This PLN is so amazing that the sacrifice is worth it!
-
-
So great to have you all here tonight! Q1 coming up in 2 minutes!
-
-

Me too. Excited to learn and go further with what is best for kids.

A1: Grades can hinder when they don't encourage continued learning and reflection.
-
A1: Many times they confine what Ss are able to do in the classroom, too focused on grades not on learning
-
A1 Ss do the minimum for the score, focus isn't on learning
-
A1: help with accountability, hinder by making it hard for Ss to take risks and try new things. Fear-based.
-
A1: Ss & Ps too focused on letter/number, learning comes 2nd, for some it can push them to work harder tho, others causes stress
-
A1. Great Q. Grades vs. Feedback vs. Assessment vs. Testing. Which is best for informing your teaching, and for students?
-
Sorry I'm late. A1: Grades help to measure proficiency at times. Hinder because it seem to say its all that matters.
-
-
Off to a great start! Q2 coming in 2!
-
Definitely. Like fearbased
-
While it can measure prof, many times too subjective to truely measure what Ss can do
-
-
A2: I teach PDL as employability skills and are integral component in my Ss learning.
-
A2: Modeling, infusing the lang. into my classroom, "creating experiences worth getting excited about"
-
A1 Ss need more freedom & choice to make advances in thier knowledge and skill not based on grades
-
A1: Matera seems to discourage rubrics as inhibiting creativity. Too much handholding. Thoughts?
-
A1 grades get in the way of learning what is the difference between a grade of B to B- or 78% to 79%
-
A1 grades get in the way of learning what is the difference between a grade of B to B- or 78% to 79%
-
A2 I'm definitely planning to hang a poster and follow the suggestion to change my language. I've done this before but grade focus.
-
A2-skills needed for any kitchen to function, or success in any workplace, it's the language I use when Ss work in teams
-
A2 Focus on journey, what risk did you take, what did you have 2 overcome, what can you do differently https://t.co/Jjg9ccPIax
-
A2: Using PBL and units like Genius Hour encourage Purpose Driven learning, encourage Ss to take more ownership of class/learning
-
Agree. Kind of wish there was no report cards in elem anyway
-
A2 PDL should be part of the foundation of all learning to promote life long learners
-
A2. Real life situations and immersed in the experience. When students are lost in the process, learning can take off.
-
Experiences that relate to their life outside of school such an important concept, mushc more import that memoring facts
-
So many great thoughts! Q3 coming in 2 minutes!
-
Yes, I'm telling them exactly what to do and not allowing for their voice...man I'm glad I stayed up
-
As elem T, we get to write in comments, makes it more like feedback than canned "completes all work" type
-
Depends on the rubric. I think they can be written in a way to include essentials but not dictate answers.
-
-
That's the power of feedback vs. grades. Real interaction and chance for change and reflection.
-
-
Also allows for them to add their voice and passion into their learning
-
Kind of agree, many Ss will do only what grade them want on the rubric, not push themselves
-
I agree. I think I need some work/practice on making rubrics that are not too leading.
-
They are only good for establishing the minimum
-
Gotten more focused, but yes, takes longer, worth it in end tho
-
We had the disc, today! Write rubrics that "have the lid open." Can fill you in on the disc if you like
-
Agree. Like upper elem for sure
-
A3: Its imp for Ts & Ss to reflect on their learning to dev. growth mindset. Ss to reflect on PDL @ throughout semester.
-
A3 What struck me here was the FAIL encouragement. Failure becomes meaningful with feedback for success in second attempt!
-
It's all about Ss learning. "We can't do the same thing the same way expecting different results"
-
A3: reflection should be used to inform Ss from self, peer and teacher perspective to better the end product for max learning!
-
A3-allows for processing, motivation, and how to constructively move forward
-
A3: Metacognition, Ss are more enthusiastic when they can see their improvement/learning, and it sticks better!
-
I don't want to encourage them to only do the minimum, however. Maybe one that focus on standards, but not details?
-
Q3. Refl, guided by careful feedback leads to going back and creating a better finished product.
-
Love this! We so often look at failure as a bad thing when it is really an opportunity to try again
-
A3: Have been missing reflection piece, Ss won't always internalize what they learn if no reflection, memorize for test & move on
-
Going to try, working on ideas now
-
Interesting concept. Love to hear more
-
A3 Reflection helps us make better decisions, improves routes taken, and allows Ss to build confidence https://t.co/FoZ2XPVGer
-
Such a dynamic group of educators! Loving the convo! Q4 coming in 2 minutes!
-
I like the FAIL idea as well. Could give everyone a FAIL grade at first then reflect/peer edit before grading
-
I'm embracing failure as theme of my class this year, hoping Ps & Ss jump on board, know my admin will
-
-
A3 Tt need to reflect daily on their lesson and Ss growth
-
Me too. It seems like I have to hurry to the next thing. This year will be different!
-
Let's chat another time when things are running so fast. Love to share what we talked about.
-
Love the peer aspect, often missing in classroom
-
-
-
You bet! Let's talk when we aren't cranking through this evening!
-
I left the "must move on to next thing" last year, less stressful for Ss & me, AND still covered all needed to
-
-
voxer is a great way to continue dialogue at one time and pace. If interested in creating group..DM me your user name once in.
-
A4: Provide choice, spend time learning abt their interests outside of Sch., go to their sports, dance, etc.
-
Q4. Community, sense of trust. Knowing your kids, play on their interests and abilities.
-
A4 Ss and parents take surveys, talk with Ss about likes/dislikes, create vids to tell about themselves https://t.co/ox8VIPTfg4
-
meant "own" time and pace
-
A4: Create team learning opps & observe Ss personalities emerge. Be intentional about learning names & building relationships.
-
A4 ELA has lots of personal response ops. But I've found the content gets dry/boring. My own enthusiasm isnt enough.
-
A4-I take time to connect with each Ss weekly
-
That's awesome. It's been hard for me to balance mandates and what is best for Ss.
-
A4 Ss - Tt relationships are more important than rigor , relevance , tech. Ss will learn if they believe Ts care about them.
-
A4: Have done unit on learning types, helps them get to know self better & gives me an idea of what they need
-
A4: Give Ss opportunities to work in different groups, Ss make weekly practice videos where their personalities really come out!
-
Do you have the chance, trust, to wrap ELA into a thematic integrated approach ?
-
Love the vids, done collages & want to step it up for Ss looping with me
-
-
So much going on last year, skipped team bldg activities in beginning, was noticeable, very important
-
Yep, I get to meet family, pets, and hear their unedited thoughts on class. SO meaningful!
-
-
Going to try this year for blogs and portfolios
-
Good reminder to intentionally prioritize team building at the BOY
-
A4 Plan 2 offer more choice n assignments, starting up morning meeting again this yr, and offering more choices n
-
A5 Amazing Food Truck Race where Ss create food truck name/concept & race across the US to learn regional cuisine.
-
A5 This year I want to use the pirate theme. I'm Captain Qdog! Cheesy I know, but gotta start somewhere! Pirate Settlers of Catan!
-
A5- theme creates excitement which feeds motivation
-
A5: Trying to create Zootopia gamification, Ss will get to be police officers in end, allows them to take control of what they do
-
A5: Sarah K -5 Science joining late. Making students hero's was a missing piece. Maybe add bigger challenges.
-
A5: Really struggling with this one. Tossing around the idea of HP-style houses with composers, not sure how to tie it all in
-
-
You are going to LOVE Provides for great authentic feedback opportunities, connections, etc. https://t.co/aWzGfDNEc3
-
-
Going to try this year for blogs and portfolios
-
Fantastic idea! I can see Ss totally getting into it
-
A5 Take time to turn classroom into the theme environment with Ss help to remind and fuel their engagement
-
I'm struggling here as well. Would like theme to be connected to content somehow, but that changes often.
-
A5. We talked about using distributive leadership down to the Ss, and that sense of value leads to them being heroes.
-
A5 Theme treasure island, it's starting location for great adventures by Ss created characters https://t.co/nRvQrfnWso
-
Struggled there as well, which is why I went movie themed, bringing content to what they like
-
A5: Kids LOVE the solar system..and my last name happens to be Marrs...going to try something with that theme
-
Time is flying! Q6 coming in just a minute!
-
Thought about making each class a different research group/university (Stanford, Bell Labs, etc). still not sure...
-
3rd grade, right? Such a great theme for them, part of standards as well?
-
-
Yep! It sure is! It's the best unit out of the whole year so I thought I'd stretch the theme out a bit https://t.co/IizhAvoNBQ
-
-
3rd grade, right? Such a great theme for them, part of standards as well?
-
A6 Ss cook in teams. Ask ques, encourage problem solving. Discuss finished product with them helps them internalize learning.
-
Interesting idea. Would that give enough time to structure the rest of the game to the theme?
-
A6: Ss practice songs to earn "Orchestra Karate" belts, unlimited tries within time constraints.
-
A6: I use to give Ss feedback both verbal and written, also allow for Ss to give each other feedback after teaching it
-
A6 If they give each other feedback it is more efficient. I can give it during discns/responses. Tricky one here!
-
A6: Since Ss do 1 & done, constructiv fdbck key, still working on how to get there, hoping failure embraced theme will help there
-
A6. Feedback in the way of Qs. Ask for explanations, can you elaborate. Let the Ss move forward without to much from the T.
-
A5 I took out my jungle theme this yr & am going wt a farmhouse chic/ homey theme with a lot of flexible seating and soft lighting
-
A6 intentional probing questions to inspire rethinking and reexamining to create the best product possible
-
A6- ask Ss based on what they know, what might be the cause of the error-they can redo to test hypothesis
-
Like giving students choice. Wondering how it would go with 4 different sections
-
Use feedback in activites, but find most Ss ignore
-
For sure! I have a great team and we are going to have an amazing year
-
I'd like to do more student feedback/editing. Hard to do without a detailed rubric (Q1 discussion)?
-
Frustrating when I take the time to give Ss fdbck & they ignore it. How can we increase engagement w/fdbck?
-
Great team is such a wonderful thing to have
-
Wow! So many amazing and inspiring ideas! Q7 coming in 2 minutes!
-
Like the idea of choice as well. Hard to know what game elements will work with different choices.
-
That's the true ?, not sure what the answer is YET
-
I don't allow Ss to turn in work until they address the feedback...works most of the time https://t.co/fpix8ImoOB
-
-
Frustrating when I take the time to give Ss fdbck & they ignore it. How can we increase engagement w/fdbck?
-
Side Quests are great for giving Ss choice! You'll read more about in later chapters.
-
-
Good idea. Have to think more about how to encourage participation by all in that case.
-
A6 I would like to implement student led conferences this year, but will see. I have a long list of new things I want to change
-
We'll keep exploring the YET together!
-
There's a fine line between expectations and rubrics...Exp. and PDL https://t.co/GK8zLFi5LG
-
-
I'd like to do more student feedback/editing. Hard to do without a detailed rubric (Q1 discussion)?
-
A7 My class is all about teams....they work in teams daily to create. So much learning happens in a collaborative environment.
-
I love my student led conferences at fifth grade. If I can help, let me know.
-
Q7: Different projects, some teams I choose, some they choose. Orchestra is always one big team.
-
Fun idea! I like that a lot. Could possibly work well with the theme of different labs/universities.
-
-
A7 Collaboration is great on partner projects or group work. Ss seem surprised when its indp work. They depend on each other!
-
A7: Most of my PBL units are collab, have to remember to pull in independent reflection this year
-
A7- Ss work in teams daily for recipe preparation, creates checks and balances, as well as risk taking
-
A7. At beginning of the year. Teams, each a role. Can't move on until consensus within team, then the class. Powerful!
-
Agreed! Works with a lot of different themes!
-
A7: My Ss sit in teams and work in teams often. This year I'll be calling them astronaut "crews" :)
-
A6 Ask ?s and prompt Ss to try other ways 2 find solutions, hope 2 give them confidence to continue working https://t.co/Gusnv6Cmk9
-
That could be both good/bad, some Ss get too dependent on working with peers
-
Send me a DM if you want an invite to a voxer group to continue ongoing convo about gamification.
-
A7: Do a lot of labs, so lots of opportunity for groups. Thinking about trying to make lab groups with the different gamer types
-
The Bartle test is a great one for Ss to take. There is an app for it also.
-
Was thinking same thing, still working out how to do with my theme
-
A7 In my classes Ss help each other for all their assignments, what better way to learn than to teach
-
Cool! I kept the link you shared to use at BOY
-
Excellent. Was going to try to find that. Could be a great way to get to know Ss as well.
-
For all the locals...I am teaching a 3-day gamification workshop at So OR Super Quest Aug 16, 17, & 18th at Table Rock RCC campus!
-
Voxer is like a group text, walkie talkie style. Great for ongoing dialogue at own pace. Can use audio or texting.
-
I'm wondering about how to structure guilds for my classes. How to define, how to place students.
-
