Welcome everyone! Happy to host the #MakeItReal chat tonight! Please introduce yourself, your role and location and share something thing brought you joy this week!
Rich Hayzler, MS Principal from NJ looking forward to #MakeItReal tonight. A moment of kindness was my daughter making us a Valentines Day card for tomorrow. "Dad, don't look!"
My son was sick today at school but tonight said "dad, did you get the heart chocolates for tomorrow?" I DID!!! And his sweetness brings me joy! #MakeItReal
A1: Great Question! We seem to plant a lot of kindness seeds, with ideas, notes, stickers, etc...but to cultivate it is now to TEND to those seeds. Reach back out, make sure it's growing and spreading. Give it the fertilizer it needs to grow without you! #MakeItReal
A1: Cultivating kindness requires you to step outside your comfort zone as you do kind acts for others to make this world a better place! #MakeItReal#passionforkindness
Yes, Denis! I agree! The cultivating is the work of kindness. Sometimes we have to dig deep to make sure those roots are supported for growth! #MakeItReal
A1. What does it mean to cultivate kindness. Hmm. Sometimes kindness comes natural in situations and at other times it's more challenging. We must encourage ourselves and others to be KIND during difficult situations. Model this and offer empathy. #makeitreal
A1: Cultivating kindness means creating conditions where kids are inspired to be kind to each other intrinsically. It's creating an environment where being kind is both the expectation and the norm. #MakeITReal
Great point! And like those fields of wildflowers whose beauty we marvel at, we must protect the places where kindness comes naturally so that it can continue! #MakeItReal
A1: Cultivate kindness is to make kindness and empathy part of our culture - it’s about doing more than just random acts, and making it a way of life for everyone in our building - Ss, Ts, parents, admin, etc. #MakeItReal
Oh, I love that - make kindness the norm. YES! The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation supports that message as does Character Strong! Great ways to create kind cultures! #MakeItReal
A1: Cultivating kindness means to not just spread kindness but nurture it, support it, help kindness be sustainable. Kindness needs to grow so that there is plenty to go around. #MakeItReal
A1 Kindness will only become the norm, if you find ways to recognize and honor it - put your gentle, quiet, kind empaths on BLAST so that kindness becomes visable #MakeItReal
A2: I like using technology with kindness as students write kindness stories, create digital projects, and communicate with others about their kind words and actions. @Flipgrid, @Seesaw, and Google Apps are great for this! #MakeItReal#passionforkindness
A2: I feel like it's in the way you treat your students, the way you respond to their questions and react to their answers. If you model kindness, and teach kindness, then for the most part, it will be the norm in your classroom! #MakeItReal
A1: Cultivate kindness to me means after we plant it, we water it, add nutrients, and give it everything it needs to help it flourish. The more we yank out the weeds of meanness, the more kindness we'll see grow and take root. #MakeItReal#passionforkindness
A2: Using kindness (and other values) to drive the why behind classroom rules and expectations. For example: we don't talk while other people are talking because it's kind to listen and value everyone's contribution. Fosters kindness and gives kids the why. #MakeITReal
A2: Show Kindness to plant the seeds.
Reward kindness to shine the sunlight.
Reject unkindness to pull the weeds.
Expect Kindness to fertilize the soil.
#MakeItReal
A2: Modeling kindness with our Ss is a huge step in the right direction! Banter and joking is a norm in our classroom, but meanness is not allowed - ever. I do not tolerate being unkind to anyone for any reason. Ss need to see that it is unacceptable. #MakeItReal
A2 I think it has to go beyond just recognizing kindness, but really talking about empathy - discussing how characters or people throughout time fell - we need to increase emotional awareness and build empathy #MakeItReal
Oh, how I love the WHY of kindness, Jennifer! YES! Getting our students to see the meaning behind kindness makes it all the more impactful! #MakeItReal
We must model what we expect. Students are always watching. They see how we speak to them and others in the building. This makes such an impact on their own behavior! #MakeItReal
A2: Integrate kindness by building and sustaining positive relationships with students. For some you may be the person they look to in their life for support and compassion. Showing you care through good times and bad can mean more than any content you teach #MakeItReal
I agree, Jen! Diving deep into conversations about empathy and compassion help students relate to others, making kindness more meaningful! Great insights! #MakeItReal
A3 my 12 year old son bought me some Swedish fish today - my fav candy, my admin made me heart-shaped cookies, and my family supports me every day! #MakeItReal
A3: Definitely, my husband! Bless his heart for listening to the trials and tribulations of teaching Preschool for the past 35 years! The patience and understanding of a saint!! #MakeItReal
Wow! You are incredible, Kris! 35 years is a lifetime if kindness and dedication in education! Our spouses often are the ones who provide a listening ear after a tough day for sure! #MakeItReal
Thanks for joining in our chat about cultivating kindness! Remember to keep sharing out your kind words and actions throughout the week! #MakeItReal#passionforkindness
I have had a lot of wonderful things happen 2018/19 school year but having you come surprise me and the Wildcat Staff was unbelievable! #kindness#MakeItReal#BlessedAndGrateful
