - 3:10 daily (students arrive at 7:50). I miss my girls in the mornings, but I get to be with them in the afternoons and evenings. On weekends , I try to limit my classroom work to under 2 hours. #bfc530
The trick for me is that when I do something I truly love, something that resonates so deeply with my being, there is really no "life" and "work" separation. I just am...and I love it! #bfc530
Balancing work and family...in all honesty, it’s never easy...but as I get older I realize how critically important it is to strive for balance...letting go of schedules, from time-to-time, just to BE with family...play is fun in the classroom and equally fun with family! #bfc530
I decided when my first child was born that I wouldn’t bring home work to grade any more, and for the most part I’ve stuck with that. They deserve my undivided attention, just as my students do when I’m at school. #bfc530
Morning! The way I balance work/family has shifted a bunch over the years. As a single mom of busy kids it isn't easy, but if I think of it less as a balancing act, but as life's priorities, it gets easier. You guys see me lesson planning in the dancing school lobby :) #bfc530
Honestly, I have a hard time with this. At any given time I feel like I give too much to one side and neglect things on the other. I would like to find balance between these two things and self care. #bfc530
A: This is my struggle as well. I try to remember my children are young only once. The days are long but the years are short. I do get caught up doing school things too often though. #bfc530
Good morning! 1st year teacher here - I was told before starting to pick 2: go in early, stay late, or work on the weekend. I find myself working for an hour and a half in the mornings /afternoons & then on sundays #BFC530
I try to keep weekends open for my family, not always successful. Also, the reason I wake up early on school days is to get work done knowing my family is still asleep. #bfc530
#bfc530 I try to keep weekends free of work, but let's face it, as teachers we are always on the lookout for lessons, activities, or we are grading. A half hour extra during the week each day helps keep weekend work to a minimum.
My son hangs out a lot in my class- we finish @2:30 so I can pick him up early from the daycare around the corner. He comes back with me to my class, & plays with another teacher's daughter while I do prep. They have a lot of fun and I can do when I need to get done. #bfc530
Good Morning #bfc530. For @MrStevenHall and me,
being educators is 24/7. So it’s difficult always to separate school time and family time. However, we make each interest a family affair. Football, Scouts, school we are in it together.
One of the best tools one can use to help find balance is Covey's classic 4 quadrants. I started using it in the late 80s and it's still a wonderful tool all these years later. #bfc530
Balancing is a little easier now that I am out of the classroom, but here were many spring breaks that I brought a stack of essays to grade while on vacation. Balance is so important. #bfc530
Good morning friends! This is a great question today. Teaching can consume you. I spent a lot of my summer doing prep and planning for school. I spent a lot of my weekend doing school work. My family sees me working hard. They also see me leave that work to be with them #bfc530
Yes, when I first started, I went early, stayed late, worked at home at night and on the weekends.... was hating life by November. Figured out that going early and working on Saturday mornings worked best for me. #balance#bfc530

Welp, I’m not the one to talk to as I work very long hours and when home hubs and I talk ed allllllll the time. He’s in ed too so really understands the obsession. We do play hard though, and travel a lot for fun which helps us get away mentally and physically. No kids. #bfc530
Definitely a challenge. Completely accepting the idea that there will always be work that needs done helps me change the mindset of "I have to finish this..." Set priorities. #bfc530
Through the years, this has been a challenge at times. Family must be first, always! Making lists and sticking to times I set for work have been key for balancing things. #bfc530
I will be honest ... school stuff is always smashing into my weekends and evenings ... about 5 hours of my Sunday spent on paperwork ... not lesson planning ... paperwork #bfc530
Good morning, Kathy from MD. I struggled with this for a bit. This year, I only stay late one day a week and I leave at 5pm the rest of the week (4pm dismissal.) Family dinners are at least 4 nights per week #bfc530
Great question! It takes awareness to find the balance, I try to be present-I talk about this every day with novice teachers, stressing the need to find balance 😊 👍 #bfc530
I remember doing all 3 the first year... its tough to break the cycle and try to find time for yourself, but you need some #selfcare if youre going to survive... #bfc530
For the most part - not well. I’m not new at this, but I still find it very difficult to do everything my job requires along with the things my home life requires. Me time? Maybe a little in the summer between drop offs and pick ups. I’ve sorta given up. #bfc530
Earlier this year, my husband started a new job working from home & man, did it give me a sense, right away, of what it's like to be the spouse of a teacher working on evenings & weekends. All summer, I kept kids away from his office & went out. Appreciate him much more! #bfc530
I think just the fact that so many of us struggle with finding this balance in our lives shows our high level of commitment to the process involved! Feel good about that, my friends! #bfc530
I find it interesting how we talk about work/life balance in education like it is optional. I wake up early/stay late so I won’t sacrifice family ... so you sacrifice self? #bfc530
Having the same curriculum for the past 5 years has helped, just replacing plans with updates and new ideas rather than all new takes a lot less time from the family #bfc530
I guess I should have mentioned that I try to go in 30-45 min early everyday and I was grading yesterday after dinner while one son did hw and the other was at work #bfc530
Clearly, I wake up early to get a head start on work, but there's always more, and I hate to say it, especially when you're an English teacher. If students don't write more, they can't be better writers. #bfc530
Good morning #bfc530 I have no tips, other than to make the most of it when you have moments during the school year. It’s rough for Ts, most especially with not enough hours in school day for all of the prep and feedback work required to be effective.
It’s tough. There is so little time during a workday for anything other than the pressing needs in front of us. I find I truly resent this aspect of the work now, whereas 10 years ago, I just accepted it as normal. #bfc530
Indeed! Focusing on rituals each morning for example...such as exercise, yoga, and even a wonderful chat! ;) It all helps maximize the focus and effectiveness of one's day. #bfc530
I am not a fan of the the term work-life balance, TBH. It makes it seem like your life and family have to be separate from the work you do. My job is to get students excited about reading and writing. No need to separate that from my family. #bfc530
Good morning everyone. It is not always easy to balance work and family. Some days I do a better job than others. There are also times that one area needs more attention than the other. It’s a work in progress. #BFC530
A: Do my best to give 100% wherever I am. When I’m home, I set aside time to finish school work and then the majority of my time is with family. They deserve my undivided attention just like Ss & Ts do at school. We make time for what’s important #BFC530
I will be honest ... school stuff is always smashing into my weekends and evenings ... about 5 hours of my Sunday spent on paperwork ... not lesson planning ... paperwork #bfc530
The balance act isn’t easy. Many of my best learning opportunities are over the weekends at edcamps, conferences and coffee edu’s, but I’ve cut back on weekend PD and put family first and now pick and choose wisely how many weekend PD events To attend. #BFC530
G’day! David joining from Sydney, Australia! Great Q! I’ve always worked to a regime of starting early&finishing around 5:30pm sometimes 6pm. Work done in those 9-10 hours means I usually don’t work weekends. That is time for family & friends. Likewise when I get home.
#bfc530
Right! I always try to@get planning done at school. Often I will plan a whole unit at home but day to day planning at school I also have @planbookcom so I can make changes it I need to #bfc530
This worked for me as kids got older, I stayed at school late, so when I came home I was really home, but can’t do when you have daycare pickups at 3:30! #bfc530

There is no such thing as balance. You're either really ahead in work and missing out on family time, or you're with family and behind in work. The 50/50 balance does not exist in this thing we call life. #bfc530
I can handle a waste of money more than a waste of time. Dont give me tasks just to make things "look good" that doesnt have any impact on my students. Reducing busy work helps restore Work/Family balance. #bfc530
I wake up early to work out and have me time. My husband gets the kids to school. I get to work early and I try to do as much of my work at school as I can. I take care of evening pickups and homework with the kids. Weekends are for family adventures. #bfc530
Have a great day everyone! Took a small group of Ts and support staff from my school rafting yesterday- it was such a great way to come together #bfc530
Good morning all! With school, family all going in different directions, church, community organizations, and taking classes myself, keeping a balance is sometimes tough. I am a family first person so my family will always take precedence. I preach this to my staff as well#bfc530
#bfc530 Today's question is huge for me! I have activities with my family on my calendar, and they are true commitments. We are better #teachers when we keep connections to family and friends.
And my daughter a few days ago showed me a worksheet from one of her Ts last updated in 2009 and said “Mom, this is the teacher I wish you’d be.” Doesn’t help when your kids see Ts taking short cuts when you don’t! #bfc530
Explaining to my students recently the importance of a Social Studies education even if it doesnt get you a job, "You are much more than your job" something I need to remember too. Have a great start to the week everyone. Im out! #bfc530
For me, it comes down to letting go of work guilt. I might not be able to accomplish everything under the sun for work one day, and that’s okay. I won’t allow it to be at the expense of my mental/physical health. We only get one life! #BFC530
Honestly, I have a hard time with this. At any given time I feel like I give too much to one side and neglect things on the other. I would like to find balance between these two things and self care. #bfc530
I am the gifted student consult teacher this year ... 48 kids to monitor ... on top of my classes ... just getting that plate spinning has been tough. Hopefully now that it is spinning I can add it to all my other spinning plates #bfc530
But does she wish her teacher were still engaged in teaching?? Similar thing when my daughter was in the grade I teach - colleague used a project assignment 11 years old, had kids cross off the old due date, write in present year. 😳 #bfc530
I used to stay later at school so that when I am home, I can spend that time with my wife. Once I started teaching internationally, that strategy stopped working. Now, I have certain days in the week that I set aside just for family (no work). #bfc530
Everyone’s life is different. Everyone needs to find the balance that works for them. And it may change #bfc530 but at the end of the day it has to be family first.
I think our kids understand better than anyone the importance of our efforts, which eases the pain of having a “busy” parent, and *spoiled rotten summers* help too, especially when I have things to remind them of during the school year! #bfc530
#bfc530 Last year I lost a sister to cancer. She lived 15 minutes from me, and I think about all the times we wanted to get together, but I was "too busy." That was a hard lesson for me. Now my family is first, and I am a better person for it, therefore a better #teacher as well.
Managing the emotional labor of teaching is so important to prevent burnout. School leaders + districts need to be better allies in helping teachers in this aspect of our jobs. Healthy emotional labor practices have benefits for teachers + their students. #bfc530
Good morning! Mariana from Houston, checking in for the first time in a long time! I’ve been catching up with the hashtag every am this school year #bfc530
My “one word” for this yr is “present.” As such, I try *really hard* to be present in the moment wherever I am, whether that’s in my classroom, in a mtg, @ home w/ family, or out w/ friends. We aren’t our best selves when we’re stressed, so we MUST take time to relax! #bfc530
The time + financial resources I’ve put into work over the last 15 years have been massive (+ I’m not alone), but, as a new father, these commitments have to shift. I can’t continue to support initiatives out of my home time + my own pocket at the expense of my daughter. #bfc530
Balance! I feel like I’m finally getting a little better about this after 8 years in the profession! 😜 One way that I seek balance is to set at least 2 days ea wk where I leave work early. #bfc530
#bfc530 Being a long time adm, I chose to stay in the district my kids were in so that I could see them grow up and experience their education. I’ve always looked at all kids as mine...they were in there somewhere.😊#RelationshipsB4Tasks
Most people believe they can see it all, but they might be in the dark. To shed light on one's path, to genuinely invest in another, and to share life experiences that add perspective--Now that takes a good colleague, a great coach, or a real friend. #CelebrateMonday#bfc530
Balancing these two is vital to our mental health as well as some “me” time. I try and square up as much as I can before I leave school then try to shut it off at night. I still need 2-3 nights to sit down and get work done if I want it right. #bfc530#balanceLAP

I am learning to find a new work and life balance this year. I realize I can do the 50-50, but life needs more than 50% of my time (family, self well-being, friends ...) so my question becomes how do I achieve, say, a 40-60 split? #bfc530
Still working on that one! Woke up late today as this weekend was jam packed with #EdcampNewarkNJ and #Fightsoftball I got to work on one of my action research projects for an entire 5 minutes while sitting in the parking lot. My planner is LIFE! Happy Monday! #bfc530

Wow, I used to have better balance between the work/life, when my daughter was around. Since her HS graduation in 2017 I have lost my balance and now I struggle. I thought it would have become easier w/out all the additional mom life happenings. #bfc530
Señor, ayúdame a empezar la semana con entusiasmo y con la firme disposición de hacer las cosas bien. Dame la perseverancia y la paciencia, la fe y la caridad.

Tú ya sabes, Madre nuestra,
que miramos hacia el cielo
buscando allí nuestra solución;
hoy te vemos en la tierra

Morning, #bfc530. Rather than the word 'balance,' I prefer to focus on prioritizing; in other words, intentionally tipping the scale in a direction dictated by needs. Reflect & adjust (& communicate) regularly about where I'm leaning for now -- or *not* leaning -- plus why.

☀️Completely missed today’s chat, got to sleep in. School is cancelled here today due to tornado damage this past wknd. Thankfully I’ve had power and am safe 🙂 Balance: I’ve always loved this quote, challenges me. We make time for the important things in our lives. #BFC530
I’m the same here too. I try to get as much as I can done before I leave for the evening, but I have to take things home most weekends-especially during paperwork time (IEPs, Report Cards etc). #BFC530
Time-shifting (& time zones) mean you've never missed a chat, Amber :) Happy to hear power's on & you're safe. Thanks for sharing quote. It made me think of catchphrase from @donalynbooks about "stealing time" for independent reading; must be taken from other priorities. #bfc530
