Interested in student-driven classrooms? Join Dr. Nancy Sulla @nsulla (author of Students Taking Charge, Its Not What You Teach But How, Building Executive Function: The Missing Link to Student Achievement, and more) and educators from all over in #LATICchat on Thursday nights at 8pm ET. We hope to bring together a community of educators to share insights, stories, examples, pictures from their classrooms, and more. We welcome all educators to join; no need to be running a #LATIC classroom.
Hey #LATICchat! Tanya, IDE VP, joining in from the road (I am a passenger!) on the way home from an amazing night of Design on Display @SandersSMES So jazzed to talk about #creativity!
A2 Activities that allow students to express their solutions through their own design like a social media campaign or using the design process #LATICchat
I am working with Ss in technology class now who are selecting an ISTE standard and demonstrating that standard through a project of choice. We have designers of all sorts who are taking on more than we had hoped! #LATICchat
A3. Our current ALU focuses on RL.3.7 (illustrations and mood) while the Ss create their own take on Van Gogh’s Starry Night! Ss will hold an art gallery for the community, while raising money for a local pet shelter #LATICchat
Their choice. Some will share with the class, but I am hoping to connect with others via Twitter and other resources. We are just getting started. This project is happening in an exploratory 1x/week and is just a portion of the class. #LATICchat
A3.Teacher must decompose Common Core to student-friendly learning targets that are rigorous, relevant and relational! Learning targets: Knowledge, Reasoning, Skill, Product or Disposition #LATICchat
Q1: Creativity sets us apart from the other fish in the sea. We are preparing young individuals to become productive members of society. Our students deserve creative solutions to drive their desire to learn and thrive in our changing society. #LATICchat
#LaticChat A3 Standards can help S's remained tethered and grounded. Standards, coupled with strong curriculum, can create the conditions for creative work. Creative children will no doubt suffer in prescriptive schools, but standards can act as a guide https://t.co/GoOwQDxgWx
A4: Allow Ss to propose a classroom design that suits their learning needs. The traditional setting may be too sterile for them. Can they propose a more effective design with flexible work stations and choice in seating? Environment can effect creativity. #LATICchat
A4 the layout of the classroom is a great first collaborative challenge. Also, when introducing the idea of being problem solvers and innovators would be how to make the chairs more comfortable.
#LATICchat
A5, Use it or lose it. So many adults have had it beaten into them a mindset, this probably can't happen. If we consistently allow students to be problem finders as well as solvers we will hopefully break that cycle and create innovators.
#LATICchat
A4 I split my math benchmarks into two separate groups based on the Ss needs, which means only about 10 Ss attend the lesson at once. I let them spread out on the carpet and lay however they want instead of forcing “cross cross” seating. Ss are staying engaged longer! #LATICchat
A5b we presented our students with an open ended statement to find a problem and solve it. Not once did a student ask what the minimum requirements were to pass. Every student worked at their top level and pushed past that.

Q2: We incorporate a variety of learning and practice activities to allow students flexibility in how they demonstrate understanding of a concept. One student may create a pictorial representation while another chooses to write about the concept. #LATICchat

A1 Creativity is critical in S's ownership of the topic being studied and the outcomes they are expected to produce. If it is theirs let it truly be theirs. #LATICchat
A6 schedule time to daydream productively. We have journals that we keep ideas, problems, and observations in. That becomes the basis for moving forward with projects.

The role of a child is changing to problem finder, innovator and entrepreneur. They are solving the big problems we face today using their innate wonder #LATICchat
A2 Open ended expectations allow for student creativity in most activities. My Students loved the Bumper Stickers they made for the 1912 POTUS Election. Choice of candidate, slogan, design, color, etc...Excellent opportunity for creativity. #LATICchat
Q3: Has anyone ever tried presenting students with a group of standards for a potential ALU and allowing them to create a problem based task? #LATICchat

A5) By practicing problem solving, Ts can develop the mindset for thinking around an issue or problem. Ts are preparing Ss for jobs that might not exist today. #LATICchat
Washingtonville Ss are doing this for their environmental chemistry. Right now they are using their knowledge of chemical bonding to explain how graduates are dying from opioids that have been altered. They want to save lives and are persevering through the content #LATICchat

A7 I feel like the zone should be the entire class. Collaborative spaces, maker spaces, and flexible seating. It's important that it is being used.
#LATICchat
A7) Funny you should ask, My principal just asked teachers to "Dream Big" and write an in house grant for an Extreme Classroom Makeover. I chose to outfit it with flexible seating. She said to reach for the starts. You would never guess how many people applied...#laticchat
A4 I allow S's to sit and work where they are comfortable and most productive. I include non traditional areas like standing by the window box or sitting on the floor (Carpet samples are great for this). Also use furniture in non traditional fashion to spur creativity. #LATICchat
A5 By using open ended activities and having open ended expectations. The rubric is a guide for them to spring from to deliver creative output. Also allowing for different creative outlets in different formats on each Activity List. #LATICchat
YES! @nsulla just shouted, "I love that idea!" Jessica, let's do it. @snbeauford@carrilyn82 or I can work with you on that! That is creativity in action. #LATICchat
