Join the Collaborative Professional Development movement! Every month, Jennifer Williams and Participate invite you to share how you are incorporating blended learning tools and ideas derived from other educators into your instruction and professional development. This chat is great if you are new to Twitter, or a seasoned social media maven. Ultimately, it’s about empowerment and self-discovery through the expansion of personal learning networks, and the ability to blend in voices, concepts and tools from all over the world.
Thrilled to join for tonight’s chat! Let’s meet for the next 30 minutes to discuss #CollaborativePD! Please tag in 3 PLN members you’d love to meet in 2018!
Hi Everyone! I'm Stephanie, a literacy teacher educator from NY. I would love to finally meet @LitProfSuz@suzrolander and @pranikoff in person, instead of just virtually! But, we are very productive online! #collaborativePD

A1: Constantly working with my PLN to get better. Trying to meet with people from all over the education community and learn everything they have to offer. I'm the sponge! #collaborativepd
Working on some exciting #ICE18 projects & lurking on the #collaborativepd chat! Excited to have @participate as an ICEilproud partner this year! Great things coming! #ICEilchat
A1. I rely heavily on social media to keep me connected with my PLN. I do lots of GHOs w/ educators! I love meeting f2f w/ teachers and edus that inspire me. I also love going to conferences and learning from the educators I'm lucky to work with daily. #collaborativePD
especially when you're home has the coolest office of all time. Thanks so much for joining, Amber. Can't wait to do wonderful things with you! #CollaborativePD
A1: I mostly can think of the things I DON'T like... but I enjoy being able to choose who I work with, the topics we focus upon, and having time to "work independently." #CollaborativePD
A1: The pieces can be chats, edCamps, informal conversations and don't forget onsite PD. What glues them together is a platform that recognizes and celebrates learning wherever it occurs (plug intended) #CollaborativePD
Hi. I'm a teacher educator in Kansas. I teach K-2 literacy methods for undergrads. Any K-2 literacy teachers wanna share their class with my undergrads? #collaborativePD
The freedom to focus on our own growth edges and to identify the platforms for our own professional learning is huge. Sharing learning with others is a vital next step. #collaborativePD
A1: I mostly can think of the things I DON'T like... but I enjoy being able to choose who I work with, the topics we focus upon, and having time to "work independently." #CollaborativePD
A1: Following as many amazing and different educators is essential; learning, thinking, pushing back, and growing only happens when you move outside of your own feedback loop #CollaborativePD
A1: Monthly collaborative PLCs with fellow literacy specialist and Learning Walks with teachers I am coaching are two of my favorite collaborative PDs that I feel have the biggest impact on my professional practice, on my teachers, and students. #CollaborativePD
A1 I read a lot. And try to read from a variety of sources. I used to be more invested in things like voxer and twitter, but lately I've been drawn more to long-form media. Slower, but stays with me longer #collaborativePD
A1: Following as many amazing and different educators is essential; learning, thinking, pushing back, and growing only happens when you move outside of your own feedback loop #CollaborativePD
A1. I look up to my chat groups on #twitter a lot ,keep adding to my knowledge base by doing courses @MicrosoftEDU , just completed the #Gcc UNIVARIETY course & going through the Certificate program for instructional leadership currently..keep myself updated:-) .#CollaborativePD
A1: Love connecting with my peers through social media, any other type of networking event just getting together and sharing ideas. Working on getting a @Flipgrid grid for the APs in my District to share the awesomeness. #collaborativepd
A1 Honored to be a part of SMWP (@southernmainewp) A great collection of edus who are doing right by students. It is great to meet with them on and off throughout the year. #edchatme#CollaborativePD
A1) #edcamps, conference catchups ( sometimes the conversations are more insightful than the sessions, collaboration with like minded educators that have the same goals, drive, and ambitions #CollaborativePD
A1: Robin-LRC TA-IL, Book Recommendations from my PLN, webinars, variety of Twitter chats that help me stay regrouped & recharged! @participate. #CollaborativePD
A2: Information is ubiquitous. The challenge is curating the most meaningful conversations, resources and information to incorporate into your practice. #CollaborativePD
A2. My challenge is finding the time to adequately reflect on and digest all the learning from people, reading, conferences, etc. I travel a lot and make it a point to schedule in time to reflect - it's a running reminder on my calendar. #collaborativePD
A2: Working within time constraints-that is why I love the opportunities @participate offers so learning can literally happen anywhere at any time! #collaborativePD
A2 Am I allowed to say, 'time'? Seems like a cop-out... But when things move so quickly, it's tough to acknowledge that quality just. takes. time. (to process, to think, to explore...) #collaborativePD
Grouping based on convenience is faulty practice for any aged learner. So true, those who are isolated by role or geography need professional support as well. Like minded edus with common goals is such a tremendous support. #CollaborativePD
A2: Sometimes my "pieces" don't have the same specific end goal - so synthesizing all the goodness into one big granola is the hardest part. Sometimes I also need to just "file away" something for a later time! #CollaborativePD
A2: Information is ubiquitous. The challenge is curating the most meaningful conversations, resources and information to incorporate into your practice. #CollaborativePD
A2) Finding time to fit all the awesomeness I find into the average day!! Who has average days anyways!!! Always live on the edge and be willing to explore new ideas!!! ❤️ #CollaborativePD
A2) Having the resources & time. Additionally, when it's something very new, it can be difficult to envision how to make it work. Sometimes just figuring out the logistics of making it work can be challenging. #CollaborativePD
A2b I also have to confront the echo chamber that I unintentionally build. It's faster/easier to just group like things w/o much consideration for contrarian views/voices (read: those not like me) #collaborativePD
Ah, this is a good one. As a literacy teacher educator, I make it a goal to be in at least one classroom per week. I need it to stay connected. #CollaborativePD
A2 it is about keeping conversations connect between the parts. Mention chat that peeps can be part of at edcamps and refer to edcamp docs in chats #CollaborativePD
A2: even after a good PD, teachers are sometimes hesitant to initiate a new practice. Or worse, they try it & it’s not successful, so they give up. We need follow up & follow through in PD 🍎 #CollaborativePD
A2: how about a monthly “tie it all together” meeting? F2F share and prioritize session. Our Dr Nathan Lang does facilitation active sessions. Could work and be fun! Do it over a meal’ @nalang1#CollaborativePD
A2: Curating the learning, & finding out w/c works for me & my Ss. Remembering to pause & reflect to re-align what I actually need to improve. #CollaborativePD
Connecting everything back to student learning: monitoring what’s working/needs to be tweaked, DOES THIS IMPACT STUDENT LEARNING, HOW SO, NOW WHAT? Aligning new pieces to school priorities/vision #CollaborativePD
A2 Having the time to implement, reflect, and share all that I’ve learned seems to be a challenge at times. So much greatness that I just want the world to know it! #CollaborativePD
So.....what have you found works best for you? I'm listening for ideas! #CollaborativePD I use a mix: Padlet, Google Keep, Symbaloo, Diigo and plain old journals of ideas! #CollaborativePD
A2.application of it all in the existing structure of the organisation can sometimes get challenging .Also at times one needs to be very alert and not let opportunity slip to incorporate the changes... #CollaborativePD
A2 Having the time to implement, reflect, and share what that I’ve learned in a meaningful and thematic way seems to be a challenge at times. #CollaborativePD
A2: Disparate hyper focused goals in different PLN’s , I have to pull the lens out and focus on the overarching goals. For me all of my PD has to come back to #equity and #socialjustice#CollaborativePD
The tough part is often deciding… not which awesome thing to do, but which awesome thing will have to be left to someone else… #CuttingRoomFloor#CollaborativePD
A2) Finding time to fit all the awesomeness I find into the average day!! Who has average days anyways!!! Always live on the edge and be willing to explore new ideas!!! ❤️ #CollaborativePD
In creating our new professional support model at school we felt it important to provide experiences to build capacity for trust and engaging in critical conversations around teaching and learning. You can't have one without the other. #collaborativePD
A2: My biggest problem, which I am kind of embarrassed to say, is I’ll learn something cool and forget about it a few days later. I NEED to write things down. 😞 #CollaborativePD
Connecting the pieces requires a view of the bigger picture, requires intentional thinking and planning and supports the school system as a whole, from teachers and students to parents and communities. #CollaborativePD
A3. Hopefully by connecting the pieces you will naturally create the environment for sustainability and follow-up/through. Building capacity is so important, but so is on going support, reflection and iteration. #collaborativePD
A3: When you make your #onebiggranola you find something that serves your students where they are rather than the imaginary student someone has in mind when writing a "one-size-fits-all" PD. #CollaborativePD
Help teachers see the big picture. It’s not about the latest strategy. How do all these “tools” come together to make a master teacher? #CollaborativePD
A1: By far, my favorite form of collaborative PD has been EdCamps. Having the collective mind of educators in a rooms coming up with multiple unique solutions has helped me immensely #CollaborativePD
A3: when we connect the pieces, the benefits will be reaped in the long term. We have to focus on growing each and every teacher and student, each and every day! #CollaborativePD
A: No individual professional development activity should be done in a vacuum. Rather, each learning experience needs to be put into context. Through context, connectivity and the right content, we can amplify individual learning into a collective whole #CollaborativePD
A3. Another piece of connecting the pieces is giving EDUs a platform to share their stories, amplify their voices and celebrate their successes. It's hard to do this with "one and done"s. #collaborativePD
A3) Making sense of it, which would result in a deeper understanding. Having a deeper understanding would then result in more application. #CollaborativePD
A3 Connecting the pieces of PD invites a culture shift focused on purposeful teaching and deep learning. Innovation, reflection, dialogue, collaboration. #kidsdeserveit#collaborativePD
A3) Combining all the awesome tidbits of PD allows you the great chance to create something that is a perfect fit for you and your teaching situation. #CollaborativePD
A3. Another piece of connecting the pieces is giving EDUs a platform to share their stories, amplify their voices and celebrate their successes. It's hard to do this with "one and done"s. #collaborativePD
A3 Connecting the PD pieces allows for seamless and continuous learning to occur throughout your team. Ts begin to collect tools in their “educator toolbox” to use when they need to! #CollaborativePD
A3: Finding the overall theme of the "pieces" & use this to inform us on what to do next. It empowers us on being more sure of what our next steps will be. #CollaborativePD
A2: Connecting any PD from one to another and "putting it all together" is always a challenge. I always work to reflect on how the pieces fit together for my long term plan. #CollaborativePD
Seriously, am I the only one struggling with this? What do you do to keep track of the great tips, resources, strategies that you learn through #CollaborativePD
A2: My biggest problem, which I am kind of embarrassed to say, is I’ll learn something cool and forget about it a few days later. I NEED to write things down. 😞 #CollaborativePD
Absolutely. I love having that sort of think tank. But it’s hard to follow up with the amazing ideas shared. One of the reasons I love @participate#CollaborativePD 🤓💙🤓
Connecting all of the pieces allows teachers to see the big picture on the positive impacts on our Ss. We must follow up and follow through, to see the whole picture! #collaborativepd
A3: piggybacking on what @spirrison said, connecting and synthesizing PD w existing efforts helps us reach a greater sum, not just disparate parts. Disconnected PD is almost always destined to end up a "Flavor of the Week" #CollaborativePD
A: No individual professional development activity should be done in a vacuum. Rather, each learning experience needs to be put into context. Through context, connectivity and the right content, we can amplify individual learning into a collective whole #CollaborativePD
A3: Connecting the pieces is a necessary part of reflection but also can/should lead to "completion" of various larger PD goals. Individual badges that lead to completed course, for instance. #CollaborativePD
A3: Connecting the pieces of PD ensures that what you do will have meaning or purpose instead of just something cool to try with your Ss. #CollaborativePD
I used to keep a giant Evernote notebook of all the things. But it was still disjointed. I started keeping a 'stop doing list' when I'd learn about something that I knew I wasn't going to use. Helpful/freeing to say, "not for me." #CollaborativePD
A3: Connecting pieces of a PD Program requires #perservance & #growthmindset, thinking outside the box, sticking with it...just like we ask our Ss! We use @Playworks, requires some planning...its too hard 4 some TA’s. #CollaborativePD
This is certainly a frustration of mine. How to keep the great ideas from sinking below the surface of the daily deluge? I tend to share my notes from conferences which eventually come back to me when colleagues ask follow up questions. Shared Diigo also helps. #CollaborativePD
I’ve tried notes on many scraps of paper, in notebooks, and on Google Drive. They’re all still there.
The only thing that ultimately works for me is finding the one or two things that jump out as immediate and add them. #CollaborativePD
So like the #CollaborativePD portal is a place where we can have conversations like this, inspire and inform each other, and find trusted recommendations from like-minded folks? Wow, sounds really cool. And free? #LovingIt (Ironic sales meme intended)
Q3 a coherent PD sends a message to #teachers that their time matters; thrown-together segments do not. the same quality of planning #students deserve...teachers do too. #CollaborativePD
You are not alone. We can start a #CollaborativePD support group for those of us who suffer this self-inflicted wound. For followthrough, my semi-successful life hack is to schedule it on my calendar. If I really want to increase accountability, I invite someone else to the event
I use Google Keep, but it is not helping me keep organized. I like the notebook idea. My principal carries a notebook that he writes all his ideas down. What if I lose the notebook? #adhd problems 😞 #CollaborativePD
