#bcedchat A1: No formal studies currently. Finished a 2nd M.Ed in 2016 and am out of money. Twitter, blogs, & some reading for continuing professional development
#bcedchat Currently no studies--new school, new staff, new community--learning all students names and how to best support staff and students...always looking to read professional books too
#bcedchat Love the #SFU cohort learning models. Exploring ideas together, across age groups & even curricular specialties is so enriching. Often gave new lenses to see my students and learning through.
Loving the badges, Ian. I'm thinking, if the degree doesn't connect to 'movement in position', then learning is the way to go (not 'jumping through loops'). #bcedchat
A1: Currently working on my EdD @sfueducation and still mentoring wonderful Teachers in a Graduate Program in Education @BAFF_SFU for Core French Ts #bcedchat
A2: passionate about #Frimm pedagogy, love learning, reflection of prof growth plan. So many interests though, not sure where graduate studies will lead. #bcedchat
#bcedchat A#2 Have to admit it was the $ that first enticed me but wound up in a great program focusing on Indigenous Literature and it changed my career path
Here's a link: https://t.co/clGHhnmlO6#bcedchat Ab out learning on your own (can pay for credits, or just do it for the learning....which is what I do).
I had a wonderful experience taking a GDE through @sfueducation with a #frimm focus for teaching in an immersion setting! Loved it. Changed the way I taught and lived in the language with my students! #bcedchat
A2: I've always loved school and learning so enjoy taking courses. They help me feel informed with the changing curriculum. I'm also open to exploring other roles in the future. #bcedchat
#bcedchat A2: The exponential growth of knowledge means that we can continue to access new understandings in education, brain-based learning etc. The stance of action researcher or A/R/Tographer (artist, researcher, teacher) is a powerful one to help students.
Absolutely! @mmeisacote runs a wonderful franco bootcamp through @sfueducation and @ubc also offers a super summer institute. I have been, it was a blast!!! #bcedchat

yes! Coursera is awesome in some ways. I have tried it out (like #Immooc through @gcouros) and a few others. The opportunities to learn (if you are not looking for 'accreditation') are amazing. #bcedchat
A3: All the reading and research I’m doing right now is giving me so many ideas for improving things in my classroom. I’m itching to try them out, but I’m glad I have time to really think my ideas through and not rush into them #bcedchat
A3 #bcedchat put me in the role of student again. Felt the pressure of papers and reading but also loved it. Introduced me to a mentor. Gave me confidence to bring more indigenous lit into the classroom
A3 I think this is a profound opportunity to support LEARNING in better & stronger ways. We are always learning, building & responding in new ways. We need to help our Ss be the innovators of their future. #bcedchat
#bcedchat A3: Focused learning helps to enhance our own noticing & allows us to attend to different things, often outside of the moment when we are making so many other decisions. Going over data a few times brings new insights, new questions = re-search
A3: I always appreciate the vulnerability of being a student. It can be stressful but is always a great reminder for my own practice in the classroom #bcedchat

A3. With every degree I have attained, my mind becomes more of an open vessel, I realize there can be more than one correct solution to every problem. As I learn, I become more discerning and intentional with my practice. #bcedchat
Carmel Diezman helps distinguish between a teacher-researcher and scholarly teacher. Engaging 'with' research is one thing, 'doing' it is something else. A key to both is reflecting on understandings gained and the effect it has on work and thinking going forward.
A3: problematize areas of Education that I may have never thought twice about before. Understanding my philosophy of Education to know the 'why' of teaching better so that I can help my students more. #bcedchat
A3.2 At this point in my life/career, the "sheepskin" means little to me...the learning is paramount. There are many avenues for professional to learn outside of the university. #bcedchat
A3. Introduction of Barrie Bennett's concept attainment and concept mapping still influence how I view good pedagogy. Graduate courses also emphasized importance of developing deep and vast professional networks. #bcedchat
A3: I'm ready to be immersed as a student again. Love learning for the joy it brings, but also int in academic study that supports growth and is based on current research. Also good to show our Ss that we are learners too! Besides, I'm a total nerd... #bcedchat
#bcedchat A4: even with 280, this is too big an answer to fit in tweets.
I can learn from anyone, I can learn with anyone, I can be blessed by distant thinkers & the students in front of me. . . Look, look, look!

A2: As a new teacher I am interested in working with colleagues to develop myself as an educator. This opportunity to learn and grow as a professional really excites me #bcedchat

A4 I am not the same educator I was when I started my masters. Now only 5 Saturday’s from finishing I find myself reflecting on what I will miss and I can say it is the F2F talks on important issues and hearing many POV’S #yay240#bcedchat

A4: As the only person at my school teaching my grade and subject, it is helpful to share perspectives with other teachers. It helps me feel connected. #bcedchat
Q4: Something I noticed during my most recent field study was that students began coaching each other throughout the project, and lower academic students seemed to gain confidence as they began to problem solve themselves #bcedchat
A4. The value in networking, collaborating, leaning in, being vulnerable, and learning and growing together ~ feeling like we had some momentum on something big for kids and our 'system' #bcedchat
Not five in a row though 😬 but still only 5. The journey has been awesome and humbling. I want it to be done but I still want to have the rich conversations. #bcedchat
it was the first time in Canada! low-cost to attend, very thought provoking. @osstf Ontario Secondary school teachers are hosting a conference in April. Maybe something for BC to consider? #bcedchat
Q4: After recently reading Bransford et al (2000) I am realizing there are (more) things I can do in the classroom to ensure learning is more meaningful #bcedchat
Q5: Sometimes my biggest struggle is taking a step back and allowing the students explore and construct new knowledge (and build off previous knowledge). This is worth exploring more. #bcedchat
A5 my view of assessment, teaching from strengths, the importance of reflecting, books on your coffee table are ok books in bathroom STILL NOT OK to listen in order to understand not just to reply #bcedchat
A4 I'm in the back seat remember! :) Sharing of our own educational experiences, hearing victories and struggles of others ... residential school experiences was so powerful, too. Life of an elementary teacher - they're masters! #bcedchat
A5: I realized there were some hard truths around my early years of practice that I needed to reconcile with in order to push through to develop my instructional strategies and re-work how I saw school and schooling. Game. Changer. #bcedchat
A5. Through studies, experiences and life...I have learned to put the needs of the students ahead of the curricular requirements of the subject of the course. #bcedchat
A5 I think ... confidence to stick to the heart of learning ... learner centered ... helping our Ss be GREAT people who are confident learners and contribute to the good of our world #bcedchat
A5: I used to be very concerned with following and covering the curriculum. I now believe in Teaching Through Connection. My focus is building strong connections with my students. Once that happens, learning can follow. #bcedchat
A6. I have been blessed with several research opportunities. I have been blessed and honored with the opportunity to present at many conferences and professional developments. #bcedchat
A6 hmmmmm... I think i'd have to say that i've been more keenly intent on professional reading - books, Social Media; plus definitely more explicit in reaching out, connecting, asking questions, wondering, acknowledging that our own learning is a journey in itself #bcedchat
Sample asmt for integrated sub areas with curric and core connections - musical thtr for BC gold rush gr 3/4; single point with continuum @RosePillay1@vis_jp
A6 ( or is it 7) I had the confidence to do a TedX it was at the beginning of my journey I shared the stage w/ @bmooreintheloop@technolandy@librarymall I was in constant of AWE of their amazingness...& still look to them as mentors #bcedchat
A6:#bcedchat#maker as a whole thing! Didnt know it was a thing with a name and following before! Also multiple aspects if research and encouraging pedagogical change through the support of faculty! And now I TEACH there! #💗happyheart
Q6 My FA encouraged us to begin to make digital footprint. So I️ started Twitter 4 years ago...and voila...this amazing ProD and PLN have blossomed. #thankful#bcedchat
A6: I was grateful to work with @sfueducation Graduate Studies when I had completed my GDE and MEd EP, I taught the classes I had taken as a student and it gave me huge perspective and continues to inform my practice today! #bcedchat
A5 - We also need to let students think and not give them the answers too quickly.
A post about biting my 'digital tongue' when blogging with students a while back: https://t.co/KAfUrk7hq0#bcedchat
A6 (right back at ya @tracyacramer ) tedx talk was an amazing experience - and being asked to contribute to the 4th edition of @kenoc7 How To Grade For Learning was another highlight of the previous year! Interested to see what’s next and where it takes me! #bcedchat

A $$$ $omething my daughter is prepping for by looking for scholarship$. She’s a better learner than I ever was so she should be able to get some quality offers! #bcedchat
Q6: I’ve really tried to shift my style in math class to allow for more group discussion, group work, problem solving, responsibility and a connectedness within the classroom #bcedchat
#bcedchat A6: Since retiring & doing an M.Ed. in numeracy, I've been researching & volunteering in elementary schools in Richmond & Burnaby which have expanded my understanding of concept analysis (studying ideas through the grades) tremendously.
A7.
Cost,
Format (Distance/on site)
We can get the education/learning from other medium...Is there a worthwhile Return on Investment for the terminal "degree"?
#Bcedchat
I came home and started a book club. The first book we read was 'The World is Flat https://t.co/zfYhXXrbVF by @tomfriedman
Changed my thinking about students being connected and being literate today.

A7. Location and access to Masters was an initial challenge but successful in creating an enthusiastic cohort to bring UBC to the north thru UNBC. We just asked! :) #bcedchat
A7: I'm fortunate to teach in a district with strong financial support for professional development, including graduate studies. Time is my biggest barrier. I prefer on campus learning but it is challenging to do while working full-time. #bcedchat
The first masters = always a good return on investment. You will make up the tuition with salary before the student loans mature.
There is never a good time...just do it. #bcedchat
@Teachinginthe21 did an INCRDIBLE TedX Last year as well. Freaking amazing!!!! Worth the listen and so did @ChristineYH#bcedchat has some serious talent in it.

Q7 Time.
Wish there was more time to explore, read, research, invest, lead more.
Family, work kinda can make those goals complicated.
Anyone have magic for that?
Keep watching for Hermione’s time-turner. ;)
#bcedchat
A7 barrier: time. How did I overcome that? Perhaps I didn’t! I just found ways to fit more in. But I do less marking now (and more planning). #bcedchat
#bcedchat A8: for those in Lower Mainland & some other areas, the Field Studies programs at @SFU brought school to our district for several of the years. Times were convenient to do while still teaching full time. Cohort model provided support. Tuition Fee certificates all good!
A7: Demands of our profession are barriers at times. Work/Life Balance is already tough, but making space for learning has to happen. I wish this was embedded in our job descriptions. Wouldn't it be awesome if structures allowed for self-directed academic learning? #bcedchat
A7 #bcedchat Time required for study. SFU's #MATE Masters of Arts for Teachers of English - great program for FT teachers. Supportive profs and challenging but realistic & possible schedule
#bcedchat I have to say that doing my Masters was one of the best things I've ever done. Invigorating. Challenging. So much growth in my practice. Opened many doors for me. Shout out to @sfueducation@LeytonSchnell@chermhill & Michael Ling! Loved every minute of it!
In previous district, we supported Masters while still teaching. (my own experience too). Our projects were much more meaningful 2 ourselves, the cohort ...& benefited our own Ss, schools & district #bcedchat
Maybe just ask? Given the teacher shortages, new game perhaps?
Q7: For me finances and time are the biggest 'barriers'. I have 3 kids, hubby works shift work, I teach full time, and L.S.T. on top of the teaching load. It is an amazing life, but it doesn't leave much time for money for more 'momma school.' #bcedchat
