    • MrsKaylaDuncan Nov 27 @ 9:06 PM EST
How'd I know this might be a joke from you?! What could make a playlist better if a teacher wanted to go this route?
      In reply to @SFMSBen
  • DeborahHuggard Nov 27 @ 9:08 PM EST
A2: if I understand the question correctly, then are we talking about things like lots of formative assessments and differentiation? #TECHtalkGA
  • Media_Barber Nov 27 @ 9:08 PM EST
A2. Research shows that not all Ts are comfortable w giving Ss more independence to discover. Important to work w Ts to help them find the positives in doing it differently. Patience, not criticism. #TECHTalkGA

    In reply to @JasonKouns1
  • hgsisk Nov 27 @ 9:12 PM EST
A3: Students can still work collaboratively on a project by contributing their best ideas and learning from each other. Some will offer beginner ideas while others might take it a step further. #TECHtalkGA
  • MrsKaylaDuncan Nov 27 @ 9:12 PM EST
    #techtalkga
  • JordannAler Nov 27 @ 9:13 PM EST
A3 One way Ss can collaborate is through student talk- Socratic seminars, think-pair-share #TechTalkGA
  • JustMewborn Nov 27 @ 9:13 PM EST
A3: I have always enjoyed designing group projects with varied levels of learners and letting the students choose what they want to work on based on their strengths. Really liked using learning menus. #TECHTALKGA
  • SFMSBen Nov 27 @ 9:14 PM EST
A3: An example, a time for students to share in small groups what they are working on or their biggest struggle and see if students can build on the strength of other students. It's what we do in the real world! #TECHtalkGA
  • MrsBayerLSMS Nov 27 @ 9:14 PM EST
A3: sharing with one another, explaining their thought processes, asking for feedback, reflection #TECHtalkGA
  • nmedley29 Nov 27 @ 9:14 PM EST
A3: Mixing and matching, finding that balance. Ts need to remember Ss are better at certain subjects than other and need to allow their strengths to shine. #TECHtalkGA
  • JustMewborn Nov 27 @ 9:15 PM EST
Learning how to work with others is an invaluable skill that the students will for sure need. #techtalkga
    In reply to @SFMSBen
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Nov 27 @ 9:15 PM EST
I think that this is a really good aspect of ALL learning, but we also need to teach them HOW to reflect on their learning! #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @JustMewborn
  • MrsDSherfey Nov 27 @ 9:16 PM EST
Ss can work together to create different elements that contribute to a group project- each element contributing to their level and a component needed for the end product- this will hopefully help Ss learn from each other as they discuss/create #techtalkga
  • MrsKaylaDuncan Nov 27 @ 9:16 PM EST
    #techtalkga
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Nov 27 @ 9:16 PM EST
    #TECHtalkGA Q4
  • DeborahHuggard Nov 27 @ 9:16 PM EST
A3: focus on great questions posed by students for students. Then let them work to answer them. We facilitate, but mostly listen. #TECHtalkGA
  • JustMewborn Nov 27 @ 9:16 PM EST
Absolutely. How can they reflect and truly understand? #techtalkga
    In reply to @MmeBurgess
  • edtechteach3 Nov 27 @ 9:16 PM EST
A3 Ss (esp younger ones) will discover each other’s skill sets and strengths. #TECHtalkGA
  • Media_Barber Nov 27 @ 9:17 PM EST
A3. Collaboration works best when dealing w Ss at diff levels. Have to outline responsibilities in a group and even assign so that everyone's needs are met. Or don't do grps - have pairs check each other but do own work. Or collab w others at the same level. OR... #TECHTalkGA
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Nov 27 @ 9:17 PM EST
So true! I think that often when talking about collaboration, we forget as Ts that WE have to do it, too! How will Ss know what it looks like if we only teach in our 4 walls? #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @Media_Barber, @nmedley29
  • MrsBayerLSMS Nov 27 @ 9:18 PM EST
A4: personalized learning means the teacher is continually assessing, checking in with students, forming groups for targeted instruction, & teaching students to set goals, monitor progress, & advocate for themselves #TECHtalkGA
  • MrsKaylaDuncan Nov 27 @ 9:18 PM EST
A4. Creating a culture where Ss know how to support each other, norms are established for how to work appropriately or strategies to solve a problem, allows the teacher to be free to pull small groups or more frequently circulate & conference w/Ss to meet their needs. #techtalkga
  • JustMewborn Nov 27 @ 9:19 PM EST
A4: If executed correctly, it gives the teacher the opportunity to facilitate learning instead of using a direct approach. The teacher has to give way to learning happening in different directions #techtalkga
  • DeniseHazlett Nov 27 @ 9:19 PM EST
#TECHtalkGA A3: Spiral.ac is web based and has Team play, meaning all collaborators are also contributors. Also love Microsoft Planner. So many tech tools manage and encourage team play.
  • Techsciteacher Nov 27 @ 9:19 PM EST
Q4 If students perform well while using personalized learning, the teacher can bask in the success also. #TECHtalkGA
  • MrsDSherfey Nov 27 @ 9:19 PM EST
A4: personalized learning allows for a T to really know his/her Ss @ their level & focus on skills that they need to master. It hits ALL Ss allowing 4 remediation, progress, & enrichment 2 happen simultaneously in one class period. #techtalkga
  • JustMewborn Nov 27 @ 9:19 PM EST
    This summary is awesome. #techtalkga
  • nmedley29 Nov 27 @ 9:19 PM EST
A4: It puts more responsibility on the Ss and keeps the line from forming at the Ts desk. #TECHtalkGA
  • MrsBayerLSMS Nov 27 @ 9:20 PM EST
Yes!!! Having those norms is key! #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @MrsKaylaDuncan
  • Media_Barber Nov 27 @ 9:20 PM EST
A4. Personalized Learning can (honestly) create more work for T to scaffold. But w T no longer the subject matter expert, but the facilitator, T can work with more individuals / groups than before #TECHTalkGA
  • hgsisk Nov 27 @ 9:21 PM EST
A4: I think it keeps us on our toes and constantly learning. I know when I am learning I feel more effective as a teacher b/c I love sharing with my students and other staff. #TECHtalkGA
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Nov 27 @ 9:21 PM EST
Ooh, can you talk more about you made this work? I was just talking about how designing a "solo" project has to be different than designing a group project! #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @JustMewborn
  • Media_Barber Nov 27 @ 9:21 PM EST
Depending on age, you may define roles. Or not. Yes, there should be S accountability and teaching Ss what roles are necessary in grp work is important. Just like they need to decide what works best for them. #TECHTalkGA

    Last Q coming up! #techtalkga
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Nov 27 @ 9:24 PM EST
Love this! But I think that we often struggle w/knowing that our passion isn't everyone else's passion. I mean, I have SUCH A HARD TIME accepting that not everyone loves Harry Potter as much as me! #TECHtalkGA

    In reply to @MrsKaylaDuncan
  • JustMewborn Nov 27 @ 9:26 PM EST
Absolutely. A year or so ago we taught a group project in Enrichment where students created their own country and had to choose their type of govt, economy, exports, and import. It expanded into student groups forming continents because of similarities. #techtalkga
    In reply to @MmeBurgess

Q5 - Explanation - the article discusses possible misuse of Ss data, edtech driving the way education might go, etc. What role should these companies play in public education?
  • BrysonBridget Nov 27 @ 9:27 PM EST
A5: been lurking - just read great article in EdWk. Some people immediately anti when Silicon Valley is invoked - concerns w/data, privacy, etc. has to be considered #TECHtalkGA

  • JustMewborn Nov 27 @ 9:27 PM EST
Used menus to guide the group work and the project. Students created infomercials about their countries on iMovie. #techtalkga
    In reply to @MmeBurgess
  • DeborahHuggard Nov 27 @ 9:28 PM EST
A5: concerns are privacy/security, tech providers not educators may mean well but have different motivation, it’s their business to make money but it’s ours to educate...these lines risk getting blurry #TECHtalkGA
  • Techsciteacher Nov 27 @ 9:28 PM EST
Q5 Pros: Silicon Valley is creating/developing the tools needed for the next work force. Cons: Soft skills are needed as well. #TECHtalkGA
  • JustMewborn Nov 27 @ 9:29 PM EST
A5: The pros are that the technology continues to advance at a rapid fast rate and their involvement encourages access. The cons are that so many schools need more access. #techtalkga
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Nov 27 @ 9:29 PM EST
YES! "Continually checking in with Ss"... they're not just in a corner on computer, the T is engaging personally w/each S! #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @MrsBayerLSMS
  • hgsisk Nov 27 @ 9:29 PM EST
A5: Not sure I can answer this but Pros, maybe 1st to pilot or try out some tech Cons, the rest of the student pop across the globe are always playing catch up to be competitive. #TECHtalkGA
  • edtechteach3 Nov 27 @ 9:29 PM EST
A5 There’s big $$ in education. The byproduct of this mining has started to become an advantage to our students. Most good #edtech Co.s know now that educators won’t purchase products that aren’t sound educational #TECHtalkGA
  • nmedley29 Nov 27 @ 9:29 PM EST
A5: Pros - they have the $$ to throw out through Grants and such. Cons - Education their way...not much room for differentiation. #TECHtalkGA
  • Media_Barber Nov 27 @ 9:30 PM EST
A5. Con: Company's motivation is profit - ask their board, if you think otherwise. Pro: Ability to provide more for Ss who would not get it otherwise. #TECHTalkGA
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Nov 27 @ 9:31 PM EST

  • MrsKaylaDuncan Nov 27 @ 9:31 PM EST
A5. Pros $$ given to schools wanting to innovate. Cons Ss data starts getting used (side effect of companies wanting to see how their product is used) & a lot of 1st attempts at personalizing are prescriptive programs on the comp. #techtalkga
  • MrsDSherfey Nov 27 @ 9:32 PM EST
Pros: investing in Ss ed, Creating classes/opportunities for Ss that contribute to real life job possoblities, & S excitement over the latest/greatest app Cons: security, privacy levels & need for curriculum 4 Ss 2 be responsible digital citizens #techtalkga
  • DeniseHazlett Nov 27 @ 9:32 PM EST

  • Media_Barber Nov 27 @ 9:34 PM EST
We would be remiss to assume that companies are doing something with equal value OF the students that we, as teachers, have. We have to be cynical to protect those who trust us. (Yes, business is not evil, just not protective of the same things.) #TECHTalkGA

That's where we can build the bridge, be the translator between the company expectations & the classroom reality! Ts should be the heart and backbone of any edtech company! #TECHtalkGA
    • mycalfdoll Nov 27 @ 9:37 PM EST
Agreed we need to be cynical. I’ve found success partnering with smaller tech companies where a relationship can be formed. They provide guidance and passion for skill set, we can help bridge with pedagogy
